I haven't even finished the reaction but this is already one of the best analyses of "be free" I've seen. You hit on so much I was hoping you would. From a storytelling perspective I really love how, as you put it, they flipped the script we were expecting after "begin." We're only able to really understand Yoojung once we see him THROUGH KB's perspective, which is just so so clever because it reinforces this idea that Yoojung has this barrier around himself; he's protecting himself even from the AUDIENCE. And now that we have more context his hesitance, his uncertainty, as well as his hope for something more are obvious when you go back and watch "begin," but at the time it wasn't necessarily.
I especially think about that crucial line in the chorus: "When you're free from any prejudice (freedom will begin)." At the time, most of us assumed he was talking about KB, trying to urge *him* to be free (pun intended), when really he's talking largely to himself. He's at a point where he still needs the distance of the second person (that imagined "you") to be able to articulate it even to himself imo. And if that isn't a queer ass MOOD, I don't know what is. 😂 Lord knows that would've hit me so fucking hard when I was still questioning/closeted as a teen. This whole project would've.

Like 6ish months ago ooo were a guest on a TH-cam channel that reacts to a lot of Indian and Thai artists. One of the songs they reacted to was "I'll do it how you like it" by an up and coming Thai singer named PP Krit. The song is about a queer love story, and since Thailand is much more open, the mv was way more explicitly queer than any Korean mv I have seen. During that reaction one of the OOO members said they needed to step up their game, and now they are giving us some of the best, and quite frankly only, lgbtq+ themed mv's and storylines any idol group has made so far. Knowing the sentiment about LGBT people in Korea, this is quite brave of them.

I saw some people on twitter finding out elements in "be mine" MV that might allude to religion (Flourescent light cross appearing on the background when they meet up for the first time at the bridge and Junji wearing a cross necklace at the final scenes), and saying maybe that's why the mood became serious at the end. Tho as many have already mentioned, we hope Rie's solo will tell us his perspective on this story so we can find out what happened.

    • @mel_ooo
      @mel_ooo ปีที่แล้ว +9

right, it definitely wouldn't be the first time ooo included religion and religious guilt into their story. rie possibly being conflicted between what he wants what religion tells him he should want would be really cool

Thank you for the deep analysis. Sunset of the relationship😭 I feel Rie's MV will also be a flip of JunJi's like how KB's turned the perspective around compared to YooJung's. There will be 3 more MVs coming from Rie, Mill, and Nine. We are not sure about the ordering of Mill and Nine's releases, but they should be portraying another couple in their MVs.

I adore this solo/pair storyline project so much. Another channel I watch reacted to some of the MVs recently and I commented a whole essay that I wont subject you to about how much I love this. The TLDR version is just that the individual stories, the actual songs, the MVs, the acting, and the overall concept is just so gorgeous. The group has never shied away from LGBT concepts, but this whole thing is just so wonderfully done. They are portraying these characters in such a realistic and beautiful way, nothing seems forced or overdramatic for the sake of grabbing your attention, it's just so lovely. I can't wait for the rest of the members solos to come out. 💜💜

fans also aren't sure what the ending of be mine means, we'll find out in the next mv ofc ^^
my personal interpretation is that rie is scared of being public about their relationship. all their happy scenes are just them in private but in the last scene they're surrounded by people and rie looks very stiff and uncomfortable, junji looks a lot more relaxed
the phone booth, according to yoojung, symbolises a worldview but he didn't specify it.. to me it might mean feeling caged in or hiding from the world, having literal walls up around you. and with that thought looking at the scene, when junji knocks, rie almost looks sheepish? like he got caught falling into bad habits again. so it might be that rie is trying to be more open but having a hard time with it

Like in begin and be free, kb like almost rushes into that phone booth like how in be free, kb is the one that initiates to yoojung

@@alax-.- right i'd even say kb crashes into the phone booth like none of them had really planned on it while junji is a lot more deliberate!

Thanks a lot for these additional reactions to OnlyOneOf. It's a pure joy to get your takes on the songs, the way you organize and articulate your thoughts in such a clear way makes it even more enjoyable and interesting.
As you saw here, OnlyOneOf's songs/MVs can truly lead to multiple interpretations as they remain quite open. We really get to form various theories about their storylines and lore which is just so exciting, funny and stimulating.
Love how you saw that "be free" completely subverts our expectations after "begin". Both characters may be struggling in their own ways, but the one who craves for freedom the most turns out to be Yoojung.
The phone booth has been described as "a world view" by Yoojung. It's still quite unclear but it may symbolize different things : 1) the "outside world" and the view/influence it can have on the characters = a metaphor about how society puts pressure on the characters and views their identity/relationships ; 2) a view of the characters' "inner/personal world" = my favourite interpretation, with for instance Yoojung standing in a semi-open phone booth/inner world (not fully ready to free himself from his closeted/reserved state while KB litterally comes crashing into his world by bursting into the phone booth), and then Rie still locked into the phone booth (locked in by society's pressure and whatever exterior difficulties he might be facing - represented by the phone call - while Junji knocks on the door of his world to call him out or make himself in) ; 3) a world view as in "a specific view/interpretation on the storyline" = each scene with the phone booth might represent a different way of viewing/interpreting the storyline of these MVs and the relationships between the characters... maybe the upcoming MVs will confirm this hypothesis.
imo their choice to use a phone booth to picture all these ideas is very clever. The phone booth can represent a closed or open closet, a conflicted mind, a closed/open-minded society... it also conveys an idea of tension between isolation/communication : there's a sense of secrecy and privacy attached to this closed space which can represent the discourse that is told by society and the social expectations that lay upon the characters, but also the desire of these characters to express themselves, to tell about their story and concerns to other people, to be heard and listened to by someone willing to hear and listen and accept them for who they are (and potentially help them and guide them towards freedom and happiness).
For now, "be mine" portrays exactly what you described. The ending is quite unclear and we might form a completely different interpretation after seeing Rie's MV. For now we are led to understand that Rie is the one struggling with society's expectations/unknown personal difficulties/self-acceptance issues. When making the phone call, he might have received some bad news like you theorized, but he may also be pressured by social discourse or his relatives trying to talk him out of his relationship with Junji. Or maybe he's the one making the call, trying to express himself, or to reach out to someone who could help him figure out his situation. He turns to Junji and acknowledges him, even smiling to him sheepishly, but he doesn't come out or open the door. The next MV will most likely reveal if Rie is really the one having an issue with accepting his relationship in the end... or if there is actually a problem with Junji too.
All of these are only hypotheses and i'll need to dig deeper and analyze everything carefully as the storyline progresses.
But i really like your theory about "be mine"'s ending scene being Rie and Junji's goodbyes to each other. Because in the scene at the beginning of the MV, after Junji runs after Rie, Junji asks Rie if he'll ever get to see him again - to which Rie replies in a whisper "I'll see you again" (for context, Rie revealed these dialogue lines in their reaction video to the MV). After all, in spite of what Junji hoped for and what Rie said, they may not be able to see each other anymore.

Ayyyyy I'm so happy you kept reacting to this series!! OOO needs more attention, they're doing an amazing work!! It's so heartwarming to read in the comment section how many people relate to one of this songs, it's so beautiful to feel seen ♥️ can't wait for Rie, Mill and Nine songs!!
I loved both of your interpretations here (as usual) made total sense! helped me too to understand better the stories. Maybe Rie is not leaving the place, but facing a hard situation? And wanted to push Junji away? Idk.
Also, in their mv reaction, they said the phone boot represents a different worldview (and ig it's gonna show in the six mvs). Anyways, thank you for this video!!

This was a really great analysis of be free. I've watched the video more times than I can counts, seen reactions of it, and read multiple analyses of it, yet I still didn't realize some of the things you pointed out. You're right that the dance scene really seems like a metaphor for how Yoojung is being himself only in private and is scared and embarrassed to get caught, but Kyubin joins him and invites him to, as the title suggests, be free. I also didn't notice the difference in how Kyubin is showing a lot of skin while Yoojung is covering himself up.
As for be mine, I don't think Rie necessarily is moving away or that this is the end of their relationship. I noticed 2 commonalities in the Kyujung storyline and the Junrie storyline: the telephone booth and the paper cranes. Yoojung said the telephone booth represents a worldview. Since Kyubin and Junji are the ones taking the lead on initiating a relationship, and Yoojung and Rie are the ones seen in the booth, it could relate to being sort of boxed up in a way. It also seems like Rie is the one making the paper cranes here, as was Yoojung, so those could represent wanting to feel free to "take flight" in a way.
But anyway loved your reaction, and ps you were pronouncing Rie correctly but Junji is pronounced "joon-ji" :)

I really enjoyed your reaction and your interpretation a lot!!
you take the time to analyze the details, whether it's in the video or the lyrics.
You got me thinking about your ~Be Free~ perspective 🤔
At the end of ~Be Mine~ because of Rie's expression I also feel that something is happening with him, perhaps he is still afraid of expressing his feelings surrounded by people who are not related to him!!
Thank you for continuing to react to OnlyOneOf!!
    Take care!!!

The phonebooth are actually symbolic of their worlds of their personalities and their confidence in their preference, in each of their perspectives...
With Yoojung's "begin" Yoojung is is always sometimes inside and outside of the phonebooth... he seems free to be in and out of the booth, but for some reason, he doesn't go far away from that booth. Even if he was out he seems reluctant to separate from the booth.
With KB's "be free", is KB literally barging into Yoojung's phonebooth (world) and forcing him to get out of that booth...
And of course Junji's "be mine", they started out with none of them being in the phonebooth, but both of them passing by it... and in the end, Rie enters that phonebooth at the "end" of the day, his face cast down as he talks on the other line which represents the voice inside his head, the doubts, the fears and the comments of people outside of their relationship. While Junji walks into that booth and knocks on it, showing Rie that he's there... and yet, they may not know it, but there is still a barrier between it because Rie remains inside the booth whole Junji is still outside of it. As Rie might still be wary to lett anyone in..
