After not seeing All in the Family for over thirty years, I bought a compilation about a year ago. Not only do my children think it is hilarious, I have re=thought aspects of it. More vital than the political fights between Archie and Meathead was the relationship between Edith and Archie. How skillful and endearing was Jean Stapleton's performance. What an actress.
Later on "Archie Bunker's Place" it was revealed in a casual conversation in the bar that Edith died in her sleep. They never said where but the idea is that she didn't suffer. It was peaceful and this was to make it easier on the fans who loved her so much and to allow Archie's character to move on with his life on the spin-off show. What great characters these were.
As I remember it Edith died in bed with Archie, he woke up next to her and tried to wake her up but she never did. I'm surprised Jean didn't know that. I would've loved to have Edith Bunker as a grandmother. She was the sweetest mom in television history!
Edith Bunker was only a fictional charter on the show. When "Rob Reiner"and Sally Struthers"left the show was never the same I thought on the show "Edith"died of stroke, however the whole cast did come back for "Thanksgiving".The show was not the same after "Jean Stapleton"left the series.
I think that Jean Stapleton made a huge mistake when she left "All In The Family". There were only three networks and no such thing as cable TV back then. The show aired on Sunday evenings and there was no Sunday Night Football back then, either. This was the best show on TV back in the early and mid-70's. When Edith died, I was still a little kid and cried my eyes out. Carroll O'Connor did a wonderful job as Archie Bunker. Having him buy that bar was a great idea----but having Edith as his co-owner would have been better.
Wait - so they continued All in the Family/Archie Bunker's Place for a YEAR after Jean left the show, under the pretense that Archie and Edith were still married, and she was always off-camera somewhere? I didn't know that; I thought they killed her off in the first episode she didn't return.
It sucked when she left but they continue the show pretty well. I love bunkers place l wish it had lasted longer. I love the chick on it (the one who was on barney miller).
When Mike and Gloria moved to California, the show should have ended because the family theme was gone. Edith's death was heartbreaking and ridiculous.
Edith is kind of like the mother everyone takes for granted. Everybody talks about how great she is, but she was stuck playing that role, the foil of Archie ... which is OK, but it was only rarely that she ever really had anything to do. When she did she was perfect at it, and the show could not have been what it was without her, but I don't think they did enough with her - because in the 70's still women were in the back- ground and kind of ignoreable. But then also ... I wonder if she had any ideas about where she would want to take Edith's character herself? Anyway, I love that whole cast for bringing that show alive to my whole family at the time. We watched it every week together, one of the few things at the time and laughed. There is really nothing like it today. Modern Family is close and good, but All In The Family was really groundbreaking in the US at the time.
I didn't realize that she died until much later in the series Archie Bunker's Place. I don't remember, but I missed the first two or so months of the series, so when I started watching it, I just thought that she either wasn't going to be on the show that much or she was going to be written off the show entirely. Somehow, I found out that Edith had died, and I guess, due to youth, I said, "oh", shrugged and then moved on. It was weird to see Archie without Edith, though.
It's so shocking to see that someone so unintelligent and with that awful voice is played by someone so normal and intelligent. She must have worked very hard to put on that persona!
Pro. Logic: I am so confused at this time , is she alive or dead. I had a stroke some years ago so things like this are difficult for me to understand.
rip edith...funny how we remember things better than her,,,the slipper was under the bed,,,,and her death was with archie in the bed ..not with the kids...i guess that shows her disinterest in the show after she left
i don't think i have ever heard her spoke other than on the show and it's quite surprising. I loved loved the show, i grew up watching it and even now if I'm flipping thru channels and happen to see a rerun I'll watch it. i still love it. Great television, most shows now are just crap(full of propaganda from the left)! Love Edith and Archie!!!!
Very intelligent woman who played a very simple thinking one..so cute and funny she was a genius! ♡

I'm glad she didn't leave the show angry.Such a sweet lady.
you can talk all about the new actresses today but they don't candle to Jean.
Only the truly brilliant could play the absolute simple.....RIP Jean.
I didn't like it when Edith died, but I guess there was no other way to explain her absence. Wonderful character!
She certainly wasn't a dingbat in real life. God bless you Jean
Rest in peace Jean Stapleton
Jean Stapleton was a very classy lady. All in the Family was brilliant in it's irreverence and edginess. Broke a lot of barriers, in their truths.
I loved that show!! Edith was such a beautiful character. I can't believe how different the actress normally sounds from Edith:)
R.I.P. Edith and Jean.
Wish things didn't have to end
edith what a jewel and a treasure
Fabulous actress...
