About 10 years ago, the Sci-Fi Channel acquired syndication rights for the original Star Trek television series. For years, the shows had been cut down to fit the amount of commercial time needed for current day programs (there was less commercial time during the original 60's run). Sci-Fi fixed this problem by making the time slot a full hour and a half. Dubbed "Star Trek The Sci-Fi Channel Special Edition", the episodes would be supplemented with original interviews with the cast and crew discussing each episode. The interviews and extra bits were especially entertaining since it featured more than just the standard cast but also highlighted guest actors, writers, etc.
I taped each and every episode as they aired (even though sometimes I hit record a little late and missed a minute or two). The interviews and extras really are neat, and since I've never seen them on youtube, I decided to dig out the tapes and start grabbing out all of the extra bits. I've found probably 75% of the tapes so far, and I hope to find the rest eventually. I hope it's okay with Sci-Fi if I post these. I'm just trying to get them out there for those who may have missed these years ago....
These are the extra bits from the episode "The Menagerie Part 1". Enjoy, and be sure to subscribe to catch them all. Oh, and if you have time, check out my daily blog on all things Trek: www.apieceoftheaction.net/

I watched "The Menagerie" when it first aired. I was 10. I was enthralled. But what especially got to me was how messed up poor Captain Pike was in that space age wheelchair of his. Why he didn't even look like himself any more! I was not aware that one actor (Jeffrey Hunter) was playing the healthy Capt. Pike and that another actor (Sean Kenney) was playing the paralyzed Capt. Pike. I assumed that it had to be the same guy. And so when I saw how different his face was after his horrible accident, I assumed the changed face was due to his horrifyingly profound injuries. So altho switching actors was not done for that reason (in fact Jeffrey Hunter was just no longer available and so they had to get someone else) I have to say that doing so very effectively added to the horror for me.

Why is no one talking about the story at 6:45? Am I the only one who finds that creepy?

Yeah, I was like did she just say Shatner lied to get in her trailer, tried tosexually assault her, then got angry and treated her badly when she rebuffed him? What!

I'm not ignoring it. It's horrible, and one of the many reasons, and sufficient all by itself, why Shatner is an asshole.

It's true. He supposedly jumped on Julie Parrish and dry humped her. She then said to him I think I have a choice about this. Only then did he get off of her but acted like a dick towards her throughout the filming of the episode. She never wanted to work with him again. RIP Julie. You deserved to be treated better.

Julie Parrish basically said she was sexually assaulted by William Shatner. And this was just broadcast on Sci-Fi channel without comment? Totally bizarre.

Finally got around to watching Star Trek Menagerie P1+2. It was awesome. Captain Pike is a better man than I. I would not have taken that much time to decide to spend utopia with Susan Oliver. Perhaps breakfasts at a Paris cafe. Illusion or real.

The difference between Kirk and Pike was for instance in the Cage, Kirk wouldn't have cared that she had her ass on her back, he would have been like "Well, as long as everything works!"

Lloyd Bridges. He also wanted Jack Lord, but Jack Lord wanted a piece of the show as part of his deal, so they refused him and kept looking.

Whatever the case, Hunter not taking the role strangely ended his career and he died about 6 years after ... his western Temple Houston was canceled, he ended up going to Europe doing cheap westerns, suffered a stroke and died at 42. Whatever the case, it was sure career turning point for Shatner, who would just live off of Star Trek, made-for-TV movies and some cult horror titles mixed in..and eventually a resurrection as Denny Crane. Shatner got some, and why wouldnt he? it was the swingin 60s

Hunter's death was different from what was originally reported. He was an alcoholic and one day he fell down a flight of stairs in his home and was seriously injured.

Production of each episode was taking longer and longer, thanks to al the special effects. at one point, they were delivering Thursday night's episode to NBC on Monday, WAY too close for comfort. They knew it was just a matter of time before they would miss a deadline. So Roddenberry pulled out "The Cage," wrote a wrap-around script for it, and they got two weeks of episodes for the work of a single week.

Lloyd Bridges is the Father of Jeff Bridges. He was pretty famous and starred in a tv show "Seahunt" about scubadivers. The concept was later taken by a skydiving show called "RipCord".

Number One didn’t “disappear” exactly. She was smart, cool and logical, she was merged with Spock.

I can't reply to your comment SuperOnican, but that is not the story I saw on bio of Jeffery Hunter. According to the Bio, he did not die from a stroke, but from a head injury while doing a film in Europe., I can't remember which one, he obtained the injury while doing a scene. Later he passed out and fatally hit his head on some steps.
Ironically, during his shooting with Star Trek pilot it was his then wife, later his ex-wife, who caused him not to go on with Trek. In the 50's Hunter was a movie idol, until Robert Wagner came on the scene, and Hunter's then wife, who was trying to control his career, acted as his agent and felt that Hunter was a movie star, not a television star. And of course Roddenberry, was having trouble with her. This cost Hunter his role as Captain Pike.

Hunter actually thought he was too good for TV and thought of himself as a big screen actor...that is why he didn't take the role permanently. Ego.

I heard it was Hunter's wife who thought playing Kirk was beneath him. After all he's a movie star mentality.

Im sure I had heard that Jeffrey Hunter wanted too much money and left the series. Then they got Shatner and did another pilot
