Never structure your life around the fear of dying prematurely. Always protect yourself against a catastrophe. And she should get genetic testing for the genetic traits that led to the type of cancer her relatives died from so she can act proactively with testing and lifestyle adjustments.

That is true, but easier said than done in many cases, if he is calling Dave about this, sounds like she is quite convinced about getting sick, that could require a therapist. Especially since other family members have been sick. Leads to hypochondriac behavior, imo

With focused intensity on health (the way you eat, physical activity and stress management) you can almost eliminate all of the chronic diseases .. Wishing you all the best for a happy life!

My wife and I have no debt besides the mortgage, and are saving big ole chunks into our 401(k)'s. We even have some extra to upgrade cars/the house, go on vacations, and eat out a ton. I agree with the advice but disagree that someone with type one diabetes and is also genetically predisposed to cancer is just being dramatic for saying she won't have a long life. It's not guaranteed that she won't have a long life but it is somewhat more likely. Family medical history is not 100% predictive but it is an indicator. You just shouldn't plan your life around an early death because if you live a long time against the odds, you've got a serious problem.

@@WideAwakeHuman You just proved it to be a fish story by citing an example of a really unlikely scenario for most people where they get cut in on a deal with a millionaire. Glad you did well, but the statistics show that the average person who does the slow and steady will do better than the average person who leverages debt. You can argue that the latter doesn't do well because they are not using "smart" debt and I can argue that it is chance as to who actually makes it out better with leveraging debt. But the overall fact that leveraging debt generally results in a poorer outcome than not remains and thus the average person is better off going with latter.

Unlike Ramsey who made a bunch of 90-day hard money loans on real estate, got caught with his pants down and paid dearly. He's against debt because he was stupid with it and it got him. Cancer survival rates go up with every passing year. Improved screening and treatments go a long way to defeating cancer. She may die of cancer (we all die of something), but armed with knowledge and many more decades of advancements, that may not happen until well into retirement age.

Mr. Ramsey is not a medical doctor/Oncologist, he is smart enough to stay off prognosticating a person's chances of illness & death over the phone. Everyone, with or without family history, should get their screenings done when advised.
