@@SnavelsNot entirely sure if that’s the case for the original Doom, since the BFG went through some major revisions during development. Great video. Doom 3 definitely should not be neglected, as it is one of the most significant entries in the whole series - it revitalized the Doom community and saved it from dying in the early 2000's, bringing some much-needed fresh blood. But folks nowadays tend to forget this - probably because it contradicts the "black sheep of the series" narrative that they are trying to push so hard... Pity. However, I think that the game's great mod support, as well as all the experimentation that can be done through console commands, may ultimately help it "outlive" the Bethesda Dooms. Well done :)
Very well put dude. True, it feels like many people dislike Doom 3 just because it is not known as a power fantasy. Little do they know how aggresively and fast you can play this game, and on top of that, it is so customizable and so much more solid. You can't just paper clip your way out of walls like in the modern titles.

@@ViciousFirearms Agreed. TBH, I was pretty skeptical about D3 when it first came out, but after playing it in 2005, the game earned my respect very quickly.
To add to the doom 2016 bfg overpower, immediately going into slo mo by opening the weapon wheel slows the projectile travel but not the damage, becoming even more powerful
Like the Shotgun, 3's BFG is actually stronger than the original counterpart, it's just that the game isn't designed around enemy hordes like it used to, so the gun never gets its chance to shine at its fullest; although using it to dispatch those couple of despicable Chaingunner duos before and within the crane section of Caverns 1 is satisfying.
My favorite BFG of all time without question has always been and always will be the q3 BFG, which I think is a 10k. There's just no topping it. Granted, it's not really the room clearer that you get in the Doom games, but you never need to clear rooms in q3 so there's no reason for it to be. The problem with the BFG is it's always so chunky, has a long wind up and is super situational. It's really cathartic it you just want to blast a huge hole through a cloud, but again, situational. The q3 BFG is basically a vastly more powerful rocket launcher with no splash damage, one shots everyone, fires rapidly, and is just generally cool as hell. It feels like the biggest fuckin' gun, but without having to be a giant siege weapon you gotta wheel aroond with you and light a 10 second fuse to fire. Not saying I don't like flippin' the top off the ol' BFG button and entering in my secret code, swiping the keycard, and turning both keys at once to just completely level the place. That's still fun as hell, but it just can't compare to holding a rapid fire instadeath plasma bazooka in the middle of a deathmatch. That's not the fault of the 9k models, it's just that, well, nothing can compare to that.
Don’t forget to let go of that trigger after those first few seconds, otherwise the BFG 9000 will literally blow up in your hands, being instant death. I’ve died from that wondering what happened until I figured this out.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Good question. I am actually working on a All Collectables category. It will probably take a while before I upload a speedrun of it but it is work in progress.
I remember the first time I got the bfg in doom 3 I was underwhelmed with the first shot, then realized it could be charged, and immediately killed myself by overcharging the bfg. IMO, they don’t do a good job at all of communicating how the weapon is meant to be used. Unlike every other doom game, I had to look up how to use the bfg in doom 3. It’s a fun weapon for sure after learning how to use it, but I think they could’ve used a different charging sound. Individual tones or each charge and then the rapid beeping to cue that you need to fire or it’s gonna blow up
Wow, didn't know about how the splash damage worked, but it explains why "missed" balls disintegrate very far away enemies. It seems to be 4 damage types damage though - Impact, Tendril, Enemy only splash with massive range and a limited range self-splash. Looking at the self-splash at 3:36 it seems to me it's roughly 100 damage, 2/3 absorbed by armor plus some must have fallen off with distance.
Yeah I guess you can count the self damage as the 4th type of damage. However, self damage is (I think, haven't actually checked the game files) also determined by the difficulty you are playing on. On nightmare, the self damage is ridiculously high. The armor in Doom 3 unfortunately never absors that much damage. 2/3 is Quake 3 and Quake Champions numbers. In Doom 3, you barely even get protected by armor. I'd say that the absorbtion number is something ridiculous like 1/5 damage goes to armor. I will actually check that, you got me interested.
Thank you. 🙂 The reason I did not mention it is because the last time I actually killed myself by overcharging the BFG was probably 15+ years ago 😀. I completely forgot that you can even do that.
For how full of quirks the D3 BFG is, it's certainly balanced and fun to use. I like it. Although I wouldn't mind of more demons were a bit more tanky and justified its use a bit more in the vanilla game, because at 200 HP, ain't no Caco cloud gonna last against the player! Maybe the 2016/Eternal BFG was cooked up with the idea that it fires a quadruple charge shot every time? The carnage certainly matches the full-charged D3 BFG... 🤔
For speedruns, the BFG is pretty well balanced because you encounter more enemies blocking you, like in Site 3. However, in casual play, I can see how the gun would be a bit too strong. Still fun to use 🙂. It is interesting that if you look at the .def files that contain damage values for weapons, it says that the BFG deals 200 projectile and 100 splash damage, but somehow this is doubled at some point. The BFG being that strong might even be an oversight. 🤷♂️ And yeah, in modern Doom games, could be that they had in mind that every shot should be fully charged, or maybe even 8 charges.
I would be curious to see if there is any difference between the gun performance of, the original version of Doom 3 and the Doom 3 BFG re-release version. I have found the shotgun to be decent at medium range on the rerelease, and cannot remember how it felt originally. Great video.
@@RiskyFriskyHandle I don't think there is. I used to think they nerfed the shotgun spread for the BFG Edition too, but I can't find any evidence of it. Pretty sure it is just a myth.
That's incredible seeing all those demons on that Hell platform. 3:33 You actually took the time to spawn each of them into the map with the debug menu eh?
Anyone played ultra violence on doom 2016-doom eternal to play that skill you have to get gud with every other weapon but the bfg like my go to was rocket launcher - dbl shotgun. The bfg has always been a panic button weapon
Yep. Those games have soooo much crazy/amazing and also overpowered weapon tech, especially DE. Cancelling charge for the Siege Mode of the Gauss Cannon in 2016, quickswapping to deal insane amounts of damage with Rocket, Shotgun, Gauss and Precision Bolt + Rocket combos in Eternal, among others. If you know what you are doing just a bit, those games become surprisingly easy, even on UN. However, the 100% UN speedruns are insane in both games.
The power of videogames from those times is that they have the console and you can use it to do actions like remove hud, remove weapon, change movement speed, and many other cmds that help with capturing such shots.
They balanced the bfg in doom eternal by giving it only 2 cells capacity and making super heavy demons resistant to it. This relegates it to be a space maker to clear weaker enemies from the arena or a combo weapon to deal massive damage to a super heavy to then finish it off with a follow up attack.
I am not sure if you could kill Super Heavies with 1 cell in 2016 either. Barons definitely not. Either way, it's still OP. Don't get me wrong, I love both DE and 2016.
@lekolega there was a small chance barons could survive the bfg blast on 2016 but more often than not for me they died. Also you could get bfg cells with the upgraded ammo boost rune which was completely busted for obvious reasons. The bfg is still powerful in eternal, but compared to 2016 its much more balanced.
Is there enough interesting facts about the Doom 3 Plasma Rifle and it's inclusion in Speed run strats for a video? It's easily my favorite Plasma Rifle in the series, that reload animation and sound is perfect.
I've played Doom 3 and RoE through multiple times and never realized that the BFG could charge-shot. Then again, I also refuse to use the weapon as I save all of its ammo for when it is really needed... not even using it in boss fights because I'm always certain there will be a bigger boss right around the corner! >
One question: if you fire 3 single charge cells and you keep pressing the trigger button on the last one to charge to 4, does the last one deal a 4 cells damage or just one?
What do you mean "if the cyberdemon was vulnerable to normal weapons"? Me and a buddy played the game co-op on the original xbox via system link and fought the cyberdemon using nothing but chainsaws. I recall it taking something like 45 minutes, but we killed the cyberdemon without touching the soul cube. It can definitely be done.
@@Stevil935 Pretty sure they made Cyberdemon vulnerable to regular weapons for the COOP. When you are playing any of the PC versions solo, the Soul Cube is the only thing that can deal damage to him. Hope you two had fun getting instakilled from getting stomped by him like a goomba in super mario 🤣
It is very easy. As soon as you open the door that requires Bernie Lipsitz's PDA, just rush to kill the 2 maggots in the Hydrocon Lab as fast as possible and then you can get him as he rund away. There might also be a shotgunner in the way before the 2 maggots but he is also an easy one shot.
@@xanps3 BFG mostly because of the movement speed increase. The cutscenes are unskippable but I play on the RBDoom3BFG source port which makes them skippable and gives you access to the console where you can tweak so many things. You can make the game look almost identical to the OG game. You can perform speedruns on it better. The stamina bar lasts longer and replenishes after cutscenes. The load times are like 5x faster than in the OG game as well. The only thing I hate about the BFG Edition is the stupid and unnecessary saving game overlay.

Yep. Fiddled with the console a lot for the video. Old games are great like that because you can do stuff like that.
A Doom 3 analysis video? Why hasn't Decinos done that already, I'd love to see him try something different than just doom one and two.
I assume he just doesn't give an f about Doom 3, like most people.
I think of the BFG from Doom 64 cause that was my first doom game :)
You remind me about Decino, Coincident and the guy who talk about cacodemon hole
Luckily Doom 3 cacodemons don't poop.
In my playthrough, I didn't know that if you hold it for too long, you exploded
I don't think anyone watched the BFG briefing video beforehand. Everyone just had to blow themselves up to find out. You're not the only one 😀
How did you capture the flyby footage? Great video by the way!
@@StrongArmElijah The sound is nice for sure but it is kind of a plain weapon. Not much to it so I don't think it would make a good video. We'll see.
@@lekolega Unfortunate. Your shotgun and BFG video were great. Doom 3 is my favorite game and it's about time we get some cool in-depths for it.
@@StrongArmElijah Thank you very much 🙂. I will see if I can make more.
6:10 Doom 3 shotgun moment
Lmao, no self dmg if you shoot a floor xD
That looked so funny!
in terms of design I think Doom3's version looks the best
Wonder if you could analyze the BFG from other games. Quake 3 Arena, Fallout 4, and Rage 2?
Can't promise anything. Haven't even played any of them except Quake 3
nothing against the idea or usage but doom 3 bfg doesn't have a fancy weapon wheel with slow motion to fully utilize it's potential
😀
I've played Doom 3 and RoE through multiple times and never realized that the BFG could charge-shot.
Then again, I also refuse to use the weapon as I save all of its ammo for when it is really needed... not even using it in boss fights because I'm always certain there will be a bigger boss right around the corner! >
@@Farren246 Haha yeah dude, that is how I always played every game before I started speedrunning. You gotta let loose, it is only a video game 🙂
nice
cool vid subscribed
Good shit
Please make a commentated speedrun of doom 3
Coming very soon. Sooner than you might think.
@@lekolega sweet 🔥
Cheers.
One question: if you fire 3 single charge cells and you keep pressing the trigger button on the last one to charge to 4, does the last one deal a 4 cells damage or just one?
Same way as most of the other guns: It usually doesn't.
it just does
5:17 Cyberdemon is Mario Lmao
@@Ursuart Somehow nobody bothered to mention this before.
Might be a little off topic, but I wonder if Quake 4 Dark matter gun has similiar oddities. It's similiar game, right?
Great remark. I will try and find out how the Dark Matter Gun works. Come to think of it, I should replay Quake 4.
Can't you also die from overcharging the bfg in doom 3?
You do die.
An overloaded BFG exploding in your hands is quite a health hazard indeed :P
Interesting.
DooM3
You can catch up to Sarge and Swan?! WTF
Yeah, easily. I am surprised that people still don't know this tbh.
@@lekolega I'll have to try that soon. I 100%ed all the BFG Edition steam achievements last year so the game is still somewhat fresh in my mind
I created my own mod which let's you overcharge and fire a lvl 4 projectile without overloading and exploding
Left out the part where overcharging the bfg for too long will result in an explosion killing the player.
Yep. Didn't even think of that somehow. But in my defence, who doesn't know that? 🙃
I can never get that early bfg I don't know how
It is very easy.
Which doom do you prefer the bfg edition or the og?
@@xanps3 BFG mostly because of the movement speed increase. The cutscenes are unskippable but I play on the RBDoom3BFG source port which makes them skippable and gives you access to the console where you can tweak so many things. You can make the game look almost identical to the OG game. You can perform speedruns on it better. The stamina bar lasts longer and replenishes after cutscenes. The load times are like 5x faster than in the OG game as well.
The only thing I hate about the BFG Edition is the stupid and unnecessary saving game overlay.
Hello, a question, how do you do it to have the game without shadows? Is it a trick?
i honestly don't know. i play the bfg edition, more specifically RBDoom3BFG 1.2.0. with some HDR and Post Processing commands disabled but nothing specific about shadows.
@@lekolega ok you are the best doom 3 player👍👍👍👍👍
@@lekolega What HDR commands do you use?
