There is no surprise here, Eva steps up to a mic in a bar and makes MAGIC!
No autotune , no second take, no studio, just pure talent.
And she was suffering from a cold at this performance...she almost didn't perform that night because she felt she wasn't in good voice. Even with a cold, she was angelic.
Talk about controlled dynamics .... at 5:42 she goes from the very top, and in one word "rainbow" she brings it all the way back down. Total Eva.

Judy Garland's version was sung as a Show Tune, which is exactly what is was. Eva's is like you say, almost a lullaby, and plays with your emotions on another level. Her guitar playing was so integral to overall feeling of the song. The way she would bring up the guitar from the background in moments when she was not singing and then drop it back was masterful. I have listened to this version hundreds of times over the years and it still will make me cry if it catches me on a day when I'm susceptible due to being lonely or just sort of blue. Just twists my heart and makes me join her feeling the hopefulness that the lyrics promise. Her version of "Falling Leaves" is the finest version I have heard. Also her "Fields of Gold", Stings lovely song, is just about as fine of a cover as the two aforementioned songs. Loosing this amazing talent before she even became popular was a loss to the world of music.

Elle a été enregistrée et filmée en Janvier 1996 au Blues Alley dans les environs de Washington DC.
Tu devrais d’ailleurs voir cette vidéo car c’est elle qui joue superbement de la guitare.
En mai de la même année, elle apprenait qu’elle était atteinte d’un cancer de la peau incurable, et en novembre elle n’était plus parmi nous 😢

She touched you deeply and to me this was your finest reaction to an artist I have ever heard. Michael, it must be pointed out that she was also the guitarist and she played it masterfully and beautifully. She did become quite famous after she died when her music was discovered. You were right when you were questioning her commitment to her career or the lack thereof. She didn't aggressively promote herself and why she didn't, perhaps we will never know. One other sad note to mention is that she was unaware of her condition at the time of singing this song but she passed away less than a year after this.
Michael, one last thing if I may. You spoke about the break in her voice near the end. Your explanation was fair and particularly very considerate. It was an emotional part of the song and she had obviously given 'her all' to the song and the break was not something to be forgiven for. Rather it was an expression of love which for a moment, overwhelmed her and, to both of us it fit in perfectly with the song and her overall performance. Thank you. Btw, there is a mash-up duet of Eva and Angelina Jordan singing 'Fields Of Gold' together and it is quite good and reinforces the idea Angelina is someone to keep an eye on as she continues to grow. She will be 18 in January.

Eva died from skin cancer 10 months after this show ... she sang from her heart and still touches our hearts ❤
To me, the song is about longing, and we can all go through a time when things could be better and we yearn for them to be so. She's telling us this, that maybe a wish, a hope, will take us eventually to a happier place.
She did not want to be pigeon holed into one genre which is what the record companies wanted and she did not want to do that.
She broke her voice on purpose, and makes it better. So no flaw at all.
