Sonic's gone to plaid in the latest TAS by marzojr ( tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/m... ). It starts from a savestate to take advantage of Hyper Sonic from the beginning of the game. (For more details, see the note below and the run's comments.)

Note: This movie begins from a save state from the end of regular mode in order to access Hyper Sonic from the beginning of the game. There is no other way to access it outside of a hack. We normally do not accept movies which begin from a save state.

Ok, normally I can understand how these glitches happen, but WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS 17:30?!
Pretty sure what happened was that Sonic was trying to grab the switch at the same time he was hanging onto Tails and the game didn't know what to do. Something similar can happen in Flying Battery.
As for specifics, I dunno.
@@Gamesmarts194 there's probably a "jump to sprite (ID)" on the code for both switch and hanging on Tails.
Since the code can't switch to two sprites at the same time,it freaks out

yeah, they're just waiting for the camera to lock in the boss's area and teleport Sonic there, since that's based on the actual camera position and not Sonic's

Camhack means if Sonic is off screen the emulator will force itself to see what is sonic doing off screen
Yes. When TASing Sonic Games like these, it's important that you have camhack. It's one hell of a frame saver.

It's interesting how as the game goes on there are little visual glitches even in stages where no clipping has been done yet- Knuckles in the beginning of Mushroom Hill, for example. It looks like all the repeated zips and whatnot are taking a toll on the game's overall stability somehow.
Yeah, that's somewhat good programaned cutscenes there...😅
What you're seeing is camhack at work. No visual glitches there, only how the sprites were coded to behave

An encode that puts Sonic at the center of the screen whenever he's offscreen. The emulator forces itself to show Sonic.

it's a human playing with frame advance and other miscellaneous tools to craft a theoretically perfect run
it's not possible for humans alone, but my using frame perfect inputs and glitches a run like this is possible(doesn't count as legit for obvious reasons)

Why does the speed run feel fake
it's tas, tool assisted. certain tools are used to craft a theoretically perfect run not feasible by humans.
Fun to watch but if you're going to use Hyper Sonic most of the way you may as well just enter the level select and go directly to the last level.
