Love your tech car tips, Scoot you teach so well
All you have to do on an OBD1 is jump the two right most contacts of the outlet for the reader to accomplish the same.
Thank you Trump. Drill baby drill
Watching Scotty is better when not quite sober
Fully agreeed, sober I can handle, not sober I laugh and stuff
also with the volume off
You mean he's not sober?
I used to do a lot of OBD1 troubleshooting on GM cars.. You don't need a scan tool. All you need to do to read the codes is use a paper clip. Turn the key to on not running, and make sure the service engine light is on steady. Then short pin A to B on the diagnostic port and read the codes from the light just like you did. (I already had a list of OBD1 codes to troubleshoot with). Now days all you need to do is to google the codes you have to troubleshoot.
Yes, a paper clip is a valuable tool for OBD1 owners like us. 👍👍
I am the original owner of a 1994 Ford Probe GT, and watching your videos help me stay motivated to post more videos of all the repairs I have done. Stay strong 💪💪 💪 💪
Thank you
@Scotty: I'm pretty sure the connector just shorts two of the OBD1 pins together. I've done that myself using a jumper wire with two slip on connectors. The book is were the value is!
That absolutely brought me back to my teenage days having me remember my old 1991 Chevy S10 Blazer 4.3 throttle body when Chilton's was your best friend😅
Scotty you are a GEM...thanks for what you do
I would say that 33 year old truck is more solid and mechanical better than most two year old vehicles nowadays!
The late ‘90s-early ‘00s American trucks and Japanese cars were probably peak automotive engineering.
I had a '92 GMC 1500 pickup that had a 4.3 V6 and 700R4 automatic. Not a whole lot of power but that thing ran like a champ.
This is maybe the BEST video Scotty EVER made!🎉🥳👏
Agreed, it's pretty incredible.
@@nuthinbutloveYes, Just reading that OBD-1 like a BOSS!
"We'll tighten it up later"
Said every one of us guys who never tightened it later lol
I love Rat Trucks. This reminds me of my 1982 Ford Ranger. I drove it until it caught on fire and burned up
Old skool vehicles are the best
I ❤ SCOTTY ... YOU SAVED ME SOOO MANY TIMES.from Nova Scotia
We need more Scottys in the world!
Wow! I have a 1994 C 10 and have a similar problem.
OBD2 came in '96
@gerryrice4848 thanks
@gerryrice4848 so what do you think it is ? I fixed vacuum lines. T.B.I.unit ,wires gas cap. Put cleaner in fuel filter, etc
I have a '87 GMC . I obtain the DTC using a jumper (aka paper clip) on the data connector. Also, I learned that GM isn't consistent with code definition between different engine platforms and model years.
Thank you very much for the video sir.
The headlight buttons just took me back a few decades, core memories unlocked!!!
Hey scotty do you have a tip to pass emission test? I have p0420 code
"Not a vehicle I'd jump in and drive to California !!!" You're crack'in me up Scotty !!!
From the look of that old clunker, it's not a vehicle I'd jump in a drive across town
there are obd1 scanners that provide as much info as the obd2. A guy at my local O'Reily's auto has one and used it on my 95 Regal. Unfortunately no auto repair shops in my area has the ob1 scanner.
I was a big fan of Subarus from the 70s through the 90s, at least, but I have to say that later ones, especially, are prone to flood damage. Storm-flooded ones are commonly shipped to northern states (where Subarus sell better, anyway) and sold as if they've never had a problem. Then they turn up engine and electrical problems by the dozens over the next couple of years. You gotta check!
Great advice!
Aye Scotty...he solves another car problem !!
Those S-10 were problematic
My 39 year old Toyota truck (bought new) goes to Lowes and Home Depot....that's it.
WOW! How many miles?
The character limit on comments won't let them put such a large number...
Indeed, memories😂. I had that tool, worked great. I do have to giggle when Scotty is checking vacuum pressure😂😂😂. Great to see old stuff running.
On my 92 silverado i always used a paper clip to jump 2 points on the obd plug and it would flash out the codes the same way lol
hey now, Scotty. l bought my '07 4cyl. Tacoma from a one-man used car dealer in 2011 with 91k miles for $9,000 cash. l drove it in my delivery business another 173k miles. l changed the fluids like clockwork. other than a battery, tires and brakes the only repair was replacing the plastic water pump with a metal one. now that it's 17 yrs old l recently needed an alternator so l bought one online ($157) and my mechanic charged only $84 to install it.
6:37-I like the hood release. 190K plus is pretty good for a 2.8.
Wonder how it was maintained?
My 1995 Ford Contour has OBD-1 and 180,000 miles on it and still runs great. 😅
My 1994 Mercury Cougar XR7 4.6L 105,000 miles runs and drives like a new car and looks it too. I got it from my mother. It has almost new shocks and struts from the dealer because one of the shocks had a slight leak. Recently replaced a coil pack by reading the dash light flashing. My parents took immaculate care of it. I love the car, low and sleek.
Aren't those powerball numbers?
Thanks Scotty
Derek with Vice Grip Garage calls that fuel system Terminal Broccoli Injection.
LOL
Brings back old memories
Mr. Scotty knows best!!! I wish he was closer, cause he'd be only mechanic I would trust! My 93 geo prizm Lsi sedan needs TLC so badly!!!! I ❤ your videos Mr. Scotty, you're definitely a Gem!!! God bless you!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
DiY!
Whats with Ford? They have a recall for a trim piece on a 2018 explorer thats coming off on the drivers side windshield for 2 years now. I suspect it might have something to do with removing the windshield. You would think a trim piece would be easy to fix. I'm still waiting, no word on it.
TY for Sharing
It's so crazy I drive my old man 92 Chevy s10 with the 2.8 v6 with the 5 speed. Too mine don't fully crank over. Got new starter and new battery. But I believe it has the code 23 or 24 rich or lean code.... I believe Scotty watching me.... From my problems... Are you....
I just bought one that has a screen that does all the counting and leaves a number trouble code numbers...Its a OBD 1 WITH LED SCREEN
Yeah I have a 95 Nissan pickup, no Check engine light, replace so much stuff, takes off and accelerates fine but idle so low and sometimes dies only at idle and can’t figure it out
So where does the 'dead' vac hose connect to on the other end can you check for pressure there.. if none - then what ? , replace the tube ? , where does vac pressure originate ?, just swapped one problem for another, what else now doesn't work either without It's vacuum 🥴
I remember reading old Oldsmobile codes like this with the flashing lights.
I had a 76 Oldsmobile delta 88 royale and a 1987 Oldsmobile cutlas supreme with t-tops
Hopefully those flashing lights weren't in your rear view mirror.
Being an older professional mechanic in the 90's, you don't need the scan tool for GM. The others below are correct a paperclip and a Google search.
Fords And vacuums i remember them shitty days under the bonnet in the winter snowy cold mornings lol..
I agree Scotty, I wouldn't go to California in that truck either
it's best to stay away from California at all times anyway.
Truck is still better than the junkers they make now
How big is the oil stain on your driveway?
what is code 33?
I love these old vehicles!
In general I'll take a 1992 Chevy truck over a 2022. I don't care if some people call it a dinosaur. Dinosaurs are big, have sharp teeth and claws, and can inflict a variety of damage. There you go.
I thought a bird was in that carburetor on my small screen phone 😂
Scotty u need that magnetic clip on camera
My 1989 ford ranger is like this. I just use a jumper wire to read the codes
If your car has a manual transmission, you must fix it and drive it forever.
Secret, secret, Scotty's got a secret.
Old cars are easy to fix and rebuild.
You’re the best keep up the good work😊
I can't tell you how many times I saw people with the hood up saying their car just died and refuses to restart. I would undo the vacuum hose on the MAP sensor. If the car started after that, I found the problem. Easy...
Scotty you fixed it. Good now run it in the demolition derby. Can't wait for that video!
Duck tape! Off and running! That's a nice little buggy! Fix the vacuum, GO!
Customer loyalty developed over 4 decades of outstanding reliability and dealer support finds me considering only two manufacturers…Acura and Honda. So essentially one company. I’m also comfortable with the wife’s driver, a Lexus.
Yea, I used a paper clip . Read code with flashes
Used to have a 92 Sierra until the clutch grenaded into the transmission, it was 4 on the floor with overdrive
That OBD1 "tool" is just a jump wire. You can literally use a ... jump wire.
Personally, I use a paperclip.
Paperclip
@@wwenzel1011 same here. Jump wire and read the flashes
Nice! Someone made some good money selling this "tool"!
@DarkForce2024 i remember the paperclip trick on my 80s GM vehicles
A lot of people here don't know what they are talking about in the comments!
In some areas, it's a school holiday.
I have a '94 V6 Nissan Hardbody. Would that obd1 device transmit the codes to the check engine light? Or is there a better adapter, as my ecu is under the passenger seat? And any chance of a video on the new Nissan truck D..?.. cab on frame that are already being made in Mexico? It may cost $22,000 here in Canada. Love what you do here Scotty. Down with that turd Trudeau..! ❤🇨🇦
Use a jump wire

@@youdontknowme2915 so, are you charging at work?
@@youdontknowme2915Don't go on a long trip.
I seem to recall that you can get the codes from these older GM vehicles by turning the ignition switch ON-OFF 3 times and it will give you the flash codes without needing the OBD tool
Why do you need a code reader for OBD`1? I could always get the code blinking lights by turning the key on and off three times and then you get the codes. Unless this was unique to the Dodge Dakota, which I doubt. You would just need a list of codes. On the Dodge it was 55 codes, I believe.
I've used that method for a 94 Honda, and a 93 Mazda, so, your right, I'm pretty sure you can do it for any OBD-I vehicle.
GM required jumping 2 pins on the OBD1 Port and then cycling the ignition key three times. Dodge was peculiar, depressing the trip function on the speedo to display codes.
Any idea how to do it on a Toyota??
@@Lili-xq9sntried google lili, or the owners manual or chiltons repair book?
Just hook enigma to it
Sir I need your help I need to know the color of each wire for crankshaft position sensor it's burnt and I can't tell we're each wire goes on 2016 chevy express van 3500 can't find the color diagram for it.
Find out why it burnt first and fix that. Find similar year truck or van with same engine and look at similar pig tail wires on the diagram for the sensor. Factory is cheap so that sensor will be in lots of models with the same- RELUCTOR WHEEL Tooth count.

I would like to have seen how vacuum pressure was reestablished?
He either replaced a hose ... or swapped hoses maybe put in a Tee then used that to go to the MAP sensor.
I miss the old cars and trucks they didn't have all this hi tech crap, they (the trucks and cars) were actually fun to work on. That was the "Good old days".
The price for the item is only for one year. Then you gotta pay for it to work. I wish Scotty would mention this. It seems he is getting paid by these companies and is no longer unbiased 😢
Well folks Scotty is not to accurate on this of vehicle / system .These later model GM vehicles OBD1 have decent communications for the time ,as do others that were OBD1 at the time , SNAP ON made a great scan tool for these vehicles,. many people may have forgotten about,MT2500 scanner gives decent live data PW,EGR percentage,O2 voltage range ,MAP/MAF hg or gps ,missfire and much more !!! Quick and easy to hook up for codes/ABS/Airbag as well ! The old BRICK it was called ! Many are still out there ! Still have my old BRICK scanner ! If you play around with late eighties to nineties Big 3 vehicles its a tool worth having around even just for quick checks !!
I use a GM tech 1 and you can see the data stream.
about the same kinda piece of zhit as a2002 colaroda ...
I've no recollection of ever seeing this before. No offense, but I didn't miss much.
Mom got herself a '92 S-10 with that same engine back in the day. 2 tone, it was sharp. That little truck would shoot you down the road. She even added a leaf on both sides, that little critter would haul a load. She sold it to someone else before she even gave me a chance at it.
Then I bought a brand new '94 S-10, 4 cyl 5 spd which turned out to be a lemon.
e
nice video
This old clunker will outlast any new POS that that they make today!
I have a Celica 94 and drives and looks like new. How on earth is that truck is such a dismay?
Used some paperclips to jumper the connector wires to read the flashing lights on my 97 Accord. Looked in the shop manual to see what they meant. Wish I still had that car.
OBD1 97? What country was the car from
Why is 200,000 miles the life of the engine??
Drive to the svrap yard while it moves 😂😂
For some reason I can smell the inside of that car.
That's hysterically true!
How do I treat my 2021 Buick with 4 cylinder with a turbo? I want this car to last as long as it can 😊
1) Don’t commute with it
2) Don’t drive it in stop-and-go rush hour , low speed traffic
3) Park it in a garage
4) Oil and filter plus air filter change 4k miles or less. Use full synthetic
5) After starting let it warm up for 9 seconds
6) Don’t drive it like you stole it.
If u want it to really last buy a beater car for commuting and go on weekend drives with your good car.
Make sure to have transmission fluid and filter replaced a.s.a.p. and every 40,000 miles. And...get radiator coolant changed every five years.
you bought a paperclip in a plastic box ......
Hey Sir, have you developed some kind of a data base of your advice? That would be a wonderful help.
Scotty-AI
My father had a '91 S-10 model.
The first year he had it, he was washing it and the paint came off the hood. GM wouldn't cover it under warranty, which made him mad.
i still have my O.T.C monitor 4 from back in the 1980
