  • How to integrate your existing Canon and Nikon speedlights into the MoLight system using the Godox X1 receiver. PLEASE NOTE: The example I demonstrate is for using this with CANON flashes. There is a slight change for when you work with the Nikon SB910, 900, 800 and 700: Instead of setting the flash to M - Manual, please set your Nikon SB flash to iTTL instead. www.michaelmowb...

    HI Michael, I'm a "Nikonian" :) When Using the godox X1T on the Cam hot shoe (D600 & D610) and X1R on SB 900 and SB 600 flashes, and when I press the shutter button, it fires only the preflash from both the remote flashes and that's it... so i'm missing out on the main flashes and that beats the cause. Can you help me out on this?

    When I go to manually change the settings with the sb-5000 nothing happens. It also doesn’t show up on the transmitter, but the flash fires when I take a photo.
    So they’re definitely communicating. Is the SB 5000 not completely compatible with the flashpoint system???

    • @MichaelMowbray48
      @MichaelMowbray48  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Power changes are made on the transmitter. There isn’t two-way communication between the receiver and the transmitter, so any changes made on the flash will not be communicated back to the transmitter, and the power setting on the transmitter will override any setting made on the flash. Lastly, you will not see the settings reflected on the flash lcd but you will see a difference in the power output when you make changes on the transmitter

      might invest in a couple. I have been using a workaround in that I have the Canon STE3 transmitters firing my speedlights which in turn fire my monos in S1 (optical slave mode) but it means for adjusting power in the monos i have to go to each of them, would be nice to be able to control the whole lot of them from the camera based transmitter

      Hi Richard, I am in the same situation as you are. Bought the Godox transmitter and receiver, and I have an older Canon Speedlight 430EX. This really would be great if it works with the SB 800s. A question, does the receiver work with the Godox Xpro trigger. I'm assuming it does but everything I've seen is with the X-1.

    • @MichaelMowbray48
      @MichaelMowbray48  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will work with the XPro. I've had mixed reports on the SB800 -- some say no problem and others say they couldn't get it to work, which I honestly often attribute to user error. The bigger issue is finding them. They are currently not in production as Godox put them on hold due to the IC chip shortage. I do not know when they will be back in production.

      Andre Fachetti Yes. Set the SB900/910 to plain iTTL - no commander or remote setting. Turn on the X1R and match the channel and group to your transmitter. You will have full control over the power of your speedlight in TTL and Manual. Just note that the back of the flash will not show the changes, but most importantly you will see the changes in the output.

    Just got the transmitter and receiver and tested with 6D and 430 EX I. TTL and compensation works well. But the power level and mode can not be changed via transmitter. Anyway 1/4000 sync speed and ttl +/- 3 stops works well.

    • @MichaelMowbray48
      @MichaelMowbray48  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alexander Jemeljanov Hi Alexander. Yes, you are correct. The older 430EX has a different internal TTL (eTTL1, not eTTL2), so the receiver cannot fully talk to the flash in order to allow for manual settings. I'm actually a little surprised the regular TTL works, but that is awesome to know!

    • @trancedrumer
      @trancedrumer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Mowbray Hi, actually based on my ebay listing where I found that ETTL-II is needed, I checked that 430 EX I still have ETTL-II. I found these modes in the manual: E-TTL II/E-TTL/TTL. I think that's why it works in TTL mode. But 430 EX II 580 EX II just have different communication and that's why transmitter can not send the power and mode info to the 430 EX I.

    • @MichaelMowbray48
      @MichaelMowbray48  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alfredo Perez You will want to use the X1R-N with this setup. You will have manual control over the flash but won't have TTL as the Sony TTL system is different from the Nikon. Be sure to set you Nikon flash to regular iTTL when using the receiver. Also, the back of your Nikon flash will not display the settings and changes that you make from the transmitter, but it will internally make those power changes.

    I use Lumix and Sony gear - I have been using the V850 in manual mode just fine with the Lumix - so will the v860 / V860 ii also work with the Lumix in manual mode - I do not need TTL -
    I am assuming the X1T will not trigger the v850 as it is 430mhz vs the 2.4ghz -
    so the receiver is now built in to the V860 / v860 ii ?? so it just needs a X1T trigger ??

    • @MichaelMowbray48
      @MichaelMowbray48  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jon. Actually, the V850 will work with the X1T if you use the new XTR16s clip-in receiver. On the flip side, I'm not sure that the V860II Sony will work on your Lumix as it has that unique Sony hotshoe. The Canon and Nikon versions should work...in manual only.

      Thanks Michael - I have several v850's ( with FT16 and receivers) - I love them - but I have a gripe about the receivers - a bit flimsy and the numbers to not align up - well I prefer a low profile trigger - so the X1t fits the bill - I assume 2.4ghz is also better then the 433 of the FT16 -
      But am I understanding it right that the V850ii has the receiver built in ?? and I can buy the X1T to trigger ??
      So I would be happy to get new flashes with builtin receiver and a low profile trigger - the X1t -
      assuming the v850ii is like the v850 in the sense it has a universal hot shoe triggering -
      I see you have the triggers on your site but not the V850ii -
      I have some Sony gear as well - although I mostly use Lumix - so to get the receiver builtin ( to avoid flimsy receiver on side ) I need to get V850ii - but what trigger should I get ??
      does the V850ii with X1T support HSS ??

With the camera mode in TV or AV, and the flash in TTL, it reads all the orders from the transmitter about increasing or decreasing (+/-) the EV of the flash power. In Manual Mode, it only shots at full power (except if you modifiy the power directly of the flash).

      When using third party triggers like the godox, molight, etc...the nikon flashes will allow only the ttl/ittl protocol in its system. However, you can use the Manual functions from the x1t and control the amount of light on your remote sb900 mounted on the x1R (even when the sb900 lcd panel is set on ttl/ittl

Now, I have also tested a YN565EX, and it works as expected, so I know the X1R is working. But the SB910 is a no-go, unless I've got something misconfigured.

    I have a camera nikon d700 and flash sb 910 sb 600 and sb 24 when using GODOX - X1 - N Triggers works with a burst of photos in Manual mode with the sb 24 but with the flash sb 910 and the sb 600 only one photo is exposed correctly, the rest of the photos are dark but the flash jumps, Then I let the flash completely load and took a second photo The flash jumps but the photo is dark. If I turn everything off and then on again, the first picture will be lit, but not the next with sb 910 and sb 600. Thought it was camera problem I tried it on another camera and it happens the same.
    With the receiver put on the sb 910 and the sb 600 I change the mode to Manual having the transmitter in TTL and it changes to Manual it doesn't pop to TTL like it happens in your video.
    Thank you

    • @MichaelMowbray48
      @MichaelMowbray48  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Angel. With your particular setup, I recommend setting your SB910, 600 and 24 to plain iTTL. For Nikons, the receiver has to tie into the TTL system and cannot access the manual settings like it can with the Canon flashes. This way, you can get both TTL and manual. However, you will not see manual settings reflected on the screen of the flash itself. It is a limitation of the Nikon system. You will see power output changing. As a side note, it is in the plans to make a separate Nikon version of this video since Nikon functions a little differently from the norm in this case.

    • @SilverLarry
      @SilverLarry 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the same issue with my SB900. Micheal Mowbray assumed the X1T would work with it but it simply doesn't with many of Nikon's speedlights (although he had a vague reference to the Nikon solution in the video description. He should have been more clear in the video.) The X1T was reverse-engineered to work with Nikon's TTL protocol only. Canon is a different story. So the solution is a work-around that works perfectly but unfortunately is the ONLY solution for this setup: the SB900 must be kept in TTL mode at all times. When the X1T is in manual mode, the SB900 will respond to changes in the power setting as if it was in manual mode with no problem, although it won't indicate the change on the LCD panel. Works perfectly like this. And if you do want to work in TTL mode with the flash, all you have to do is change the X1T to TTL and the SB900 will work properly in TTL mode as well, properly responding to usual +/- power changes. Bottom line: you can't put the SB900 in manual mode and expect the X1T to change power on the flash. I don't mind not seeing the change on the flash's LCD panel because the system works perfectly this way.

Obviously this isn't ideal for someone who needs the triggers constantly on and it drains the battery faster by being constantly backlit. Maybe its a result of the reverse engineering.

      I think this is weird, but with Nikon SB700 and I assume the 900 and 910, put the Nikon flash on TTL and then leave it there always. Do not move the Nikon flash to manual. Now on your trigger attached to your camera is where you can switch between TTL and Manual. Even though flash is on TTL, you still control manually just by changing the trigger/transmitter to Manual. And TTL works also by switching the trigger/transmitter only. No need to move the flash ever to M from TTL when using the X1(or Flashpoint R2) transmitter It seems weird, but that is how it is working. Maybe everyone else already figured this out, but I just am and thought I would share. Love this system by the way.
