I can not count the times people tell me that Keto is bad and will kill me. You need vegetables or you will not survive... That is why I rarely thought about doing Keto. But then I had weight loss surgery and I could not eat and this "noise", the constant craving of food was gone. And I noticed it. I had no idea that it was there or how strong it was. It was bliss. Then after 6 month or so it came back. I did notice. I asked myself why and now that I could feel it, I could figure out what causes it and it was carbs. If I had one bagel, a few hours later I was ravenous and hungry for more and it would not go away for 24 hours. That put me on the path to not have carbs. And it morphed from intermittent fasting to Keto. I am doing this for 3 years (??) now and I miss nothing. I bake my own Keto (Lupin Flour) bread, have eggs and meat and some low carb vegetables and am happy. Bloodwork is fine even the cholesterol. I decided to break it a few weeks ago for a breakfast place on vacation that had these french fried potato spuds I used to love. So I had a normal Ruben with bread and a pile of those fries. I ate maybe 1/3. Stopped. Had the sandwich and realized that I don't care. I did not need to have this. I don't crave any sugar in anything. It is actually icky to me.

Yes! I finally figured that out too. Carbs make you crave sugar! After eating pizza, what do you want, something sweet (or spaghetti, Chinese). Keto is the answer for me. I love how I feel and look! No going back.

Easy, I first learned about the ketogenic lifestyle on July 18, 2018 when my doctor congratulated me on being prediabetic, hypertensive and morbidly obese.
He gave me 2 options. First was pharmaceutical. The other he and his wife had been experimenting with was a keto diet. He gave me those options, briefly explained how a keto diet worked and as I left the doctors office, called the wife and explained to her how we were both on the ketogenic diet. 😂
I went hard-core the first year and lost over 100lbs fat. As far as I'm concerned, this lifestyle saved my life twice! Once from a supposedly family cycle of T2D and heart disease and the 2nd time was when Covid hit. I was so big in 2018, I probably would have been hospitalized in 2020-22 at some point if I hadn't changed....... despite me getting an 8" blood clot in my left leg after the 2nd "safe and effective" shot.....😏

Hey Steve 👋🏼😄 Another great podcast! Thank you 🙏🏼
For me the transition to keto wasn’t difficult hardly at all. I started with a 24-hr fast and just dove right in having eaten a “healthy” diet prior. My reason for starting keto so late in life was that I simply didn’t know about it and the benefits until stumbling on a natural remedy video and going from there.
Although, I will say kicking the beer and sweeter drinks led me towards dry wines instead and that’s been a bit of a struggle to kick. Otherwise, my keto journey is nearing its 2nd Ketoversary in a few weeks. Yay for keto!! 😁👏🏼🙌🏼

Hi Steve. Great to see you. I laughed as I remember killer bees. I am so old (80) I remember nuclear bomb drills when we had to get under our desks and duck our heads. Like that would save us but my, we did crazy things..hard to think school administration would go along with that. The 50s.
My biggest block was what Dr Becky calls the three 'C's. Cookies, candy, cake. Being a gal, I think we tend to have more of a sweet tooth. But learned to make subs with almond or coconut flour and stevia.

I think it depends on if you want to educate (fight with) your doctor or just trick the cholesterol test.
Educate: watch videos by Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Rob Cywes, and Dave Feldman on LDL cholesterol and hyper-responders. There's also a great chapter in "Lies I Taught in Medical School" by Dr. Robert Lufkin on how over-prescribed and ineffective statins are. There's also a lipid panel you can request that shows the LDL particle size, assuming your doctor understands that there are different types of LDL and having a high large particle LDL is perfectly alright.
Trick the test: Watch videos on the "Feldman Protocol" or I did a podcast around a year ago where I talk about a handful of supplements I took for 3 weeks prior to my lipid panel and my doc was quite pleased with the results.

Educating myself more on the factors you mention so I can stand my ground & do what I deem best for me & as I know he’ll ‘demand’ new blood panels, I’ll request the lipid panel you mentioned. Then, of course, I’ll supplement up before my next blood draw. Awesome & thank you!

I really didn't know anything about keto until Akins, I bought his book and started down that path. It seemed to restrictive and being a person who loved Blueberries, I just didn't want to continue. A little over 5 years ago I went in for my annual. I was a train wreak. One day after that appointment I just made the decision to start keto with a basic understanding of it. 3 months into it, I was down over 60 lbs. I went on for a follow up appointment and they could not believe the change. All my doc said was to keep doing whatever you're doing. I have not looked back. The first book I read on the subject was "The Big Fat Surprise" by Nina Teicholz. Having spent over 20 years in the medical field, this book was eye opening and shocking. If you are really interested in how we got here, this is the book. During my career, I was spouting the same things as described in Dr Berry's book.

I think the biggest thing that prevented me from doing keto sooner was 1) I was not really aware of it way back and 2) I was in denial about my weight gain since high school until my A1C elevated to pre-diabetic level. I smoked for 20 years or so but I pretty consistently worked out over the years by swimming and running mostly. I did not think it was possible to cut out carbs that I was so accustomed to preparing for every meal and I was genuinely surprised when I got over the initial “keto flu” at how easy it is and intermittent fasting as well. My epiphany was when I realized that I was eating 6 meals a day ( that I thought were all healthy!) At this point I am a bit pissed off by the medical and dental professions for not realizing and educating the ill effects that carbohydrates have on general health and dental health in particular. The whole “eat less, move more” argument that places the blame on patients is infuriating as well as the dentists mantra that you need to brush and floss your teeth in order to prevent decay. I mean if you read Weston Price’s “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration “ you cannot deny the effects of the modern diet on dental and oral health. This tendency for both professions to implicitly or subtly blame the patients for these chronic diseases and conditions is truly astounding.

After more than 12 years of (unsuccessfully) following Weight Watchers, I was indoctrinated into the SAD, calorie (or points) counting, fat is bad way of thinking. Instead I listened and learned more about science of it for a year, while gaining more weight, but was too overwhelmed in not knowing how to make all the changes at once. I finally realized I did NOT need to make all changes at once, and Instead started in baby steps where I only changed one thing at a time, got used to it for a while before adding another change. Even on "part time" keto for the first year I still lost 40 lbs and got rid of T2D & low thyroid issues and a long list of other things. In year 2, I finally went full-time clean keto and lost 50 more lbs... and another 10 after that. Coming up in May will be 6 yr keto-versary and I've maintained easily. Over the. years I tried pescatarian, vegetarian, and vegan all of which seemed to help initially, however, in the end, each one slowly started to make me feel worse. I eventually gave up and returned to eating whatever (standard American diet). That also left me feeling low energy, brain fog, etc. When searching for a new diet plan, the only one left was keto. I was hesitant to start keto primarily because of the negative picture surrounding keto in the media and medical community. The high levels of fat in comparison to carbs seemed so counter-intuitive to everything I knew about food nutrition. (not much) My rationale for going keto was, what have I got to lose. None of the other supposedly healthy diet plans had worked.
I began feeling better almost immediately. I started with bulletproof coffee, skipping breakfast, and cutting out carbs as much as possible, and adding in more animal protein. Less inflation meant less joint pain. More energy meant it was easier to be motivated to exercise. No more blood sugar crashes in the mid-afternoon that left me feeling tired and sleepy. With my body producing ketones my brain fog went away. Did I crave bread, pasta, snack food? Yes, however over time that has diminished, though not entirely even to this day. Have been low carb now for several years and don't see myself changing anytime soon. I would describe my food plan as a "real food" diet. Primarily vegetables, some fruit, animal protein, and some fermented foods. If it needs a nutrition label, it probably is not "real food". Thank you for all the wonderful content you create. Has helped on my journey to find a food plan that works for me.

By the time I heard about keto, I too was not wanting to give up crunchy carbs and white rice. We always had a container of white rice in the fridge. Now I am almost completely carnivore and if I cannot get my daily dose of bacon I feel like I will go into withdrawls. Excellent explanation of the studies, particurarly the 7 country study.

I am ashamed that I didn't go into a ketogenic way of eating, back when my Mom was trying curb sugar. I had watched her go through so many yo-yo diets, I just didn't support her. (She also had massive carb addiction issues, but no one knew what that was 30-some years ago.) Now, her memory is part of the "why" I maintain this eating lifestyle. The thing that made me hesitate about changing from SAD was years of watching *her* diet struggles, and being a hardcore foodie. Now, I'm a "recovering foodie"! 😂🎉

I was/am a carbaholic. I had grown up during the low fat era and had switched from old normal (meat & 2 or 3 veg) during my teens and early 20’s to cheese for brekkie, sandwich for lunch and pasta/rice with sauce or sweet curry, cheese and potato croquettes with spinach and ratatouille, sausage, potatoes & onions, baked or boil in bag fish with potatoes etc etc for dinner. I couldn’t imagine giving up bread (what would I do for lunch at work???), pasta or rice or potatoes, my meat/fish intake was lowered because my main meals were carb heavy. I didn’t physically eat much but it was all carby.
I had to learn to eat meat properly before I could move to Keto!

I, too, had done Adkins! I lost 60 or 70 lbs.. then the holidays came, and I went off as well. When I tried to start back after the holidays, I got keto flu... and not knowing that's what it was, I thought, "I can't do keto... it makes me feel horrible! " The excuses were a plenty, like you. "I can't give up... bread." Now that I have given it up I don't miss it. Like you say it's just a conveyance device.

Finally, I went to a doctor. Saw my testosterone was near zero. Got me on LH and FSH medication and now my appetite is finally normal and this ketogenic way of eating is FINALLY working!!! I am finally eating way less and my mental health is 1000% better than before.

I hated it and wasn’t successful because there weren’t all of the helpful recipes and products that tastes great like we have these days. I absolutely hate Stevia and that was basically the best sweetener that we had. Because of that, I didn’t last long on keto. Fast forward to last year, I was trying to decide what I was going to do to lose weight because I had developed hypertension. Through my researching, I decided that keto may be the healthiest and fastest way, and the thought that it can calm my potato chips cravings was a plus. 😂. Today, I can’t see myself NOT being on keto in some form because I FEEL so much better and I sleep so much better.

I thought I was good enough until I took Terbinafine (orally) to fight toenail fungus. The doctor wanted to do a 12-week course and do blood tests at the start, halfway through, and at the end to make sure my liver wasn't getting beat up by the medication. All three were fasting blood tests and all three had my blood sugar at over 300. On that third visit, we talked about it, she did a finger prick and measure my A1C and it was 12.7.
    Bam! Pre-diabetic.
"Good enough" was no longer good enough. So it was time to fix things and I found out a keto diet could do that. That was almost 4 years ago and I haven't had an A1C above 5.7 since then. Also, my liver handled the terbinafine like a champ.

As my wife does Intermittent Fasting, I’m also doing it (18 hour window). But, as a guy with a slight build (5’9” 142lbs), I don’t need to lose any more weight, so I’ve backed off and now consider myself “keto-ish”. I avoid the biggies (sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes, processed foods and bread), but don’t shy away from fruits, vegetables (I’ll eat all of the broccoli you can fit on my plate) and my wife makes me a loaf of low carb bread, that I stretch out for a couple of weeks.

I remember a HUGE 70's fear......QUICKSAND! I thought quicksand was everywhere and would kill, willy nilly!
