You should give the group Everything but the Girl from the 90’s. I think it is similar in feel to this song. The song on the LP Amplified Heart is “Missing” Actually, the whole album is fantastic.

Absolute gold. Mick Hucknall (the singer) wrote this song when he was only 17. It is about his Mother abandoning him and his father when he was only 3 years old; the soulfulness, I believe, comes from that pain. "Hoping for the arms of Mater" (wishing his mother would come back), "I've wasted all my tears, wasted all those years"; My God, how utterly heartbreaking.

My husband and I were 80’s kids. We played our music for our kids as they grew up. We’d grab tennis rackets, wooden spoons for guitars and microphones and play music really loud and dance all over the house. They LOVE all types of music. Now that they’ve grown & flown we still enjoy serious karaoke during the holidays. 😅

Mick Hucknall is the lead singer. From Wikipedia: "Hucknall, born at Saint Mary's Hospital, Manchester, on 8 June 1960,[4][5][6] was an only child. His mother abandoned the family when he was three; the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write "Holding Back the Years", which would become one of Simply Red's biggest and best-known hits." 😁

Greetings from London, brilliant reaction. Pure gold uk soul. The era that produced some of the most inspirational music of the century. Simply Red, Sade, Soul ll Soul, Loose Ends, Sybil, Imagination, Lighthouse Family, Terence Trent D'arby, Jamiroquai to name but a few of the best of the 80s. I would however encourage you to listen to a young man who is undeniably the best singer in the world today, The Voicebender, Dimash! Pick any song and you will never be the same, he will blow you away. And just so you know I have seen young black rappers cry on hearing Pavarotti, black people know good music instinctively that's why many black men who react to Dimash become instant fans. I wait in anticipation for you to hear him. UKDear💙👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Try his 'A new flame', 'If you don't know me by now', 'Moneys to tight to mention' and 'Sunrise' songs. Mick is a incredible singer and had a hard childhood as his mum walked out on him when he was very young.

Oh wow!! I am glad you loved it! His name is Mick Hucknall, I really do love him so much. He begun in the late 70s in Manchester within the punk soul funky area music. Than he realized he was born to make just the songwriter and band leader. So he set up the band Symply Red. Since then he was immediately hitting the top of the top allover the world beginning by Italy , Milan and spinning around. I saw him the first time in San Siro Milan in 1986 ... last time it was in Padova on the 15th of December 2022. I can reassure you he is still a Big performer and very nice with the people. He loves to sing and have a big party with is audience. Mick Hucknall is one of my favorite ...
    Xx

He (Mick Hucknall) sang this live on a TV show in 86. I was speechless, the depth of feeling in his voice and the pain. In recent years the story of what this song was about (abandonment by his parents) really resonates. I've been there and feel his pain.

Simply Red is one of the biggest selling artists in the UK over the last almost 40 years with almost 40 top 40 songs and 5 straight #1 albums in the UK .They have a few hits in the USA but never the same level of success as the rest of the world as their music generally doesn't fit a radio playlist as a whole. They're a bit of Soul, Funk, Pop, Jazz, and even some Reggae. In the USA they want to classify you. Their 1991 album Stars is the 11th largest selling studio album of all time in the UK and #15 overall. They just completed a 70 date tour in Western Europe playing to over 1 million people and selling out almost every show. The lead singer is Mick Hucknall, he generally does a cover or 2 on every album as he feels it's his way to pay tribute to the artists that influenced him Here are some suggestions. Soul - If You Don't know me by Now or Angel, For Funk try Thrill Me, She's got it bad, or Maybe Thinking of You from 2019's Blue Eyed Soul. For something Jazzy my Favorite Simply Red Song Sad Old Red, or maybe It's only Love, Try Sunrise, For Your Babies or maybe Fairground for something more Pop. Night Nurse or Ghetto Girl for some Reggae. A couple others to try Stars, You've Got it, and their remake of You Make me Feel Brand New. Regardless of what you listen to it's and absolutely the best male voice I've ever heard

Another great reaction, Polo. He wrote this song when he was 17 based on his troubled childhood. If you look up some other live performances through the years, you will find he sounds like the original recording every single time, even in his most recent performances. I love the bass line too. Amazing soulful rendition.
    Thanks for the analysis.

Also Terrance Trent Darby when he first came out... he did a couple of amazing songs. But yes another by Red is "Money's too tight to mention"... and "IF You Don't Know Me by Now". As a single mom of three together we spent many a night sitting on our 'quality time couch' listening to these types of songs while watching the fish in the lit-up tank... swimming peacefully... dreaming together.
