Excellent video, great graphics, very helpful split screen. For me; one of the best videos on this subject. But, why do we have the music? What does it add?
Hello, how did you get this route on the edge 520. Have you produced it in Garmin connect, gpsies or other online program? How did you get the route arrows, autmatically or manual? Thank you for yor help and sorry for my bad english.
Thanks for the video. It seems that the 520 has some of the problems that the 800 had when I was using it, i.e. not recognizing certain turns. Do you know if this issue has been fixed by now? Thanks.
+Alex R The alerts at the top are from the 'Turn Guidance' function - from what i've read the 520 judges where it thinks turns are from the angles in courses and doesnt always appear to get it right. The alerts at the bottom are 'Course Points' and are embedded in the course file we uploaded as a TCX. These are issued when you reach the specific point on your course and seem to be more reliable - albeit they can be a little late (some course mapping tools allow you to set the course point before the junction). The use of course points via a TCX upload is a handy trick we've used time and again on our edge 200, 500 and 510. If you want proper turn by turn navigation then the Edge 1000 is the daddy IMHO and mine hasn't missed a beat.
Might be a dumb question but I just acquired a 520 recently and wanted to try riding a course I created in Garmin Connect. Will I be able to do everything shown in this video by simply syncing the course I created in Garmin Connect or do I need to do something with ridewithgps as well? That's the part that confuses me. I loaded a course onto the device from GC and was going to give it a go this weekend. Now I'm worried that it may not work because I may need to do something additional with ridewithgps.
Hi Marko - its a while since i made this video but looking at the course name it was a route uploaded from Ride With GPS as a TCX file so unfortunately I don't know how it will get along with your route from Garmin. I suspect that some of the functionality showing in the video won't work as I don't think Garmin Connect includes waypoints at junctions whereas this data is included in a route mapped on ride with gps if downloaded as a TCX. You may find that the distance to waypoints and poss turn info may not work as well as it won't have waypoint data. The 520's mapping is not a core inbuilt function but the installation of openstreetmaps etc and use of waypoints is a significant improvement from the breadcrumb trails we used to follow when navigation with the edge 200 / 500. Hope you get it working
So, if I am traveling to the other part of the country far away from home, then all I have to do is, save this map somewhere on the desktop for example and download another map that covers the area I am traveling to for the mean time right, and I can later delete it and reinstall or recopy my previous openstreetmap map?
I have a previously recorded ride on my 520. I went ahead and created a course out it. For some reason I am not getting turn navigation. The setting for turn navigation is on. Any guess what is the issue with the unit?
+Veritas Aequitas the real issue Garmin advertise the 520 as having turn guidance and it does not even comes close in doing that. I have an open case with them. Thankfully they have been willing to work on it since I pointed to them that it says in the manual that it does turn guidance. Their software team is analyzing my data and courses.
Just a simple stupid question : if I start from point C (home) and I want to follow a route downloaded from a friend from Strava, which is from point A to point B and I will finish my cycling day to point D (beer), I will get data from whole C-A-B-D router or only from the route I follow A to B?
Indeed. But if I start recording in the point C, can I follow the route from point A to point B somehow, which is very important, and after that, finish the race in point D? Thank you!
Thanks! Any idea how to get the ridewithgps file on there? If I go and try to import a .tcx file into Connect I get an error message. I may be wrong but don't you need a .tcx for turn by turn?
+SSKElbow Hi, I don't have my 520 to hand but if I recall it's the same process as the Edge 510 - you don't import the ridewithgps TCX to Garmin Connect, you download it to your PC then load it onto your 520. I have a guide for the 510 - velogps.com/garmin-edge-510-course-navigation/ and will update one for the 520 when I get a moment. Some course planning sites allow you to download direct to the device. The 520 has some in built turn by turn navigation but this is not great as it basically tries to judge what is a turn and doesnt always get it right. By embedding coursepoints into a TCX you will get turn notifications when you arrive at these pre-set locations. It takes a little setting up and getting used to but its basically a workaround to get navigation for courses you've uploaded. True turn by turn navigation requires the Edge 1000, 810, 800, touring or Explore. You will need to upload maps to your 520 to get it to display maps as per the video. I'll be putting together a tutorial over the next couple of days. Happy New Year !
Nice countryside! Pity about the navigation flaws. I use my Garmin to download Audax rides that typically have dozens of turns over 200 to 1200 km. Missing occasional turns on long rides is a major bummer, especially because we are usually in unfamiliar territory. To my knowledge neither the Touring or Explore are sold in Australia, or they are keeping it quiet.
I've discovered the reason why some it does not alert some turns. The turn-by-turn directions are all based on the other purple line and not the course line. I don't know why that line is created, but it is often significantly off from the course line that I created in Garmin Connect. The only way to use this to navigate a course is to watch the map, and the turn by turns are usually useless. $300 is a lot of money for something to have such a basic flaw.
+Jim Van Derze To be fair the 520 is billed as a 'competitor' device rather than a navigational device, hence the lack of pre-installed detailed maps and the small screen size. Garmin offer the Edge Touring, 1000 and the new Edge Explore which all have inbuilt mapping and proper turn by turn navigation - they have to have something to differentiate devices. If you look at the video again you'll see that the 'course point distance' data field picks up on all turns and the course point alerts pop up at the bottom of the screen in a black bar (its just the alerts at the top that miss some turns). To get this to happen you need to map your course on a mapping tool/website with the ability to export a TCX with embedded course points for the turns (ridewithgps works well).
+VELOGPS - THE INNER TUBE Thanks, but I'm not willing to let Garmin off the hook that easily. Just because navigation isn't it's primary function, it is a function on the expensive device; and that function does not work. I used Garmin Connect to create the course, and the 520 is not picking up the points that I placed on the route. I'm not sure where the points that are there are coming from. I sent an email to Garmin Support today, and they are supposed to respond to me within "2 to 3 business days". MapMyRide on my phone gives me speed, average speed, distance, split speed, calories, elevation, and map routing. The only thing that I'd like that it does not have is turn-by-turn directions, and it appears that the 520 doesn't either. I'll see what Garmin Support says, but I think a nice phone mount on my bike would be a better investment.
+VELOGPS - THE INNER TUBE Garmin had not found a solution yet, so I did some experimenting and found the problem. I had replaced Garmin's base map with a regional detailed map from www.dcrainmaker.com. I reverted back to the Garmin base map on my device, and the turn-by-turn directions are now working fine. So, the 520 carries a trade-off. You can either have a detailed map from dcrainmaker, or correct turn directions; but not both. I'm opting for the correct turn directions.
+Jim Van Derzee Thanks for the update Jim - will give it a try when it warms up here and see how it works. It's a shame turn by turn doesnt appear to work so well with the detailed maps but the use of coursepoints gets it pretty close as a workaround (detailed map, next direction and countdown). As i'm spoilt for choice I tend to always ride with my edge 1000 - the 520 gets used on the turbo or if i've forgotten to charge the 1000.
+hemiforever From the home screen go to settings, settings, activity profiles, select the profile you wish to adjust (e.g. race), data screens, map. On the map screen options page ensure its enabled, ensure you have 2 data fields then select either field one or two and you can then select a data field category - scroll down to 'Heart Rate' then select whichever heart rate data field you fancy. Hope that helps
+Artur Kaczmarek Out of the 2 i'd choose the 810 with it's bigger screen and as a device that was designed with navigation in mind. The 520 is marketed as a competitor device with lots of data available - navigation as demo'd in the video is a workaround and requires installation of open street maps. Personally for navigation I default to the Edge 1000 every time due to its bigger screen and it hasn't missed a beat yet - although I appreciate its a step up in price.
+VELOGPS - THE INNER TUBE I think you are right. And I never used 520 though. Althought when it comes to 810 and navigating, I'd rather use my phone to get from place to place as a phone can tell you directions (voice direction missing from Garmin). But at he same time you wouldn't have the other options that you get on Garmin. 520 seems to have a bit better screen. When it comes to using map on 520 or 810, most of the time you download your own course therefore the 810 navigation is there for our own comfort.
hi there, Listen i have downloaded route gpx files from strava, and have been able to copy this file into the garmin 520's newfiles folder. From here I can see the file on the gamins 520's courses, but am wondering if at all there is a way to see and manage these files within Garmin Connect? Any ideas? Many thanks indeed! jonny
What happens if you go out of track, cutting let say some km of the preloaded trip that you first had planned?
Super helpful thanks, couldn’t figure out why navigation wasn’t working but still not getting turn by turn 😫
May I know where to get cue card page?
Excellent video, great graphics, very helpful split screen. For me; one of the best videos on this subject. But, why do we have the music? What does it add?

FYI - I did load openstreet maps per DC Rainmaker's instructions.

Yep!
what do you think is best, both have same price 300e bundle, Edge 810 or Edge 520?
I have a previously recorded ride on my 520. I went ahead and created a course out it. For some reason I am not getting turn navigation. The setting for turn navigation is on. Any guess what is the issue with the unit?
It is a .fit file (garmin file format) created from an existing ride

Any update? I have been totally disappointed with my 520 as far as turn by turn goes.
+Lloyd Davies Udates from Garmin. They promised a software update to fix the issue in a near future. I am considering switching to the 1000.
+Veritas Aequitas I started using ride with GPS. Works great.

If you start recording the ride from C and keep on till D it should do the whole lot

How to change data field
Hi, Awesome videos!!!
Do you have access to a Fenix 3 to check the course navigation??
Thanks!!!
+txurrispo Not at the moment - if I can lay my hands on one in the future i'll certainly be checking out any course navigation functionality.
+VELOGPS - THE INNER TUBE Thanks!
HOLA VELOGPS, tengo una consulta que programa utilizas para editar tus vídeos, están excelentes gracias!!! saludos desde COLOMBIA!!!!!

Straight line is not a glitch, because you're not at the start of your waymarked route navigation is the shortest route, a straight line!
Which one do you think is better at mapping 810 or 520?

This was so helpful, thx!
This was very helpful. Many thanks!
thank you for the instructive video
Hi, does 520 have map zoom in/out function?
+beraht You can zoom the map in and out to your location.
Many many thanks !!! Ciao
Very useful, thank you!
This is the perfect info for me, I'm cycling tomorrow and will give this a try.
Thanks for this video mate really helpful. Probably I will buy and upgrade from cateye padrone smart to this unjt. Cheers mate
and how to load a map or a route?
+алексей абашкин I'll be putting together a video tutorial for youtube soon as well as a guide on our website.
Really useful -- thanks.
Not very useful, where is off course?
