Your videos have been helping me so much! I'm 18 and not planning on having children any time soon, but when I do I absolutely plan to unschool them. I've spent time almost mourning the years of my childhood I lost to school, I'm on the autism spectrum and school is only made for the well rounded few who excel at everything, the rest of us are left behind. I think people assume school is the only option/the right option because everyone's always done it, but as a result my generation has been left with massive mental health problems. Our brains are evolving and school is stuck in the 18th century.
I'm relating to this message as an adult too! So easy to think you have to be great at everything rather than focusing on and celebrating who you really are 😊🌻🌿🍃
My little one just turned four and the thought of kinder and school is filling me with dread. However, providing enough stimulation and community for life learning fills me with overwhelm!
Hello! We've been unschooling our 9 year old for 3 years now and during lockdown he asked to try school. So we're honouring that. Feels very strange but it's exactly what you're saying. Going with our children and not our "ideology" about what education should look like. I'm letting go of attachment to my ideal and focusing on helping him carve his path. It's a crazy ride 😀.
hey friend! That's so wonderful you were able to do that, I trust *completely* that all told this was the best decision for your family. I am just going to say something now, that's not focused on you, but rather anyone reading your comment. Sometimes when a child asks to go to school they don't want school per se, but something about it. It's very often something around wanting more kids to play with. It makes sense that during lockdown this would feel like a very pressing need for a child, and that school might suddenly look very appealing - rather than having to wait until lockdown eases to attend all the fun unschooling socials. Our child asked to go to school at a time when a whole bunch of her home school friends suddenly went to school. I said "I'd rather you go to a place where they respected your rights, where you were able to eat when you were hungry, move your body when you needed to, learn what you want and when. Can we give unschooling 6 more months so we can find ways to connect with more kids and more fun, and then re-asses?" She thought that was a good plan and we found an amazing local group and the "need for school" went away. I raise my story for others reading to point out that responding to a child's request to go to school isn't always straightforward but that we have to trust all the nuances in our family ecology to make the right decision! Much love x x
@@LucyatLifeWithoutSchool Yes, absolutely. Thank you for writing that. Oh, how I grappled with my own feelings about school and schooling and what you say about rights of children and being free. It is a little more complicated with my son and that is why I am going with his want in this particular case. But, I am working behind the scenes to enable a healthy switch back to unschooling if it is not working for him there. There is no pressure on him to be "successful" at school from us. I feel like I'm holding a net for him and jivvying it about to make sure we can catch him just in case. Plus, we are lucky to live in a small village with a small community so while school is still school, it is not the worst. At least here I know the teachers, I am friends with many of the parents and my son sees some of them as his 'elders' outside of the school environment as we met regularly.. Or did before covid. I see this decision as him getting to know his own mind. He did go to school when he was five and six years old because I went back to work. Sadly, his differences meant it was traumatic for him. I think there's a sense now that he feels empowered, has embraced his differences and wants to be in a classroom again with his new sense of Self at the fore. His choice taken not out of desperation to be with other kids but more of a power behind it. My interpretation, for sure. But, I sense a strength in his want that after so long of him having low self esteem and self worth, I am embracing.I have to... for him. Wish us luck! 😀 I love how you answer questions about unschooling and are happy to debate it in an accepting and knowledgeable way. Thank you, lovely! Have been following you for a while and happy you're back. 💛
I just took the plunge and started home ed. full time. Really steering towards unschooling. I watched that show, it was wonderful. I recall reading Ben Fogle attended public school but left early without qualifications. He didn't find his feet until a random trip away travelling (world schooling) Look where he is now!
Yup! I was a teacher in my pre-kids life and I loved it so much...obsessed with my subject and the euphoria from sharing that with interested students was amazing! Imagine an education where we could give and receive learning on “our” things 😍
I absolutely love your ethos!!! People like yourself put their love, heart & soul into bringing up their kids, its fabulous. But by having State Schools, it provides stability for those kids that aren't as fortunate as yours. It keeps them safe & above the radar so they can have some modicum of education because they sadly wouldn't get that support at home. The lockdown has proved this. Again, I DO love what you are about & it would be brilliant if schools did less structure & responded to what our kids interests where. I'm sure I wouldnt have played hooky as much if this as been the case haha! Take care💗🙏
Hello! Oh, I can see that, but what a disservice to those children to give them such a narrow way of being. Even more reason to speak the truth about the education system and create something fit for purpose and fit for the future :D
You also need more than one parent at home mind. I really struggle with my disabled daughter at home alone. She does better when she can go to school because society is not ready to except her how she is. She needs the acceptance she gets at school and the companionship.
I've always thought there must be a reason people are all good at and interested in different things, because inherently we are a species that lives in groups, and it's super useful if you can divide the things that need doing according to what they're good at if you live in a group! Being a little competent at everything is useful if you're a solitary animal, but since we're such social creatures..
Gosh. I have been NEEDING to hear this! So desperate to not send my children back into school, but constantly battling with myself if I am doing them a disservice by going with that. My children (6 and 8yrs) have always been happy at school, and they have also been happy at home during lock down. When I ask them if they want to go back to school, they don’t mind either way! So the decision really will come from me, which is hard (it would be easier if they said they didn’t want to go back!!!) We are committed to taking a year out and travelling in a caravan around Europe at some point (was supposed to have happened in July but with lockdown the plan has been postponed) so I am ok with the idea of them being out of school to travel, that seems to make sense (replacing monotony of school with amazing travelling adventure!) but I struggle with idea of replacing school with just being at home with me?! Mostly during lockdown day to day they play together, look after my 2 year old and that’s about it! Doesn’t feel like that is enough to warrant them being off school?! I feel like I need to provide them with more! Sorry for rambling! Needed to get that off my chest! So glad ur back! X
Oh you are absolutely NOT doing a disservice! heck no. in my opinion you are heralding in more joy, more room for them to flourish AND more regenerative presence in our world.
Hi Lucy! Awesome video! I’m trying to enrol on the DISCO course but won’t be available for the lives sessions. Can I join the course and watch the sessions later at another time and how do I do this? Sorry about all the questions🙈.
Hi Lucy! I’ve been rewatching lots of your old videos as really need reminding of it all! I’m realising that I still need to do a lot of deschooling. Is there a pay monthly option for DISCO as really want to do the course but need to budget for it which would be easier if monthly? Thank you again for all the inspiration you offerxxx
I have just decided to homeschool my son this year. I’m nervous and scared but also excited. I totally agree that this idea of being well rounded is over rated. I feel like I know a little about a lot but that’s it.
Curious what advice you’d have for families who are drawn to this philosophy yet dont have the privilege of being able to stay home and be with their children and be resources... and unable to find or afford resources outside the home with this philosophy at its core.

yes. Lots of love and empathy to you and how beautiful that have spent the time grieving so you can heal! All of life await! hoorah!
As a neurodiverse person who feels the same about school, I can't tell you how healing it is to get to be a part of this process for my child

You are just so fab Lucy I adore your videos xx
Listening to you talk inspires me so much! I feel so lit up after :)

@@quokka44 Good luck for sure and thank you for this lovely conversation :) :)
Just wondering if you could do a video on unschooling/homeschooling books that got you started on your journey?

imagine it! how amazing :D The current system serves no one, not the students, not the teacherss, no one but the current establishment...
