This actually happened! Carroll O'Connor observed Rob Reiner putting on a sock and a shoe and a sock and a shoe, and tried to tell him he was doing it the "wrong" way. The two ended up writing their silly controversy into the show.

The interview (or at least _an_ interview) with Reiner discussing the scene is here th-cam.com/video/B7xd2yg2osY/w-d-xo.html
While Reiner claims it was "improvised", my guess is while the scene was not part of the show's original script, O'Conner and Reiner wrote the scene together by playing around with some dialog and some ideas, rehearsed it a few times... and _then_ it was filmed.

One of my all-time favorite bits from the entire series! I love the way that it's apolitical on the surface, but if you look deeper than that, you can actually interpret it as being *very* political. At face value, it's a dumb little inconsequential disagreement about socks and shoes. But it's also a perfect demonstration of Archie's conservative viewpoint-- he is so fixated on his way of doing things (the 'way it's always been done', or the 'way it's supposed to be done'), that he is completely incapable of thinking laterally about the ways other people (especially the liberal Mike) might want to do things. He's hopelessly devoted to the status quo, even when there are valid reasons for wanting to do things differently. I think about this particular scene often.

I find this hilarious. My DIL shared this with me. I don't remember seeing it. I had to send it to my husband.
Ya see, I am disabled. I need assistance putting on my socks & shoes. When I first needed this kind of help, my husband would help me put on my right sock & then my right shoe. Then my left sock & then left shoe. I asked him, "What are you doing?" He said, "I'm putting on your shoes & socks." I said, " I know. But why are you doing it like that?" He said, "Like what?" I replied, " Why are you putting them on sock shoe sock shoe?" He says, " How are you supposed to put them on?" I said, " You put your socks on first & then you put your shoes on." He says, " Who says that you have to do it that way?" I said, "Everybody does it that way." I'll spare you the rest of the conversation. It continued. 🙄 He thought that I was making a big deal about it. I was just asking a question & clarifying the topic.
I told him that it was throwing my groove off. I mean that's not how I normally get dressed. It felt funny. I mean he doesn't put his own socks & shoes on that way. So why does he persist on putting mine on that way?? I DON'T LIKE IT. It feels strange. Why can't he just put them on the way that he puts his on? 🤦🏼‍♀️🤪🤯😩
He won't stop it. I think that it's a way to control something in my life. 🤷🏼‍♀️. ☮✌🏼

@@shermanmullen2406 it means one day during rehearsal of this episode Carroll O'Connor (Archie) noticed Rob Reiner (Mike) was getting dressed that way in real life and they literally argued about it in real life (not as actors but as two men) and they and the writers decided to reenact (improvise) that "argument" between Carroll and Rob into the script to have Mike and Archie argue about it. Rob Reiner admitted that that's how he always got dressed in real life...and go figure, it would take Carroll O'Connor to notice it lol

It is a perfect synopsis of how parents and their kids conflict over their living styles. That could have easily have been my mom and me when I was growing up. With me, she hated it when I buttoned my shirts down to up instead of top to bottom. I coudnt do it, whenever i tried, there was either always an extra button hole or extra button and the blouse/shirt would look lopsided. When I did it my way, I never had that problem. :)

This is so good. One cannot Believe this is acting. It's so real and I had family members that would have this very argument. I even once dated an asian girl who told me I was nuts. She's say, "No, you cannot put on sock and sock, den shoe and shoe. Dat Cwazy. If the house catches on fire, at least I can hop out and have one foot warm." I said, "but your way, you'll have to go back into the burning house coz no woman could ever leave without saving her other shoe; whereas I would simply go the garage, get in my car and go buy shoes at the nearest store..."

As a quite tall man, I’ve always done it sock-shoe, sock-shoe. My shorter siblings often laughed at me. And now that I’m older I appreciate this method for it puts less strain overall on my back.

As a short woman with a bad back and a bit too much stomach, I also do it Mike's way. I have gotten to the age where while I am leaning over or squatting down, I check to see what else I have to do whole I am down near the floor.

FACT: Rob Reiner said this entire scene was ad-libbed between he and Carroll O'Connor. The scene with Meathead putting on his shoes was supposed to happen, however that's how Reiner puts on his socks and shoes in real life and O' Connor caught him doing it, yelled at him how stupid it was and the cameras kept rolling.
