really, it's just the slope glitch (the same glitch in sonic 2 oil ocean act 2 or ice cap zone but this time knuckles freezes on the last used animation frame)

Super late reply, but yeah, they set the "sprite layers" to always on top so that you can see Knuckles when clipping on the wall, which wasn't the case normally.

I think it's just the least amount of turning. It's faster to jump over a bunch of rings if it means not having to turn 4 times.
