- I assemble the ultimate bait finesse reel using the 2016 Shimano Aldebaran BFS and swapping the stock spool for the lightest spool in the world.

Exciting times for all of us. Congrats on bringing to light the BFS ! So, I have an additional purpose for BFS. I am a Minnesota walleye fisherman. I use a number of BFS reels for vertical jigging out of my Ranger boat. My Aldebaran BFS weighs less than ANY spinning reel, use my thumb to control a bite, never line twist issues just a few reasons.

You find a replacement bearing on the spool shaft?
Hobie-Wan Kenobi no not yet, I almost ordered another set of Air BFS bearings until I saw the inner diameter of the Avail bearing is bigger than the stock. But since the bearings are so small how much bigger can the balls be than the Air Bfs? Glad I saved my $40

Just wondering.. as the reduction in weight in the ultimate spool is largely down to the aluminium shaft.. is the shaft part of the ‘rotational mass’ ? If not, will it matter that much?
I like the videos man! BFS is some fun shit! I went out today with my sub $100 Aliexpress BFS setup (cost of add on reel parts factored in that price) and cast a 1.1 gram jig 30 - 35' but usually fish baits from 3 - 7 grams and can bomb that stuff, so you can easily fish BFS and throw most micro baits/lures for under a hundred dollars.

Hope you don't mine a question. I posted in your other video. Here, you replaced the side plate bearing. I don't have that and my spool seem to be tight. Do you know that the additional bearing is different from the original Shimano bearing? Alternately, if you put the original spool in, does it fit or do you need to change the bearing back? I saw a spool in China market that they said it fit for SS couple days ago. If I recall correctly, they said the spool weight only 5.3 grams. See if I can find u the link if u r interested

Nice find... but that spool is 34mm. The SS AIR is made for 32mm. would be great for a regular Steez if you can get them to import it

I would trust Avail to know what they are doing. Aluminum doesnt react to magnets like iron or steel but it still gets affected by magnetic fields

So I think I've watched all your BFS videos, and the best BFS reel stock out of the box is??? Abu or Shimano? Am I wasting my time converting my Steez?
Hmm.. well out of the box the Revo LTX BF8 has the lightest spool of any bfs reel. But the brakes are somewhat holding it back. I did the cast battle between the Aldebaran, SS AIR, and LTX, I just need to edit the footage and release it. Maybe sometime next week because I want to mix it up. As for the Steez, just depends on how light you are trying to throw. As you see im casting micro lures so the lightest spool should pay off for me.

Until my casting skills improve/adapt to BFS baitcaster techniques. So next is getting a spool & rod, then my 1st setup will be ready...

Plat.co.jp and no the sideplate wont fit because of the different brake system. But they do sell the sideplate for the 15 ALD 51

In my opinion, to cast any ultra light jig with any distance, you need a longer rod than 5 foot 10 inches plus it’s stretching the castability of a bait casting reel. A spinning reel is by far the better choice.
but the bait finesse setup is the far funner choice

To be honest I never tried it on the Kuying rod. I have on quite a few JDM rods rated down to 1/32 oz and it was bad. Those rods just dont load up that light of a weight. I may give it a shot on the stock spool to compare.

Super. Been waiting on this video - now waiting to see you actually cast it and how it compares to the Revo BF8. Quick question - I know that you need the extra magnets, but I am a bit unclear as to the bearing. Are the upgraded bearings also necessary or is that an optional item to improve performance? Thanks.
Honestly I dont think the bearings will make that much of a difference but I was trying to cover all the bases. As you can see the bearings are already super small so Im sure the stock balls on them were already tiny. Ill try to take it out this weekend if it doesnt flood again

I have always wondered what would cast farther with small lures for trout, etc? A small spinning reel with thin line or a bfs reel with thin line also. My guess would be a bfs reel due to less line twist compared to spinning.
I believe a spinning reel will ALWAYS outcast a baitcaster simply because it does not have ANY rotational spool issue. I also believe a spinning reel with a large spool diameter (less coils) would be my choice. How about a comparison? After the BFS upgrades are done, compare it to say a 3000 size Tatula spinning setup? I do have 3 BFS setups, Aldaberan included so not biased. Just physics.
Also, A HUGE advantage of the baitcster over spinning is that it is difficult to shorten a long cast with spinning. If casting say to under a dock, thumbing a baitcasting spool can offer superior casting distance control. This is why we need both.

Jst for a test, you can simply remove the cap and press the thumb bar, the shaft should always be here.
that bearing is one of the Xship bearings. the spool shaft passes through the pinion and doesnt contact that bearing. Thats the way all Shimanos are that have a silent tune bearing on the spool

Is the Avail Spool also for the Shimano Scorpion BfS?
Avail makes a similiar spool for the Scorpion BFS but its alot heavier than the Aldebaran spool because they use a stainless steel shaft instead of aluminum.
Does that spool handle braid well? I guess it doesn’t, but if it does I’m very impressed!

Sorry Alex, different brake systems. You would have to buy the BFS sideplate. There are spools for the regular aldebaran that are pretty light, check out hedgehog studios

I think atm the steez sv ct Roro spool is the lightest now. 5 gram with bearing and remove bearing it will be in the 3.5 grams bearing excluded.
so you have to do all this tuning to the Aldebaran to have it casting as good as the ltx. lol.

You left out a very important element, the line. Choice of line will be critical to max out the performance from such an extreme setup. First off, it will have to be braid, may be try Shimano Pitbull 4-carrier PE 0.4 rated to 8.6lbs, that would be super thin. Although I have to say I know a lot of people who prefer to use JDM Fireline 8lbs because Fireline is a fused superline, while it is super hard at higher poundage, at 8lbs it might be OK as it should offer more abrasion resistance than its braided superline counterparts. At least that's my theory. Plus Fireline has a much higher breaking strength. 20lbs Fireline breaks at 50lbs. So, I expect its 8lbs variant should be pretty tough too. But, I think it may be thicker than braided lines at the same poundage though.
Or maybe try Gliss?? Super smooth and thin.
I have 6 pound fireline on one of my BFS reels
1. I hate using braid
2. I hate tying leader knots
3. kuying says not to use a leader because of how small the guides are. I have a few JDM rods with full micros but that Kuying's tip is even smaller. Im not trying to have a leader knot bang through that tip going back and forth. 2lb flouro/mono/copoly is what Im going to use

I respect the bfs thing but I'm just using a spinning reel for my UL casting bc if I even think about spending all that my lady might break my neck 😬😬😬 but yeah that's just an awful lot of money and buying extras to do something that can be done way cheaper on a spinning set up . Like I said I respect it but it's just not for me or my budget 😂
If you want to be able to cast UL lures that are a bit heavier than the trout magnet, on BFS bait casting gear, you can get BFS suitable gear for under 100$. You don't need to spend loads of money on BFS anymore. Tsurinoya xf50 reel is around 66$ on amazon.

If you’re truly attempting an ultra-light finesse combo, why use a baitcaster at all....?? There are myriad finesse spinning reels and combos that are far superior to any baitcaster, regardless of how light it is.
The Blake you own the cheap one, calcutta conquest bfs and aldebaran bfs 2016 is something else 🔥🔥🔥 really recommended for stream fishing better than any ultra spinning reel. The best for lure casting 💖 for stream fishing
