When you complete a square of spheres, the blue spheres left, and ones you converted to red, get turned into rings. If you collect all the rings, you get a perfect bonus. Unfortunately, the "completed a square of spheres" checking code isn't that robust, and can mis-count or misrecognize.

Im confused. I remember these being 2 separate games. You had "Sonic The Hedgehog 3" and "Sonic and Knuckles. You could place the StH2 or 3 cartridge into the S&K cartridge in order to have Knuckles as a playable character in those games, but I dont remember anything special other than that. I think there was also a button code to be able to play chaos emerald levels on incompatible cartridges.
S3 + S&K creates S3&K, the full Sonic 3 game, which connects the ending of S3 and the beginning of S&K. It also lets you play as Tails and Knuckles in all of the levels, lets you play all 3 bonus stages, and lets you collect those Hyper Emeralds. It's pretty much the definitive way to play Sonic 3
Really feels like it...especially to those who played Mania, but alas...this game doens't keep track of which stages you perfect scored. Plus I find genuinely speed running the special stages a lot more unique and entertaining so I'll give it a pass.
On hydrocity it's bc the bubble would make sonic bounce instead of jump most likely Either that or maybe the stage loads in differently on death or smth. Idk
@@oost_javelnWhen transitioning to Act 2, Act 1 is still partially loaded, which would ruin the level wrap. The death reloads the stage and unloads Act 1, meaning the wrap goes off without a hitch.
@@possumorb3770 Yeah IIRC he would run into the edge of the level and die as it takes time to load Act 2's level geometry, hence the slow wall chase part and the numerous one way doors.

So long that I'm not sure if I can do them over again. also, fuck the carnival night zone for that stupid floating platform. finally, what I've seen I prefer the marble garden zone boss fight with tails available to sonic although sonic being alone does look easier.
the way this fella approaches special stages irks me in a way words can't describe. and why does he not collect them all? hyper Sonic is available as early as marble garden, at least it was on the ds ports, you never had to wait until mushroom hill to get it for any character
I dont think so, but I'm not 100% certain since i've never played the ds port. The main reason you first get the super emerald rings in mushroom hill is because that's where the & Knuckles portion starts
Because when angel island is set on fire, the game actually loads in Act 2's data. Act 1 only covers the very beginning before the stage gets set on fire. When you leave the special stage, the game loads the level data of where you entered from which includes the music, and thus the game uses Act 2's music.
