Oh man. 2 obscure kickstarters in Spirit of the Rice paddy and Red outpost. Both are in my gaming group. Kickstarters done right. Pure, simple but still well produced and really well thought outut.
@@JesusIsTruthAndWayAndLife I was just looking at buying La Granja since I can get it for under $40. The upcoming 2022 version is a “Deluxe Master Set”, which means it is likely going to cost double the original. I’m not sure if I want to spend that much. Hopefully it does improve the solo mode if needed, but the BGG description doesn’t specifically say that.
Agreed on Fields of Green. I prefer the space theme and asymmetric player powers from AtS, but the engine-building aspect of FoG and the scoring being at the end instead of every round makes it a better game for me.
Any thoughts on how how the farming games from 1979 ("The Farming Game" or "Profit Farming") stack up to your list? Caverna / agricola ******** Viticulture ******* Happy Pigs Bohnanza Scoville Fields of Green / Among the Stars Hallertau Red Outpost Takenoko Spirits of the Rice Paddy BTW, on the Last Archive podcast, they talk about how the Farming Game was invented.. great episode!
Viticulture, At the Gates of Loyang and Agricola: All Creatures Big & Small for me. Could be Agricola and Fields of Arle as well, but I need to play them more to see where they fall. I do love Bohnanza too, though I don't get much of a farming feel from it!
Fields of Arle is better and more thematic than more than half this list. But it's not my list. I like how Tom tried to throw in the farming theme used in as many different ways as possible.
Clans is not a farming game, it has area control with "farm symbols", mostly. And then resource markets and recipe fulfilment. Not a field in sight, though.
Viticulture is overrated. Very little control when it’s all about the cards, since their powers are usually better than any actual working spot. For a quick game I also recommend Harvest, which repurposes Ra’s cool sun value swap mechanism.
Yes, people who love the game generally know that the cards are imbalanced. Yet they still love the game, imagine that. They have this strange idea that they are having fun.
@@Okami31 Right, it certainly makes a great deal of sense that you would not want to give anyone “new to it” a chance to enjoy a game that you do not enjoy. Everyone should demand that all of their board games are perfectly balanced. In case you did not catch it, that was heavy sarcasm.
@@Okami31 Of course most or all of the cards are better than the board spaces. It’s implicit in the game design. And some of the cards are better than others. And some are better than others depending on how you are playing.
As soon as I saw Spirits of the Rice Paddy at number 10 I thought "he's not gonna put in Takenoko, is he", and then he did :p Don't get me wrong, I love Takenoko, but it doesn't belong on this list imo.
Funny... When I started watching this, I was sure my comment would be, "What about Bohnanza?"... but boom #4 made my comment pointless... so I wrote this one instead. :)
Just because board game genres can shove what everyone did for life and work before the industrial revolution under the label of "farming" doesn't mean that there isn't/wasn't a massively diverse amount of experiences and themes under the label of farming. It just means under the current world view if there isn't war or money its called farming because we can't conceive of what would be so interesting about something without war or money. I mean, la granja sells itself as a farming game but it has nothing to do with the actual farming part really.
Honourable Mentions:
Agricola (2007)
Clans of Caledonia (2017)
Fields of Arle (2014)
La Granja (2014)
At the Gates of Loyang (2009)
Walnut Grove (2011)
Citrus (2013)
Bohnanza is one of my house's favorite games. We teach everyone who comes to visit!
Agricola all the way lol
can you do a top 10 trading in the Mediterranean games?? :)
Fields of Arle for me
At the Gates of Loyang and La Granja are my favorites (along with Agricola).
Love these series of videos
Of what ive played, Viticulture is probably my favorite.
We played Bohnanza a couple of months ago, and we enjoyed it so much. Fast-paced and chaotic, we definitely recommend it.
Harvest belongs on here!
La Granja? So good
I love Happy Pigs. It is out of print everywhere.
Happy to see Fields of Green!
At the Gates of Loyang by, of course, Uwe Rosenberg
It makes sense that Tom would do a top 10 farming game list. He's outstanding in they field after all... ;)
I already know my favorite won't be on the list because it has roll & move mechanics, but the Farming Game is sooo good.
Oh man. 2 obscure kickstarters in Spirit of the Rice paddy and Red outpost. Both are in my gaming group.
Kickstarters done right. Pure, simple but still well produced and really well thought outut.
Heartland is an overlooked gem.
Fields of Green is my #1 for sure. I LOVE that game, especially with the expansion added. After that I'd probably have Viticulture as my #2.
Fields of Green is just so lovely to look at. The artwork is amazing. Which is rare for a game of this theme.
My son (8 years old) loves playing My Happy Farm. It's a very simple game but glad it is getting him into gaming.
Came here looking for a game my kid might like (she loved farming) so thank you
I would love a game about modern farming.
Then you need to check out Fields of Green!
Or the Farming Game.
Okay, thanks I will try to find a review of Fields of Green :-)
Low Lands?
Agricola and Fields of Arle but I immediately knew that the pig game will be on the list and I predicted the No. 1 correctly as well 😁
Little sad that Harvest is not on the list, I think it is better then most games on the list, but very underrated unfortunately.
Harvest is a great little game!
Love Harvest, it's fun and quick.
That box cover for The Loop has been on the wall behind Tom for several weeks
Pandasaurus sponsors them, he talked about the box lids in a previous Q&A
La Granja and Walnut Grove would be on my list.

It's also a much better theme for a lot of non-gamers.
Great list. I am not a big fan of Bohnanza however, one game I would add to this list would be Reykholt.
Any thoughts on how how the farming games from 1979 ("The Farming Game" or "Profit Farming") stack up to your list?
Caverna / agricola ********
Viticulture *******
Happy Pigs
Bohnanza
Scoville
Fields of Green / Among the Stars
Hallertau
Red Outpost
Takenoko
Spirits of the Rice Paddy
BTW, on the Last Archive podcast, they talk about how the Farming Game was invented.. great episode!

Harvest Dice
Viticulture is our favorite, Agricola All Creatures Big and Small also great for 2 players.
Fields of Arle and La Granja.
I love SCOVILLE!
Nice review. Not many out there for this game.
Clans of Caledonia
Nice top 10, we need to give a few of these a try!
Clans of Caledonia would be on my list but at least you had the correct number 1 lol
Uwe Rosenberg, The List
It's exactly what I was thinking...except for the number 4 because this would be my #1 (if you can include expansions).
Surprised not to see Heartland from Jeff Allers.
La Granja is my favorite.
My brain heard "Piggie con a me." LIke "O-a no! That piggie con 'a me!"
Top 10 Farming Games
............no Agricola.
SHOTS FIRED!!!!
Lol!
Love you Tom. :)
I love Fields of Green and think Viticulture and Agricola/Caverna belong, but the rest...
Fields of Arle...nuff said ;-)
Fields of Arle is better and more thematic than more than half this list. But it's not my list. I like how Tom tried to throw in the farming theme used in as many different ways as possible.
I like Formosa Tea a lot 🍵
My list has Agropolis and Snorta on it.
Good list, but I mist Agricola and 'Stenen tijdperk' witch is a dutch name of the game in the list. And perhaps point salad?
Bohnanza is good, but that is a stretch!
Mi Tierra, New Era
I missed Clans of Caledonia and La Granja on your list Tom.
Clans is not a farming game, it has area control with "farm symbols", mostly. And then resource markets and recipe fulfilment. Not a field in sight, though.
Anyone not call #1 :D?

You can enjoy whatever you want to enjoy of course but I don’t recommend it to any one new to it.

AGRIIIIIIIICOOLLAAAAAAAAH
Just kidding. Never played it.
What about the stardew valley board game? Its one of the best games of all genres
La Granja
Who really considers Takenoko to be about farming?
As soon as I saw Spirits of the Rice Paddy at number 10 I thought "he's not gonna put in Takenoko, is he", and then he did :p Don't get me wrong, I love Takenoko, but it doesn't belong on this list imo.
Yeah, really how can you have a top 10 farming video and put in takenoko, but leave out agricola, fields of arle and at the gates of loyang.
Garden dice.
I like Agricola, but I know Tom doesn’t like it as much, so I suspect it won’t make the list. Edit… it was mentioned tangentially!
La Granja.
cue the rage because Tom rated Happy Pigs higher than Hallertau :-D
It's a technicality, but a place that you grow animals is a ranch, not a farm.
Star Dew Valley the Board Game?
Funny... When I started watching this, I was sure my comment would be, "What about Bohnanza?"... but boom #4 made my comment pointless... so I wrote this one instead. :)
The Farming Game. Made by a guy local to me.
Isn't Takenoko more of a gardening game than a farming game?
no no no, El Gaucho all the way =)
Piggy-conomy
List needs more Harvest.
That was a stretch...
No fields of arle? Lol
This is getting closer but still not top-10 sheep
Can we have a stretch goal in the next Kickstarter to get rid of the saxophone music?
Agricola isn't even on the list!!!! It's not only better than caverna, but it is the archetypal farm game.
Is an ofictianato someone who pretends to really know a lot about something?
Thanks Tom... Although...
Didn't you forget something..? 🤔
(Cough
CoughTerraformingMarsCough
Cough)
😲👀🙈
