Censoring an 18+ rated game is fucking stupid.
It's stupid regardless of the age rating.
Seen it on e-shop and no way I'm buying it now with this kinda censorship, especially along with the extreme asking price :-)
I thought Zero and A only ratings were banned in consoles.
Those Japanese boomers don't care about such. They don't demand abolishing censorship, thus their government won't lift a finger.

It's because we tolerated it for too long worldwide. Rating systems are broken and consoles are a large part of the problem.
@@BuetifullPersun no. They need to be implemented properly. They shouldn't be allowed to refuse rating something, demand censorship, or push it. They should exist only to make sure parents don't buy adult content to their children. But they can't even do that properly considering how many children play GTA and COD.

It's funny how an anime like Gushing Over Magic Girls can have mostly uncensored topless nudity with visible nipples, but a video game like Valis can't have the same luxury. I don't know why CERO treats video games like they're broadcast TV shows. They should be treated like Home Media releases like Blu-Ray/VoD anime.

Uncensored version is on cable. The regular TV release is censored. Still, I agree nudity should be fine in home console releases as long as it's rated properly. Too bad this probably won't get a PC release...
It's permitted on Z rated console games. PC games can be sold without a rating. The real problem is developers wanting to get the rating below Z, to bring in more customers. Kinda like in the US when devs will censor a game to try to get it below an M rating, even though M ratings are permitted on consoles. Likewise Z rated games are allowed on Japanese consoles, but it cuts down the potential customers, so developers try to get the rating below Z.
Yeah, Z rated games are highly limited in sales, being pushed to an "adults only" section. Also, I don't know if first party would allow for outright sexual content even if the game had a CERO Z (otherwise you would see eroge ports almost untouched haha).
@@Videogamer-555 It is not permitted for Z rated games. Every single Z rated game has censored this type of content, such as Baldur's Gate 3, which the channel recently covered.

If they censored that I don't even see how this series can go on. This is probably the last collection of the franchise they will bring to the US.
M rated games in the US can show female nipples. Z (and possibly D) rated games in Japan can show nipples.
Well, yes because there's extremely few versions of Valis left. The remaining versions are just particular PC versions that would be tough to emulate.
Outside of Valis X, there's really not much to release. And I sincerely doubt they would release Valus X LOL

I'm flabagasted someone was so lazy with the censoring. You could have coloured the area flesh coloured or added some tattered garb. Media is full of unique censors for implied nudity. Heck, a black line would have sufficed. This is deplorable. Never mind whether or not it should be censored. 😠

A shame. Pixel art like those on the PC88/98 are beautiful works of art. I love the visual presentation of the PC98 version of Policenauts.
I remember magazines had articles covering the huge hurdle of releasing games worldwide. Snatcher, Policenauts and so many more were a gamble. Even back then.
Kojima and other legendary directors did not want the game out, if players could not enjoy it. That includes censorship
Only issue with Valis, the last thing that was released, I believe was an H-game. More of a visual novel
Thank goodness for Internet Archive, for however long that lasts. Games along with other content need to be preserved in their original condition, especially in today's censor-heavy world

A more recent example of this is Devil May Cry 5 where excessive light bloom was used to censor Trish and Lady in Japan on the PS4/5 and in the West, but the Xbox One/Series X releases were completely untouched internationally

Japan needs to revamp their rating system, especially when it comes to M Rated games. If a person is 18 years old purchasing a product, they should be able to handle a little bit of nudity
Keep in mind this is a retro collection, so most people who would be interested in this should probably be at best in their early 30's.

The devs should've released the uncensored version outside of Japan. There is Switch games with nudity :-)
Furthermore, they could host a patch for Japanese outside of Japan and their government couldn't do sh*. I highly doubt their usual pixelations are enforceable now.

I finally decided to try a few adult games featured on Steam, and some of them are actually pretty good!
Yes, most of them have explicit intercourse scenes with variable consent, and a constant fan service. However, there are some stories that can never be properly told without the mature content. And that's because of the brutal censorship.
It's a shame that in order to find slightly mature themes and stories I have to go full perv.
So far my favorites are False Myth and SiniSistar. There are some nice metroidvanias too, like Crisis Point: Extinction.
CERO really needs their own 18 plus rating like PEGI 18 or ESRB M. That or devs in Japan need to make an uncensored version for the West. Capcom doesn’t censor Resident Evil in the West but does in Japan. Other devs should do same.
At least, they make a separate Mature version for a reason.

The original release of Tokyo Twilight Busters have a scene which a woman appears topless. It was censored in the Nintendo DS remake.
I bought the Japanese version of collection I, but found unlike some other games, that the translation is kind of important.
The same happened with another compilation by Edia. Both nudity and, uhm, "rude gestures", were censored in Cosmic Fantasy Collection 1&2. However the censorship isn't nearly as bad as the HUGE white block they added in the Valis games. Srsly, what were they thinking? 💀
And I just wishlist them for when they go on sale,.guess I'm not buying anything by them.

Thing with the Switch is that we don't have regional versions of games now. It's the same version regardless of where you buy it. Also I'm pretty sure Nintendo wouldn't have allowed nudity anyway.
Except they do as all they care about is the rating. Otherwise they couldn't care less whats in a game as long as its not on their hands (look at the number of low quality H games to see)

To be fair, why would they bother uncensoring it for the Western releases? It would probably require additional certification and whatnot because it would be a seperate SKU entirely, and would probably require some approval from Nintendo, as I believe Nintendo generally tries to keep parity between regions on eshop games that exist in multiple stores. Probably why the physical releases of the Pretty Girls series had nudity on the physical compilations in EU, but not the digital ones.
That's why I mostly dislike modern re-releases and prefer to emulate the original versions... ._.

I had no idea they were doing anything with Valis these days. I played the Mega Drive and PC-Engine versions of the first game a long time ago. They were not very good, but I guess it could be sort of fun to check out some of the later entries.
Did the other collections have similar censorship to this one?
Actually, I checked Nintendo’s website that VALIS: The Fantasm Soldier Collection III is rated T for Teen instead of the M rating. It is the same thing with VALIS: The Fantasm Soldier Collection I & II.
Other than that, it sucks that the MSX2 version of Valis II is censored. How unfortunate.

Some hentai games have had physical Switch prints with no censorship in PAL regions. They're all censored on the eshop though.

If scenes like this do have to be removed then I’d much rather they be censored like this (with a large blatant white block) than “localised”/edited in any way- at least this way they are being upfront that content has been removed or altered and not being snakes about it hoping that nobody would notice.

As far as I know, you cant have nudity in any form on consoles in Japan (official way, anyway). Only PC.

I think it's about time when playing the original version of old classic games.
Even though games like this can easily be emulated for free, there's tons of people, myself included, that would love to have physical copies and/or collections of old games like this.
However, why on Earth would anyone pay money for a game that's inferior to the emulated version?
If they're going to release collections like this, there had better be nice box art, extra concept art booklets, special bonus endings, and other goodies to make it worth it. I'm not spending money on a bad rom hack.

That's a damn shame. The previous switch releases have been pretty fun for such old games.
I think they should just put the ratings system logo over the censored bits instead, so people know exactly who to blame for it. Probably the best way to get those bothered by it to direct the complaints exactly where they need to be directed.

Sadly only Steam allows games with full nudity nowadays, but most of these games are obscure indies. But you can find them if you search hard enough.

I can sorta understand this, specifically for the nintendo switch version. but even then this censorship looks super lazy, and sucks that there isnt a single version that is uncensored for the collection. if the collection is on PC then hopefully some modders can restore the content.

In light of the strict CERO system, one might ask: "How on Earth was Illusion Games able to release outright SEX GAMES such as "Artificial Girl" and the "Artificial Academy" series? Here's how: Illusion Games never released any of its games on CONSOLES such as the Sony PlayStation or the Nintendo Switch. They instead released their games EXCLUSIVELY on PC. Games that are exclusively PC games don't need to go through CERO, unlike games that release on consoles.

I learned this with the Variable Geo series which started on PC98. They got censored when remase for the PC Engine, then censored yer agaon for the Sega Saturn and SNES, then xensored ecen more for rhe PlayStation. And none of them ever got localized.
Also rhe blood and violence dor PS3's Fost of the North Star Kens Rage was censored in Japan but i censored when localized.
And Western games with nudity like PS4's The Order got censored wjen released on Japan

This is so freaking stupid! The movies in the USA that are rated R are age 17 & can have full body nudity yet a rated M is still stuck as a PG-13 level yet you still have to be 18 to buy it. It really doesn't matter what they are rated, The fans of these games will still buy it. And they are adults.
