I bought the same set 1 week ago in the Netherlands because I want to start modelbuilding again after 60 years ( I build my first kit when I was 12 years old) and this set looked perfect for starting. But I am lucky that I not started yet. Looked at the propellershaft and it had the same problem and also only the black and green paint where fine. I will go to the shop where I bought it and asked for good paint. Thank you for this very helpful video.
@@ModelMinutes I have built 2 airfix starter kits (Spitfire mk1a and Sherman Firefly) and both had all of paints dried. I have saved it with water as thinner, but black on Firefly was dried completely. I agree with you, they should look up humbrol factory at what they are doing, bc some beginners would just throw away this nice hobby only because such stupid thing 😅
Used to do work for Airfix back in the 70's, drawing the manuals (yes blame me), it was great fun. We were a sub company studio but most work was from Airfix. Could not have worked with nicer people, great days.
Few things to say: First of all, nicely done Matt, camera work and production was fantastic, the video was a joy to watch That prop assembly is not just a problem with your kit. I have not built this spitfire but the new mossie from airfix in the same scale has the same system and it has the same problem on both of the props. I didn't catch what was going on so just glued the spinner to the engine nacelles as I would normally. So that is 2 kits that have the same problem now. I have noticed that airfix recently have overengineered things and creating complex, not very functional solutions to problems we don't really have. That cockpit colour that you mixed is closer to that of the yellowy green found in USAF aircraft, the RAF ones are pale green with a slight hint of blue That green for the camo colour is certainly off. I have painted real aircraft with what that colour should be and its not even close
7:45 the cockpit canopy doesn’t actually need to be glued as it just clips into place. If you look at the instruction sheet it has the no glue icon next to the cockpit canopy fitting step
So pleased I watched this! I had the exact same problem with the prop. This was my first effort at an Airfix model. Stupidly I really tried to force it in and even hit it with a hammer which of course cracked the part at the front. Ended up gluing it and it has come out ok. Thanks for this detail.
Built the same kit as a Xmas gift for my mother recently and yes, the exact same issues with the propeller fit. It always pays to test fit everything before adding the sticky stuff. It goes without saying that the paints were useless as three had dried beyond revival and the fourth only just. I also compared the supplied colours with a paint chart and the colours were noticeably different so I wouldn't have used them either way. As a starter set, besides the paint issues and that prop, I'd agree that Airfix have got it just right, and they're an improvement on the early Matchbox/Airfix kits from the '70's I learned on. The Spitfire I built looks perfectly acceptable after some weathering, some cockpit detailing & placing it in a small diorama with some ground crew. Mother liked it, so mission accomplished.
Bought this this week and had the same issues you had, clumpy paints, which luckily were all saved, and the same problem with the prop spindle, but thanks to your video I was able to fix before gluing with a pin vise....didn't stop me getting glue on it and gluing it solid! Lol Great video, keep up with the great videos!🙂
Does it matter if you glue the prop solid? I mean, it's not as if you're going to do a prop-start. Although, if you do, remember to stand clear the moment you hear the engine pop... before it bursts into life! :0)
Thank you. A really great video. I got into modelling over lockdown 1 and have carried on. Although only built Revell 1:144 airliners. This has really give me confidence to try a bigger airfix kit. Thank you and just subscribed to your channel.
Oh yikes, yes dried paints really stunned me back in 2019 with the P-51 Mustang starter set. Hopefully this only happens to really old kits that were in the back. Nice video, cheers.
just built this kit myself, in part thanks to your videos getting me into the hobby after a number of years. The paints were pretty good for the most part, but the 106 was a bit clumpy (I thinned all the paints with water anyway.) The green was also a completely different colour (more of a grey-green than the pea soup colour of your set) so I would imagine Humbrol probably did something to the formula. Not sure of the age of the set but it was a 2-pack with the red arrows hawk that was on discount due to external damage so I would imagine it was a bit older. Either way, I can definitely say this video, amongst others has helped me get back into Airfix as I thoroughly enjoyed the experience (even if it was a bit fiddly.)
I'm glad you enjoyed it and my videos helped! :D Sounds like a different batch of paints were included in the version you had, which is probably a good thing :)
@@ModelMinutes it also seems the propeller shaft not fitting is a common problem, as I ended up not gluing it in and had to hit it into place with a hammer. Airfix have definitely made the hole too small.
@@stuff31 yeah, I’ve spoken to others and they seem to have had the same problem

Me and my son had a go at this kit and had the same problem with the propeller. I wish I had seen this video before trying it out. Thanks anyway for the excellent tips. I will have a look at your videos from now on. All the best!
it does seem to be a bit of a common issue with the design of the propeller and the mounting but i'm glad you find my videos helpful :D

I forgot to mention the dried paints. We were able to save them but I had to search for ways of doing it. I even thought they were supposed to come this way and that diluting them was part of the process. 😂 Do you have any suggestions for our second project as this is very new to us?
My first kit that I got for Christmas in 2023 was an Airfix “Dogfight Doubles” BF-109E-4 and Spitfire Mk.1A set, which also had the issue of dead paint. For me, half the paint in the kit was dead, which included black, grey, brown, and the #30 dark green. I didn’t have any knowledge on how to thin paints at that time, nor did I have the proper supplies to do it, so I tried to use water to revive them. Somehow, the grey was revived with just water. For the rest of the paints, they were dead. The rest of the dead paints were all colors for the Spitfire, so I settled with just painting it with the #117 green from the BF-109 and the #90 beige green which was the only good paint meant for the spitfire. Still enjoyed the kit nonetheless. Nice video, I enjoy watching them, and I watched one of your videos before I started making models (Might’ve been this one), so thank you for helping to introduce me to the hobby!
thanks for sharing! If you do have problems with paints being dry when you purchase a similar product from Airfix, contacting the spares department could help resolve that I'm glad my content has helped you in some way :D
I've been looking forward to this review, a Spitfire has been a potential project in the back of my mind for some time now. And of course, I left a like and a comment.
I got my first airfix kit when I was seven and it was a spitfire starter kit that my grandad got me. I built half the cockpit and was thoroughly enjoying it but the I found most paints had dried up and were not even the correct colours. This really through me of and the next kit I built was 4 years later and I got properly into the hobby, this time I had to get vellejo paints as it wasn't a starter. Basically, dry paint can really throw you off.
When you soaked the entire decal sheet, you brought back memories of my earliest days in this hobby as I used to do the same thing back then! But I didn't have the presence of mind to actually cut the sheet after having done so - that came a bit later after I built my first Tamiya kit and talked to a friend who had been building them since he was really young (I was 11 years old at the time). Airfix's instructions for decal placement were to my mind very vague for a child to understand back in the late 1970s and early eighties. I like the look of this kit, though and how it builds up.
Nice job keeping as close as practical to the included tools and paints. Too bad Humbrol let down the rest of the kit. They need to find a better way to include paints besides colored rocks in plastic jars 😜. Great follow up with the other video looking at the improvements made with the directions etc.
Sorry to say but Humbrol was and still the worst paint ever. Long time I have let that brand out of my mind. For common regular paint you will find easily Tamiya is the best
Nice video, thank you. I have just built this as my reintroduction to the hobby and found a few issues. Like you, I found the prop assembly a little challenging, although mine did succumb to brute force to get the pin further in. The included black paint was like tar and was not revived by the addition of thinners, I checked the black on my FW190 kit which was in the same state - Airfix to their credit, replaced both within a week. The upper grey and green paints are odd, mine are much darker than what the box suggests is correct, again I agree with you about quality control. Overall, a pleasant experience, a couple of issues where I thought I knew better than the instructions....
New subscriber here ,I must say I'm loving watching you make the models, you are clear in what you do and to someone like me who suffers with mental health issues it's great to watch ,thank you gor your time in uploading what you do 😊
We used to blow them apart in Yorkshire, circa 1965, using bangers. They were readily available in boxes of 5 and 10, before health and safety kicked in 😂. It was not unusual to fire Roman Candles at each other 😂
@@Deadmau5l although this is a 100% new tooling, they only announced it last year and even made a tv program about the design of it…. Edit: by my estimates this product is at an absolute maximum only 9 months old which adds 3 months to the release date of 6 months ago
@@AreeyaKKC it was announced in 2020, it only got into shelves about 6 months ago. So whilst it’s true the tooling dates from 2020 it took them about 18 months to get the products finalised, manufactured and then out to stockists. Watching the hornby video makes it seem like they didn’t finish the development of the kit until about 12 months ago
Hello Matt, I've been following your channel for a while and I really like it. Specially your trips to Arfix's headoffice. I built this kit in 2016, the tooling is from 2010, according to Scalemates. Surprisingly, my kit came in a plastic bag, pretty much like the old Airfix kits under the name "Project Airfix" molded in blue styrene. About the paints, I believe you could have contacted Airfix and gotten new paints. I once had a problem with the decal sheet and they sent a new one in no time, and I'm from Brazil. Great kit. Alex
You are right that if I contact Airfix customer services that new paints could have been requested, however I didn’t have the time to do that when I was making this video. As for tooling dates, my information in the video is accurate, the kit you are referring to being tooled in 2010 was the Mk1 spitfire that didn’t come with a display stand , this version is a MkVc which is a much more recent tooling as mentioned in the video
Bought this kit as a return to scale modelling after around 30 years (Im 38!) - Though in that time I have continued with my warhammer addiction lol. My propeller shaft was the same, but I just snipped about 5mm off the end of the rod after test fitting provided the same issue you had. Also took quite a bit of force to click into place, so maybe you have to be a bit brutal with it to slide the backing part of the shaft all the way in (thats what she said) My paints were mostly crap too. Colour matched them with the citadel range I already had easy enough. For a beginner though having dried up paints would be pretty sad. Humbrol really need to fix them up. 30 years ago starter sets has the god awful enamel tins which weren't much better as I remember lol! Anywho, bought 4 more kits already...Damn my plastic obsession!
I love these starter sets. Last year I made the Messerschmitt BF109, I did a pretty poor job with it. I've just finished a spitfire and can see a marked improvement in my skill. My girlfriend got me the Revell 1/32 Iron Maiden Spitfire gift set for Christmas. Its skill level 4 so when I pluck up the courage I'll start that. Might build a few more easier kits first
Revell skill levels are misleading - they are purely based off the number of parts in a kit rather than the skill required to build it. For example, a biplane with only 30 parts might be harder to build than a jet with 100.... but the jet will have a higher skill level . . .
Great upload, I picked up alot of tips from your video. I bought this kit a few weeks ago to complete with my six year old son. Unfortunately we ran into a few issues, similarly to you with the paint being dried and rather confusingly the small air intake on the underside of the left wing had failed during the mould injection process. Thanks again.
I bought this kit recently for a quick build, a little bit of fun. Same problem with the prop base which I spotted dry fitting. A bit of filing gave the proper fit. Wing root joints needed a bit of filler to improve the look of the whole thing. Dry paints for me too, disappointing. Thankfully I have quite a few paints to be able to carry on. Only the decals and a radio wire to add and I'm done. Quite an enjoyable build on the whole.

@@ModelMinutes I'm not trying to steal your thunder but I think it makes it easy for viewers to C&P if it's in text form. I'll be going to my nearest model kit shop in the next week or so, armed with this list!
Just bought the BF109-e starter kit as my first ever model, having never got into it as a kid. Sadly, the grey for me was also a dried out squishy lump. Local hobby store to the rescue with some replacements! The propeller on it seems to be ok though. It's just gone in and still spins!
I've just built this as my first kit. All the paints were fine but I had the same problem as you with the propeller. I had to glue it all together so the propeller doesn't spin .
When he talks about the paints just being dried out I just felt normalish this has happened to me many times with airfix’s kits and I’m just glad I’m not the only one
Greetings Model Minutes, Please make another Starter Set video! I've been inspired by your previous starter set videos to buy the Airfix 'Dogfight Doubles' Spitfire & BF-109 kit. Thank you for considering. Cheers from across the pond (I'm American), - A hopeful subscriber
Hi! I’m in the progress of working on the edit of an Airfix Seahawk which came as a starter set, hopefully I’ll get around to finishing that video soon
i did try pushing it in as far as it went, to the point it started to break. If you take a look at the comments lower down, you'll see that this is a common problem with the prop. I believe that it is a design flaw and not something that brute force is the solution to
Very useful video... the end result is very good, and I like the way you haven't messed around with weathering or shading on this one. It's a nice neat finish and you get a good feel for the model from your build and video. However would I go out and buy one for a beginner? Not if the paints are going to let it down so badly.... it's a major issue if a lot of these kits have crap paint; not everyone can walk back to a physical shop to get replacements. I'd also suggest that a couple of small bits of sandpaper in a start kit would be a cheap but useful addition, as would some sort of primer that's easy to apply before using the acrylics? Might add 50p to the cost but allow a much better finish?
A very good tutorial. Thank you. Had the exact same issues with the propeller assembly and the supplied dry paint set. I hope it gets addressed by airfix for the future.
I'm just getting back into the hobby after a 40 year break. While I didn't pick up this particular kit I did choose an Airfix dogfight doubles kit that included a Spitfire, BF 109, and the building supplies. Of the 8 pots of paint in that kit 4 were dried out but salvageable and one had to be binned as it was a brick. The fact that the kit came with the paints, brushes, and glue was the reason I chose it, as I don't have a stash of supplies yet. It was definitely annoying to then have to run to the store for additional paint.
@ModelMinutes thanks. I honestly didn't think to try, but I might do so just to see. Never hurts to have extra paints available. I swung by the hobby store and picked up a small testors acrylics set with black, white, silver, blue, red, and yellow for about $5 on sale. Using that I've been mixing my own. It's worked well so far, and as a bonus I have the silver for landing gear struts and such. Overall I'm impressed with the kit I bought. Fit has been good, the molds are crisp. Hardly needed putty at all. (Picked up a tube of Mr white putty while getting the paints) Like you said in the video, I can see where the paints might have been off putting to a true novice. I'm just 40 years out of practice and working without many tools 😆
Revell starter sets aren't really the same as Airfix ones - they put a "normal" kit in a box with some extra paints and things. Yes, the brush, paint and glue are pretty good in comparison to the Humbrol ones in Airfix boxes, but the model kit is not specifically designed to be "beginner friendly" like the model featured in this video
Back in the 60s I bought one model a week , Living near Standard Fireworks we had access to gunpowder year round , So many of my models suffered major damage . 🙂
Had the same paint problem with my Hurricane starter set! 3 out of 4 bad, with a lot of thinner (or in my case water) needed to make them remotely useful, and it still turned out lumpy. Seems that in both our cases the one paint that was still okay was the one with a hinged lid, perhaps it's the design of the other pots?
I just got this set yesterday. I had the exact same problem with the propeller mount. I solved this problem with brute force by hammering it in. And I didn't break it. 😅 Paints: Green paint pot had signs of seepage around lid edge and was very pasty inside. I used water to thin it out. Black was mostly fine. Haven't opened the other two yet. As a first time modeler in my late 30's I am still happy with this set but I did my research beforehand so I don't know how anyone would fare if they bought this on a whim. The instructions and tips are really good though. Better than Ikea.
I think it was suggested earlier this year to you but could you do a side by side comparison video of doing the same kit but doing one with nothing but what’s in the box, absolute beginner style, and then doing the same kit again but with all your tricks, extra paints, airbrush etc? Think it would be interesting to see the difference
Thank you, good video. Have bought this for my nephew as a present. Will make sure I buy some fresh tinlets of paint and include them, the state of your pots is unacceptable. Please take note Airfix.
Did a spot a small mistake?? At 15:46 when showing the build instructions. Step 2 shows a small part needs to be cut prior to putting together the propeller assembly. Just wanted to know if this happened and if this was why the assembly did not go together as smoothly as you had hoped?? Otherwise another great build 👍
It’s a glue symbol, with the yellow end of the shaft indicating where to place the glue. At no point does Airfix tell you to cut the end of the shaft to get it to fit, I stand by my original assessment that the parts don’t fit together properly. Edit: I helped a friend build this exact kit yesterday and experienced the same problem on their kit too
the propeller assembly, @15:47 in the video you show the instruction sheet, looks like it says to remove a section of the shaft. i might be wrong though. anyway cracking build
its not a cut symbol, it's a glue symbol with the yellow marks telling you where to put the glue. It makes no reference of cutting any of the parts in this build
Good video. I dark wash would accentuate all the panel lines. A small bit of weathering increases realism. Too bad some of the kit paint was bad. Nice work around. Bill
I built this model yesterday with my 4-year old. Only my 3rd model after 15 years hiatus. Easy enough to assemble, but i had the same problem with the propeller, i did not spot it before i had glued it together, so now it is all wobbly. I now contemplate if i should just glue the propeller solid. The paints seems to be liquid, but i have not painted the exterior yet
Just building mine at the moment and have motorised the prop. Yes a bit of a mod on the prop required, and my paints were dried out ,I contacted Airfix and they sent me gen 2 dropper bottles regards fred ps I like the stand ideal for a mini display 👌😎☕️
i got this model on Christmas, i loved it also 3:45 i pushed it so much it cracked the piece a bit, but it still worked and didnt break completely, ig i got lucky
Those dried paints are a downer. Starter sets are always interesting, and, in my opinion, definitvely present a good choice for simple weekend/holiday/on the road builds.
Had the Then and Now Spitfire VC and F35 set for Christmas, and guess what, the same problem with the prop shaft.Ended up sanding the shaft down...but what a drag, and with problems with short shots on other kits,Airfix quality control is leaving alot to be desired...
The little human no4 came across the same issue with the propeller boss as you did , he sorted it by trimming the end of the shaft off a little at a time
Good idea! I helped my friend build this one recently and our solution was to cut about 3 or 4mm off the end, then sand down the thickness of the shaft until it sat properly
I'm working on the Hawker Typhoon 1B starter kit and I also had 1 colour totally dried out. But this is the 4 th starter kit I'm working at and its the first time I have dried out paint on a total of 24 different colours. Luckily I could mix the right colour from others I already have, I don't think its very common to find dried out paint in a kit.
I helped a friend build this exact kit yesterday (they got one as a gift) and all their paints were dried out in theirs. I dont think older starter sets are as affected, but it would seem that these new ones have all got issues with the paints - looking through the comments it seems others with this kit have also had dry paints
Had the same tight fit on the propeller components that showed up on dry fitting so that could definitely be toleranced a little looser. The stand hole is where the landing light is so I don't find that too bad.
Enamel paints are good. Although a small 14ml tin is 2.14 or more, they do last a while and don't dry out as much. They do take a while to dry though. Over night for it to properaly dry out
@@SkyAceGaming I think the angle of the two parts is slightly wrong, the "plug" that goes into the "socket" has the exact same angle which causes it to get stuck too early - if it had a shallower angle it would reach all the way in
Try using Tamiya extra thin (Light green top) to loosen parts that have been cemented together. Depend on how much cement had been applied and how long the parts have been left for the cement to cure, so it isn't guaranteed to work, but most times I find it helps.
Oh dear, I have the Dogfight doubles 1:48 scale kit that I was looking at starting soon and I'm worried about the state of the paints now! I know for me that when I purchased that kit, the fact it had the needed paints included was a big selling point, and I'm sure it's the same for many people who get these all inclusive sets. I think that is a huge issue for a beginner set and definitely needs addressing. The rest of the kit looks great though, and it turned out very nicely.
I think older Airfix kits have fairly useable paints, I just opened up a 10 year old one for example and those paints were mostly all still liquid, so yours might be fine
@@ModelMinutes That's good to know. I checked out all my included paints and while a coupe were definitely on the pasty side they thankfully aren't too far gone. I wonder if it's just luck of the draw whether you get any duds or not.
It's the same tooling so I would not be surprised - I haven't tried the other non-starter set tooling of the Spitfire Vc yet so not sure if that version has the same problem
Nice escupefuego. Looks like the acrylic paints they pack with the starter sets are of lower quality than the Humbrol line of acrylics. I will look for the plain kit without cheap tools or paints.
I found the prop assy ok. Just needed to be pushed in a bit harder than you did. The real let down was the paints. Mine like yours were dried out but even then the top colours green and grey were so dark you couldn't tell them apart. I had to go to my local model shop to buy replacements in a better colour. I messaged Airfix about my issue who took 3 weeks to reply saying they would send me out some replacements...obviously by this time the model had been competed.
I had the same problem with an airfix starter kit (Bf-109E3) and one of the paints was dry (RLM 65). I had to do this color from a mix of other acrylic paints.
That humbrol 30 dark green appears to have far too much yellow pigment added, unless the other pigment that makes up the colour had run out/not dispensed enough to make the colour correct. As for the issues with the others, that is shocking for a kit that only hit the shops in late summer!
my dad gave me some paints that are over 15 years old and we only threw away two. one because we couldn't get it open and the other because it ran out. to be fair they were mostly Humbrol enamels or Tamiya acrylics. the last kit gift sets/starter sets I got had one paint each that had dried up. I tried to fix the first one but accidentally turned it into a wash. by the way, in New Zealand, the only type of Humbrol paints you can get are enamels and it's hard to find thinners for them. but if you use Tamiya, the majority are acrylics. it's weird. the only acrylic products by Humbrol are rail colour(and there a very few) and the range called clear. and the gloss in that is hard to find(clear is a varnish range)

Do you have any suggestions for our second project as this is very new to us?
@ any of the starter sets that come with paint are a good choice as an introduction to modelling
If you do have problems with paints being dry when you purchase a similar product from Airfix, contacting the spares department could help resolve that
I'm glad my content has helped you in some way :D
I've been looking forward to this review, a Spitfire has been a potential project in the back of my mind for some time now. And of course, I left a like and a comment.
Hope you enjoy it!
You can never have enough Spitfires. Loved the build :)
Haha, yeah . . i do have a few left to do
I got my first airfix kit when I was seven and it was a spitfire starter kit that my grandad got me. I built half the cockpit and was thoroughly enjoying it but the I found most paints had dried up and were not even the correct colours. This really through me of and the next kit I built was 4 years later and I got properly into the hobby, this time I had to get vellejo paints as it wasn't a starter. Basically, dry paint can really throw you off.
i agree, dry paint is not a good experience
When you soaked the entire decal sheet, you brought back memories of my earliest days in this hobby as I used to do the same thing back then! But I didn't have the presence of mind to actually cut the sheet after having done so - that came a bit later after I built my first Tamiya kit and talked to a friend who had been building them since he was really young (I was 11 years old at the time). Airfix's instructions for decal placement were to my mind very vague for a child to understand back in the late 1970s and early eighties. I like the look of this kit, though and how it builds up.
haha, yeah, sometimes I just do the whole sheet for speeed (unless there are loads on there)
Nice job keeping as close as practical to the included tools and paints. Too bad Humbrol let down the rest of the kit. They need to find a better way to include paints besides colored rocks in plastic jars 😜. Great follow up with the other video looking at the improvements made with the directions etc.
Thanks! Yes, i was rather disappointed by the paints. Everything else is spot on for a beginner kit though
Thanks for watching! It is a bit disappointing that so many people have had similar issues as me though
New subscriber here ,I must say I'm loving watching you make the models, you are clear in what you do and to someone like me who suffers with mental health issues it's great to watch ,thank you gor your time in uploading what you do 😊
Thanks for watching! I'm glad my videos are helpful
"Who wants to wait a few days to throw it down the stairs, or out of a window" 😂 Don't forget the ever popular blowing it up with firecrackers.
Firecrackers aren’t really a thing here in the uk, so I think just lighting them on fire was what we did
We used to blow them apart in Yorkshire, circa 1965, using bangers. They were readily available in boxes of 5 and 10, before health and safety kicked in 😂. It was not unusual to fire Roman Candles at each other 😂
Kind of unacceptable for airfix to be sending out bad paint in a 2020 tooling.
Nice build.
Exactly
The chances are its not even a 2020 set its just been put into a 2020 tooling box. It seems to be a common thing happening recently
@@Deadmau5l although this is a 100% new tooling, they only announced it last year and even made a tv program about the design of it….
Edit: by my estimates this product is at an absolute maximum only 9 months old which adds 3 months to the release date of 6 months ago
@@ModelMinutes scalemates shows it as a new 2020 tooling
Also took quite a bit of force to click into place, so maybe you have to be a bit brutal with it to slide the backing part of the shaft all the way in (thats what she said)
My paints were mostly crap too.
Welcome back to the club! :P
That turned out really nice.
Thanks 😊
I love these starter sets. Last year I made the Messerschmitt BF109, I did a pretty poor job with it. I've just finished a spitfire and can see a marked improvement in my skill. My girlfriend got me the Revell 1/32 Iron Maiden Spitfire gift set for Christmas. Its skill level 4 so when I pluck up the courage I'll start that. Might build a few more easier kits first
Revell skill levels are misleading - they are purely based off the number of parts in a kit rather than the skill required to build it. For example, a biplane with only 30 parts might be harder to build than a jet with 100.... but the jet will have a higher skill level . . .
@@ModelMinutes Thats good to hear, Think ill make a start on it this weekend
I just ordered this kit, I can't wait to give it a go after watching this!
Hope you enjoy it!
This was rhe first ever model i built it was so much fun and would do it over 10000 times again
Good to know you enjoyed it 😊
Great upload, I picked up alot of tips from your video. I bought this kit a few weeks ago to complete with my six year old son. Unfortunately we ran into a few issues, similarly to you with the paint being dried and rather confusingly the small air intake on the underside of the left wing had failed during the mould injection process.
Thanks again.
Shame to hear that - if you contact the airfix spares department via their website they might be able to send out a spare part
Quite an enjoyable build on the whole.
thanks for sharing your experiences :)
I bought this starter set for a friend at Christmas and we’re going to have a kit-building day today. I’ll look out for the issues you report.
I hope you enjoy!

I'm not trying to steal your thunder but I think it makes it easy for viewers to C&P if it's in text form.
I'll be going to my nearest model kit shop in the next week or so, armed with this list!
@@gerrycoogan6544 the list is more of a suggestion really, feel free to get alternative colours or brands
Just bought the BF109-e starter kit as my first ever model, having never got into it as a kid. Sadly, the grey for me was also a dried out squishy lump. Local hobby store to the rescue with some replacements! The propeller on it seems to be ok though. It's just gone in and still spins!
The prop on the bf109 has a different mounting system
I've just built this as my first kit. All the paints were fine but I had the same problem as you with the propeller. I had to glue it all together so the propeller doesn't spin .
That’s a shame
When he talks about the paints just being dried out I just felt normalish this has happened to me many times with airfix’s kits and I’m just glad I’m not the only one
it's sad when having dry paints becomes "normal", companies should do everything they can to get those paints to us in a useable condition
Glad I wasn’t the only one who had issues with the prop assembly
seems like its a common issue
4:00 I decided to gently hit the two halves of the propeller together when I built mine, it seemed to work without damaging and of the parts.
thanks for the info!
Greetings Model Minutes,
Please make another Starter Set video! I've been inspired by your previous starter set videos to buy the Airfix 'Dogfight Doubles' Spitfire & BF-109 kit.
Thank you for considering.
Cheers from across the pond (I'm American),

Hi! I’m in the progress of working on the edit of an Airfix Seahawk which came as a starter set, hopefully I’ll get around to finishing that video soon
fantastic build and honest review , well done as always 👍👍👌👌
Thank you! Cheers!
i’ve got a hawk t1 model with a stand and it uses the engine outlet for the stand
Yes, that is a good design feature
the prop part you have to push it in so clips. there will be slight stress marks after but it then fits and spins.
i did try pushing it in as far as it went, to the point it started to break. If you take a look at the comments lower down, you'll see that this is a common problem with the prop. I believe that it is a design flaw and not something that brute force is the solution to
I had the same issue with the prop - shaft assembly. But I found that if you give it a firm squeeze, it will snap together with no need for glue.
You must be stronger than me, i couldn't get it to go in at all lol
@@ModelMinutes The way it 'pop's into place suggests Airfix designed it this way. It's like a one way barb. Once it clicks home, it won't come apart.
I shall be starting first model in 15 year's next week! Great video👍
Good luck
Those are some really great points!
A very good tutorial. Thank you. Had the exact same issues with the propeller assembly and the supplied dry paint set. I hope it gets addressed by airfix for the future.
Whilst I'm glad i'm not the only one who had these issues, it's certainly a shame that these issues exist!
Great job i need to get back to planes i haven't build one for years
:D
I'm just getting back into the hobby after a 40 year break. While I didn't pick up this particular kit I did choose an Airfix dogfight doubles kit that included a Spitfire, BF 109, and the building supplies. Of the 8 pots of paint in that kit 4 were dried out but salvageable and one had to be binned as it was a brick.
The fact that the kit came with the paints, brushes, and glue was the reason I chose it, as I don't have a stash of supplies yet. It was definitely annoying to then have to run to the store for additional paint.
if you contact the Airfix spares/customer services department they might have been able to source a replacement paint for you
@ModelMinutes thanks.
(Picked up a tube of Mr white putty while getting the paints)
Like you said in the video, I can see where the paints might have been off putting to a true novice. I'm just 40 years out of practice and working without many tools 😆
I'd like to see you do a revell starter kit challenge. That way you can see wich is the better brand to start of with ;D
sounds . . explosive lol
I bought one of these a couple months back and I to also had the same problem with the propeller being loose.
yeah it seems to be a common fault
Had the same paint problem with my Hurricane starter set! 3 out of 4 bad, with a lot of thinner (or in my case water) needed to make them remotely useful, and it still turned out lumpy. Seems that in both our cases the one paint that was still okay was the one with a hinged lid, perhaps it's the design of the other pots?
Yes, i believe airfix are aware of a design problem with the new pots, which let air leak in and dry the paints
Would still buy this kit down the line as like the spitfire models and still gains me flying hours for when i finally got enough of them
The kit is good as a starter set, just the quality control on the paints was disap
I just got this set yesterday. I had the exact same problem with the propeller mount. I solved this problem with brute force by hammering it in. And I didn't break it. 😅
Paints: Green paint pot had signs of seepage around lid edge and was very pasty inside. I used water to thin it out. Black was mostly fine.
Haven't opened the other two yet.
As a first time modeler in my late 30's I am still happy with this set but I did my research beforehand so I don't know how anyone would fare if they bought this on a whim. The instructions and tips are really good though. Better than Ikea.
thanks for letting me know!
I think it was suggested earlier this year to you but could you do a side by side comparison video of doing the same kit but doing one with nothing but what’s in the box, absolute beginner style, and then doing the same kit again but with all your tricks, extra paints, airbrush etc? Think it would be interesting to see the difference
Great idea!
Thank you, good video. Have bought this for my nephew as a present. Will make sure I buy some fresh tinlets of paint and include them, the state of your pots is unacceptable. Please take note Airfix.
Great idea! It is a shame that those paints were no good though, kinda defeats the point of including them
Did a spot a small mistake?? At 15:46 when showing the build instructions. Step 2 shows a small part needs to be cut prior to putting together the propeller assembly. Just wanted to know if this happened and if this was why the assembly did not go together as smoothly as you had hoped??
Otherwise another great build 👍
It’s a glue symbol, with the yellow end of the shaft indicating where to place the glue. At no point does Airfix tell you to cut the end of the shaft to get it to fit, I stand by my original assessment that the parts don’t fit together properly.
Edit: I helped a friend build this exact kit yesterday and experienced the same problem on their kit too
Turned out nicely.
thanks :D
I did have the same problem with the propeller not fitting correctly
thanks for the info!
Bought this kit for my 12 year old who wants to get into model making, we had exactly the same propellor issue as you experienced
I think the simplest way to fix it is to cut a bit off the end of the pin, and then sand it down a little
Cracking build mate, I had issues with both paints and the spinner as well. Although I'll probably forget later lol. Fun build tho
Thanks! Good to know it wasnt just me!
Spitfire is my favorite plane
the propeller assembly, @15:47 in the video you show the instruction sheet, looks like it says to remove a section of the shaft. i might be wrong though. anyway cracking build
its not a cut symbol, it's a glue symbol with the yellow marks telling you where to put the glue. It makes no reference of cutting any of the parts in this build
Good video. I dark wash would accentuate all the panel lines. A small bit of weathering increases realism. Too bad some of the kit paint was bad. Nice work around.
Bill
thanks!
Hi - I've just completed the same model, and yes, I had the same problem with the propeller 😢
Oh no!
The paints seems to be liquid, but i have not painted the exterior yet
thanks for letting me know, sorry to hear that you had trouble with it
Just building mine at the moment and have motorised the prop. Yes a bit of a mod on the prop required, and my paints were dried out ,I contacted Airfix and they sent me gen 2 dropper bottles regards fred ps I like the stand ideal for a mini display 👌😎☕️
sounds pretty cool!
Great video mate!!!
Thanks 😊
i got this model on Christmas, i loved it
also 3:45 i pushed it so much it cracked the piece a bit, but it still worked and didnt break completely, ig i got lucky
glad you enjoyed the model!
Mine had the loose propeller mount too
Thanks for letting me know, glad it wasn’t just me
Poundland rattle can primer does a great job
😊
I have just completed this kit and the issue with the propeller was the exact same in mine. Good video though so thanks
Thanks for letting me know! Glad I’m not the only one who had this problem
Those dried paints are a downer. Starter sets are always interesting, and, in my opinion, definitvely present a good choice for simple weekend/holiday/on the road builds.
They do, it’s just a shame it wasn’t as good as it could be
Had the Then and Now Spitfire VC and F35 set for Christmas, and guess what, the same problem with the prop shaft.Ended up sanding the shaft down...but what a drag, and with problems with short shots on other kits,Airfix quality control is leaving alot to be desired...
Generally it seems the kits coming from India tend to have the QC issues, the product lines made in the UK don't appear to be affected
I had the same issue with the propeller, and as I was gluing it on you told me that you shouldn't glue it on.
ah, yes, it would stop it from spinning otherwise
@@ModelMinutes I ended up making it so it didn't spin but it's alright
I had the same issue with the paint, that blue-ish colour was grey and I had no thinners at the time so I was stuck, the model was great though! :)
I think that humbrol are aware of the issue and are looking at resolving it
Had the same tight fit on the propeller components that showed up on dry fitting so that could definitely be toleranced a little looser. The stand hole is where the landing light is so I don't find that too bad.
It seems odd, sounds like a lot of people had trouble with that propeller
I had the issue with the spinner and the black mark on the wing you had on the other mark 5
strange isnt it
You did show the instructions at the end and I think there was a cutting symbol at the propellershaft, was there?
It’s not a cut symbol but an instruction on where to place the glue
Much potential for superdetailing/scratchbuilding
True, probably the “normal “ version of the kit would be a better starting point as that has (supposedly) more detail
Could anyone recommend paints for airfix kits as whenever I order starter kits the paints always come dry just like these ones.
Enamel paints are good. Although a small 14ml tin is 2.14 or more, they do last a while and don't dry out as much. They do take a while to dry though. Over night for it to properaly dry out
Vallejo or Tamiya are pretty good, search online for conversion tables
@@ModelMinutes What about Xtracolour's acrylic paints? Years ago they had a wide amount of colours, more so than Humbrol's.
Tamiya are good
For brush painting acrylics revell aqua. Or vallejo model colors (model air, for ease of color compare)
Fourth 4 can’t wait looks like a good one
:D
I had the same problem with the propeller
Seems to be a common fault
Why did this happen
@@SkyAceGaming I think the angle of the two parts is slightly wrong, the "plug" that goes into the "socket" has the exact same angle which causes it to get stuck too early - if it had a shallower angle it would reach all the way in
Try using Tamiya extra thin (Light green top) to loosen parts that have been cemented together.
Depend on how much cement had been applied and how long the parts have been left for the cement to cure, so it isn't guaranteed to work, but most times I find it helps.
I've used this method a few times but like you say, it won't do much if the parts are really welded together
@@JC_WT I think they changed supplier recently which has been bad for quality
Can't wait for my first kit in year's
nice!
All Airfix Spitfire Mk.5c across the whole range have the same propeller problem. Even in the dogfight doubles set I had the same issue.
Yeah, definitely worth getting different paints
I never knew there where 2 solutions to aid decal application. Yep, I'm a novice but interested with a spitfire 1/72 to start on.
It depends on the brand of the setting solution, some are "single" whereas the microscale is "double" step
I found the prop assy ok. Just needed to be pushed in a bit harder than you did. The real let down was the paints. Mine like yours were dried out but even then the top colours green and grey were so dark you couldn't tell them apart. I had to go to my local model shop to buy replacements in a better colour. I messaged Airfix about my issue who took 3 weeks to reply saying they would send me out some replacements...obviously by this time the model had been competed.
it would seem the QC regarding the paints has been a bit poor
i actually have one coming in the mail rn, i’m pretty eager to build it
awesome!
I had the same problem with an airfix starter kit (Bf-109E3) and one of the paints was dry (RLM 65). I had to do this color from a mix of other acrylic paints.
its a real pain when the paints are no good
That humbrol 30 dark green appears to have far too much yellow pigment added, unless the other pigment that makes up the colour had run out/not dispensed enough to make the colour correct. As for the issues with the others, that is shocking for a kit that only hit the shops in late summer!
I agree! I honestly can’t get my head around these issues…
Quick queston. Can you use other color primers like brown or yellow?
Yes, but generally those colours are more suitable for other top-layer colours as they may affect the opacity
I had problems with the propeller too.
I think everyone has
How you could use kamiya paints with brush??
I find tamiya brushes on quite nicely as long as you thin it and leave enough time for it to dry between layers
@@ModelMinutes thanks 🙏🏽
Did you use Tamiya thinner right ?
@@adriancabrera3014 yeah, X20A
Nice. I Norge. Er det butikker i Oslo . Der man kan få tak i, det man trenger. Fra første sett. Og til man blir, viderekomne ? Takk
i'm sure that there probably are model shops in Oslo, being in the UK I'm not sure where though
my dad gave me some paints that are over 15 years old and we only threw away two. one because we couldn't get it open and the other because it ran out. to be fair they were mostly Humbrol enamels or Tamiya acrylics. the last kit gift sets/starter sets I got had one paint each that had dried up.
I used to use enamels all the time, but much prefer acrylics now - humbrol does seem to be hard to get here in the UK at times too
