  • Finally, a new air compressor in the shop. Our new victim is a DeWALT DXCM301 (AKA DXCMLA1683066), 30 gallon, 155 PSI, 1.6 HP, portable air compressor.
    The purpose of today's video is to discuss a bit about why I bought this model, breaking it in, and adding an hour meter so we can keep track of maintenance intervals a little more closely.

    I have one of those. It is NOT quiet in my mind. I haven't timed mine for 0 to 150 psi but I find 8 minutes way too much time. The tank is way to big for the little 1.6 hp pump. Mine is right next to my work area and the noise and running so often drives nuts.

      My Dad has the identical Porter-Cable horizontal, but I think it's a 20 gallon? He's also been happy with his, but I wanted the smaller footprint on the floor by going vertical and I'll always take more tank capacity.
      The _only_ circuit in the garage here is a single 20A, so I'm good there. I did just plug the Kill-o-watt into it and it registered 17.9A.
      Just for kicks I checked the old HFT compressor too and it registered 16A. There's probably not too many compressors that would be suitable for automotive work that would tolerate a 15A circuit.

    Black compressor may be a harbor freight 21 gallon tank. Good for the size. Weak reed valves. We had ok luck with this model. Other h.p. not so much. I have cut new .014 stainless steel replacement reed valves.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is, indeed, a 21 gallon HFT compressor. Mine keeps popping head gaskets and has been retired. For what it's worth, you can buy new valves for them.

    • @ritchiesokol1061
      @ritchiesokol1061 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have a thought about the head gasket (theory).I believe the clearances are to tight (I will explain).The company other HP I drained the oil and serviced with Tranny fluid. If you removed one or both of the compression rings would it still build pressure with a new head gasket or hone the jug and reinstall the same parts. On a model like yours I put in 2380 Turbine oil as a test and it worked as advertised.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ritchiesokol1061 I agree that maybe it could be brought back into service with some experimentation, but it was fine out of the box for something like 15 years and then blew 3 head gaskets back-to-back-to-back. If nothing else, tank rust is a good reason for that one to stay retired... plus it appears I have another, different, better, broken one to take its place on the repair agenda. 😂
      I think the old HFT is going to the big soup can factory in the sky.

  • @lyndsaymitchell9822

    Hi, how do I know if my Dewalt is dead finally? It's very similar to your new compressor, maybe over 10 years old tho. It still turns on, but no air is coming out of the hose and the tank pressure is just sitting on 50... no increase. I really don't see or hear any leaks. Thank you

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It could be a lot of things, but the only issues really worth worrying about fixing would be failed head gaskets (quite likely) or a bad check valve on the tank (less likely, but possible). Those parts aren't very expensive or difficult to install.
      Much more than that (pistons, rings, valves, etc) and it's just not worth repairing. One of the advantages of a belt-driven compressor is that you can just unbolt the entire compressor unit, pitch it, bolt a new one on, and put the belt back on. Harbor Freight sells what I'm 99% positive is the exact same compressor as is bolted on to my DeWalt tank for $150 (item #58494). If you can find a 20% off coupon, then it's extra not worth the time to mess with, IMO. The same is true of the motors. As long as the tank is in good shape, you can just bolt new "things" to the top of it forever and keep on truckin'.
      Good luck with it! 👍

      It means what it says pretty literally. If there's pressure in the tank, don't remove that bung. That's pretty true for everything that is threaded into the tank, but that 2" slug coming at you with 30 gallons of 155psi air behind it would be plenty to kill you.

      @@novavolks9652 I can't tell for sure. The part number for the pump side only refers to it as a flywheel without dimensions. I'm seeing similar compressor pumps being advertised as 1300 rpm max, with a suggested driver pulley diameter up to 3.85". Running that math backward, and recognizing these are all made in China, that comes back almost exactly to a 250mm driven pulley. @novavolks9652 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Weg electric motor must be at low RPM for the , with that 5 inch pulley it will make it rev fast with that modification your compressor will charge in 4 minutes

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not sure if I've ever seen replacement cylinder heads, with larger ports, for sale. I'd certainly be curious about them.
      Likewise, I hadn't really considered over-driving the compressor. If everything were linear, 4 minutes would be about twice the RPM and I think that would be a bit much. I could see a 20% overdrive as being reasonable to try though.
      The motor is 3450 RPM and is already as close to 2HP as I'm likely to get with a residential 120V outlet. It's rated as "SPL" on it's ID tag (and similar motors are sold as 2HP), but DeWalt advertises this compressor as 1.6HP, which is probably pretty close.

      @@TheBrokenLife The problem with this compressor, like the Husky model, which are exactly the same, is that they sell it at a very high price for the few horsepower it has. I have worked with several models with the characteristics that I mentioned above, you definitely cannot use the same motor and the head would have to be 3hp, the motor at 120V voltage at 2hp at low RPM. The Weg brand is very good. The other components can be used since they can withstand 150 psi, a maximum of 120 psi is correct.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@novavolks9652 Ehh... Really, these are priced fairly in accordance with their counterparts on the US market. The biggest problem with this general style of compressor is the 120V power. If you have 240 available, you can get a much higher output model for far lower prices in terms of $/hp. That said, in today's market, this particular DeWalt is probably about the most expensive 120V compressor available. I only paid $350 or so for mine, which was a fantastic deal.
