While not cheap(?) my biggest useful hobby product is a set (actually, two) of 1-2-3 Blocks or 'Machinists' blocks. They're heavy metal blocks which measure 1"x2"x3" and are used for aligning shop tools and machines. They're heavy and insanely useful for hobbying, particularly terrain building. Quickly able to measure 1", 2" or 3"...excellent for weighing down stuff or pinning stuff between them while drying (as they have 'perfect' 90-degree sides), etc. Want to make a ladder or walkway? Align your outside rods/dowels on the 1" width and done...want to measure each floor of a building to be identical...use the 3" side...etc. Want to glue some MDF together and ensure it's 90-degrees and straight, while drying? Use the blocks. You will find yourself using them constantly if you build a lot of terrain.

The old Warmachine/Hordes blister packs used to come with little sponge backing pads to keep the model from rattling around too much. I turned a couple of those into pincushions for my own hobby setup. It's one of those things I haven't thought about on my desk, but it sure puts in work for me.

Instead of a pin cushion I use a little magnetic pin cushion that can store a couple paper clips an old x-acto blade as well as a few pins. Thank you for sharing the cable management nest that gives me some new ideas. I also think I'm going to return to using mugs for my brushes. I tried fancier devices but truthfully, I hate them. They take up too much space and don't hold enough paint brushes.

I use a paper piercer for my bottle unclogging needs. Has a handle like an x-acto, so i don't have to worry about keeping track of it like pins. And for pinning I use jewelry pins; they're around a dollar for a bag at the craft store, but they're uniformly sized and straight, unlike paper clips. No fuss model pinning.

    I loved this video!
For me, my favorite little hobby gadget I have *is* actually the little sectioned out plastic Jewlery boxes.
I have a situation where I only get scraps of time, and my little hobby workshop needs to be easy to take down and put back up again.
So when building minis I like to part them out, and put each mini's bits in a section of the box. Makes it really easy to get back into what I was doing when my 20 Ork Boyz's parts are nice and organized into their own separate sections!

Canadian here I love using Pill bottles the yellowy green ones with the indented lids, they make great painting handles come in all sizes some bases even fit so well they don't need any blue tack to stay but even if they are not a perfect fit a little tack and your good add some weight if your worried about them tipping and they come in so many sizes they fit so many different bases and also the sized make them easier to hold in your hand . Also I recently found those little condiment cups and tried them out and have been loving them, one of the first uses I had for one was to pour in some snow basing material and add a little pink paint and then just started stirring and stirring and made my own cherry blossom flock with it and just keep that in the cup and it is great.

For the Superglue Bottles getting stuck closed, here's a tip:
Leave the Bottle standing around open for about 10-20 minutes before closing it.
The Bottle's own lid has a bit of a "spike" on the inside at the top that opens up the then dried up residue of superglue.

In place of a pin cushion filled with pins, I suggest a single paper clip. Just unbend one piece by 45 degrees so that it's easy to insert into a paint container and you're good to go. It's big enough to see on your desktop but small enough to never be in the way and you'll never hurt yourself stepping on it.

Sounds like the bigger tip here is organizing, and having everything with in arms reach. I glad you found a system that works for you. I bought a bunch of the hobby zone modular workshop stuff. The modules in that are about 6x6x 12 inches and they have magnets so you can snap fit them together. I got draws for bits, tool holders and chubby for sanding sticks, even a display self with plexi covering. It was not cheap and does not store every thing I need it was a worth while investment.

Lighter, for cleaning my glue needle, when a normal needle won't clear it.
A little bit of fire and it's clear.
A candle for stretching out sprue's to long tin wires, cut off the thickness you need and...
Yes, plastic wires, that's what you then get, perfect for thin details.

I use Bottle corks, snipped paper clips and hot glue as small cheap paint handles for squads of minis, I like to paint all my marines in sub assemblies, so I use like 5 corks per model, I don't like using shades, washes etc. so I manually paint all my shadows and highlights, buying a bag of like 1kg worth of bottle corks is perfect compared to using $60+ hobby paint handles, also easy to remove hot glue from the model once done and doesn't leave putty all of the model where it's been stuck

    My 3 tips.
    1. Nail clippers that look like pliers. They have a long, curved, pointy tip which is perfect for cutting bits of a sprew or cleaning up the nibs and flash.
    2. T-7000 (black) or CP-0001 (transparent) glue. It's advertised as shoe glue but they also use it to glue a screen to a mobile phone. It's rubbery so models are more bump resistant. It's sticky but has a long drying time so you can position several bits at the same time. It doesn't melt plastic so you can twist off a bit and try again without breaking it.
    3. A studio light that hangs over the desk. It's obvious but I never see it mentioned.

So, I hung it from the bottom of the desk in a cheap mesh bag and it can els out nearly all the noise from vibration. Plus keeps all the cables away from the floor. 50 cents hobby hack. Also I wash my minis in sandwich ziploc baggies of IPA now and plop them in the ultrasonic which is now full of water and the difference in price and mess is incredible.

If you need any motivation to get all the bits off the sprues, try making sprue bricks. I had a lot of sprue laying around and an old 3rd edition Lictor, and I wanted him to be camoflaging. So I trimmed all the sprues down to about the same size, and built a wall out of sprue bricks at about chest height for my Lictor, with some even smaller sprue chunks laid next to the wall like destroyed wall chunks. I cleared up some space in my buckets, and I made most of my lictor's paint scheme a very simple grey.

pins/sewing needles are also good for antennas, narrow enough to look too scale, hard enough not to bend if someone knocks the mini over
not sure how often it would apply to 40k, but i use it a lot on battletech minis, for both antennas and machinegun barrels
tho you do need some quality clippers/snips to cut them, my old cheap hobby clippers are full of dents because of them

Spray tin lids. They double up as little pots to hold small things and if you turn them upside down and stick some tape on them they can become a painting handle for larger models 😁

Bitz organizing sounds like a great video idea and will help you knock it out. I use a tackle box and a little compartmented storage box from Walmart and I feel like I'm still unorganized.

Do you use normal or distilled/cleaned water?
As for small disposable storage space I like to use the plastic inlays of e.g. cookie or other (mostly) sweets/candy boxes.
Those are plastic, often water proof (but beware, sometimes there are holes), transparent and have often various sizes for different tasks like an additional water dish to clean same color brushes or mix gooey stuff or simply temporary store small stuff.
And regarding the net for your hairdryer - ever thought about a small cabinet on wheels for under your desk?

Playing cards work great as shims too. Not too useful for minis, but if you need to make microadjustments in some piece of furniture (like a pool table) to get it level, playing cards are your friend.

Knitting lights and glasses. Spent I think $40 US combined on a flexible light that goes around my neck and a headlamp with multiple magnifications. Buying those with a 'hobby' or 'painters' label would have been x2 or x3 that price.

    Good Ideas!
Instead of straight pins I use A coil of soldering wire
Usually getting up and changing my water is a good way to stretch my legs and back. But then you paint waaaay more than I do, so your but is tough than mine!
I keep a roll of wax paper instead of using playing cards. I don't do any resin work however, so I don't know how well wax paper would work for that
How do you keep all those cups organized so you don't lose anything?
