  • The Supermarine Spitfire was a fighter aircraft that saw service with the RAF during the Second World War. In this video I complete a long-format build of the Airfix Supermarine Spitfire Mk.1a Plastic model kit in 1/72 scale.
    The version I have here (A68206) is from the Starter Set (or "gift set" as they are sometimes called) which comes with some small pots of paint, a brush and some cement. The perfect start for a beginner!
    The aim of this series is to give you the chance to quite literally "build with me" - so if you have this kit and want to give it a go, this is the perfect video for you!
    Alternatively, if you are a beginner, there are lots of helpful, simple and easy techniques that can be found in this series - so definitely worth a watch!
    In this first episode I focus on understanding the contents of the kit, basic build techniques and complete the painting and construction of the cockpit & pilot.

    Shouldn't worry about snipping off the pilots feet because having no legs didn't affect Douglas Bader ability to fly a Spit.

    As for the decal solutions: when I was building my first kit after returning to the hobby (which incidentally was the same Spitfire 😅) I didn't have any of those, so I found a tip online saying to use vinegar diluted with water. I ended up using straight vinegar, as I found it worked better that way. And WORK IT DID! The decals melted into the recessed panel lines beautifully! I think it's quite a good tip to include into a beginner level video.
    Waiting for the next one!

      Yes, the acetic acid in the vinegar helps to soften the decal :)

    Ref gluing or painting first.. I did see one You Tuber who used masking fluid on areas he'd want glue to stick to later, then painted the parts and removed the masking fluid. Hey presto, a painted part with clean mating areas :) IIRC he did the edges and inside tail surfaces of a fuselage that way.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not a bad idea - probably not something I would do though as it takes a lot of foresight to know where the glue is going and then extra work to add the mask on, but something to consider

    Hello. Thank you for sharing first. Interesting video. And nice done. You make like me clean the sprues into a sopy water isn't? And it's very important to make that. And I see that you have one box with a lot of pot of painting. Haha 😂. I have the same. I buy one Spitfire in 1/72 scale but in Revell. And two others to. But I have in Airfix the best plane for me .... the Spitfire Supermarine or not. And in 1/24 scale. Wow 😳. I have waiting 3 weeks for it. Cause it was coming from the industrie in England. Yes. But the airplane the Spitfire it's for me the best of the best. Without this airplane the ww2 was impossible to won. Yes 👍. Really. But it is not the question here. I like very much wat you make. You show everything very good. With calm and precision. Thank you for that. The model of Airfix is very good. So have a good Sunday. And make all of us a lot of models. Tanks, airplanes, cars etc.... just thank for sharing.

    That's a bit of an odd choice to first assemble all the cockpit parts to prevent having to scrape off paint for glueing.
    Only for you to still end up scraping off paint to glue the whole cockpit assembly in place.😅
    The result looks fine so it all works out in the end.👍

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The point was to glue all the small parts together - they have such a small contact area that any paint there could get in the way of them bonding properly. The cockpit assembly as a whole has a considerably larger surface area for gluing into the fuselage sides, so paint being there isn't much of an issue.
      Given that my intended audience for this video is primarily beginners, i thought this was the simplest way to mitigate their parts not gluing together correctly

    • @martijn9568
      @martijn9568 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ModelMinutesThat's not a bad idea. I've personally never used Humbrol's Poly Cement, only Revell's Contacta, which seems to glue small part fine through some paint. Just don't make it load bearing.

    Starter Sets are the worst option to build a model. It makes harder build instead of buying good cement, paints and brush.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well there will always have to be a balance between ease and cost. To get better quality paints and glue in the set will mean pushing the price up to the point it’s no longer in the budget of someone just starting out

      As this is a beginner's model and the video is directed at beginners it is excellent. As any good teacher/parent knows the most important things are to always encourage and give opportunity to succeed or at least feel they have accomplished something. It doesn't matter one jot what the end result looks like so long as the novice has learned something and enjoyed doing so. If people start comparing what they've done alongside what could be done by an experienced and skilled modeller they are unlikely to try again. It is ok that you don't like it but it is a sad mentality that feels a need to tell us. BTW a sentence should start with a capital letter.
