Mick Hucknell sounds as good today as he did decades ago. A true rarity.
Indeed !
I don't care what the punks and RnR's in my life say, I'll defend this song to the bitter end. LOVE it.
Amen sister!!🎵🎼🎶💜
I was an east village punk from the beginning and I never heard a single human anywhere EVER say a negative word about this track or Mick’s vocal skills. You’re talking to the wrong people 😊
@@dcg4mn lol it was tuff around here being a punkrock who also loved funk, soul, jazz, reggae and musicals. Although "Rocky Horror" helped for the latter
That’s hilarious you listed “also” cuz at the time I still secretly loved the Dead ;))) >> never trust anyone who doesn’t love funk and R&B ;) - we started digging hip hop and rap too.
Mick has a wonderful voice. He wrote this when he was very young. Autobiographical.
If You Dont Know Me By Now is another song of theirs to try. A cover but great
Absolute fire.
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Definitely one of their best
The original is better.
Liberty etc. The Original is
This is stunningly beautiful ❤ LOVE Simply Red
It's crazy that Mick wrote this song when he was 17! It's one of the most beautiful songs ever written in my opinion!
It was when he realised his mother was never coming back..SO much hurt in his voice...
The man has an incredible talent 🔥 and several songs worthy of a listen imo
He injects so much emotion, story, and life into each note. Soul singing comes from the depths of one’s being, not incessant riffs and runs.
“If You Don’t Know Me By Now”, “Sunrise”, “Stars” and “Fairground” should be next. AMAZING 🤩
Love “Sunrise”
Their version of "If You Don't Know Me By Now" is a cover from 17 years after the original by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.
Stars is one of my faves ✨
Sunrise is amazing! Stars and If You Don't Know Me By Now are also a must!
"For You Babies"
Brilliant arrangement, lyrically poetic, and that one of a kind voice.
One of the most haunting and memorable songs ever recorded.
It's about his mother leaving the family and was written when his was very young.
Nice reaction!
He can do anything with his voice, yes! He's amazing! The band is a rabbit hole❤
All these years later his voice is still just as great.
Their album stars is brilliant I could listen to this man all day
Pure class then and now. Songs that will stand the test of time.
One of the most underrated singers and bands. Love his voice ❤
On my top ten favorite songs of all time, this one is number 3. The extended version is awesome.
This song is about the trauma when his mother abandoned the family when he was young.
Potentially one of the most beautiful voices ever 🙌
Simply Red is so totally talented
Money's Too Tight (To Mention) is more upbeat and funky. It's incredible, and a definite next song. So good to hear this classic!
My fav.❤
Mine too. I believe I have the 12" extended version.@@user-fq8rs7rz3i
A cover but they are better than the original
Yeah, this is a very very emotional song. Done so well. It’s a classic.
"Stars" and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" are two fantastic songs of theirs worth checking out.
Filmed in Whitby in the North East of England, not to far from where I live. A beautiful seaside town.
I didn’t know that! My Mum grew up very close to Whitby, but came to Australia when she was 12. It was really special to visit the UK and especially the area where she grew up a few years ago.
Yep, I grew up there & was at primary when this was filmed. Spiritual home of the goth thanks to Dracula.
* "If You Don't Know Me By Now"
* "Stars"
* "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)"
* "Sunrise"
You should check out the live version of this song at Montreux Jazz Festival 1992… simply amazing!
Their concerts are 🔥🔥
I think you will find his voice is remarkable regardless of the song you choose. Mick is magnificent!
My husband and I have seen over 100 bands since the early 70's and Simply Red would be in our top five. He sounded as good live as his recordings. Saw them in a smaller venue with great acoustics. Jose Stone was being featured that night in her first trip to North America. She was only 17. She did 4 or 5 songs and blew the audience away. It was a great night.
He’s brilliant live and unaccompanied too. Best concert I ever went to.
Same!!
Try - If you don’t know me by now or Stars.. definitely a rabbit hole worth diving into 🏴
Love this song. He has such a unique voice & tone. It’s beautiful
His vocal skills are among the most skilled and nuanced of ALL time and genres, right up there with Ella, Aretha, Nina and Louis ❤ So nuanced in fact, one can easily miss the little twists and trails at the end of phrases. You’re right: they imply SO much more possibility…
My wife and I were walking down the street way back then, around the corner from the Plaza Hotel when we recognised Mick and Simply Red walking toward us. We all locked eyes and smiled as we passed. The next evening they were on SNL 🎉
Stars.
Thanks! You saved me from having to type that. Oh wait…
The muffled trumpet must be the most haunting sound in music
I like that look you had when youre looking at him saying thats not the dude i pictured sounding like that
The Rick Astley effect😅
‘If you don’t know me by now’ is a great song. Definitely hope you play more Simply Red soon. It was the only cassette my dad, (who’s passed away now) would let us have on in the car, he loved Simply Red. Infact we actually played a Simply Red song at this funeral ❤ Stars is also a great song
SIMPLY RED with the talented singer/songwriter Mick Hucknall used to fill stadiums, back in the day.
"MONEY'S TOO TIGHT", "IT'S ONLY LOVE", "SUNRISE", "A NEW FLAME" and "SOMETHING GOT ME STARTED" are but a few of their many hits.
They still play stadiums!
I was amazed how natural his voice is after seeing his live performance at "Symphonica In Rosso", close your eyes and it sounds just like the albums.
He wrote this when he was 17. Something got Me Started is one of my favourites, also Stars. He still sounds just as good today
This song is simply beautiful, I love it!👍👏👏👏💜
Saw him sing this live with just a guitarist and the entire audience in Birmingham UK. Beautiful song.
Always liked this song. Classic!
Simply one of the best bands from the 80s still going strong - their live concerts on TY are brilliant - Sydney Opera House concert before Covid sensational! One of the great voices - simply. Uptempo 'Money's Too Tight To Mention', "Come to My Aid" "Fairground - my personal favorite" If You Don;t Know Me By Now" another Ballad (cover) best for later.
Instant classic right here! Love Mick/Simply Red❤❤
It was the 80’s and the UK had some amazing Gingers….lol and yes they could all sing
I remember Mick singing this live on Top Of The Pops with just a piano…..rare as everyone was miming their songs at this time….really impressed me been a fan ever since.
I haven’t heard this for a long time. Thank you for reminding me how good it is.
If You Don't Know Me By Now is a must!!!
Cover song.
Stars is my fav song of theirs. It’s just so good.
I saw them when they toured in like 1986 or 1987. I was interning at a radio station in college and I got to meet the band after the show They were amazing live.
Simply Red - one of my favorite bands. Such beautiful music. There are many great songs on their albums. Such unique voice
Such a beautiful sad song. Such a great voice. Mick Hucknall ....you should hear him live..
Another beautiful song I am sure you'll love : The Blower's Daughter by Damien Rice. Hauntingly beautiful.
some vibrato is HIS voice; wow!....quivers
Filmed in Whitby in Yorkshire, beautiful song, beautiful place.
And Mick Hucknall sounds every bit as fantastic now as he did then. “Money’s Too Tight To Mention” is an up tempo favorite from them!
One of my all time favorite songs. His voice is still amazing.
Stars is one of my favourite albums. His voice is just bliss!
The place in the video is Whitby, North Yorkshire, UK. The old building is a destroyed abbey and the town is linked with Dracula.
Love this song. People were always so surprised to see what he looked like.
Nostalgic songs.....80's here 😊😊..simply amazing
I saw them live in Riga, Latvia many years ago and they were really great live!
I still play this soulful song regularly! It's so beautiful, and Mick has an amazing voice! ❤❤❤
He does a beautiful song titled 'For Your Babies' which is
worth a listen.
This band was my favorite when I was in my 30's, sounds so good still all these years later. i still have their cd's.
Legend. His voice is phenomenal. Even after all ‘the years’. I love watching their concerts here on YT. They’re so good the whole band and he really is a great performer. He charms the crowd. 👌🏼👌🏼
Stars is my feet good song. I could listen to it on repeat.
I was 14 when this came out and even then I realized this band and singer had such a different sound. I still remember Stars on our jukebox at work when it came out when I was 20. I still have Simply Red songs on my playlists over 30 years later. Glad you discovered them!
One of the most incredible, genuine voices ever!! I love this song!!💜💜🎵🎼🎶🎸🎤🎧🥁🎹🔥🔥
Great to see scenes of the holy and wondrous Whitby Abbey at the beginning. The rest was too dark to see, but the music was as beautiful and soulful as ever. I once sported that coif.
Money’s Too Tight and The Right Thing are rockers, well more up tempo
Amazing band and phenomenal in concert! His live cover of "You make me feel brand new" was incredible...
A hauntingly beautiful song ❤
Beautiful soul searching song❤️❤️❤️❤️
I wish for once a reactor would do the original studio version of this song, instead of the shortened radio edit version, which is what this version is. This music video version also has instruments added in that are not in the original, and a faster tempo. Original is more sparse and moody. It’s the one I remember from when I was younger.
The piano only version on top of the pops was a performance to remember.
You could be curious for more but thats all he had to say
My favourite Simply Red Album, and one of their best songs. (It's always the first one)
Very emotional song as well as If You Don’t Know Me by Now. I love listening to reactions to love songs that my wife and I sang often to each other.
"Money's too tight to Mention" is good and reminds me of my sister, back in the day 🤣🤣
They’rere so unique!!! And his voice is just as good today!!!!
Great band to see live.
How great is Simply Red!!!! Listen to anything … it’s all great
Simply beautiful.
Sophistipop was my favorite genre when I was in High School...Johnny Hates Jazz, Swing Out Sister, Breathe, and many more. Also, Holding Back the Years is a big favorite. Simply Red has many great songs. My favorites are "Sunrise" (with a great Hall and Oates sample), "Home," and "Fairground."
Stars is my favorite Simply Red song. Definitely check out more of their music.
Early days, still going great band!!!!! All good songs
Love Mick, his voice is so good! He sounds just as great live too. This is one of my favorite songs ever.
At least one of my alltime favorite 50 Songs since 30 years.
That Harmon mute in a trumpet makes such an iconic sound -
'Kind of a tinny, rattling, distant sound. Thank you, Miles Davis, for employing it as your signature adaptation to a straight trumpet voice, and thereby bringing it into a wider usage.
Tim Kellett, trumpet solo.
Growin up with Simply red... They are brilliant! Thanks for reaction! Greetings from Serbia!
They're so good. I'll never forget when it came out. The first few times I heard it I thought it was new Carly Simon! 😄 It was right around the time she'd made a comeback with "Coming Around Again" and when he does the lines "I'll keep holding on..." with the background vocals it sounds just like her. I ended up getting all their singles and several of their albums through the years. You should try "Something Got Me Started"...was big in the clubs when I was DJ'ing.
Mick Hucknall was one of a few men who attended a 1976 gig in London showcasing one of the biggest names in Punk to come out the UK - The Sex Pistols. Near him were also Peter Shelly and Howard Devoto - The Buzzcocks and Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook - Joy Division, then later New Order.
Love Simply Red - Stars is my fave.
"You've got it", " It's only love"
So many hits and beautiful songs from Simply Red. Next please listen to For Your Babies, It's Only Love, If You don't Know Me By Now, Stars, Sunrise, Something Got Me Started, Fairground, Say You Love Me, Never Never Love, Evry Time We Say Goodbye and many many more.
LOVE Simply Red, have been a fan since l985, thanks for the reaction, more please!!!
Yep, you DEFINITELY got to check out his/their other songs.
He does "If you don't Know me by Know" really good, check it out.
Absolute fire.
There is a reason this went to #1. There is no surprise to this either. Raw emotion perfected with phenomenal lyrics woven from a hauntingly beautiful voice like no other heard. This song tore through the very fabric of many and touched all by the masses with no denial. #1 for a reason alright.
Amen to that, my friend. Such a unique way of phrasing that; so many groups/singers appear to lay their message and lyrics on with one coating; I think the best artists are the ones who present their wares with a light touch that begs the listener to ask for more.
One of the best voices, happy you did that one.
If You Don’t Know Me By Now” and “Stars” should be next. He is Awesome
Say you love me is another great song by Mick
Fairground is a great song also!
Still touring and filling huge crowds. The song Stars live in Rome is pretty amazing
Crowd participation
Stars and Sunrise are my favorites!!!
