Three deaths: The first is when you take your last breath. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time.

While there are young people like you who care about history like this, there is hope. It has always stunned me how graves from the 1800s can just be left neglected, or worse cleared. What other artefact that is 200+ years old could be smashed up and no-one would care. Loved watching this and thanks for the restoring my faith in the future 😍

@@daftmonkey7296 That’s absolutely true - if you watch the BBC documentary about the 1914 Flu Epidemic you realise a lot of what they are doing now comes from learning about what happened then, and things they didn’t do then. History is always with us 😊. I found you via Martin Zero and so will be going through your other VLOGS now - The Scuttlers, Angel Meadow ... woo-hoo! 😊. I’ve read fantastic books on both those things so it will be lovely to link it to seeing the places. There is a very readable book, written in 1844 by W H Chaloner, that has now been published as an ebook. It’s called ‘Manchester in 1844’. The language is a bit strange sometimes but it is like talking directly to someone from that time! He talks about Lancashire becoming ‘studded with roads, canals, railways ...’ but he’s living in 1844, when the industrial revolution was just starting! It’s a good read if you ever fancy touching the bare roots of history 😊 Keep going! I’m going to watch The Scuttlers now! 😱

In the shitty days we live in, best it's so full of trees and overgrown, as that protects the stones far better than the useless council ever could. Councils do more damage than amateur vandals, often enough, toppling stones for "safety" reasons.

What a fantastic place to explore. Full of forgotten history. As you can probably tell from my channel I love a mooch around an old cemetery. They tell you so much about the social history of an area. There are quite a few cemeteries around where I live that are abandoned and overgrown like this one. A few locked up to stop people going in and falling down into collapsed graves. (One about five miles away from me is usually locked up but one day the gate was left unlocked and I was right in there to have a look. Some of the graves had dropped about 5ft!)
Although sadly neglected they are a haven for wildlife. I think it all comes down to local authorities having very stretched budgets, and allocating funds to the upkeep of a long unused cemetery comes last on the list of priorities. Once a certain period of time has passed and those that visited the graves of their loved ones have also passed on there is no one left to complain about the state of things.

    • @daftmonkey7296

I plan on doing a few more Graveyard vids soon! Sounds like I could film for hours with the ones near you! I couldn’t agree more with what you said about them being neglected. I think your right, it’s probably really low on the priority list.

I remember when I worked with some older generations back in the early 2000s in Monton eccles they was trying to get planning permission to build on that graveyard. It was denied as a few people still alive with relatives in that cemetery protesting - they would have passed away or be very old now - so perhaps the council let it go to ruin so that eventually planning permission (a lot of backhanders within Salford city council for example unicorn pub eccles was torn down they stated due to asbestos which many people involved within that even workers for the council stated there was none because the high up in Salford council have been given secret “brown envelope” by developers whether supermarkets or big home builders like bellway homes. Also old historical pubs or buildings are mysteriously set on fire within Salford etc 🤷‍♀️ then the developers get the land they want) it’s a shame because the history of Salford and Manchester is very interesting. Great videos 👍🏻 I love history keep up the brilliant work

Whilst you were trailing this on Facebook I hadn’t clocked the fact it was “forgotten” which made the film more poignant for me. You did a great job on this one Mr. M, a brilliant watch mate as always. I was struck by the ages of some of the deceased actually, the couple whose children had died as teens and some of the others lived long lives for the time. It made me wonder if the Graveyard was rather exclusive in its day if you get me. The old picture you put in of it showed some extravagant head stones and that. Though you did mention some paupers’ graves so I don’t know. Anyway, looking forward to what you have for us next time mate. @@daftmonkey7296 Salford like all councils are always happy to widen their boundaries giving them more money and power while not giving a toss for the culture of the area under their rule.
The real Salford boundary ended around Ladywell Hospital. Same with other outlying areas such as Pendlebury, Swinton etc which were never Salford and even spoke with a different accent.
We called them yonners as they sound more Lancastrian and less manc.
