About 10 years ago, the Sci-Fi Channel acquired syndication rights for the original Star Trek television series. For years, the shows had been cut down to fit the amount of commercial time needed for current day programs (there was less commercial time during the original 60's run). Sci-Fi fixed this problem by making the time slot a full hour and a half. Dubbed "Star Trek The Sci-Fi Channel Special Edition", the episodes would be supplemented with original interviews with the cast and crew discussing each episode. The interviews and extra bits were especially entertaining since it featured more than just the standard cast but also highlighted guest actors, writers, etc.
I taped each and every episode as they aired (even though sometimes I hit record a little late and missed a minute or two). The interviews and extras really are neat, and since I've never seen them on youtube, I decided to dig out the tapes and start grabbing out all of the extra bits. I've found probably 75% of the tapes so far, and I hope to find the rest eventually. I hope it's okay with Sci-Fi if I post these. I'm just trying to get them out there for those who may have missed these years ago....
These are the extra bits from the episode "The Menagerie Part 1". Enjoy, and be sure to subscribe to catch them all. Oh, and if you have time, check out my daily blog on all things Trek: www.apieceoftheaction.net/

The account of Jeffrey Hunter leaving is practically legendary now, but I've heard it confirmed by multiple sources. After doing the pilot Hunter scored several big screen roles.
When they wanted to shoot a second pilot Hunter's agent called him. His wife answered and famously told his agent that, 'Jeffrey does not do television acting anymore'.

Out of all her Star Trek incarnations, I will always remember Majel best as Number One. Thank you forever, Majel, for proving in your own right that women could be equal to men in the SF for the 60s. Thank you too, Rebecca, for successfully recreating Number One on Discovery. 🖖🏻

When they referenced "The Lieutenant", they left out "333 Montgomery", which Roddenberry wrote and in which De Kelley starred.

You're right. If you listen to the Keeper's voice in "The Menagerie", you can tell it's Malachi Throne. They changed it electronically so as not to confuse the audience.

" No.One, there's little we know about this planet, so there's no reason for me to ask for any help from you. Make sure some man runs the ship while I'm gone ." " Yes Captain". How the 1964 crowd wanted it. It's the 23rd century for Christ sake!!!.

"Unconscious racism?" Trek had two non-white major co-stars at a time when that was never done.

The "professor" failed to mention that most of those old "fanzine" stories royally sucked. Number One was a woman. It's established canon. Uhura had several episodes where she had more to do such as "Mirror, Mirror" and "I, Mudd" to name a couple. She even took command once in the animated series.

Not to mention, let's be real here, not everybody on a show get's equal screen time. Especially back then with shows fitting the TV format of that time. You have one, maybe two leads, a couple supporters, and then the borderline extras. Most of the bridge crew were just *there*. Sulu could easily have been replaced by Desalle.

Uhura was a wonderfully interesting and well rounded supporting character these modern commentators are just mad that women still looked and acted feminine, I like that myself

I always thought that Jeffrey Hunter was unavailable for the next Star-Trek pilot as he was asking for too much money to return to his role of Captain Pike.
I didn't think he was dropped by the network at all - it was purely a financial consideration which worked out well for Shatner and the rest is Star-Trek history....

I always thought Jeffrey Hunter's wife made demands that Gene Roddenberry didn't want to deal with her on a weekly basis.

Was it really necessary to have ridiculous commentary from silly professor who probably didn't even watch the show? Now I don't know if I want to watch the rest of these
