Feels like the 4050 is the best candidate for frame gen + dlss use in the 40 series laptops since it usually ends up in the dlss sweet spot of 40-60 fps and frame gen takes it up to 100. A serious consideration for an entry level 40 series laptop if it wasnt priced so poorly compared to previous gen entry levels
@@RyomaE28 I think he meant that you need to hit 60 fps without frame generation to be worth it. That is why frame generation doesn't make much sense, you already need a good graphics card to be able to truly get the benefits. There is a video about fg that talks about this.
@@GESSIO26 above 60 I feel like why even use FG... you're not gaining anything.. only reason why people like more than 60 fps is the lower latency which will infact slightly increase with frame gen
The 1% lows are very similar between them which means it's neck and neck when discussing smoothness, or in the case of 3050 and 4050, lack thereof. And using DLSS3 is anything but honest since the 4050 can barely hit 50fps without it, which means an 80fps framegen has over 15-20ms added latency making it a similar experience to playing games in last gen consoles.

I have a comment to make. I sincerely appreciate all the hardwork you put in, and this is particularly why I think reviewing your testing methodology should be done from time to time. Since you say the average fps in all games graph is a compact way to see the performance differences easily, I want to point out that different games have different typical fps targets. E.g. in Cyberpunk 2077 it's cool to have 60 fps, but in CSGO or Apex Legends 120 fps might be a reasonable expectation. So carrying out an average of games for which the optimal fps targets widely vary is, I think, a poor way to do statistics. The suggestions I have (feel free to discuss) is to use a reference machine to find out fps for different games (data for which you will have available). This will give you an idea of the optimal target fps for different games. Now you can compare each new GPU to this target - obtain a ratio, for instance. Finally, you compare GPU 1 and GPU 2 ratios, which are the subjects of comparison in a particular video, and that I think respects the vast fps differences in games better.

But if I manage to get a good deal on very specific 4050 powered laptops, I may have to save up some more & go that route instead. I appreciate the in depth comparisons as always even though I've never been a fan of MSI's budget options, one of my biggest gripes being the cooling solutions they opt for. Like, why would you equip a 4050 powered laptop with just a single fan & 1-2 vents. It forces them to have these low power limits & you don't really see the full potential of the GPU.
6gb is not gonna cut it anymore for me even on portable given I'd like something which can be used with Stable Diffusion, which I think will be a necessity for creatives in the near future.
Thanks for the reply Yes, I did some searching and it seems the AMD 7040 cpus are delayed due to some bios issues, and add to the the restricted production batch for those cpus. Really interested in the new G14 from asus, those are one of the few released laptops with AMD cpus for this time being, the other laptop majority has switched to Intel
nice that it genuinely gets avg fps above the 60fps, price is a bit high though, and 1% lows are interesting to find the cause of, as that could offset the over 60fps smoothness.
Question: is it still worth it buying an rtx 3050 for, say, the next 5 years? I'm currently conflicted whether to stick with a 3050 for budget concerns or go with at least a 4050 for some future-proofing. Main use will be for game developmeng work, gaming, and just day-to-day use. I also travel a lot so some portability is great.
The review in detail and very high quality. I would recommend anyone looking to find out comparison between these two cards to watch this review and you will be able to better decide which one to go with
Kindly make a videos on how top of the line gaming laptops from 4-5 years ago/2-3 gen of GPU's ahead perform today. Would help alot in deciding if buying a 3K laptop for gaming isnt a dumb choice with how fast they are getting costlier with each new GPU lineups.
Great reviews, Jarod, keep them coming. Tried comparing the 4050 results to your 3060 vs 4060 review. 3060 will better but that was at 130w. Would love to see a 3050, 3060, 4050, to 4060 review comparison. Lots of overlap with different laptops pricewise with the different gpus. Do you think watt for watt, 4050 is like 3060? Better?
What I conclude; If you have a 3050 laptop, you can stick with that, lower a few quality preset and still play almost all games around 60 fps. Going for a 4050 from a 3050 not worth. If you are buying a new laptop, forget aboıut 3050 and put some extra bucks for 4050. Great review as always.
I'm planning on buying my first gaming laptop. Which do you prefer, asus tuf a15 with ryzen 7 6800hs and rtx 3050, or asus tuf a15 with ryzen 7 7735hs and rtx 4050, or lenovo ideapad gaming 3 with ryzen 7 5800h and rtx 3060? The one with rtx 4050 cost more than the 3050 and 3060 around 160$-180$ in my country. Hope you can help me decide. I've been researching and still can't decide. This probably will be my laptop for 5-10yrs. My budget is only a little over 1100$
Hi Jarrod, Should I buy Legion 5 pro gen 7 RTX3070 ryzen 7 6800h or wait for Legion Pro 5i rtx 4070 i7 13th gen. I still don't know when it will launch in india.
I'm freaking confused for the last couple of weeks. I'm willing to buy Legion 7 Gen 7 AMD Advantage. It has Ryzen 9 6900HX, Radeon RX6850M XT 12 GB Graphic card, 32 gb ram, 2 TB SSD. It now costs around 2180 USD (previously it was 2800). Will it be better than 3070ti? or will this gpu equally perform with RTX 4070? And will it be good enough for solid content creation? please give me a reply.
The RTX 6850M XT is significantly faster than the RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 4070 laptop GPUs overall, especially at 1080p, but slower at ray tracing (except in games that need more than 8GB VRAM, where the 6850M XT will still be faster), and does not support DLSS (so is not as good if you want to play at 4K in games that support DLSS). The 6850M XT is about as fast as an RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU at 1080p (though slower at 1440p and 4K). However, I don't think this laptop is worth more than $2000. You may be able to buy a similar laptop with less RAM and storage, and then upgrade them yourself. This is often a lot cheaper than buying a laptop with more RAM and storage preinstalled. Laptops with a Ryzen 7 6800H or Ryzen 9 6900HS and RX 6800M are only about 5% slower than laptops with the 6900HX and 6850M XT, but sometimes much cheaper, and use slightly less power. There's a Corsair Voyager A1600 with a 6800M, 6900HS, 32GB RAM, a 2TB SSD, and a 240Hz screen on Newegg for only $1900. It does have slightly worse brighness than the Legion though, so isn't as good for content creation or watching HDR content, but it should be about equivalent for gaming overall, or even better for competitive/high-refresh-rate gaming.
hello sir jarrod, do you have any extra potato laptop not being used, ill just use it for my work and convert it into an emulator for low end games... thanks
Is it better to get a laptop with 32 gb ram and rtx 3050 graphics or a laptop with 16 gb ram and rtx 4050 graphics, assuming they both cost the same. And each has a 1TB hard drive?

There should be a few comparisons when you're running games with high population like Planetside 2 during a 96+ battle, just bring both starting characters into the fight looking in the same direction.
I want to buy Asus Vivobook pro 15 with RTX 4050 6GB and Intel i7, mostly for programming and networking, also for gaming, is that laptop with those specs good for gaming even that its not gaming laptop? Thank you✌️
It is funny how all reviewers fancy frame generation, like its a base feature and not just supported by a handful new titles, those titles each cost like 5-10% of the laptops price lol...
It's also funny how comments like this happily ignore the fact that I always specify that it's only available in a handful of games, the point is it will presumably grow and get bigger over time like DLSS. Same thing happened there.
@@JarrodsTech Yes, I know you do, yet still many commenters do not seem to understand that is not a base 4xxx class driver feature and 99.99% games will not support it. But yeah the low-mid category in laptop chips is the best "benefiter" for it for sure.
Disappointing to see the poor 1% lows that matters more in terms of smoothness than average fps in someways. I think it would mostly be due to the smaller memory interface
Good day, please tell me which one is better between these two laptops??? I watched a few of your videos, too, and i know you're more helpful when you pick one from these two laptops for me: ASUS ROG Strix G 15.6in R7 16GB 512GB RTX3050 Gaming Laptop OR ASUS TUF F15 15.6in i5 8GB 512GB RTX3050Ti Gaming Laptop? It would help me a lot if you could tell me which one to buy, Thank you.
40w version is more suitable for a entry level thin and light creator laptop like Acer swift X or Asus vivobook And this kind of laptop usually comes with a very good looking screen So if I'm going to buy a 40w 4050, I'm more likely to buy a vivobook, instead of a gaming laptop 🤔🤔🤔
To be honest, considering that I don't use ray tracing and i don't really care about it, my msi gl75 with full powered rtx2070 does much better than lower tier gaming laptops. I think I'd rather wait another year before upgrading. 80 fps is sweet spot in my case although i get 120fps in modern warfare II benchmark
Supposedly the RTX 4050 can reach 140W, which is a significant jump from the 3050s. Add the 6GB VRAM and this should definitely be a good showing for the new budget cards. Unfortunately it's gonna be priced just as much as the 3060s. In my country anyways. Still it's quite a good showing for the cards but it might not be as fast or faster than the 3060.
4050 in my country (Indonesia) is still cheaper than last gen 3060. The lowest 3060 i've seen is around 1200$, while the 4050 can be as low as 950$ (msi gf63)
It will be a substantial upgrade for you if you're looking for something new. It really depends on whether your current laptop is doing what you need it to or not.

The fact that 3050 has a higher memory bandwidth 128 but bus compared to 96 bit of 4050 shows it in total war Warhammer which is bandwidth intensive
I was looking for a laptop for warhammer 3 (I have a desktop pc too) does the rtx 3050 run it well in your opinion?
Sure Nvidia, a laptop RTX 4050 can use DLSS 3.0 technology, but a desktop RTX 3090 ti can't...................................
its like, would you be the king of 1000years old african jungle civilization vs a peasant of current generation

How do you find out the GPU Watt before buying a gaming pc?
Hey! Does anybody have an idea when the new Asus G14 2023, the ones with AMD 7040 cpus, are going to be released?
Seems to be delayed like most Zen 4 laptops, not sure when.
Didn't Asus shift to Intel cpu in g series this year ??
I'd probably go with the 4050, at least then you also have DLSS3 and Frame Gen
@@JarrodsTech I see. I guess it's worth it to cash out a bit more for a 4050. Thank you!
What's better rtx 3050 32gb or rtx 4050 16gb ?
The review in detail and very high quality. I would recommend anyone looking to find out comparison between these two cards to watch this review and you will be able to better decide which one to go with
This was amazing. Nice to see the power jump, especially with the lower TDP.
Next: 3060 vs 4050
Kindly make a videos on how top of the line gaming laptops from 4-5 years ago/2-3 gen of GPU's ahead perform today. Would help alot in deciding if buying a 3K laptop for gaming isnt a dumb choice with how fast they are getting costlier with each new GPU lineups.
I don't have the hardware to go back that far anymore.
Better?
4050 vs 3060 is going to be an interesting one, i think the difference will be marginal
What I conclude;
If you have a 3050 laptop, you can stick with that, lower a few quality preset and still play almost all games around 60 fps.
Going for a 4050 from a 3050 not worth.
If you are buying a new laptop, forget aboıut 3050 and put some extra bucks for 4050.
Great review as always.
@1:18 3050 uses lesser tgp power than the 4050, lesser power, lessser heat, and lesser noise, longer lifespan

It took a while to get the right laptops to do this as fairly as possible, sorry!
@@JarrodsTech That's ok. Glad you did it as fast as you could.
when new TUF video? I'm torn between 3070 and 4050 17'' TUF but need more reviews to make a decision.
what is the price difference between the two laptop?
Ultra thin or thin laptop with this GPU will be a really good deal.

4050 is better u pumpkin

What a comprehensive test.

What I'm wondering is, is it better to get a 85watt 3050, over a 40watt 4050?
I'm freaking confused for the last couple of weeks. I'm willing to buy Legion 7 Gen 7 AMD Advantage. It has Ryzen 9 6900HX, Radeon RX6850M XT 12 GB Graphic card, 32 gb ram, 2 TB SSD. It now costs around 2180 USD (previously it was 2800). Will it be better than 3070ti? or will this gpu equally perform with RTX 4070? And will it be good enough for solid content creation? please give me a reply.
Without dlss3 it would be better than both 4070 and 3070 (they perform the same anyway) but worse or same in ray tracing.
@@nathangamble125 Thanks a lot for your kind reply . Well, How's RX6850M XT 12 GB for content creation?

Hi Jarrod! Do you suggest these videocards for Adobe Master collection products, like Photoshop, Premier Pro or After Effects?
why no DLLS 3.0 for RTX 3000 Series?
According to Nvidia that hardware can technically do it, but it's suboptimal and doesn't offer a good enough experience to make it practical.

There should be a few comparisons when you're running games with high population like Planetside 2 during a 96+ battle, just bring both starting characters into the fight looking in the same direction.

Hello !
Do you know any web to analyze things like those you showed? Specifically fps per watt or fps per euro (or dollar)
170€ differences between. Alaptop with 3050 and 4050 laptop, which i must buy?😢😢😢
I think it would mostly be due to the smaller memory interface
what about the battery life? are there differences?
Can't compare that as both laptops have different size batteries.
Good day, please tell me which one is better between these two laptops???
ASUS ROG Strix G17 G713QR (G713QR-K4009) rtx 3070

A bit strange comparison, wasn't it better to compare laptops with a higher tdp to see the real difference between these 2 gpus?

this video shows what can be played on a 3050, I also have a 3050 vs 3050ti that shows games here: th-cam.com/video/Y_t6f_Bu2y8/w-d-xo.html
How do u increase the 45 watt limitation on rtx 3050 to 100 watt?
You cannot do that without flashing the VBIOS, but that is risky for laptops that came with low wattage GPU as they are not designed for so much power delivery/cooling.

@@JarrodsTech ok bro thanks I'll wait
Out of the Msi GF63 rtx3050 and the ASUS tuf f15 rtx3050 which one would you say provides better performance?
Depends on TGP and 4/6Gb vram version
40w version is more suitable for a entry level thin and light creator laptop like Acer swift X or Asus vivobook
And this kind of laptop usually comes with a very good looking screen
So if I'm going to buy a 40w 4050, I'm more likely to buy a vivobook, instead of a gaming laptop 🤔🤔🤔
You can, and you will still have the same performance since creator laptops can cool a 45W GPU.
To be honest, considering that I don't use ray tracing and i don't really care about it, my msi gl75 with full powered rtx2070 does much better than lower tier gaming laptops.
