I have owned a 650GS for the last four years and there is nothing in this video that I can argue with. It is easy to ride, forgiving, and infinitely practical so much so that it has become my main mode of transport over the car. Everything from camping tours, city traffic, shopping, even carrying sacks of coal for the fire in the winter months.
Being short, it is the only enduro i can ride comfortably and i have been able to pick this up on my own, even when fully loaded with my camping gear.
Easy to work on too, I do all my own maintenance. The exception is valve clearances.
And yes, not the most attractive of bikes, the silver paint on the engine has a habit of peeling off, other things to look for is an appetite for head bearings, (roughly every 15000 miles) and water pump wear, though mine is still ok at 48000 miles. Go for the 2004 onwards twin spark bikes.

Very pleasantly done thank you! I am a returner to motorcycling and have discovered off roading in the mountain regions of Spain where I now live. I had a guided tour in Cantabria a couple of days ago, renting a small 250 mutt motorcycle and remembered how great it felt to be on two wheels again going up mountain passes and steep slopes covered in scree. I am looking for a smallish bike, 400cc upwards, a Himalayan, or the F650, and found your channel. Thank you for the way you present, you come across as a quiet, respectful, thinking, compassionate man, and that resonates with me. You have another subscriber!
    Take care. Mark

@@pegasusmotorcycletours Hi Nik - So please do let me know, in the previous GS video you had a gripe of no fuel indicator. I'm thinking of getting a Sertao here in Australia, having been former owner of Vstrom (not enough suspension in rougher terain) and Africa Twin (way too big and heavy and I recently crashed it and broke my leg!). As I heal up, I am thinking of the GS650 Sertao, but often I end up doing 80% road to do 20% dirt. What's your take on Sertao's performance/noise sitting on 100/110 on road? One TH-cam review suggested neutral is an issue on the gearing - is it an issue you've encountered? Many thanks. My only concern is coming from twin, single may just been too underpowered on 100km/h run down highways at length....

That must have been such an awesome trip and adventure. I returned to Brazil with my wife (we met there year prior) and the experience was very tense honestly. I don't think I'd be able to relax with her on the back. The situation there overall is getting really tense, especially in places around the Amazon due to illegal logging and mining - the road you mentions I believe is referred as the Ghost Road - I was more west towards the Border with Peru. As a long time biker with almost 50 bikes owned in last 40 years of riding, i really appreciate how much research and ownership experience you build up before giving a review. Great to hear that this review was helpful and CONGRATS - you'll love the bike. I made a tutorial of how to improve the stock kickstand easily and cheaply albeit on the Sertao/Dakar It is basically the same motorcycle, to be very honest, aside form the aesthetics mostly noticeable in the front end. The rear subframe is entirely the same, dimension wise, so much so that luggage racks and carriers are for the most part interchangeable. I review the G650GS as well so please take a look at that to get more insights into their differences and similarities. I have reviewed most of the 650 ADV thumpers on this channel, so please take a look through my videos. I also still have in my garage waiting to get reviewed the Honda XR650L and KTM SXC 625, as well as the BMW XChallenge. You deserved the full 20min of my busy time. What a great review! Im really considering this bike as my next one. I was a bit worried about it's behaviour on difficult off road and on long on-road fast cruise speeds, being a single cylinder but now i know that it's good enough. My actual bike is and Honda Varadero XLV125, a great adv 125cc bike but it's time to move on

Time is invaluable and I thank you for giving it - and am happy to hear you found it well spent, and the review informative and helpful. You wont be disappointed - since you have dirt background, have you considered the Dakar or Sertao? I would urge you to check my Sertao review out before pulling a trigger because that might be more up your alley. At the end of that review I reveal another 650BMW that is much more dirt oriented, rare, and super light (in comparison) That is the bike I ride today due to all of the factors above. The BMWG650XChallenge. Thank you again for being here and for participating in the conversation. Three more 650thumper reviews are in the making (Honda XR650L, KTM SXC635 and the XChallenge) so I look forward to hearing from you then. Be well in the meantime- Nik

@@pegasusmotorcycletours I saw that video too! Another great review :) I would prefer the sertao version for better off road specs but a friend of mine is selling me a standard f650gs with only 24.000 km and I think it's a nice opportunity. Also, I would share the bike with my father and he hates the dirt. Keep like that! Nice videos, very informative and interesting! Cheers:)

Thank you for watching and for adding your opinion about that increasingly rare motorcycle. I'm always curious about unique bikes like that and imagine the two carbs benefits torque and power delivery. I'm just not a fan of cleaning. But I would love to experience the EFI version the newer Picasso generation that I don't think was sold in the US. But the road texture is an awesome motorcycle. The next review will be of my Aprilia futura which has that same road text twin engine that was used in the RSV mile. And if you like these reviews please be sure to check out my other 650 adventure touring thumper motorcycle reviews, some of them are fairly hard to find bikes like the BMW x challenge and the ktm sxc 625. At the present, got the radiator hit by a little road stone and had to remove to fix it. Haven't found any one here in New Zealand to do it so I doing it myself as everything. Just wondering to know why the hell dual sport adventure bikes and dirt bikes come without a radiator guard, is my complaint to every motorcycle brand on this genres. Keep the shine side up Nik. 👍

There are also epoxies that you combine that harden to plug smaller holes. It's great to see reviews and comparisons by someone that has real life experience and use of Adventure motorcycling.
I personally feel that motorcycles have gotten ridiculously large on and off the road and therefore in both cases have lost the feeling of the machine being a extension of your body.
I want to go back to something simpler and easier to maintenance.

Yes, they should for the most part since the changes were largely aesthetic. This was a 2003. Next model switched from F to G, bit for a year or two BMW continued with the F650GS even though it was an 800cc twin. Silly in my opinion.

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours

To speed is close to 120 but honestly anything above 100 is sketchy because the 21 front typically with knobbies start to make the front feel too light and loose for comfort. The Beemer is definitely pepper and more responsive, and more stable at speed since it has a smaller front wheel.

I have a KLR650 Gen.1 which I consider to be the best of the KLR variants. It does everything without missing a beat, it's only downfall really the balance chain tensioner system but once that's replaced with the torsion spring mod. it is no longer an issue.
I like simple, cheap motorcycling because then I can service my machine, and with it being cheap it means more trips because I have no overheads other than basic maintenance.
Both these bikes will do this, but I will stay loyal to my "bullet proof" KLR even though both the Dakar and Sertao are head turners (I have been tempted) and somewhat prettier !!

The f650gs single is probably one of the best designs that BMW ever made. It is a pity they stopped producing it in this stupid race for more horsepower.
A lot of people still don't understand that a motorcycle needs 2 sturdy wheels and a simple reliable engine to serve all purposes.
Now, why put electronics on bike to tame down its too powerful engine instead of developing a great and more reliable engine built with modern materials, I for one cannot understand....
I've owned my 650gs for over 14 years now without a single issue and to be honest nothing on the market convinced me to change. I think I'll keep riding it until no spare parts are available and then turn it into a collectible as it deserves.
Hurray for this video, it is great to see these bikes are still properly appreciated after all these years.
And by thw way, BMW...please begin building proper bikes again, you're losing all your serious GS customers...

superb review. You speak very clearly and to the point, a pleasure to learn listening to you.
I'm on an edge between v strom 650 and f650gs. Somewhat leaning towards the gs, less weight and simplicity of a single is attractive, though v stroms are bulletproof in many ways... How is the f650gs to work on yourself? Parts not too expensive? thanks

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you for that, and thanks for being here. I've never owned the 650 Vstrom but have owned (the hell out of) two 1000s. It is an excellent motorcycle and actually, my first review wo this channel was a very detailed one of the Vstrom 1000. If you haven't seen it I would recommend it highly since it is my second most popular review.I promises you will learn a lot of useful info about the bike even if you are determined to ge the smaller brother, since a lot of the recommendations and info translates. As for which I would choose between the Suzuki and BMW - the Suzuki is definitely cheaper to upkeep, and aftermarket parts are easier to locate since they are more numerous, so if you are hoping to add a bunch of aftermarket parts on it, probably go with the Suzuki. But the GS is also proven, also bulletproof, and simple, so working on it is not a real challenge - and you need not bring it to the dealer really if you have medium level shop skills. In any case I always opt out for the simple bike and the GS is definitely more dirt capable. Also, the ABS and heated grips are. nice feature to have. And you watch the Suzuki review you will realize that I am always for getting the 1000 instead of the 650 just because its so much more bike. PS: I also reviewed the G650GS Sertao, the more dirt oriented version of the650 - that has been one of my favorite bikes so please be sure to check it out. There are so many great contenders I the single 650 ADV category, and I also review the DR650 by Suzuki and the KLR by Kawasaki. Out of all of these, the Sertao (formally the Dakar) is my favorite. I hope this helps. Cheers - Nik

Hi there. Just recently came across your channel. Congrats 👏👏 good content, fluid speech, very enjoyable to watch. I'm planning on buying my first bike and the Bmw F650gs is on my short list (not too tall, not too heavy and versatile). I found a 2002 apparently in good shape (new chain, tires, brakes, original top and side cases) but with 85000km 😬😬 the owner asks 1500€. In your opinion would it be a good deal or should I search for one with lower mileage knowing that the prices are almost double for one with 40/50000km? I appreciate your input. ✌️

Hi CJ, and welcome to my channel. I appreciate your participation in this community with your question and am glad you found the video valuable. If you liked this one, I strongly urge you to look at my BMW Sertao review - you'll find more relevant info about this GS line. As for that specific bike, I'd say it has a bit too many KM for my taste. It is a single cylinder 650 mind you so the life of these engines is not typically as long as other multi cylinder engines, and besides that it is 20years old now. Save up another grand and look for something with fewer miles - that would be my suggestion. Other factors do come into play such as how many owners the bike had, service records, age and experience of owner, etc. But I simply don't buy singles with more than 15k miles. At that point you are referencing they usually require top end work, clearance checks, gasket replacements, fell line and cable replacements, etc etc etc. I don't know where you are or how rich the market there is, but her ein Southern California 3k dollars buys a lot of bike now a days. Good luck in your search.I plan to put a video together about how to search for and evaluate/buy a used motorcycle so please consider subscribing cause I think that will be helpful for you. I also hope to hear from you when the next 3 rival 65 reviews drop (Honda XR650L, KTM SXC625, and BMW Xchallenge) and if you haven't seen my other 650 reviews already live, please do for some competition. Cheers - Nik

@@pegasusmotorcycletours hi Nik thanks for the reply. I'm in Europe, in Switzerland to be precise. Here the prices aren't as sweet as in the US 😁 and the GS650 apparently really holds its value. Under 15k miles prices start at 4000 + dollars or even more for the Dakar/Sertão versions 😬 the twin cylinder version starts at roughly the same price. What interested me in these bikes is the fact that they are not too tall and have a low center of gravity which I suppose would be ideal being an inexperienced rider. But as a beginner I was looking for something not too expensive. I've ridden 500cc naked bikes but I don't like the riding position and lack of comfort. That's why I turned myself towards the trail bikes. I'll have to try to test ride a couple, maybe it will help make up my mind. Keep up the good work, really enjoy your channel, it's among my favourites ✌️

If you are planning mostly road riding and easy dirt, go with the faster, more powerful bike. If it were the Alps, I'd go lighter, but in the outback a big bike is less of a burden and more usable. Although I love Hondas (three In the garage ATM including one form the 70s and a XR650L. -review coming soon), the BMW packs more tech and is newer so they are not real competitors, if you have the choice. Best of luck and please get in touch after your trip - I'd be very curious to hear what you go with and how it went. Cheers. -Nik

Great video thank you! I'm looking at getting my first road bike and am really interested in the F650 GS. Perhaps its slightly biased by the fact my dad and uncles have all had the R1200/1250 GS for as long as I can remember. My only concern is that it might be a bit small as I've read a few comments of people having this issues. At 6'3 would you still recommend?

I'm looking into getting the GS's cousin, the F650 CS (Scarver). They're super cheap and seem to be perfect for commuting and a bit of weekend fun. They have the same engine as the GS. Is there anything in particular I should check (like a visible/audible fault) when looking to buy?

Yeah, that's Avery interesting bike and you don't see them often on the road. Less capable in dirt but could still do some easy fire roads. How to purchase used is the next video in line - there are. Aton of little tell tale signs to look out for - please stay tuned. My main suggestion for you for now before that video comes out is to avoid any bike that's been crashed (the old, laid it down in the driveway story) - no salvage title bikes, and preferably try to look at bikes sold form original owners.

I agree completely that the motor w/the FI makes these bikes, the rear factory rack is silly, and also that it's absurd to not have a fuel gauge. I have an '05 Dakar that I have swapped the suspension (KTM White Power front, HyperPro rear), 18" rear rim, and a proper headlight, plus an aftermarket saddle and some bar risers, really make the bike so much more fun and safe to ride on backcountry roads. I would love an updated model with the Rotax, a lightweight frame, real suspension, a similar small but useful fairing and a solid gauge package. Thanks for the great video.

One more question... given the choice would you recommend/go with the post 2007 F650GS with the parallel Twin 800 or the previous F600GS single piston 650. I am too short for the G650 GS unfortunately... Could you give me your thoughts please?

Thanks for the questions. The 650 thumper sits lower and is lighter. I'm 5.8 and appreciate the lower seat height. It has plenty of power, bit ofcourse the two. Is smoother. So I'd say stick with either the f650gs until 2003, and g650gf thumper later on. I've also owned that rares ga 640 version title XChallenge. That's the best offroader yet. Stay tuned for that review.

The BMW’s engine with the KLR’s suspension, front wheel and rack would go a long way towards a decent bike.
That’s a clue to how I’m designing my own 1998 CCM Dakar inspired dual sport/adventure bike that addresses many of the deficiencies you’ve highlighted here, and more.
Add a lighter frame (with integral oil tank), plus an extra 5-10bhp via cam and inlet work, and lose the EFI in favour of a traditional carburettor and high mounted DNA air filter, plus the gearing you favour, and we’ve essentially got what the BMW should be, in my humble opinion.
Thank you for sharing your findings here. They’ve confirmed my own, and helped convince me my plans are on the right tract.
    Ride safe.

Pegasus Motorcycle Tours & Consulting Cheers. Thank you for your words and updates. Will look out for your next vids. I’m already subscribed and hope YT keeps me posted.
I’m presently at the parts weighing stage. Many of my choices are based upon weight saving. But because I’m also building on a limited budget, I’m looking at as many parts I can scavenge from the cheap bucket.
This has lead me to check out standard silencers from various bikes (often discarded in great condition due to weight, performance suppression and ugliness), with the intention of cutting them up to remove their excess weight and performance strangling features.
The process has turned up some interesting surprises. The Yamaha system with a valve is as heavy as a house!! And after an hour of carefully chopping all the welds of the early single stainless F650GS silencer with a 1mm cutting wheel, the damned thing still won’t come apart! But the OEM Suzuki GSXR1000 can condemned by owners as UGLY, is already only 3kgs and barely restricted.
I might get around to blogging this process at some point.

Hi there, welcome to the channel. I love the DL but I always had the 1000. I figure the extra weight is well worth the power cause that twin is amazing. I actually did an extensive review of the DL1000 ADV bike - it was the first review on this channel and what got me started. Check it out because most of the info applies to the 650. th-cam.com/video/FgZ3KVhCNOA/w-d-xo.html
The DL is more street worthy than the GS, and both are very reelable and easy to work on, but the DL is a twin so the power is delivered a bit differently - I love twins and you coming from a cruising background will too, but in that case you will just have to rent one and see if the thumper is the right way to go for you because it's a whole different beast. Typically the twins have more torque. The GS comes with ABs and heated grips, and if you can score a sertao (formally Dakar) you will love that bike. I also did a review of the Sertao - th-cam.com/video/ph5ELUGizxQ/w-d-xo.html - and will be completing the entore class of sub 700cc ADV bikes in a few upcoming reviews since one more is being released this weekend (honda NC700x), and three more are in my garage waitng to be reviewed. I hope this helps and hope to hear from you i nthe fture. Hi. Thanks for participating in the conversations. Great to have you. And to hear you are back in the game after the lengthy histus. Those are two very different beasts actuslly. One set up for modes everyday use and ocasional back roads and commiting, the other a more serious, capable adv Tourer. The price point is at least 5 grand higher for the T7. It's a much more capable bike in virtually every respect. Lots of tech, , more suspension travel. Harder to locate at the moment. If money isn't an issue, it's no contest really. The spare parts will be more difficult to locate simply due to the longevity of the KLR on the market vs the new T7. But the Yamaha is getting plenty of attention from aftermarket companies regarding luggage options and other farkles. Be aware that the T7 will also stand out more and attract attention down south. This isn't always a good thing (safety concern). Have you considered the newest KLR? It has one major improvement I ma excited about and that is EFI. Starts around 7 grand. Good luck to you and thanks for your question. All of this please take with a grain of salt - I have no experience as of yet with the tenere. It's just specs I am comparing. But I'd love to have it here state side. Down south, touring alone, the uglier the bike the less money the bad guys think I'm traveling with. Especially when you are alone. Ps. New review comes out today.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours Thanks for your honest and wise answer. Yes money si a big issue, moreover since in South America the T7 price is absurd, 80 - 85% overpriced. Consecuently, a highly valid consideration to look for other alternatives, as the becomes to attractive and dangerous to travel solo. Yes, have considered the new KLR, but again, it will start over 13 grand the basic version. And for that, I'd rather fly to SD, CA to look for a used Sertão.
