Great video! Even 6 years later, this is the most complete step-by-step I've seen. The in-action shots on the bike make me want to try it out now. Thanks!
Very well documented video. We're now 8 years after the video but it seems Garmin still has not enabled Live Segments to show up by default along a predefined route. You still need to go in an star the segments on Strava first 😞.
Do you know any way to avoid that the map is zoomed out when a segment starts? In trailriding it's hopeless to follow a segment (unless you know where it's going) when the map zoomed all the way out to show the entire segment on the small screen.
Congratulations on your new Edge 520! ;) Actually find this 'live segments' a bit useless, since I don't want to see only time behind/ ahead, but I want to see heart rate as well and speed. So you have to switch screen after segment starts, which is pretty inconvenient.
+Clint Gibbs thank you for your answer. do i understand it right i can make a overview page where I visualize my power, heartrate, time behind the KOM, distance left of the segment ...
Thanks for making this vid. Do you know of there is anyway of setting it so it automatically shows the KOM? I find it annoying having to quick change it on the approach to each segment.
Great video. Have Garmin corrected or added live segments to a map you’ve created on Garmin connect yet ? Or do I have to manually scroll through the map looking for segments ? Thanks
Hi Clint, on my Garmin dashboard I don't see the same toolbar on the left that I see on this video and others. I don't see the "two arrow" sync icon at all, whether or not the menu is expanded. Any idea why?
Clint, you are correct. You can change it to KOM but to do so you have to go into each individual segment and manually change it. I just received my edge520 the other day and after a few rides there are some observations I have made that I think others would find useful in regards to strava live segments. Feel free to add them to your video and or description. 1. Live segment position is based on your current speed vs the average speed. This causes for terribly misleading and or inaccurate readings. If you are climbing a hill the Garmin device will report you as being well behind the PR/KOM. Alternatively, if you are going down a hill it will say you are likely ahead of the PR/KOM. This issue occurs on ALL GPS units. The live segments are only somewhat accurate on steady, relatively flat or gradual grade segments. 2. Garmin devices can only handle 1 segment at a time. If you have 2 segments starred and one lies within a segment it will only show you the information for the segment you come to first. Upon completing the first segment it will not begin to show you the next segment. 3. Live segments does not work well with mtn biking. You will often get an "off segment" message. The segment will still be recorded to strava upon upload but you wont be able to see your progress during the ride once you are "off segment". 4. Strava segment leader boards will not automatically update on your Garmin device. For instance, you can get a new PR/KOM, upload your ride to strava, sync your Garmin device, and still have old leader board data on your Garmin. This is extremely annoying as PR's/KOM's are likely to change frequently. In order to get updated leader board information on your Garmin you need to unstar and restar segments. This will force a sync with strava and update the leader board times on the garmin device. 5. The only useful live segments feature i have found with the garmin devices is for alerting you when you are nearing a segment, on a segment, and have finished a segment (assuming it hasnt thought you are "off segment"). The majority of my riding focus is mtn biking but points 1 & 2 are relevant for road riding as well. One thing to keep in mind also about the live segments is that your garmin will list the ones nearest you. If you want to update leader boards, enable, or disable segments you can easily see which ones are near you before your ride. Go into strava on your phone and do whats needed to update the times and or star/un star new/old segments.
Great comment John. I'm using for the first times my new 520 and it's incredibly annoying for it to show me "off segment" even on segments that run on the street and I haven't drifted away from them
hi. I loaded a course from garmin connect (not strava) and i edited few segments there. when i ride this course it doesnt show me the segments. (i enabled them all- i see the green path on the map but no "go" or timer related to the segment) when i ride without a course i see the segments. is it ok ?
Clint.. I did your recommendations and clicked all the boxes you said for live segments. Now I've lost the +/- from KOM I used to use to help win KOMs... so I see KOM on top as a figure but no real time +/- can you tell me how to enable that feature please?. Thank you Michael
Someone has probably asked already but on the Garmin 520 the only options to race against your PR, the KOM and the person above you in the leaderboard in the virtual partner. What if you wanted to race against your last ride or your best time for the month?
+Mike McCray I think you may be able to go online on a computer and change goals for segments. If I have time today I'll check that out and let you know. If you get to it first let me know.
When I look on my device (820) I see a ton of segments I did not star , and places I have never been. Any thoughts on why? I cannot have just my starred segments showing.
Hi, thanks for the video, very useful. Do you know if there is a maximum number of Strava segments you can download to your Garmin device ? I have around 400 starred segs in Garmin but only around 100 of them end up on my Garmin Edge 1030. Thanks !
I'm using 10 data fields on my Edge 1000. Is there a way to setup one of the fields to show time behind or ahead? One reason I do not use this feature is because I can't stand when the screen switches to the map showing the distance to go and time behind/ahead. When I'm trying to beat a segment, I'm already quite familiar with it and I'd rather see my speed, cadence, and heart rate rather than the map.
Clint. I have a garmin (1000) head unit. Is it possible to up load a segment or ride that someone else posted to strava have my garmin navigate that route AND have my garmin also track my stats ( power, heart rate, speed etc) at the same time? On different screens of course
Clint Gibbs. Thanks for responding Clint but I was referring specifically to riding an entire course that someone has ridden. so as an example if I wanted to ride your latest 70 Mile gravel ride and at the same time be able to have my Garmin computer collect my data for your gravel ride as I ride. How would that be done?
The only way I know it doing that is if someone shares the TCX file with you. In other words they create it in something like a Ride with GPS and then personally share the file with you to import into your Garmin. I'll do some research and see if there's any other way but that's what I know for now.
I have uploaded all the segments in the my local area onto my Garmin edge1000 however they don't all pop up as I'm riding for some reason.. They are all enabled..,do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
+Clint Gibbs I'm not navigating any route and they are Strava live segments are all starred?.. I did a 23 mile route with probably 16 segments in it, just three of the segments showed up during the ride the rest didn't? All routes were loaded on the Garmin and all routes are enabled. Not sure what else I need to do?
If all the segments show up on your Garmin and they are all enabled then I am at a loss to know why they wouldn't show up if you are not navigating a route. You may want to try calling Garmin and see if they have any tips. Let me know what you find out. BTW, I assume you are a Strava premium member?
+MrDominic152 Are there multiple segments within a longer segment? If you have one long segment with several smaller ones in that same route, you'll only get whichever one you came across first.
Yes, I think you have to have premium (which will soon be called Strava Summit) for live segments, but it's been awhile since I've look into that. Someone else chime in.
Any one know how many segments can be loaded on to the 520 Edge? - I've just ordered one and currently doing my segment favorites and open street map preparations etc
Hello, seems you know a lot about strava and wondering if I could get some help using the segments. So I was using a wahoo elemt bolt I got so frustrated because I couldn't get the segments to show up so I ended selling it and I'm about to get a garmin 530 anyways one thing that I notices in your video is the little stars you hit to start segments is something I didint see when I went to look at a segment and I do have strava summit , why is it that I'm not able to see a star when I look at segments?. Because I did connect my computer to strava , I did connect to WiFi,. Something that was working was the automatic uploads of my rides to strava but I'm am lost on how to use the segments.
All I really do is go in and star a segment, either on my phone or on the computer, and then as I'm riding it will show up on my Garmin. This of course assumes that I've linked Garmin to Strava.
I’m so sick of my Garmin 540…I can’t believe how difficult and stupid it is. The only thing I want to figure out, but can’t no matter what I do, is how to see how I performed on a segment while my ride is still active. How do I finish a segment, pull over later while the ride is still active, and see how I performed on an earlier segment? I’ve done it one time before on this 540 so I know it’s possible. Immediately after a huge effort I don’t always have time or ability to look down at my computer and see what’s going on.
Man am I having a bad experience with this Garmin. If ANYONE can offer some id appreciate it. Wahoo TICKR will connect but only sometimes and only for a few seconds. What's going on? Also, I can't get live segments. In the video where he shows to download Garmin express and link your device, my device doesn't show up even though it is connected to my laptop, and it won't show up on my device list for my Garmin Connect account.
I don't know if you sorted out the issue with your device not showing up, but if it is an usb connection it could be that the cable is charge only. I had this issue and it drove me crazy, at the end I swapped the usb cable and it worked. Some apparently only have charging ports
Ive been making 47 seconds (lap time) but once I sync the data from Garmin Edge to Strava it marks 50 seconds. Its been a pain in the ass because no matter if I do 46, 47 or 48 seconds, Strava keeps posting 50 seconds. Does anybody has a similar problem? Can I fix it?
That happened because Strava and Garmin have different algorithm for time. The time you see in your Garmin is preliminarily. Strava give you the final time.
+Clint Gibbs my bad! I finally got it working. although I couldn't from my computer! my phone enabled it. then I downloaded it from my computer to the device. weird!
Great video! Even 6 years later, this is the most complete step-by-step I've seen. The in-action shots on the bike make me want to try it out now. Thanks!
Yeah, true!
Excellent video, still relevant 7 years later, good job, helped me out a lot
I struggled for two hours to get this working. You video got the job done in 15 minutes. Thank you!!!!!
Theres the answer i was looking for.. I always follow a course and wondered why the live segments weren't activating. Now I know 👍🏻
Could not get this working until I saw your video. Thank you
Cheers, the last part answered my frustration at not getting live segments whilst navigating a course! Thanks
great video, very helpful, explains why i could get live segments to work while i was using a pre-planned route. Thanks again
Thanks for such a thorough and clear walkthrough! Just as good as your other reviews and material online. Keep up the good work:-)
That was a very helpful video. Surprised you stayed upright filming and riding simultaneously.
That was so clarifying!. Thanks Sr!
Very well documented video. We're now 8 years after the video but it seems Garmin still has not enabled Live Segments to show up by default along a predefined route. You still need to go in an star the segments on Strava first 😞.
I just got my edge 520 and this was a great help thank you so much.

Thanks for the help with setup. Well explained and concise.
Congratulations on your new Edge 520! ;)
Actually find this 'live segments' a bit useless, since I don't want to see only time behind/ ahead, but I want to see heart rate as well and speed.
So you have to switch screen after segment starts, which is pretty inconvenient.
+Sergey Kessel I don't use power or heart rate when I'm racing so I guess it's good practice ;)
+Clint Gibbs is it not possible to select the segment information in your multidatasheet page?
Yes you can, but if you want to see the live segment page while you are doing the segment you cannot I see your power or HR
Strava premium just got an update for that. look it up
where exactly can I find this setting?
Stefan Van Steenberge if you have a garmin its under workouts or settings
Great video. Have Garmin corrected or added live segments to a map you’ve created on Garmin connect yet ? Or do I have to manually scroll through the map looking for segments ? Thanks
Hi Clint, on my Garmin dashboard I don't see the same toolbar on the left that I see on this video and others. I don't see the "two arrow" sync icon at all, whether or not the menu is expanded. Any idea why?
explained perfecly thks
Clint, by default are the segments set to PR or KOM? It looked like you had to set the goal to KOM.
+John Burmeister pretty sure of the default setting is PR.
Clint, you are correct. You can change it to KOM but to do so you have to go into each individual segment and manually change it. Thanks. Great post. I've pretty much found out the same things. The most annoying thing is getting you off segment on a mountain bike trail.
Great comment John. I'm using for the first times my new 520 and it's incredibly annoying for it to show me "off segment" even on segments that run on the street and I haven't drifted away from them

Clint Gibbs Hi Clint what was the outcome? Many thanks
Clint please do a video on the cyclocross bike doping from over the weekend. Would love to hear your take
When I look on my device (820) I see a ton of segments I did not star , and places I have never been. Any thoughts on why? I cannot have just my starred segments showing.
hello clint, garmin edge 1000 device also how to fix kom -Qkom does not appear in the current pr :/
Tkx for the great video!!!
Great video!
very helpful
Does work on edge 130?
Yes
Nice job Clint. Thank you
Another great video! Thanks!
Hi, thanks for the video, very useful. Do you know if there is a maximum number of Strava segments you can download to your Garmin device ? I have around 400 starred segs in Garmin but only around 100 of them end up on my Garmin Edge 1030. Thanks !
+Nick Hickton I honestly don't know if they limit the number of segments
Up to 100. According with Strava.com
Is there a cycling computer you would recommend that does NOT have GPS? Just a wireless bike computer for tracking miles, speed, and other features.
+creativeone247 I've had good success in the past with computers from Cateye. Probably the brand I would recommend.
I'm using 10 data fields on my Edge 1000. Is there a way to setup one of the fields to show time behind or ahead? When I'm trying to beat a segment, I'm already quite familiar with it and I'd rather see my speed, cadence, and heart rate rather than the map.
+Francis Faustino i have briefly looked into trying to put other data fields on that screen and I have not found a way to do so.
Hi Clint - do you know where the training option is on the 820 - cannot find for looking!!
+Daniel Young sorry, I've actually never used an 820
+Daniel Young sorry, I've actually never used an 820
Thanks for replying. Excellent video I had meant to say :)
+Clint Gibbs - worked out the 820 comes in two variants, the 'straight' 820 and the Explore - you cannot use Live Segments on the Explore model.
Interesting. Thanks.
So while a live segment is displayed there's no way to see your cadence, power, speed etc..?
+Edin Brothers not on the live segments screen. You can switch over to another screen that shows that other information.
Clint Gibbs yes you can. You have to change your display too what you want to see while in a segment
Clint. I have a garmin (1000) head unit. Is it possible to up load a segment or ride that someone else posted to strava have my garmin navigate that route AND have my garmin also track my stats ( power, heart rate, speed etc) at the same time? On different screens of course
+lawor8 if you star any segment it will come up on your Garmin when you're on that segment. I believe that's what you're asking?

excellent explanation!
Thanks this is so helpful
so u can't set a goal for downhill...but will it show on Garmin if you star it ?
I believe that is correct. I've never set a goal for a downhill segment.
I have uploaded all the segments in the my local area onto my Garmin edge1000 however they don't all pop up as I'm riding for some reason.. They are all enabled..,do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

Up to 100. Strava will add in 20 to 30 local segments unless you take up the 100 with your own starred segments.
Amazing! Thank you so much!
