  • The Supermarine Spitfire was a fighter aircraft that saw service with the RAF during the Second World War. In this video I complete a long-format build of the Airfix Supermarine Spitfire Mk.1a Plastic model kit in 1/72 scale.
The version I have here (A68206) is from the Starter Set (or "gift set" as they are sometimes called) which comes with some small pots of paint, a brush and some cement. The perfect start for a beginner!
The aim of this series is to give you the chance to quite literally "build with me" - so if you have this kit and want to give it a go, this is the perfect video for you!
Alternatively, if you are a beginner, there are lots of helpful, simple and easy techniques that can be found in this series - so definitely worth a watch!
In this third episode I focus on painting the model with the included paints.

Very hit and miss on colour and occasionaly dried out. I wish airfix would address that. I find the dropper bottles they sell are very economical and just keep the kit paints for touch up. Shameless plug from me to promote Revell's Aqua line of paints. They're perfect for brush painting and only the gloss and satin paints need a primer. They also don't lift that easily, unlike Vallejo's.

Ye gods. I had no idea how bad the acrylic paints perform. This must be excruciating for young modellers new to the game. Thank goodness for those little bottles of carcinogenic, toxic infused bright colours we had in the 1960s. How could we manage without Methylated Spirit and Turpentine stored in jam jars in our bedrooms. Thank you or this wonderful tutorial. I hope children get to see this.

@@graemetonks7825 Thank you. Well said. Dropper Bottles are great. However, I didn't get my first Airbrush until I was a teenager. A Sprite. Very basic, no control. On or Off and for large surfaces mostly. I used a Car Wheel and a foot pump to power it. Model primer didn't come along 'til much later. The only paints were lead-based, small bottles @ 6d each. If a starter kit came out then, with new fangled acrylic paints, I think a lot of kids would have been turned off from modelling.

These included acrylics are terrible. You are not able to get decent results out of box. One question remains. Would cheap acrylic primer spray do the thing and make these acrylics work as they should, or should you just throw them to the bin and buy anything that works.

Please allow me to give a few constructive comments. Because... really.... you need them.
1:32 . Just shaking it a bit will do nothing. You actually need to stirr it well with, f.i. a wooden or stainless steel rod.
2:00 . Use some alcohol instead of water. And add a tiny drop of retarder. Or a tiny drop of washing up liquid. This will break the water tension. And NO, it will not badly affect the paint.
You are using the wrong type of brushes. And the quality is bad. For larger surfaces, use natural hair brushes. Flat, about 7 to 10 mm wide. Wider, for larger surfaces.
2:45 . Clean the model well. Before painting, use alcohol and a lint free cloth. You could also buy a spray can of primer. This primer will give you the perfect surface to paint on. You mention this, later in the video, so why don't you use the best techniques, yourself....???
3:13 . Nonsense. Water based paints on plastic will usually cause these types of problems. That's why you have to use different methods and materials compared to oil based paints.
And if that is the first layer, it is too thick. Use alcohol and retarder, use a wide brush and if the paint is somewhat transparent, here and there, it's okay. It'll disappear after the next layer.
8:33 . Humbrol 29 and 30 are not the best colours for a Spitfire. Revell 82 and 68 are closer to the original.
10:08 . Acrylic paints behave very differently from oil based paints. Humbrol acrylics are not the best in the industry.....
But a bad craftsman always blames his tools. I can get really good results with Humbrol.
And if a manufacturer changes the formula it is almost certainly an improvement. Why would they make a product worse?
1-:38 . Your painting techniques hurt my eyes. Please use better brushes and techniques......
    17:04 . Like I said: Revell 82 and 68 are better colours.
    27:28 . ....... just lost for words........

Whilst you do raise some interesting points i'm guessing this is the first video you've seen from my channel?
I think you missed the point of this video, and If you go back to part 1 (and even read the description of the video) you'll know that this series is aimed at those modellers just starting out in the hobby and potentially only have the starter set. It's meant as a guide for these new modellers, but I will address your concerns one by one.
      1. Yes, mixing is indeed important, and just because I didn't show you that i didn't stir it on screen doesn't mean that I didn't do it. Additionally this series is meant to be watched in order and in part 1 around 10:50 I do indeed show you how to mix the paints with a cocktail stick
      2. Alcohol may not be available to a beginner
      3. I'm using the brushes that came with the set (or close facsimiles) because that's probably what a beginner would have
      4. The model was cleaned in part 1
      5. The only acrylic paints I've experienced this "pull back" on is Humbrol, having used vallejo, Tamiya and Revell acrylics its not something that they seem to do
      6. The included paints were used because they were included . . .whilst other paints would be better they didn't come in the set and it's unreasonable to expect a first-timer to go and buy them
      7. Humbrol have changed their paints recently - trust me, I speak to their head of brand, and they know that these new paints in the starter sets are not up to mustard and are being changed in future releases.
      8. I use beginner style painting techniques as this is aimed at beginners, perhaps you should wear eye protection?
      9. I refer you to point 6
      10. Lost for words? You've probably used them all up with the essay you wrote

    • @telescopereplicator
      @telescopereplicator 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Indeed, I have only seen this one video. I shall have a look at the others, too.
It's a pity Humbrol includes tools of poor quality. It only makes life more difficult for beginners.
If you make a video for beginners, try to give them good advice. Even with the tools provided by Humbrol, you could have done better. Let's be honest. A man of your age, with your experience....
And I sure hope that the new paints from Humbrol are up to - muster - !!

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

As someone who talks to a lot of beginners, they tell me that they become overwhelmed by the sheer amount of "good advice" that more experienced modellers try to give them. I try and keep it simple and expand on things one step at a time.
It's all a learning process and just because you don't agree with some of my suggestions doesn't necessarily means its bad advice. I'm just trying to be realistic and relatable.
The amount of serious modellers on here and reddit/forums that I see telling beginners to just get an expensive airbrush, or this expensive kit, or use this complicated skill/technique is kinda crazy. These things take time, money and practice, and if we put people off the hobby by telling them to go too big too fast then they will lose interest when they struggle or can't afford these products.
I'd rather encourage a thousand modellers to build a thousand "bad" kits because at least that way, we still have new people joining the hobby. And who knows, hopefully most of them will stick with it and help the hobby grow stronger.
Or, you know, I could put people off by making it too complicated...@@telescopereplicator
