      It's so great watching this. The "introduction to the series segment" is so cringe! I saw TNG first run as a TOS fan and think I saw this segment, and... oh dear this doesn't sell it ;). And the D's exterior looked... odd ;)
      Heh, I was 17 and I would say the general mood of fans like me was "please don't suck... please don't suck..." We WANTED it to be good but sequel TV in those days almost never worked.
      It should be remembered what TNG pulled off was unprecedented. A sequel series to one of the most iconic series ever, and managing to become an icon itself.

      I was a kid during my family's annual Octoberfest when I saw the first TNG episode. I loved it! I enjoyed TOS but I thought the characters, special effects, music, and story in the first two TNG episodes was excellent. Q became my favorite villain.

    Watching the interview with Wil Wheaton.. Seeing how young he was... and knowing what his home life was like at this time of his life.. I have nothing but respect for him.. The poor kid was living in Hell with an abusive father and a mother that was an enabler.. They also spent almost all of the money he made while working on TNG... I can understand why he would go on to say that he loved going to the set every day... if only to get away from real life...
    The entire cast was wonderful.. and I got my inspiration to become a Personal Support Worker from watching both Gates (Dr. Crusher) and Marina (Commander Troi)... I am also seriously considering going back to school once more to get a degree in Community Health... So I can work with those that are battling with eating disorders... and also drug addiction...

      Hi, @peterrock4733 --
      Good observation.
      This is the full Electronic Press Kit, which was sent to many TV stations across the country. It was never distributed to viewers as you see it here.
      The intent was to drum up press coverage, by providing footage and pre-packaged stories for those TV stations to include in their own programming (e.g., newscasts, entertainment shows, etc).
      The pieces were configured so the narrator you hear could be readily replaced with the voice of the local talent/reporter instead. So it's actually possible you did see some of this, in that form -- just not as presented here, or in its entirety.
      Having run across this tape recently (for the first time in 35 years!), I thought it was a great little time capsule -- from a time when no one knew that the show would become the classic that it did.

    • @media-ron
      @media-ron  ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Great observation.
      Actually, it was distributed directly to broadcasters for promotion of the show - hence, not laserdisc, but by satellite. The original would have been mastered on 1” Type C (or possibly Betacam SP) videotape, both professional formats with better fidelity than consumer formats in general use at the time.

      @media-ron  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Great observation!
      Yes, that's likely, if they were working off raw dailies (which may well have been the case), or off an initial edit of the show (pre-ADR and sweetening).
      A few years later I was able to visit Modern Sound for a day -- including watching the crew of three mixers mix an episode (on a 96-input console, wired to four 24-track audio tape machines) ... ADR recording (of Jon Frakes and Gates McFadden) with supervising sound editor Bill Wistrom ... and also getting to hang out with sound designer Jim Wolvington.

    The last interview with Will Wheaton, he really laid into how much he disliked William Shatner from the TOS Series. And honestly? It should have been a book on how NOT to treat an impressionable young man who really thought of Shatner as a bit of a legend and hero to Will. Shatner was a complete jerk to Will, made fun of his costume, and refused to shake his hand. Sheesh what a d*ck!!
    Don't get me wrong, Shatner (Captain Kirk of the first USS Enterprise) is looked up to, and very fondly remembered as the Captain who launched one of the greatest franchises (some say THE greatest) in cinematic history. This is THE Captain Kirk!! And someone that Will Wheaton genuinely did look up to. Until he actually met him and realized the man has a universe spanning ego.

      Sad. Of course, it can only be about his own insecurity.
      As I recall the story, others in the TNG cast came to Wheaton’s defense, then Roddenberry found out about the whole thing, and put his foot down.
      Shatner was uncharacteristically nice to Wheaton after that.

      I was not a Trek fan before The Next Generation. When it premiered in 1987, I didn’t even know this show existed. I didn’t start watching TNG until the very start of season 3, having missed seasons 1 and 2 entirely. A few episodes into season 3, I was completely hooked and obsessed with this show. I remember during the early part of season 4, they started showing a few episodes of season 1 and 2 at like 4am on tv where I lived. I would stay up all night to watch them, not realizing how DIFFERENT seasons 1 and 2 were from season 3. 1 and 2 were very sketchy looking and acted by the actors, they were so stiff, and the show seemed very wooden and maybe even kinda low budget compared to what season 3 looked like. Especially season 1. It’s almost like they fired every single behind the scenes person that worked on seasons 1 and 2, and rehired all new writers, producers and more from season 3 on. It was just that much more elevated in every way. Sure seasons 1 and 2 had some great moments, but they had more cringe worthy bad moments than good. Season 3 was near perfection, season 4 was even better than season 3 and I believe 4 was the shows absolute peak season. Season 5 was great too but there were a few cracks starting to show in the quality of the writing. Perhaps already running out of stories. But it was still excellent. Seasons 6 and 7 were excellent as well, near perfection, but I still believe season 4 was just hit after hit after hit.

      Think of it this way-if you go back to your hometown after being away for years, or even the school you went to, its not the things that have changed that bother you, its the things that are exactly the same, that throw you off balance. Cult TV is the same, its like a timeloop, where no one ages, and it can throw you for a curve. Its a snapshot in time, like old photos. Star Trek is something special, and as Picard said in Generations 'Time is a predator that stalks us all. Its tells us to treasure every moment, as they will never come again'

    I’m curious if there were any affiliates who originally agreed to broadcast Star Trek: The Next Generation had considered, or even had actually dropped the show from their channel after the lackluster performance of season one, which really wasn’t that good. While season two of TNG was a little bit better, it wasn’t until season three that TNG became a great show I regularly watched at 6 pm on Saturday night.
    A friend of mine who also watched TNG noted that one of the problems with the show, especially during season one, was that there were in several instances of two characters playing similar or even the same role. There were two captains (Picard and Riker), two security chiefs (Yar and Worf), and two counselors (Troi and Guinan). With such a large cast, it was easy for an actor to get lost in the shuffle, or not have their character clearly defined as to what their abilities were, and how their character could be useful in a story. I think this was the reason Denise Crosby quit the show because there really was nothing for her to do.

    • @KNPrince
      @KNPrince 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are right about Denise Crosby asking to get out of her contract.. Her character was very under developed in her opinion and it was getting tedious to basically parrot the same lines of dialog from one week to the next. Still she did have a few scene where she shone as Tasha Yar... and I always considered her to be one of the best parts of the TNG crew... I was 9 years old when the character was killed off... and it was the first time that I ever cried while watching a TV show... It took me a good week to get over her sudden (senseless) death... I don't have to tell you how excited I was when Denise returned in the third season for the episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" It was a much more fitting end for Yar..!

    Great stuff. There is repeated concern expressed about whether the show will live up to its predecessor. And that's how it should be: a sequel series to a still beloved show 20 years later SHOULD hope to be as good and as loved.
    Instead of today, where SOP is the latest sequel to wtf ever is supposed to be just accepted as brilliant and beloved and if not, well, there's just something wrong with the fans.
    I also think if you watch the show, it's clear that there was an immense amount of effort producing it, far higher than a typical show now. The closest I get that feeling now for a sequel series is Cobra Kai.
    That said, in that point, I do understand the tv landscape has changed a whole lot in the intervening years. Though TNG was syndicated, it still had as handsome a budget as any prime time hour drama of the day.

They showed Geordi's visor in someone's hand as they explained the hair barrette thing. (and maybe how they constructed the phaser out of common household items). 2. They explained that they always shot the enterprise model scenes upside down to make it look more realistic when in flight. (In the documentary here, it seems to show them filming it sideways?).

      Typically an EPK like this is being produced on the same calendar deadline as the production itself. And often, by different companies (and at separate facilities).
      In other words, the promo crew wouldn't be working from the finished episode itself, but rather, from another copy of the same set of raw footage that's also being used to put show together. [That was my experience later on, doing work for this same company.]
      That can easily translate into different choices being made in selecting from that same raw material.
      My guess would be that accounts for the difference.

      The VHS Decode project (if that's it) I'm guessing is a way to reconstruct a component video signal from composite and pseudo-component (luma/chroma-style) formats.
      I'm not sure that'd help, in this case, given the particular signal flow involved, which resulted in a component recording (Betacam SP). So, no, it's not sourced from VHS.

    It’s really too bad Denise Crosby left the show before it hit it’s stride. I believe had she remained, they would have really expanded her character and wrote wonderful stories for her. Personally, as much as I loved Worf from season 3 on, I would have much rather had Tasha Yar stick around instead of Worf. Tasha could have been a much more interesting character, but I don’t think both characters on the show at the same time worked. The writers were constantly fighting over whether they should give this or that scene to Yar or Worf, or giving this or that line to Yar or Worf as both were essentially working the same position kinda sorta. Yar was wonderful as the Chief of Security, as was Worf later on. But there was really no room for both of them at the same time. Worf being a Klingon was more of a natural fit for Chief of Security, there was other position he was suited for.
    I always disliked the character of Wil Riker. I always thought he was kind of a throw away character, the Picard on the ground. If they had to eliminate any character from the show, I’d wish it was Riker. I believe it would have been a much better show had Tasha Yar be Captain Picard’s Number One. Imagine her character as the Enterprise’s first officer, with all her childhood trauma etc. I think it would have been a fascinating role having her as Number One instead of Riker. To me, Riker was always the one character that was unnecessary to the show. I even like Wesley Crusher better than Riker.

      Interesting point. I'd certainly be interested to see the results.
      I can tell you where it's been so far:
      It was originally shot and post-produced in NTSC (486i) video, then distributed as composite video over satellite, then recorded onto Betacam SP videotape ...
      Then, let the oxide marinate for about 35 years ... :)
      Followed by upconversion to 720p (via Teranex upscaling firmware algorithm); then uploaded to TH-cam, which did further up/down/cross-conversions, and compressed it further for streaming.
      Though I think this probably still looks at least as good as the original, for what it's worth.
      Actually, the most amazing thing to me is that a production like this -- which at the time was key to the launch and successful continuation of one of the most important entertainment franchises in existence -- would end up lost to the ages, and is only now being rediscovered, thanks to someone who happened to record it off the original satellite feed back in 1987.
      So be it, then. That's what TH-cam is for. :)
