  • Troubleshooting what finally killed my BMW G650GS, and five lessons learned at the end of the day.
    I check the BMW G 650 GS' fuses, battery terminals, battery voltage, new LED headlight, replace the battery, test the charging system, and get a manufacturer to send me new parts under warranty.

    I am so glad that you found and solved the issue.
    During the entire video, I thought it was going be the Headlight that caused the problem.
    You sure did a good job with presenting this video.!

    starting procedure , when u start the bike hold the start button about 2-3 seconds more After it starts , leave it to bmw to over complicate a thumper , what the 2-3 seconds does is resets the fuel injection , and if the battery has gone bad , everything goes bonkers , also it take about 10 second to clear so if one turns off the ignition switch and then turns it back on it doesn't reset , this drove me bonkers before I learned of this , stalling , cutting off and then coming back , if I stoped at a gas station I would have to wait for the engine to cool down cause pressure in the cylinder , I got in the habit of having a jumper battery , just in case , but the starting procedure, eliminated , my issues , ohh and if you don't do the procedure every time , it will get weird again , great bike , I've a 2009 , thank god for you tube

      The hot start problem is a recall

    • @davidschoenoff4262
      @davidschoenoff4262 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pb7379-j2k yup it was , however good luck if one has a older bike mine is 2009 , the recall if iam not mistaken was a software update , or a depression arm that opens up a valve so the piston can rotate , and can get past the pressure
      And was only for 2001 and later , the hot start problem also happens if one’s
      battery is not at a full charge
      I have the decompression arms
      But have found out that if one doesn’t stick to the starting procedure the fuel injection system goes a bit bonkers
      Stalling and such forth
      All in all I have one of those small jumper boxes that I Cary with me , and that has been a big help ,
      I ride my g650gs. Every day between 20-60 miles and about a month back
      Had to get a new battery
      I also have a 2003 r1150gs
      Which is the opposite end of the spectrum
      I’ve had a 2014 f800gs which I absolutely loved, other then it was tall and on uneven ground was tricky if one had to stop quickly ,Iif I get another one I will lower it as at 6 foot tall I was up on tip toes and the 2014 f800 was the tallest bike Bmw made and I just felt with it ,
      I’ve also had a 2011 f650 gs which I bought new , that one was a bit of a beast
      I buy build and sell, do almost all my own work , I follow every thing I can and I try to help and read the forums as much as I can , am I expert , no . But I love these bikes and these forums are full of like minded folks, I really can’t thank all enough. So I do my best to give back
      Thank all of you , for what you all give
      I like the gs’s adventure bikes

      Thanks for the extra hold on starter button tip. Have a habit of just dabbing starter button and found that does not help my 2005 650 Dakar to start well. So already holding extra second on start button but your tip offers a justification for that. V useful 👌

    I was listening to a guy that did 150 000km on his and had to repleace battery very often (after half a year from new) until he was told that because of the placement (above the engine) the heat caused a need for top ups with distilled water. And with the top ups the batteries lasted regular time. Hope it helps ;)

    Dear Sir, I live in Australia and also have a 2014 BMW G650GS and I did swap out the original battery with a Lithium battery, I also bought a dedicated Lithium battery charger and also have the bike on trickle charge when I'm not using it, however I also have a Yamaha XT250 which also has a Lithium battery in it and recently I had to take it for a yearly compliance check for vehicle registration and guess what the Lithium battery WAS completely dead, even though I had that on a trickle charger also.
    I cannot remember if the Lithium battery in the Yamaha XT250 had the BMS system incorporated into the battery?, thankfully I still had the old lead acid battery ( also on a trickle charger ) that got me out of trouble
    I will be checking my fuse box on my BMW G650GS also for any corrosion!

      For starters call EVERYWHERE. The company I've been with for 4 years wants $1k more for a Z900RS than a company I've never dealt with before, same coverage.
      Secondly I never have more than two bikes insured at once. Just too expensive for me. You can switch the coverage during the year and there shouldn't be any fee for that.

    Batteries are bitches. There are a lot of different technologies. Currently I'm running a AGM lead acid battery, which means that instead of just having liquid hydrochloric acid in the battery case, there is an fibrous glass mat in there sopping wet with acid, between the plates. So if it's tilted, acid doesn't run out. AGM = absorbed glass mat. So different battery technologies have different requirements. Since my charging system was set up for a lead acid battery, I didn't want to change the battery technology. A 12 volt lead acid battery charger should charge at around 14.5 volts, so that's what the charger is going to put out. but the battery itself should charge to about 13.6 volts, sitting there, waiting to do something.
    Then you turn the key and try to start it. If you have your meter on the battery, It should have enough capacity to start your engine. That means, it has to turn your engine over, while still having enough voltage to run the fuel injection, and electronic ignition systems. I can tell by the sound, if my GS is going to start. Turning over is one thing, having enough power to run all the systems which are needed to run the engine, is another.
    BTW, if your fuse block is corroded, it's not water tight. So fix that, and maybe put some silicone grease in there as well.

    • @YouMotorcycle
      @YouMotorcycle  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the tip. I wonder if someone left it open once... hmm... As for the battery, I went with a lithium for the GS just because the battery is up high, I figured a little less weight up there wouldn't hurt. The poor bike already has to carry me, the missus on the back seat, and all our gear in the cases lol
