I have been using phones rather than Garmins for years. Bought a Garmin edge explore for use when it rains and phone screens die or get confused by surface water. I wanted to be able to transfer a GPX file to the device and follow it. Took me a little while toget my head around it but it is now simple to take a gpx file created with an external app, upload to device and follow. Some good things I di not expect. The app on phone shows a course with distance markers. Very handy for answering those 'are we there yet' questions.. There is a facility to alllow others to follow your track. A useful safety feature. You can lock the touch screen. Something I'd like to be able to do with a phone. Prevents accidental unwanted changes.... Importing maps was easy enough, much the same as older Garmins. Easy to choose which one to use if you upload several. And at present the Explore is price-reduced because there is a new model.
But he doesn't tell you how bad the battery is. Do a bit of research on them before you buy. The battery % drops pretty fast and when it gets to 0% it can still stay on for up to 10 hours. They are so inaccurate it's crazy.
Thank you for a most informative video. I need a navigation computer so I have been considering the explore and you just answered a lot of my questions.
It’s all confusing…. The simple answer is …. The Garmin edge explore series is aimed more for touring and exploration( as the name suggests) and the others are more for performance tracking….
Dude, thanks so much. You made it so clear that this is the bike computer I need. I can confidently buy one I saw in a sale knowing it’s exactly what I need.
I can only echo your positive comments. I have this model and I find it great whilst on holiday. I throw the wife and kids in the car, gently place the Brompton in the boot and spend a lovely couple of hours each morning exploring the local area before the gang wake up.
830 is a great computer just lacking in some of the Nav features. The explore has a slower processor which gets irritating sometimes, but it's a very reliable computer with excellent simplicity.
Had this unit for a year now - works perfectly no issues. I don't use navigation, hardly at all. I go on my 25 mile loop and track heart rate and cadence mainly. It just works. Easy to see, and if you need to save battery, it can be set to turn the screen off. What's really cool is that even with the screen off, as soon as a car starts to come up behind me, the Varia radar (that I have paired) turns the screen on...until the car passes and then the screen turns off again. Very nice.
I ordered a silicone gel case for mine to help keep it safe if I was to drop mine. After seeing your video I ordered it immediately. I bought the out front mount for it as well to put it in front of me and away from my sweaty face. Love my Garmin Edge Explore….Rob K
Among the tons of other fancy yt channels yours opinion and last 3 minutes gave me the most valuable insight about this Garmin. Definitely it is for me and for my bike trips. If it can navigate me to the nearest Trailforks route then this Garmin is for me. Thanks a lot!
Thanks! I mostly just want a digital map so I don't get lost in new cities. That point of interest thing is cool. My phone is super laggy and inaccurate at times.
Looking to replace my tired old Edge Touring and have been confused with the technical jargon, you have helped me realise that I just need a new Edge explore
Brian, it was a terrific review. I think you covered everything very well. I like your clear, honest way of dicsussing things. It's amazing to me how some people like to complain, sometimes in the rudest ways they can. Ignore the flak and keep being you. Good job!
I own a Garmin Edge Explore. I particularly love its bright, tactile screen. Navigation features need no further comment. I do miss a couple features that lack: 1) barometric altimeter 2) Glonass and/or Galileo support. Whenever I'm climbing a mountain I miss knowing the GRADIENT of the current slope. I miss it so badly.
Long time touring cyclist and I've always used paper maps and a basic bicycle computer. I'm contemplating the electronic upgrade and kind of torn. I already have the Garmin InReach Mini 2 which tethers to my phone (via Garmin Explore). This works just fine, but I'm trying to understand the advantage(s) of going with the dedicated device for navigation. Generally, I don't use my phone for much other than texting and calls while touring. I also carry a single battery back up that so I can recharge as necessary.
Yes! Your garmin had caught my eye while watching your video's & I've waited patiently for a video about it. Happy day, thank you! I'm just back from a road trip where the phone network was very limited, non-existent in places & my navigation was severely affected. Good advice, get a garmin.
Thank you for this video. I am getting back into touring after many years off so the new equipment is very confusing. I am much too old to care anything about “performance” but I want excellent mapping and tracking.
Thank you for the informative video I am happy to see that I chose the right model I was looking for something that was a good price and focused on the maps. I purchased it and then watched your video it was good to see someone talk about the model and confirm the features thanks a lot
You can use goole maps to navigate without cell connection and use your bike battery or an external battery to keep it charged. As for the precision some phone can use Glonass or other positioning system like wifi SSID, ... when you are in a city.
I currently use a Magellan Cyclo505HC. Love its ease of use for maps, but hate the fact I have to plug it into my computer to transfer data. They have not updated software in years, so started looking for something else. Friends suggested this one.. You just confirmed it. Ordering mine next week.
The only drawback with the Edge Explore is it won’t connect to a power meter but I won’t be using a power meter any time soon. I’m not a pro cyclist so I’ve no worries on that score. I’ve also found that it syncs to Strava pretty easily, telling me how hard a climb was etc, plus a lot of other information besides.
Great and honest video and different than the others. I slightly have to disagree with the phone vs Garmin edge part. I usually don't plan the route ahead so just roam on the map and occasionally just point on a destination. For this, the phone does a better job. I use LocusMap (Android only). On the Edge Explore I lack the route coloring features. I hate that you have to type in the whole address in order to navigate. It's not enough to just enter a road name. I don't want to ruin the show, don't get me wrong. This is the best bike trip/navigation computer I am just in the middle of a huge hesitation if I need this over my phone nav.
They also include a lanyard in the box, I haven't received mine yet (explore 2) but I was thinking maybe hold it by the lanyard as I unscrew it from the mount. Also a silicone case is a good idea 👍
Hi Brian ... Excellent explanation of the device... I just received mine today and I don't want to sync it to my phone ...Will it work if I don't download the garmin app.. ?
Reasons given for picking the Explore still apply to the new Explore 2 which I just bought. I really wanted the new 840 but just have no use for all the training and performance features and the larger Explore 2 also works better for my diminishing eyesight. Plus, with the new 2 you can hook up power meter and other sensors. I'm really surprised more people don't go with the Explore, it would probably satisfy the needs of the majority of cyclists.
Just bought a Mio cyclo 210 and first day of use its frozen and I cant do anything with it, so I was interested in a cycling gps with similar functions so I found this video very useful, so I'm sending the Mio back and getting the Garmin Edge Explore... thanks
Thanks for the video upload do you still recommend this computer or is there one that you would recommend for bicycle travel I need it to have maps thanks
Well I don’t think that this computer is offered anymore…. There is a newer model that is 100 dollars more. 300 total. I’d say it’s still the best computer for bicycle travel- smart phone is second😊
This video was exactly what I needed to help me decide. Thank you. I'll take another close look at the 530, but will likely go with the Explore because I really just need a good navigation device. 🚴🏿♂️
Have you used a Garmin charge pack with this? I see the charge back looks to have 4 little electrical dots that this would have to connect to, but I don’t see how it would. On the Garmin website it says their compatible. My battery life is down to 3 hours of riding if I’m lucky. Have you replaced a battery on one of these?
I was drawn to this device by your video. Can you please tell me if this device displays exercise parameters such as VO2max ? Thank you so much. Best Regarđ.
I live in Malta and i visits the Garmin shop and still they have it there and the seller suggested it to me . I was looking on for a big screens . Question does this thing route me via bike-friendly routes such as on bike lanes and through parks, as I live in NYC and google routes me through these.
I’ve been told it does find the most bike friendly routes, but I’m not sure. I do know that it interfaces with other apps like Moovit which do find the most bike friendly routes.
YES, I have one and it does route you onto safer and quieter roads, bike lanes, and trails (through parks) in NYC. I also tried the 1040, the Garmin Edge Explorer 2 routes you very differently from the 1040. Basically, the 1040 does not give a damn about you and it will route you onto busy streets, the Garmin Edge Explore 2 will not do this, if there are no bike lanes it will route you onto quiet streets. I thought the 1040 would route me just like the Explore 2 and it does not, that's why I will be sending the 1040 back and I will be staying with the explorer 2. Explorer 2 emphasizes staying away from busy roads and keeping you on bike lanes. For example. I'm in NYC, I instructed both devices to bring me to grand army plaza. The Explorer 2 brought me there via 2nd ave bike lane, then the 55th street bike lane, and then the 6th ave bike lane, and this is coming off the 59th street bridge. The 1040, did not care about me and it routed me onto 5th AVE there are no bike lanes on 5th AVE. Also, the explorer is superior with recalculating routes, if you go off course in NYC, it will recalculate based on what you're doing. The 1040 will make you turn the hell around and insist that you follow whats on the screen. One time I cut through forest park, and the explorer knew where one particular trail was and that eventually it would connect to an intersection I needed to go through, so it routed me through the park, the 1040 on the other hand did not. Right in front of the trail the 1040 wanted me to make a U-turn and head back onto woodhaven BLVD which is SUPER busy, 2 lanes and a bus lane in each direction. The Garmin Edge Explorer 2 is a solid navigation computer and is superior to the more expensive models when it comes to navigation (friendlier routing), the 1040 is superior in the sense that the routing is more accurate; when you arrive at your finish point you’ll be within 3 feet from the finish point, so better in the sense of accuracy.
Hi , great video, just what I need. However,I have an older smartphone and can't download the Garmin App. Does that mean I won't be able to use the Edge Explore?
I have an Edge 130 & 530. The Explore sounds great… but no power meter support means not for me; I also don’t like touch screens: I ride in hot, humid environments - Touch-screens don’t work very well.
I am looking for a touring computer and have had an edge 810 forever. I think this is a better option to upgrade to. But I didn’t see cadence sensors, did it not come with them??
Thank you for a normal review for normal cyclists. Excellent
You’re welcome.. thanks for watching.😀

This is one of the best reviews I have seen about this device. It confirmed that this is the computer I need for my tours! Amazing videos keep it up!
But he doesn't tell you how bad the battery is. Do a bit of research on them before you buy. The battery % drops pretty fast and when it gets to 0% it can still stay on for up to 10 hours. They are so inaccurate it's crazy.
Thanks Brian for your review and advice. I just bought an Edge Explore, the mount, and rubber bumper.
Thank you for a most informative video. I need a navigation computer so I have been considering the explore and you just answered a lot of my questions.
I liked this. I’m lost with nav computers - still not so sure but this helped. I’ll subscribe

830 is a great computer just lacking in some of the Nav features. The explore has a slower processor which gets irritating sometimes, but it's a very reliable computer with excellent simplicity.

I couldn't tour without a Garman, it's a life saver...
I love how he cares about our pockets that's insane! ❤
Great video bro, thanks for doing it!
You’re welcome, thanks for watching.
Thank you for a cracking ( very good ) video. All killer no filler.
Thank you, I appreciate that.
Thank you! Needed this..!
Thanks. I just purchased the Edge Explore 2. All I'm concerned with the navigation and the music widget :)
This is the very one I need. The map features, same as you, I am not a power biker ... lol. Very informative here. Thanks.
Thank
you for this I am looking to buy my first cycling navigation device. This video was great, informative, clear and honest.
Clearly explains the uses over the other models which still confuses me. Bought the explore because of the review. Keep it up👍
I plan on buying the Explore too because I mainly need maps riding around the city. Is the installed map North America which would include Mexico too?
I own a Garmin Edge Explore. I particularly love its bright, tactile screen. Navigation features need no further comment. If its steep and you have to get off and push your loaded bike it must be 15% + 🤣
Now Garmin Edge Explore 2 with barometric altimeter and Galileo
great great video ! would you recommand to stay with the Edge Explore or the Edge Explore 2 ? thanks
Quad Lock has a garmin arm mount that has space for a gopro mount underneath so you can mount a light/gopro.

It was a super helpful video! I was not sure about which bike computer to choose and you did a wonderful job of explaining the important stuff.
Your video is exactly what I was looking for. Well done.
thanks for honest overview. I guess I'll stick with my iphone for navigation. Again thank you.
Liked your pithy down to earthy commentary, struck a chord with me,
Thanks. Can always rely on you for accurate information
Thank you for this video. I am getting back into touring after many years off so the new equipment is very confusing. I am much too old to care anything about “performance” but I want excellent mapping and tracking.

I still use it to this day. I hope they come up with an updated model.
Thanks for review, I'm looking for a good touring one with long battery life, so the Edge may be the ticket
Wondering if going to do review relatively new Garmin Edge Explorer 2? Just wondering about your thoughts!
Used one on this last tour. I will share my thoughts soon😁👍
Great video Brian....Learned a lot about the Garmin Edge Explore. Thanks so much.
Great video Brian !!!! I know I was one of those asking you about it. I got it and I love it.

This vs google maps on the phone? Purely asking about navigation. I know this will save phone battery etc.

Thank you Brian! I trust in you reviews.
What a great review, funny, entertaining and very informative. How about another one showing how it works on the bike while travelling?
Extremely helpful video thank you 👌🏻
great video bryan!!
Thank you so much for this video
You are so welcome!

Do you know how should I do to see the rear gear on screen? The function is built in but I don't know how to make it work. Thanks!
Just what I was looking for I have sub thanks for the realistic review looks like a great device well worth a look.
I think you did a fabulous job
Just bought a Mio cyclo 210 and first day of use its frozen and I cant do anything with it, so I was interested in a cycling gps with similar functions so I found this video very useful, so I'm sending the Mio back and getting the Garmin Edge Explore... thanks
Up to your usual excellent standards. Can you do one on bike lights and action cameras please. Thanks.
I just got one. Hows the battery life.
You helped make my mind up so thanks.

Can you connect headphones to this garmen for audio directions?
Thanks for this excellent video! Is it worth the extra expense for the Explore 2?
Does the out front mount interfere with the fold?
Thank you for sharing experience. Was looking for one. Very helpful
Thanks for all the info.
This video was exactly what I needed to help me decide. Thank you. I'll take another close look at the 530, but will likely go with the Explore because I really just need a good navigation device. 🚴🏿♂️

Which is the best edge explorer or
edge 530?
Fantastic review. Thank you.
ok just in case you not aware there are offline navigation on phone, magic earth , komoot, here we go and such
Thanks for the review man
What is the name of the handlebar addon that you suggested?
It’s called a Garmin out front mount. There are other manufacturers on Amazon that make pretty much the same thing for cheaper.
Great video Brian. I have two Garmins. ! England 🏴
Totallly agree about the pic on the box. But vs eg Karoo or Wahoo Element Bolt or Roam or Lezyne ranges ?
Thanks for this review and experience shared
Thanks! ❤️
Thank you for watching.
I was drawn to this device by your video.
Can you please tell me if this device displays exercise parameters such as VO2max ?
Thank you so much.
Best Regarđ.
Fantastic heads up on the Edge Explore , defo sold it for me . Thanks. 🙏🏿
I have two, and thus far it's been my favorite.
Thank you Very clear information.
Cool video, thanks. What mount are you using then?
Clear vid! Purchased Cos of this vis. U should get discount
Thanks for this video! Very helpful for me!!!! 👍😊
Thanks for your sharing . Does this take radar as well ?
Yes, but I think they finally discontinued this model just recently.
I live in Malta and i visits the Garmin shop and still they have it there and the seller suggested it to me . I was looking on for a big screens . The only one is the 1030 plus but it is very expensive . I am not a pro cyclist specially at my age i just enjoy doing some exercise . I am using the iphone but i noticed is not perfect where it comes to distance and speed . Thanks
Great review! Can Garmin Explore work with the Naviki navigation app?!
Works Great !
Only comment I have to say all GPS are satellite linked. Maps are usually streamed on cell phone GPS but you can download them for when you don't have service and still use the GPS.
Do u must connect the navigation to the phone? Or does it work without it too?
Works as a stand alone. They don’t sell this model anymore they have updated it and it cost more -of course.🫤
@@ibikeunfolded Thanks for answer, i might end up buying the newer version. But in my country is the 1st generation still available.
Does it perform on bike trails?

I actually have the 520 +. And it’s works well with navigation.
Hi , great video, just what I need. However,I have an older smartphone and can't download the Garmin App. Does that mean I won't be able to use the Edge Explore?
I have an Edge 130 & 530. The Explore sounds great…
but no power meter support means not for me;
I also don’t like touch screens: I ride in hot, humid environments -
Touch-screens don’t work very well.
I am looking for a touring computer and have had an edge 810 forever. I think this is a better option to upgrade to. But I didn’t see cadence sensors, did it not come with them??
No. Sensors are separate. This unit is more of a budget option.
