My impression was the Talosians had somehow figured out what happened to Pike, reached out to Spock and compelled him to bring Pike to them. This makes sense after learning the Commodore was never on the shuttlecraft with Kirk despite being light years away. It would make more sense if one of them had reached the Starbase and made himself invisible to people's perceptions?

I guess the reasoning behind Pike's now-willingness to accept perpetual illusion as reality is that, previously on Talos IV, he was young and healthy; now, he is trapped in a useless body, so now he wants illusion to free him from it. BUT why does he trust the Talosians, who tortured him earlier, to be kind to him now? Why do Spock and Starfleet trust them with Pike's welfare? Spock knows what they did to Pike earlier.

A paralyzed former starship captain has been abducted from a starbase and taken to the only planet regarding which contact means the death penalty. You're gonna tell me they couldn't put together some sort of morse code using that?? Nod equals long, blink equals short, there you have it? And as far as creating beeping lights from brainwaves go, I feel like there should be a lot more options possible other than "yes" and "no".

@@swhite7929 Yes, I take your point. Nowdays, people with Locked In Syndrome communicate by blinking as someone calls out the letters of the alphabet. There was a book written that way, I think called "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly".
This would have made the subsequent TOS story impossible, though, becuse if Pike could have communicated, he would have told Kirk what Spock was planning to do. They would have had to rewrite the story to make Kirk decide to conspire with Spock instead of leaving him in ignorance.
By the way, I totally agee with you about Spock in that scene being seriously adorable. I too could have hugged the bangs out of him -- but then that's my usual reaction to Nimoy's Spock 💚.

Why would Spock have placed loyalty to one man (Pike) above loyalty to Starfleet through abiding by its regulations? Visiting Talos IV is the only capital offense left on the books, according to the episode. The Talosian power of illusion is so great that Spock is endangering the entire ship by taking it to the planet. This is illogical, as Pike's body cannot be repaired in reality by the Talosians. Furthermore, the Talosians treated Pike horribly while he was in their captivity, torturing him mentally. It is incomprehensible why Spock, who knows what they did to his former commander, would entrust Pike's welfare to them NOW. Plus, Pike doesn't want Spock to hijack the ship in the first place. How does Spock know that they have changed their ways, and will not torture Pike yet again if Pike is turned over to them?

Note that there is a huge continuity error in this episode, involving the character of Christopher Pike, a former starship captain, and a hero. Being of the utmost integrity, he at first fiercely opposes Spock's mutiny in taking him to Talos IV, back to aliens who once tortured him. He blinks "no" over and over again. While the Talosians had him, he fiercely resisted their mind games at every turn, and eventually prevailed. He doesn't want to live a life of illusion, even in a now-useless body. Yet, at the end, he reverses himself completely. Why would he now succumb to the narcotic of constant illusion, especially remembering what the Talosians did to him earlier? This is completely contrary to his character, and personality.

They had hair dye back then. Should have dyed his hair Black or White from the exposure... blonde doesn't work.

They said Rodenberry wanted starving men, but I guess they weren't any available in L.A. that year with agents and actors' guild cards.

The head Talosian was Meg Wyllie. Her voice was dubbed, if I'm correct.

Because he isn't. The disabled Christopher Pike was played by Sean Kenney.

@@sandal_thong8631 Far enough, but surely in the 90s and hopefully he would have had it in the 2260s.

Why is his wheel chair less sufisticated than Steve Hawkins? One flash for yes two for no. You'd think they'd have a red and green light system. Bet you trekkies didn't know how Captain Pike's human waste is dealt with. The bottom of his chair contains a huge litter box draw which pulls out from the back for cleaning. How did Pike get any exercise in that chair? If you look at the side which is covered by dark glass panels you'll notice Piles legs pedaling on a stationary bike. Although his chair appears very primitive to Steven Hawkins. He has a steam sauna mode where it becomes a steam chamber. They place a towel around his neck. Due to budget cuts in Star Fleet. Pikes chair also cleans the ships hallways as two rotary bristles spring out in the front.
