I completely agree with you, its very disappointing why BMW got rid of F650GS it's a great bike and delivers wonderfully. I wish we could raise a petition and convince them to make 650's again.
So many smaller engines.on the offer now. I think it must be a European emission thing.
I agree , BMW should have kept making this model. This bike is one of my favorites , so much versatility.
Great to be in agreement - I am actually picking up another G650GS tomorrow - red. Very excited. But the sertao takes the cake. Please take a look at the newest video released today about the easy and cheap kickstand mod for the Sertao and Dakar versions to make it longer and more stable. Also, please take a look at the other 650 reviews I did so far which compare other bikes in this class to the KLR - DR650, BMW G and F650GS, and soon coming XR650L by Honda and KTM 625 SXC - and most exciting, the rare G650XChallenge - so please consider subscribing to be informed when those next reviews come out - thanks for being here. @@pegasusmotorcycletours Looooved your comprehensive review ... the best yet Ive seen, for ANY bike 👍 youre looking towards xchallenge... seriously look for an xmoto... inverted forks, 10" of travel & less vulnerable plastics, I personally feel the 19" front with a 120/90 is much better for adventure gravel roads & even forestry type terrain, a bigger footprint... I really believe the market has been con'd into following motox trends without exploring othersetups... look seriously at a g650xmoto... cheers from NZ
@@Errol.C-nz Thanks so much for the comment and for watching. Please stay tuned for more 650 ADV bike reviews (3 more are in the garage waiting their turn). The next review dropping two Saturdays from now is an overview of my current garage including 9 bikes so I hope you stick around and please consider subscribing to get notified. I appreciate your suggestion however that bike is so hard to find. I own the Xchallenge and the hardest part is finding luggage and an aux fuel tank for it. That is the only negative thus far - rare machines with too few accessories. Great to have you here - Nik

@@pegasusmotorcycletours awesome man I just got a f650 Gs here in Brazil your videos have helped me make that decision.
Brilliant video. Its just confirmed my decision yesterday when I bought a 2012 G650GS
Congratulations. May it serve you long and well. Thanks for being here and participating in the conversation. Cheers. Nik
Great video! I have a 2007 F650 GS but love the Dakar/Sertão. Unfortunately they are a bit too tall for me. I do like the more angular styling of the G650GS/Sertão more than the curvy F650 (and also the black painted engine), so a G650GS with my spoked F650GS wheels would be the perfect bike for me.
Thanks for sharing your videos/reviews!
Greetings and thanks for being here and for participating in the conversation. BMW made another street oriented, belt driven motorcycle on this base. If you are looking for something more modern/angular looking with this engine - take a look at the Pegaso Trail by Aprilia, or the Husqvarna Strada (or Terra). I'll be reviewing those when I find them. I look forward to hearing from you in future videos. Cheers - Nik
Great review. A bit of a love story.
I wanted the Sertao for many years but was between bikes. I decided to buy myself a bike for my 60th birthday and a used Sertao was definitely a contender. I no longer ride hard off road so I wanted an ADV bike for back roads and mild off road. I bought a new G310GS and despite your disparaging comments, it's the bike for me. I seldom ride on highways but it'll do 70 MPH all day. It's lighter than the G650GS, it has six gears, a gear indicator, a fuel gauge, a large and very sturdy rear rack and tubeless tires. Shifting is very smooth. I wish BMW made a G310GS Adventure with another 1.5 to 2.0 gallons of fuel (my biggest complaint), tubeless spoke wheels, and maybe another inch of suspension travel to be the same as the G650GS and maybe full rebound and preload adjustments on the suspension front and back.
I think a 450 cc single cylinder bike is probably the sweet spot for lightweight adventure touring. I'm a big guy but I don't carry much gear. I carry a 66 liter roll top duffel bag on the pillion and rear rack so there's no aerodynamic drag on the road and nothing to catch on rocks and trees off road, however the bike does tip all the way to the ground when dropped so it's more difficult to lift.
Thanks so much for sharing. I've no experience with the 310 bit plenty others experiences with smaller adv bikes such as the Himalayan, the DRZ, the crf250 etc. So, fair to say you don't carry camping gear? Do Y u.camp on your adventures?
@@pegasusmotorcycletours - As I mentioned, I carry a 66 liter roll top waterproof duffel on the rear rack and pillion. It's not mounted across the rack and hanging over panniers as is common. I don't have panniers. The duffel bag is mounted longitudinally and doesn't hang off the side of the bike.
As my channel name suggests, I do ultralight motorcycle camping, but I'm not roughing it like some people who travel light with a ground pad, blanket and tarp. I'm actually camping comfortably, but without a lot of the stuff many motorcycle campers pack, such as a coffee press, air mattress inflator, a large roll bag of kitchen "essentials", an ice chest, a drone for aerial photography, etc. My channel is just getting started but I recently uploaded a video demonstrating how I camp and showing the motorcycle fully loaded. It's just the one duffel bag. Feel free to scrub through the video to skip the riding to see the camping. The video title is "Solo Motorcycle Camping In The Daniel Boone National Forest".
I've always ridden small dual sport thumpers but now that I'm 62 years old I *really* don't want a heavy bike. Many older guys are downsizing to keep riding. I'm 6'2" (188 cm) and I weigh 230 pounds (104 kg). The G310GS is a bit small for me but not too bad. I raised the bars 30mm. BMW designed the baby GS for beginners (often young people) and the Asian market, but large adults can ride it. Most of us bought it for back roads, gravel roads, dirt roads and mild off road but there are a few videos on TH-cam showing the G310GS doing hard off road and doing it surprisingly well but I'd recommend swapping the alloy rims for spoke wheels and maybe beefier suspension for hard off road use. The baby GS is certainly more comfortable and capable on the road than my small dual sports were.
The baby GS does well enough on highways on the few occasions I'm on highways. It has no trouble hauling me and my camping gear up steep hills, on or off road. I ride with friends and they aren't waiting for me, although admittedly I have the throttle pinned when climbing steep roads. It's fun to ride a slow bike fast. I'm full throttle sometimes and I do more shifting to get the most out of the 34 HP... but the G650GS is only 50 HP or a little less? It's not all that much difference. Not like the guys doing the Trans America Trail on Honda Trail 125 bikes.
At this stage in my life, the G310GS is far from being the limiting factor in my adventures.
Fantastic! I will be on the lookout for a BMW G650GS Sertao!! Thanks you for all the great detail AND engaging film footage!
Tha ks for watching and for the support. Glad you found it useful. I've reviewed every other competitor in This class so happy hunting.
Dude I'm sold! Just gotta force my wife to also watch this whole video!
You intend on touring two up I take it? It's a good bike for that actually. Of road capabilities will be impacted so if you're touring mostly on asphalt then I dare say the 1200 would do a better job but this is a phenomenal bike. Thanks for watching. A new video drops this Saturday, an overview of my ten bikes and how viewers can own them. Hope to see you there. Nik
After looking for a reason to switch to BMW from H-D, this video nails it! Thank you! 👍

Truly great review. Very very nicely done, and extremely thorough. I took notes and screenshots. Very impressed. So refreshing to listen to someone who’s sincere, speaking from real experience, and not hyping everything up and begging for fame.
I also hugely respect that you replied to my comments twice. I can count on one hand the number of people who I know I would be happy to ride with in remote areas. I prefer to ride alone. You’re one of them bro.

Purely a passion project for me helping me make use of the old footage, as a sort of a diary, and in the process helping me teach and LEARN - learning is the main benefit so I am glad you find the videos useful. Thanks for being here and participating in the conversation. Please be sure to check out my kickstand hockey puck mod video for this bike - it really needs it. Cheers - Nik
Pegasus Motorcycle Tours & Consulting I did bro. It’s a great idea. The only things I might do differently are use stainless bolts and nuts, and possibly put the bolts pointing upwards, with the nuts on top.
There’s probably not a huge advantage to this, except that you eliminate the risk of the bolt ends coming into contact with the floor.
The advantage of stainless bolts is obvious, even though it’s unlikely that you’re going to need to remove the puck in the future. But the capacity for those few threads exposed to the elements for years, to cause untold issues in the future, is simply off the scale. I like to plan for such eventualities.
For the same reason I used to fit long brass exhaust stud nuts. I’m going to start doing that again.
Exhaust studs have got smaller in diameter over the years. And when they snap off JUST INSIDE the threaded hole in an alloy head... not funny. Not even close.
The advantage of brass is that it’s a different material from the stud, and it’s slightly softer. So even if the exposed threads of the stud corrode, it won’t have corroded TO the nut.
Also, using a brass nut that’s twice as long as a conventional nut means that the stresses are evened out over more threads, there’s a greater surface area upon which to grip with whatever tools are available in an emergency, and there’s less likelihood of threads actually being exposed! 🧐
I’m not sure who does long brass exhaust stud nuts these days. I’m just typing my 62 year old brain farts into my phone - in the spirit of sharing collected wisdom. If I cannot find any on eBay, I may just have to make some.
Ride safe my friend
Peace
Pegasus Motorcycle Tours & Consulting These are all I can find on UK eBay:
MG MGF TF MGTF Exhaust Catalyst Nut LONG BRASS improved ESR2034
They are UNF or some other imperial threat I think. I tended for classic cars, ie cars that were new the year I left school...!
Anyway, hexagonal brass stock is available, so all we need is a lathe, the correct drills, some good taps, and patience. Tapping brass is a slow and tricky process. It’s very easy to advance too far without backing out to clear the swarf.
Now I’m thinking this is a perfect job for a CNC lathe.
Back to eBay 🧐😎😜
Hi again (ps, thanks for that last part you said btw) I hope all is well with you and yours. I made a subsequent tutorial for an easy and quick upgrade to the short kickstand problem. I hope you find it useful. th-cam.com/video/_I4Rwf-a9y4A/w-d-xo.htmllso, tomorrow I am supposed to pick up the Husqvarna Terra, which share the same engine, and with the upcoming reviews of my Honda XR650L and my KTM 625SXC, those three upcoming reviews will complete the entire class on this channel. Pegasus Motorcycle Tours & Consulting Hi Nik, thank you. Yep, I enjoyed your stand mod video very much.
The Husqvarna Terra is another very rare bike I’ve never seen here in the UK. And only made for two years? Crazy. It’s interesting for many reasons. One is the fact that it’s quoted as putting out 58hp, whereas the BMWs are rated at 50hp. I wonder what’s different. Stage 1 cams, high compression piston, and larger inlet valves plus engine management that allows another 1000rpm possibly. I wonder how that affects reliability and fuel consumption. I hope not much. That’s a nice looking bike. Baby Nuda style.
This is how rare they are in the UK, an exhaust system is for sale on eBay for £627. But there are apparently no bikes for sale here! Most are in Italy and Germany.
You should have fun with this one. Looking forward to your review.
Great review! What do you think about the Husqvarna Terra 650? same engine as the GS650.
Thank you. I had a chance to pick one up but it wasn't significantly different from what I had in the garage to make it appealing. The huskies have even fewer aftermarket options so it's a niche really.
I just found a low mileage one of these at an impound automotive tow yard with extremely low miles for $2,900. It's a few hours away from me, but I'm hoping to check it out soon..
Sounds fantastic assuming it wasn't crashed.
enthralling, well done buddy great video
Then you. I've also reviewed my challenge if you are curious at how they compare.
What an amazing review brother. Liked and suscribed. I wish I lived there, here in South Fl all we have is sand and straight roads. Thank you for your time

You'd love the sertao in that case. I ride the KTM 790 and don't miss my BMWs but the sertao was special, and great looking. Thanks for sharing.
Could you link, or list the part number for the foot pegs!? Or if it doesn’t matter what year KLR they came from?
The are tusk pegs for the KLR. 2nd Gen Klr.
Hey mate- am quiet stuck between two 650 bikes, and seeing as you are extremely experienced in the ADV field, would be great and also greatly appreciated to have your possible input. Essentially, I want to do motorbike weekend camping, but at the same time do some highway/trail riding. Nothing major, but my main purpose is to get out into nature for relaxation and better mental health/clearing of the mind. My two options currently are the DR650 and the BMW G650GS Sertao. I can find both at reasonable prices here in Australia, albeit the DR650 is a tad/bit harder to come across, usually they also have higher kms and are more older etc. I was also considering a drz400 (saw one in the background of this video in your backyard I am pretty sure at 16:44) but pretty sure I have decided against it due to it lacking a 6th gear (which I think you need on highways) and it seeming way less solid/built than it's brother the DR650.
Thank you so much,
Eman
Hello Eman. Thank you for your inquiry. I've reviewed both the Dr and the DRZ. It seems the DRZ will not be your best choice, and of you can score a sertao, I'd go that route since they retain their value better and come with amenities such as ABS, heated grips, etc.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Thank you for your input! Much appreciated!
Nick, Great review! I am looking forward to your next one (X-Challenge)!
Cheers!
Thank you thank you - glad you found it useful! Great to have you as part of this awesome and growing community.
Found it...G450X was a neat machine. Seen one in Wyoming in 2014. The people weren't at their trailer and we had to leave. Didn't get to talk to the owner.
That's even a rarer bike - I own the 650XChallenge, and there were three iterations of it. The Country and Xmoto. Amazing bikes all three. I've never seen the 450 in person.
Cool. Didn't know there was a 650 that looked like the 450x.
I just had a klr stolen from me before I even got to use it. And now I'm looking at a dakar this week. Pretty stoked after seeing this video.
Sorry to hear that - hopefully the insurance takes care of you - you will love the Dakar in comparison - simply more dirt worthy, with some of the more modern amenities. Best of luck to you!
Wow, I was so pleasantly surprised when you said "zdravo i dobro dosli.." Nevertheless you make great videos about my favourite line of GS bikes ever, the 650. Being a huge fan of the same line ( I have a fully customized 2000 F650 GS Dakar) I could appreciate the videos content. Thank you so much and keep it coming, great videos.
Hvala hvala i dobrodosao. Where are you writing from? Thanks for being here - three more reviews form the 650 class are upcoming so I hope you stick around In fact I am picking up a Husqvarna Terra tomorrow which shares the same engine, so I am excited to learn more about the bike.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours Hvala tebi i bolje te nasao! I am living in British Columbia, Canada. Awesome province for adventure riding. Hvala za videa tebra super su i sve najbolje! Uzivaj! Dragan
I just posted this question on your KRL review, but figured I'd post it here, as it applies here too I guess, but mostly cause I thought it might increase the likelihood you'd see it and reply lol.
Hey there. First off you're videos are great and massively insightful and helpful. I'm just buying my first bike, and I've found a 2015 krl650 and a bmw g650gs around me, the ladder being a hundred cheaper (and also inspired by this video to search for before going through with the klr). which one should a beginner go for? I've never ridden at all. I want to mainly commute and have a sturdy mostly road worthy commuting/traveling bike, but I'm also going for dual sport/adventure cause I'd of course like to do a little light off road and trails eventually. Anyway, you seem to like the bmw more, but if you had to say for a beginner? I do prefer the bmw looks wise. But yeah, your advice would be so appreciated. Thanks again for the great and insightful content.
Thanks for your question. Please see my answer in the original one. Let me know what you decided to go with and how you like your new motorcycle, and most importantly welcome to my channel and to the club. They'll be a ton of useful information for you as a new adventure Rider here on this channel so I hope to hear from you in the near future.
I was just about to buy an F800GSA but stumbled on this bike and now watching reviews. I’ve been riding superbikes for 30 years so the weight and size of the 800 is a bit intimidating. This Sertao might be a better option. I love the look of it.
Yes, excellent bike for the money, and as much weight as one ought to be riding offroad with luggage. It has plenty of power, is simple, durable, and attractive, and holds its value well. Yoy cant go wrong if you snatch it, or even the dakar. Good luck. Ps, stay tuned for three more upcoming reviews of sub 700cc adv bikes including three other thumper 650s. Cheers. Nik
Hi there, is a high mileage Sertao with 55000 km a good buy? How much mileage do you have on your bike so far? You mentioned some more vibrations than the KLR650, could that be a dealbreaker for someone coming from a twin? And do you plan any future mods like lighter exhausts for instance? Have you ridden the Husqvarna TR650? It has the same engine as the Sertao but with 8-10 more horsepower and is said to be also much smoother. Thanks.
Thanks for the question. For me anything over 30k miles on a thumper is getting up there. These are solid engines when taken care of. My klr650 has closer to 40k hard miles so it's not a deal breaker if the bike has been kept well. It's more about the seller and previous owner than the bike for me honestly.
Nice! Great Options!
How did you learn so many languages so well? Which came first - touring or classes?
Thanks for watching. I've had the fortune to live in all the places these languages are spoken. Most of it was through study abroad. Then they all start to look and sounds enough alike to make the next.one easier to learn honestly. Plus I married a Mexican.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Ah! What a great opportunity! But you sound so excellent. Nice to learn while young. I'm waiting for Latin to make a comeback. 🙄I only manage well with French.

I have an F650GS but there is not enough ground clearance so I'm checking out a 2014 Sertao tomorrow. Thx for the review! (Subscribed.)
Thanks so much for that support. I'm very glad to hear my review has been helpful to you. The motorcycle remained unmodified while I had it in my ownership. I ended up selling it to one of my clients who is taking his wife down to Ushuaia. I kept my XChallenge (the last video released was of my current garage if you're curious, 6 out 11 of which are in the adv touring class). It definitely one of my favorites in the class. I'd buy it again if I saw a good one. Thanks again for the support.
This video did it for me. Sertao it is. 2012 with 5400 miles for 4K here in Idaho. Now, what do I do with my Gen 1 KLR that has been so good to me? If I can get my wife to get some of them there boxes outa the garage, there'll be no problem. @71 y.o., I seriously think, I have bought my last bike. I started "Boise Ole' Guys Dual Sport" 21 months ago, so I could have companions for fun and safety. Currently 160 members with few genuine "Ole' Guys" :) Soooo much fun! Terrific video(s) by the way. Thanks Nick
Just realized, I am on "Barb's account"...... Sincerely, Craig
Wow, that is one heck of a deal - I've never seem them sold for that low - good on you - I hope you are loving it. PS - I just released a review of the newest KLR so it's a more direct competitor to the Sertao in case you still decide to return to the familiar. Safe riding and thanks for watching.
Hi Nik. Loved your video. I actually was persuaded to buy a Sertao in order to ride some of the BDRs. However I am now thinking I should go lighter, and am looking at a 2007 BMW X country. I believe you have/had the X Challenge. What do you think is a better bike -the Sertao or X Country?
Hi. Happy new year. In virtue of the weight savings bit more importantly of the suspension, the x country is a more capable bike although it has a smaller front wheel in the front. Still the suspension is of a much better componentry so it would be a better performer. Either bike will retain good value and could be had for about 5 grand. Good luck to you in the search as they are rare bikes. Cheers. Nik
I have a 2014 Sertāo and I absolutely love my bike… don’t see the day that I get rid of it… also bro, where did you get the puck for the side stand? I need it
I made a video about that. Please look through the playlist.
Great bike… Enjoy!! Get out there and make more videos! Looking forward to it 👍
Thanks so much, I appreciate the support.
Great video! Is Sertao less stable on the motorway because of the 21"/ its suspension vs F650GS 19"? Thanks
I didn't notice any drastic differences honestly. The suspensi9n is solid enough to make the wheel dsize difference negligible.
Thank you so much for your response. That's great because Sertao is more appealing to me but my only worry was the stability aspect at higher speeds, especially because my area can get a bit windy. I'm not planning to spend too much time on the motorway but I do want to have that option. So yeah I think I'll give Sertao a go. Thanks again ;)@@pegasusmotorcycletours
One of the best reviews I seen... & Ive seen a LOT!... That 1st "muffler" isn't there just for looks... its a catalytic converter for emissions & a fair bit heavier than the muffler... the twin spark isnt twin plugs, it sparks twice in the ignition cycle again for emissions
Thank you so much for the complement - glad to have you here. If you are considering a 650ADV bike please consider subscribing since 3 more reviews are in the making to complete the playslist. Thanks also for correcting the spark plug comment - readers will be glad to learn about the correction. I really appreciate it. Welcome to my channel and I hope to hear from you again. Nik
@@pegasusmotorcycletours i missed that 👍 & sub'd... PS those star bolts/ screws are "Torx" screws (said like "talks" as in talking🙄)... better than hex head allen head screws... supposedly... its a european thing... look for a g650xmoto if you can, thats my preferred single cyl unicorn bike... the others the seriously underrated tdm900 with yzf450 suspension & tenere'ized with xtz750 tenere fairings etc
But you forget to mention the mighty Aprilia Pegasus Trail (efi), its kinda the same and maybe better (def cheaper) than the BMW F650GS
Great work, cant wait for the next video!
You are very correct - I did forget it. It's easy to forget since it's so hard to encounter these days. I am always looking though so thank you for reminding us all of another awesome thumper (albeit 19inc front). Thanks for being here and for participating in the conversation - Nik

Great review, I've just seen a 2015 come up for sale here in Australia for $7200. I'm seriously thinking about it.
I can't speak about the market there but of it's in good shape and mileage is low, it will always sell.
Posle videa "Sertao-lost opportunity" ovaj prikaz je vrlo osvežavajuć. Greetings from Belgrade!
Dobrodosli! Drago mi je da cujem. Veliki pozdrav iz San Diega!
Looking forward to the X review. This is getting good.
Great to have you hear and I am glad that you find the reviews useful. Be sure to check out my kickstand hockey puck mod video for this bike - it really needs it. Cheers - Nik
Loved your attention to detail... question. I have a 2005 Dakar here in Costa Rica. This year bike the rotax engine still made in Austria correct? I love my bike!
Thank you for watching and for participating in the conversation. I love your country. Yes, the car engine was still produced in Europe at that time. That's going to be always a bike that has solid resale value so if you are satisfied, keep it because they are becoming harder to find. Please stay tuned and consider subscribing to get notified when other adventure touring thumper reviews come live, because with the two I am editing, I will have completed the list in this class so it would offer a great comparison. Cheers.
very thorough and informative review, thanks!
Thanks for watching. I've reviewed nearly every 650 thumper adv bike in case you are comparing.
Thanks for the review. I picked up a 2013 Sertao last saturday. Really enjoying it so far and looking forward to getting into adv riding.
Congratulations and welcome to the channel. You've got one of the best bikes for both beginners and serious Adventure touring Riders. And you are on the right channel because it is devoted for all things Adventure touring, among other motorcycling lifestyle and reviews. Other videos in the making are how to pack, how to plan routes, and more 650 Adventure touring motorcycle reviews. The next one coming out this weekend will be about the bikes I have in my garage at the moment. I try to keep things different and entertaining while always educational and honest on this channel, and I welcome you. Please do consider subscribing to be formed when other videos come out. In the meantime one video you should definitely review is the BMW 650 hockey puck side stand modification. This is a tutorial to help you modify the very short side stand in an economical and quick way oh, so that the bike is more stable and upright. Another video on this channel I can recommend is the f650gs review because it's a predecessor to your motorcycle, and that review has lots of useful information that applies. Be well until the next one. Congrats on an awesome bike once more. Nick
Great video!
That's a good trick, show a super cool bike at the end of the video and peak my interest in the X-Challenge. Looks like it has a tall seat height. Looking forward to the review on it. Congrats on the new bike.
Thank you Thank you. Yeah, that's why it pays to watch till the end ;) The X challenge is such an awesome Bike. Suspension to rival that of the drz400, no limits really to where this bike can take you. Light, agile, powerful, modern with efi and abs, etc. Looking first to fi ishinguo that review. Be well in the meantime Ed. Thanks for being here.
Solid review. The one muffler, that is closed off is actually the catalyst.
Shocked to hear someone say the 650 Rotax isn’t smooth. I find it incredibly smooth for a single. Spend some time on an older 690! 🤮
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to participate in the conversation. Yes I do realize the other side is the muffler and other side is the catalyst but it seems like there's at least half of it that is not being utilized. I think they created it's that way for a aesthetic purposes, then again hot air passing through limits what is could be used for. It was just an idea of mine that I hope gets implemented for 4 ADV bikes to have secret compartments. Be well and see you in the next review.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours 100% done that way for aesthetics.
Hey hows it going brother this is a great video please help me out! BMW G650GS SERTAO 2013 19,000 KMS (11,800 MILES) OR KLR 650 2016 18K miles? Which one would you guys choose? I live in Peru and believe this the best I can find for my price range!
Saludos. Sertao, for sure. Aside from part availability where you live, it's a better bike all around so nice it has lower mileage and it retains it's called e due to rarity.
I was looking at the DR650 then I came across this video. The Sertáo looks pretty sweet. Would you recommend this over the DR?
Thanks for watching. The DR is lighter and more for calendar but overall I love the sertao. More powerful, better on the highway, with amenities such as heated grips and abs, plus the looks!
Thanks for the reply! I bought a Certao today.
The left ‘dummy muffler’ is your catalytic converter. The right is the actual muffler. Keep both. Both are good!
hahaha good point! I realize the left muffler is put to use, but there is still quite a few inches of cylindrical potential storage space that would be perfect as a hidden compartment for ADV touring ( if heat proofed) BMW could have made that rear portion of the left can accessible, if anything for a tool kit - hidden, waterproof, inconspicuous storage space would be a great thing to add to any ADV touring motorcycle. Glad to have you here - thanks for participating in the conversation. I also released a video in the first week of this year showing what exciting reviews are coming in 2021 - th-cam.com/video/ydQ1LMAFiVI/w-d-xo.html
I hope to hear from you in the future. Cheers - Nik
Reckon they got rid of the 650 for emissions reasons. 2 cylinders generally have better emissions. great video, I'm looking to get one of these.
I reckon you are right. I think they started competing against themselves, and there was a general push toward bigger, more techy adv bikes which is now starting to get reversed finally.
The original BMW F650 (aka the "Funduro") which was a sister to the Aprilla Pegaso also had dual carbs.
You are rifht - 2 mikuni carbs for the F650GS from 1994-2000. I suppose a more appropriate comparison on my end would have been with the more modern Pegaso Trail model - thanks for being part of the conversation.
Just discovered your channel, great reviews and great content. Greatings from México!!!
Welcome and glad to habe you. Please spread the word, and check out the last video from a few days ago, filmed in Mexico, of the Honda nc700x. Saludos y gracias por su apoyo. Nikola
Great Video, I just found a 2006 BMW GS 650 Dakar that I am buying. What is your opinion on that bike? I am 52yo and this is my 1st dual sport bike, I have ridden Harleys for years and some dirt bikes. The bike seems to be in great shape.
Thank in advance
Hi there. The Dakar is an excellent machine that also maintains it's value due to its rarity and appeal. Not much other than aesthetics are different between it and the Sertao. And that is mainly the front end of the bike. I did a full review of that older generation of F650GS so please taker a look - it isn't a Dakar, but the information will apply. Congrats -you will love it. Let me know if you have any questions in this world of ADV touring. Best - Nik

As your other two videos I just watched lately (KLR vs DR, and both vs 650GS), this is another great and valuable one. Muito brigado Nick!
About the best "adv bike" verdict:
1. How are maintainance costs mainly estás G650 Sertão, and the XChallenge?
2 Are this 2 BMWs loaded with lots high tech aids, like their bigger brothers??
3. BMW is known for very expensive parts and maintanance, and what about engine and general mechanic reliability?
4. Which online stores in the USA you recommend for looking "used* bikes?
Thanks. Best!
Thanks so much. The XChallenge is a rare bike so any parts are hard to find. Most notably the cush drives that are no longer in production. The luggage carriers and engine guard is also difficult to source. Otherwise same.rotax engine.
2. Both have the same tech, nothing too crazy, switchable abs and some may have heated grips. the x challenge does have an air shock in the rear though.
3. Yes BMWs are know for expensive repairs but unlike the big brother these are simple.machikes and the engine is very reliable.
4. Cycle trader, smart cycle guide, Craigslist, fb marketplace, offer up. Happy hunting.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Many thanx!!!
I have the predecessor to the Sertão (03 Dakar) and I have only two major gripes. I find the foot pegs to be too far forward to be comfortable when I'm out of the saddle for long periods of time. My second gripe is with the buzzy engine - if I am on pavement for several hours it becomes really uncomfortable.
As far as the clunky gearbox and false neutrals, that's just BMW being BMW from my experiences.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I've never owned the Dakar. I see them every now and again on the market and they hold their value well. The thumpers are always too buzzy for my taste, I prefer s twin.
The left can isn’t a dummy, it’s the catalytic converter.
I have a Dakar and absolutely love it, had an ‘09 800GS first and would never go back.
Thanks for taking the time to clarify that. I appreciate it. Others have pointed out the mistake so I have finally taken that part out so as not to share incorrect information. I appreciate it very much.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours a slip-on single muffler saves about 8.5-9lbs 😊
Excellent review. How does this model compare to the older dakar model
Hi there. It is basically the same motorcycle, to be very honest, aside form the aesthetics mostly noticeable in the front end. The rear subframe is entirely the same, dimension wise, so much so that luggage racks and carriers are for the most part interchangeable. I review the F650GS as well so please take a look at that to get more insights into their differences and similarities. I have reviewed most of the 650 ADV thumpers on this channel, so please take a look through my videos - I find the BMW Sertao to be a very worth competitor to most of them. I also still have in my garage waiting to get reviewed the Honda XR650L and KTM SXC 625, as well as the BMW XChallenge. Also, some great news, Kawasaki invited me to their press release and extended review of the new KLR being release later this year so stick around for that and please consider subscribing to be informed when these come out. Weight of the big GS’s is not an issue in Europe , because 90% of all GS’s in Europe never leave the tarmac. I have a Yamaha XT660r adventure bike ,also lightweight, single cylinder, fuel injected.. very good off-road bike( unfortunately it’s never sold in the U.S.)
Very true. I know what you mean. I gubljenje that's true for all GS bike sold around the world honestly.
Hey Nick, such a great review! I think I must have watched it 20 times and it was the decider for me to pick up a 2015 Sertao about a year ago. Have had some great rides already and I have some exciting adventures planned ahead here in Australia. Did you end up modifying the bash plate set up and adding any crash bars? If yes, what did you go with
Cheers Cameron
Hello Cameron. Thanks so much for that support. I'm very glad to hear my review has been helpful to you. The motorcycle remained unmodified while i had it in my ownership. I ended up selling it too one of my clients who is taking his wife down to Ushuaia. I kept my XChallenge (the last video released was of my current garage if you're curious, 6 out 11 of which are in the adv touring class). Why do you think you should upgrade the bag plate? Crash bars would be a wise addition but the bash plate would be last on my list since it comes with an aluminum one already. I just painted mine black to better match the Sretao. Thanks again for the support.
Thanks for the reply. The x country sold before I could get to it, so I will keep my Sertao. It is a bit tall for me, so I am getting a Seat Concepts seat to bring it down a bit, and will be putting the pucks on the kickstand to help with the kickstand issue. So far I love the bike. Happy New Year!
Give this bike a shot, get to know it a little bit and then if you decide to change you'll always be able to sell it easily. I also made a tutorial video about the hockey puck mod for this bike in particular. Looking forward to hear your impressions of the new seat
I have 2 pucks on mine.

Hey man great video! I ask for some advice. For a new dirt rider is the f 650 gs (2003) plenty for me or should I spend a little more for the Dakar?
Thanks for being here and for the question. The F is plenty for a new dirt rider, but if you have a chance to snatch a Dakar or Sertao, you will not be disappointment because dirt riding is more enjoyable on that machine, if getting more comfortable on dirt is your ultimate goal. They hold their value better as well and are rarer, so it's a wise investment. Good luck!
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Hey man thanks for taking the time out to write back to me. The advice makes sense to me, in Italy where I live I've seen that the 650 GS is popular and there are plenty of examples. The hunt begins for the Dakar version. Best wishes for your future travels 🏍️🏞️ Rob.
Would you take the Sertao on a round the world trip (like through out of the way the Stans etc)? I have the option of picking one up to AUD$7k (29,000kms) and was thinking of gearing it up for my upcoming RWT but was curious about maintenance in out of the way places.
I would probably prefer to take the dr650 or the xr650l for their inconspicuous looks, better we off road capability, lighter weight, and cheaper and easier maintenance in distant places. The dr I sold 3 years ago to a surfer just return after 70k miles of touring the Americas. I'll be setting up a N even where he speaks (you can see Gene in my review of the dr.) Another client I'm training now wants to do exactly the same thing woth a surfboard and also bought a Dr. Gene has no regrets about taking the Dr.
Thanks Nic - funnily I’ve also been looking into the DR though never considered the XR (which I’ll start looking into as a comparison between the two). I’ve seen a RWT vlog with the DR and it seemed bullet proof (and inconspicuous as you say).
Very informative video. Thanks for your sharing. Enjoy !

Have you had any issues with the sub frame breaking with the large pannier weight? I just fitted 40 ly panniers and a little concerned about the sub frame flex
I have not, but that is a serious concern depending how much you are carrying. You should never overload the bike past the recommendations by BMW, and never try to do any kind of shock loading from jumps when loaded with luggage or passenger. The subframe was a prticularily week on the other 650GS - the cross challenge, so much so that Touratech had an aftermarket steel subframe for purchase. The last year of production BMW changed the material to a stronger one, and those were found in the yellow cross country g650GS bikes. I do think the Sertao subframe is a bit beefier, but your point is valid and I have not had any negative personal experiences with this bike and that point. Thanks for watching.
Great video what tank bag do have on the bike please.
Thanks for watching. Glad you liked it. This is a motocentric tank bag. I talk about it when I review my klr650
Fantastic review! The Sertao is definitely one of the best do-it-all motorcycles I have ever ridden. Thanks for the tips on the KLR foot pegs and shifters working on the Sertao! I have been watching for a folding shifter and that will help!
I've very excited to see your review of the X-Challenge and see how you think it compares to the Sertao. Do you have a time frame planned for that review?
I'm very glad you found the video helpful

first time rider, would love this for my first bike, however these don't seem to be sold by anyone anywhere. I'll probably just go with the standard g 650 gs not the sertao version.

I’m 6’4” I’m not sure if this bike fits me. Any experience with taller guys on the Sertao?
It's should for you well. Us shorter guys have the troubles not so much the tall ones
Hey pegasus. You gave me some advice a few weeks ago which was very helpful and nice of you. Had a new question if you get the chance. So i leaned over on my new used 2012 bmw g650gs without realizing i didnt have the kick down. Bike fell and the clutch lever on the handle was bent out from the handle. Its still working the same but i havent been able to check all the gears cause i’m still learning and practicing in my driveway in first gear. But everything seems okay. However, where the clutch meets the housing (where you can see the cable) there seems to be a little more slack than before. And theres also some wobble up and down as if the housing holding the clutch has widened a bit. Tried tightening it to no avail. Ordered new clutch and i hope that solves most of it. My question is is this a serious problem and could I have done damage to the cable, insides, or clutch operating system of the bike? Is that wobble room fixable without getting new housing on top of the new clutch i ordered? Any insight would again be awesome. Anyway, love your content thanks for making great and helpful vids.
Hi there. Thanks for your question. The clutch cable can be adjusted in two different places, basically on both ends. You can adjust it with the wheel up top connected to the lever, and then you can adjust it at the bottom by the clutch housing itself. So on both ends of the cable. Because cables scratch, manufacturers install them with this in mind so that you can have the proper amount of freeplay. Play is measured by pulling the clutch in slightly, until you finally start to feel pressure. I'm talking minute inmortal pressure until resistance is felt. There should be around 2 to 3 millimeters of FreePlay at the clutch lever, where the lever is connected to the cable and touches the resting plate. It's normally two or three mm, but every bike is different so please check your manual. This is super easy and can be adjusted while you are riding even. If this is not enough to get to the desired Spec's, you can adjust the clutch cable at the Bottom by the clutch plate itself. Free play is very important to maintain in Spec because if it isn't, your clutch cable is not adjusted properly and it might be engaging the clutch the whole time you are riding. What happens then is the clutch gets burned, expands while it's overheating, and suddenly you lose it mid ride and you can't make it home cause you can't engage the gears. This is called clutch slippage. Then you have to replace the clutch plates which is a big job. So maintaining proper cable free play is crucial to longevity of your clutch itself. But You can't really mess up the gears if you drop the bike on the lever, the most you can damage is the lever itself. I highly doubt you can even damage the cable in this way. The levers are meant to bend or break the tips off so that you are still able to ride home. So don't be alarmed, you didn't make any additional damage to the vehicle by simply breaking the lever. If you want to have a fresh look, feel free to replace that lever. It's good to learn and it's an easy job. Keep your old bent lever as a reserve for potential touring trips. And what I always do is I buy another Reserve clutch cable, and I run it alongside the existing cable, and zip tie then together without obviously connecting it in either end. This way if my clutch cable snaps while I'm on the road, I have another one to replace it which its not taking any space in my luggage. You can do something similar with your foot controls, and break lever. I hope this helps, feel free to ask if you have more questions. And don't be afraid to tackle this yourself because it is simple and it's good to know. Good luck.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours right on. thanks again for the response. pretty dumb follow up question, but specs means specifications? also, how can i be sure the clutch is properly adjusted and not constantly engaged like you were talking about? is there a definitive way to make sure? just check if theres those couple mm's of freeplay and that'll mean that its generally adjusted properly right? i see the adjuster further down the clutch. at like the second bend, if that makes sense. its a circle with 3 settings. i have that adjuster set to 1. which seems to be the least amount of slack. but i'll have to look for the other adjuster spot you're referring to.
i plan to get it looked at by a mechanic just in general when i get some more savings again. but for now i wanna do my best to make sure its not in danger of getting damaged in any way cause i also don't have any repair money at the moment. the extra clutch handle is all i could afford right now as far as repairs go. so i appreciate your help. and i do definitely plan to replace it myself when the spare clutch comes. and i'll definitely save the old one. but yeah how can i make sure theres no slippage occurring. just as long as theres the little bit of freeplay right?
Do you have any opinion on the regular G650GS, not the Sertao?
Yes I do. Check out my playlist, O have reviewed it here along with every other 650 adv thumper on the market. Cheers.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours thanks, but I was asking for the version of the G650GS with the same looks as this one, but with the lower seat and without spoked wheels.
Maybe BMW introduced the 310 for the Indian and other Asian markets? After all it's being built in India. I assume the 650s didn't sell well enough since most Western BMW customers are status conscious and go for the top of the line GS. The 650 was for the real adventure riders, but they are probably too low in numbers overall to be profitable for BMW.
For desert riding wouldn't it be safer to use soft luggage instead of hard cases?
I think you're or Theory makes perfect sense period and then any case the flagship 1250 DMX the company a lot more money then a cheaper 650 that can easily be by outsold by the dealership for the 750 or 850. But a shame to loose it nonetheless. And to answer your question about luggage, yes it most certainly makes more sense to ride with soft bags in heart conditions where one more very likely have a hard crash. However my riding is is usually very calm and collected since I ride alone typically and can't afford to do anything foolish. So if I do crash in the Sand the hard bags make it easier to pick the bike up up and and the ground is soft enough not to damage them in the first place. I also try my hardest not to crash for the same reasons mentioned above. And since I ride alone and need to be fully self sufficient, the amoint of gear I need to carry qould be diffocult to fit into soft bags. I will do a review of these moose enegeneering expedition sode cases as well, but thank you for being here and for yoyr comment. Cheers. Nik
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Thanks for your answer. Really appreciate your videos.
you said 17L tank and my catalog shows 14L,which one is correct??
Hi! 14 liter usable, 3.8 reserve = about 17.
Just a comment: Here in Denmark the explanation for having both the 310GS og the 700/750/800 is that the new 310GS is only 55% of the price for a new 750GS .... So price is not irrelevant ;-)
No doubt, compared to the larges bikes in the GS line the price must be a significant difference. But considering the lack of performance, for that same or similar cash a 650 would have been more warranted, don't you think? Similar weight and loads more usable power. And the 310 is by no means a steal money wise, since it still carries the BMW badge which comes with its own upcharge. I actually am of the opinion it has more to do with licensing - many European, Latin American and Asian nations have limits on which bikes one can learn and start on, and costs of import rise significantly with size of engine. Some countries like Iran also have sometimes tight restrictions on what kinds of bikes one can ride in with foreign plates, and typically the large cc motorbikes suffer these sanctions. I might be wrong, but ñ 310 is just not enough bike for the US, AUS and dare I say your local highways? But all that is definitely merely an opinion as I have no experience.with the 310. My next review will be of the Himalayan 411 and the lack of performance on that thing is dismal. I hope you time in for that review. It's probably the most disapproving one on TH-cam. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.

I would agree. They are difficult to find and higher in price for all these reasons. However Kawasaki recently revealed that the new improved KLR will hit the US market later this year. I have many reviews of 650 thumpers on my channel, as well as other relevant topics, so I hope you consider subscribing to be notified when the other 3 reviews in the 650 category still remaining (XR650, Xchallenge, and SXC625), including the new KLR650 (in conversation with Kawasaki right now to get my hands on one). The next one coming out this weekend is an interesting interview with a life long rider towing a camper behind his gold wing. Safe travels and till next time - Nik
Thanks for your review of that bike, quite interesting ! I just discovered Tusk parts, it can be very nice for my f650gs Dakar 2003. Do you know about compatibility for the gear selector ? Can't find anything on their website, even for the g650gs Sertao. Thanks, and i wish you good health !
Yes, great products overall. I think Rocky mountain powersports is their main retailer although I am not quite sure on that. They don't seem to produce specifically for bmw motorcycles, however some stuff made for the DR and KLR fits perfectly on the GS. I can't speak for more items aside of the few mentioned in the video.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Thank you very much ! So, the KLR shift lever should fit on my f650gs Dakar, as it's the same engine as your Sertao, nice ! Do you recommend the standard length or +10mm ? Now I'll have to import it to Europe and find a folding brake pedal too ...
@@YannQuentel Your question cut short at " Do you recommend the..." Yes, in my experience, the Tusk lever that was marketed for the KLR also fit on the Sertao, albeit, with the caveat that it sticks out a bit more. I found this a bit undesirable since you don't want the levers to catch on anything or hit the ground after a fall. It looks fine, and it does have the pivot, but so does the stock KLR lever. So that is what I can tell you, albeit I can't speak if the new production of Tusk lever meant for the Kawasaki will also fit the Sertao like mine did. I would be hesitant to confirm since I am not privy to that info. I hope this helps.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours yes it helps a lot, the exact information I was looking for. Thanks !
@@YannQuentel Great. Let me know if other questions come up. Happy searching.
I think the motor was assembled in China from German parts not the other way around. I have one of these. They are great bikes. The negatives are the lean from the side stand, the rear ABS is aggressive off road but can be turned off, the chrome on the front forks is quite thin. The left muffler is the catalytic converter. I agree about the stock footpegs. The stock bars are weak and are best off replaced.
I might have mixxed my words on that one, thanks for pointing that out. I know what you mean about the stock kick stand - I found a great, 10 dollar solution to that and I made a video of that job - quick and easy improvement while keeping your stock kickstand. That video is set to go and will come out this tomorrow so I hope you check it out and it proves helpful to you. I have three more bikes in the garage waiting for their reviews in the same 650 thumper class so please stay tuned and consider subscribing to be informed when that comes out. We just released a new video listing all the reviews coming up in 2021 so please take a look. Cheers - Nik
I hope all is well with you and yours. I made a subsequent tutorial for an easy and quick upgrade to the short kickstand problem. I hope you find it useful. th-cam.com/video/_I4Rwf-a9y4/w-d-xo.html Also, tomorrow I am supposed to pick up the Husqvarna Terra, which share the same engine, and with the upcoming reviews of my Honda XR650L and my KTM 625SXC, those three upcoming reviews will complete the entire class on this channel. I hope to hear form you in future videos, and in the meantime, safe travels! Nik
Excellent video
Glad you found it valuable. Nik
I wouldn't compare standard F650GS to Sertao, more to Dakar version, as they are both the more off-road versions. The only thing I don't like about Sertao is the fuel capacity. Why did they cut the capacity with a more off-road version?! Wiki says normal has 17 litres when Sertao only 14…
Thanks for sharing. The Dakar is showing its age while the sertao keeps looking great.
Hi Nick, looking forward to your review on the X Challenge - is it far away? Tx Jason
Hello hello. Its still in the making and I dont have an eta but definitely in the next two months is my goal. I've been in Europe, balkans, scouting this summer so I have lots of footsge to sift through. I appreciate your patience and support. Greetings from the artistic coast-some of the best and most exciting riding ever.
The reason why your muffler has dual sides is because one side is a catalytic converter, they do it to pass emission standards
Thanks for that info. Another viewer commented a while back with that same information. I appreciate you taking the time. Greetings from San Diego.
Sjajan video,super motor,al ovaj X na kraju je fenomenalan!👍
Da, oba su izezetno dobre opcije za ovo sto mi radimo. Ali ipak me je odusevio X - Mogo mocnije motor. Hvala druze pa do sledece.
I notice its got the black engine, are they the china assembled engines?
Correct. Good observation
sounds like a great bike. I dont know if they were ever made for the Canadian market , where I live.
Hi - thanks for being here. Yes absolutely - there is typically little difference between US and Canadian offerings. They are typically batched together in the North American market offerings. The Sertão was available only in the Aura white and Arroyo blue paint, at a Canadian price of $10,250 in 2018.
It's my understanding, 650 singles are disappearing because they are difficult to make meet emissions.
Yes that's true. Especially the carburated ones.
Do the seats swap between the Sertao and the F650GS? Looking for a lower seat option.
They do (or should*) since the frame and tank is the same. I believe the lowest OEM option is around 30-31 inches. I am not sure there is a difference between seats of the Regular f650GS and G650GS. Good luck.
Are the ring clamps that hold the shock remote reservoir to the frame proprietary? I can't find them anywhere. A standard ring clamp is too wide for the slot in the cradle.
I'm looking at the shot at 12:12
Hi. Try a specialty hardware store like ACE (they have a wider selection than the big box stores like Lowes or Home Depot).
As always amazing videos
Thank you again for being here and for participating in the conversation. Three more 650thumper reviews are in the making so I look forward to hearing from you then. Be well in the meantime- Nik
The BMW Sertao, with very low km or the new Himalayas, will be your pick?
I have reviewed the old himalayan, and it was not a positive experience. You can see that in the playlist. BMW any day, all day, any year, any mileage over the Himalayan.
@pegasusmotorcycletours I was thinking about the hew Himalayan, but deep inside I think that the beemer will be better.
