Somehow she needs to get a Grammy for this performance..I would love to see the audience reaction if played at the awards..Jaws would drop and tears would fall..What a loss to the world.

She refused to be part of the music industrie („They will force me to sing crap“) and died too young. Another good example for one of the best unknown voices.

You sir have just discovered the greatest vocalist/musician whoever lived. Pick any song you want from her library and you will begin your journey. Everything she ever did was spectacular. Enjoy!🎺

Don Really he did not !!! Young Lucy Thomas from the UK covered Eva's version as a tribute to her and did a better job singing it, as Lucy is a better technical singer accompanyed by a fantastic guitar player James Franklin and it was magic, and remember Lucy was 17 when she sang and recorded that song, It is a happy version vs Eva's sad version, and yes I know all about Eva's cancer and death, a tragic situation but at least give Lucy's version a listen and see what you think as a tribute to Eva !!! You will be impressed !!!

I discovered Eva while travelling in Britain, a friend had her “Fields Of Gold” on cd in the car. I bought the CD the next day, but this performance to me is a master class in so many aspects - how to cover a classic song & make it your own, vocal dynamics, breath control, phrasing, vibrato as it should be, guitar composition, you name it. With, as far as I know, very little formal voice training. So good & so sad we lost her so early, over the rainbow.

Greg IF you liked Eva's version listen to fellow Brit Lucy Thomas sing a tribute to Eva, it is stunningly Beautiful accompanied by a fantastic guitar player James Franklin. All of Lucy's songs are on You Tube under Lucy Thomas Music. you will not be sorry!!!! As a side Lucy was 17 when she sang this song, not even born when Eva died !!!

She is amazing, a gem that I recently was guided to. This recording was on Jan 3, 1996. In June she discovered she had skin cancer and in November she was gone. What a loss!
She has many other amazing covers such as Field of Golds (Sting) and she was versatile as well and was a great jazz singer.
I now listen to her song very regularly and always feel the soul and emotions as you said.

I never get tired of listening to Eva's vocal gift. Remember, this is a live recording at Washington, D.C.'s Blues Alley nightclub. Oh, and Eva had a cold that night. A proud daughter of our DC Metro area here, Eva lives and lives and lives. #RIP Songbird.✝✝✝

I read somewhere that she continued performing until only a few days before passing November 2, 1959. She actually had to be helped on stage as melenoma cancer was not only in her organs, but was also in her bone marrow. She had a gift that just kept on giving! 😪

I have heard it claimed that her cover of Sting's "Fields of Gold" is one of the few Sting likes. Her original work is quite good as well. She sadly died of malignant melanoma at the age of 33 in 1996 so the number of recordings we have is small. She was not well known during her life but BBC radio in 2000 played the album Songbird and interest in her skyrocketed.

If you want to hear the upper end of her vocal range AND really belt one out phenomenally, try her, ''Blues In The Night''. In fact I hafta crank that one up on TH-cam right now.

I came here to say this. What most people don't know is that, she was aware of her demise when "live at blues alley" was recorded. I own her full library and biography, I recommend this one to all who feel she only does slow entrancing covers. Songbird, I know you by heart, Fields of gold, and How can I keep from singing.

To listen to what Eva does with any song she covers is to truly hear and feel the meaning of the song for the first time. Her voice and her guitar together are the perfect duet.

you dont need to watch a video for eva's voice to move your soul.... remember also unlike the original version and many other covers this was sung live in a club...

blastingweevil Watch Fellow Brit Lucy Thomas's tribute to Eva here on You Tube and it too was sung straight out with the most beautiful guitar accompanyment by James Franklin !!! Acclaimed by most critics as the best version ever.....

Judy Garland made this song famous in the 1939 movie "The Wizard Of Oz". Eva Cassidy did such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.

I have watched this video of Eva and heard that they are simple guitar chords. But you don't have to be a guitar "extraordinaire" to play the song.
Eva understood the song and the chords that were needed to accomplished the song the way it sounded in her head, in her soul.
The guitar chords she used, are the only ones needed to get the song laid..... and the point a crossed.
10+ millions records sold , proved the point...…..

When I tell friends or family to give Eva a try, I say listen first, do not read anything about her. An unbiased reaction is my intent. One coworker said it's like she has a voice from the angels. Then he read her biography.

If you loved her you will absolutely love the Hawaiian legend “ Israel Izzy” . He was the FIRST to sing this song the way Eva did (1980s) and he also passed in his 30s due to obesity ( weighing over 400 lbs). You will love Izzy’s version. Please don’t miss it ( do it privately and you will thank me).
All love from Miami Beach Florida,
    Al

Yes, Lucys version is technically superb but simply does not have anywhere near the emotional impact that Eva Cassidys has. By the way, if you didn't know Eva had a cold when she was recorded singing this iconic version.

I always get choked up by Cassidy. I think her soulfulness would get me no matter what, but knowing the world would soon lose her talent, watching her sing this song in particular squeezes my heart.
From your comments. I think you would enjoy Lara Fabian. Master of both technique & emotional stage performance. Hard to choose which song to recommend, so I'll just go with the jaw-dropping performance that was my gateway drug to her. Je Suis Malade live from the From Lara With Love concert, French with English subtitles onscreen. I've admired & enjoyed many vocalists, but Fabian stopped me in my tracks. Would love to get your thoughts.
