    Brilliant film. If you go back please visit the Riley Graves just outside the village.
    The Riley Graves are the open graves of the the Hancock family, most of whom died during the outbreak of plague in Eyam. In the space of a week farmer Elizabeth Hancock lost her husband and 6 children to the plague. Tragically, Elizabeth had to bury her family herself, Elizabeth carried and buried them on the hill. It is also thought that the infection reached her family through a villagers body she helped to bury

    Thank you for this little history lesson we learned in the 60s about it at school it's a shame they no longer teach English history Did you know while this was going on, on the hillside above the village lead miners were toiling away in the ancient mines around Eyam working in rags with only candles for light.

    Just up the road from me is the little village of Napier. The grave yard has many 1912 graves - also what looks like whole families. Wiped out by Spanish Flu. Nowhere near the magnitude of this village's loss, but sad nonetheless.

    I was born and bred and lived all my life in Eyam growing up with the plague story and have ancestors that can be traced back to those times .You have done there story proud Antony we really enjoyed the video (so did Tilly the dog😉) There is still a lot you didn't manage to film a fair few more cottages where people died also Mompessons Well ,Riley Graves,Humprey Merilles grave etc and more stories and sub plots to be told so we hope you come back again soon (If you need a local to show you where these places are please let me know)

    Excellent video. It's hard to grasp the enormity of what Revd. Mompesson asked of the villagers in standing with him in defending the country from the most terrible of deaths. As I understand, he was only a young man, too.

    Great video Anthony. The whole town of Eyam is one big history lesson on the plague. Compared to this town's lockdown, covid was a walk in the park. It is so unreal to see the graves in the backyards and along the road like these. Maybe it is normal in the UK, but I have never seen anything like that out here in the US. It must have been an eerie scary feeling being in lockdown in that town, having to bury your loved ones, no one on the streets, nothing to occupy your time except the wondering if you are going to be the next victim. When I lived in Diamond Bar, CA in the 1980's there was park my friends and I used to go to where it was found that the squirrels had fleas carrying the Bubonic Plague. The county shut down the park for over 5 years, until they determined that it was safe again. Weird to think that after hundreds of years the Black Death is still out there.

    • @daftmonkey7296
      @daftmonkey7296  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Paul. It’s very eerie around the village at times and I bet at night the atmosphere changes again. It’s not normal for people to be buried in this way in the uk, quite rare in fact. I suppose it was just as much as a shock for me as it was for you. I suppose they represent a moment in time that doing such a thing was the only solution. Taking nothing away from the place because it’s absolutely beautiful, but I’ve never been somewhere that has a vibe like Eyam. Thanks so much for watching buddy! Take care 👍🏼

    I saw my first ghost in farmhouse in Eyam. We went there on a karate training excercise that my dad and his friend ran.
    Me and my dad "camped out" in the front room in front of a roaring fire. After making nice colours in the flames from burning copper, we all went to sleep.
    Just me and my dad in the living room, and at about 3am, I woke to see an old man in a chair near the fire. He looked at me, I smiled and went back to sleep. I asked about him the morning after but there was nobody with us that looked like that!
    Eyam will always hold a dear place in my heart.

    Hi Ant, these people were way ahead of their time in their thinking, when we know what we know now about how desease spreads, they didn't know that, and it must have been so tempting to think about leaving the place, it took some real courage to stay put and await your fate, especially as a mum seeing all your kids die one by one, can't imagine what that felt like, and to put their money in vinegar so as not to spread the desease, that was real forward thinking, and for everyone in the village to agree to this is amazing, because there will always be someone who thinks I'm not staying here to die!, this village has got amazing atmosphere, makes you wonder how many houses are haunted, thanks for going back to Eyam Ant this was really interesting, your vlogs are really good xxx

    Amazing video. I can pick up the spooky vibe of this place just from the vid. It must have been so weird at the end with so few left. I read somewhere, that with so many dead at the end of this catastrophe, that the simple labourer could command a good days' pay for his graft and simply left the old landowner and his old feudal ways behind in search of opportunities elsewhere.

    Thanks Anthony....very sad. Great story telling as usual. When you consider how few people there were in the world back then, such numbers dying would have had far more impact. When I was born in 1955 the world population was around 3 billion, it's 8 billion now and climbing fast. If we don't blow ourselves up first, I guess its only a matter of time before something similar to this happens again. And on that happy note I'll wish you all the best mate. 😂

      Just a historical note- ring of roses nursery rhyme is likely unrelated although it’s one theory. Also the cloth from London was more than likely riddled with infected human lice rather than rats fleas. Not that that’s crucial to the story but still

    There is no evidence for the bundle of cloth from London. There was Plague at Derby, which is a day's ride from Eyam. George Viccars could have been sent there for cloth for his boss Alexander Hadfield, who lived next door to the widow Mrs Cooper, whose tenant George Viccars was. Alexander Hadfield was also her boyfriend. Mirs Cooper had two boys, one was not in the village at the time, the other was the second victim, 3 year old Jonathan Cooper. The third victim was Alexander Hadfield. Mrs Cooper never caught the Plague.

    Apparently the plague didn’t influence the song. It was just an old pagan circle song.
