I saw Johnny Cash in NYC in 1978 when I was 19 he was standing in front of a building with another guy - I asked him for an autograph and he asked me what I’d do with it … I was so nervous because he was my all time favorite singer - Anyway, he knew I was nervous and started kidding around with me making me feel comfortable - He was a super nice, very big guy and shook my hand telling me to “be careful this city can be a dangerous place” - Amazing man his autograph still hangs on my wall.

I never realized till just now what a legend Johnny Cash was. Such a giant of a man but still so humble and approachable. He was one of the all time greats.
He was larger than life since I heard of him in the 60's. Believe he's the only country artist in the RnR HOF.
He broke down a huge barrier between country and rock.
He made it okay to like both.
He defies genre. He's country. He's rock & roll. He's folk. He's music. And he's one of the few artists who owned every single song he covered. Rusty Cage is one of my favorite Soundgarden songs but Johnny and the Heartbreakers killed it. Chris played it Johnny's way at his solo shows.
Johnny Cash was and still is a legend. He had everything. Good looks, a great voice and a desire to entertain us. He came along and rocked the world.

When I was 12 year old my bestfriends dad, (Joel) was dying of cancer (1979). He loved Waylon Jennings. Waylon heard about Joel Jackson (his biggest fan) it was in the local paper. Waylon had both his tour buses drive to Raleigh. He parked one in front of my house, and the other in front of Joel's house. He sat with Joel for about an hour. Joel placed away a few hours later. My mother wouldn't let me go meet him. 10 years later I met him and Jesse Colter. The most humble famous people I've ever met😇

I met Waylon in 1982. It was an outdoor event. A security guard asked me if I wanted to see where his bus would arrive? I said, "sure." He took me where these bushes were with a table. The spot was obscure. Sure enough Waylon's bus pulled in & out he came between the bushes. A crowd started to gather. He walked up to me & with his hand extended he said, "Hi there little girl (I was 25 years old), how are you?" I shook his hand, trying to think of something intelligent to say but all that came out was; " I'm fine thank you Mr. Jennings. " Then he tipped his hat & said; "The name's Waylon." From that day on whenever I have been addressed by my last name, I say; " The name's Peggy. " It was a humbling experience. I'm no better than he is was my thought. He was very respectful & kind. Although, it was moment in time it's great memory. Thank you Waylon. Godspeed to you & Johnny & June Cash. 🙏💞🙏

That was an awesome story and I am so jealous lol. i'm 53 and i remember when i was around 16 playing my drum sticks on my dresser to the dukes of hazzard theme song. I was a hugh country music kid even tho i came from a city in NJ well when i finally seen a video of waylon singing the dukes song i was so blown away!!! all these years that was his hand playing the guitar lmao... well since then i was a fan, waylon and willie cant get any better! thanks! walt

I felt a bit bad thinking the same, hes older than my parents, but gosh he was gorgeous. He had the cheeky naughty boy personality with a handsome face, and quite tall too. Very attractive man in every sense. Its not surprising that he had many women in his younger years. Jessi certainly was one heck of a woman.

I had the pleasure of meeting Johnny Cash at the Orange County Fair, in the early 90's I was working security and after the show Johnny Cash invited everyone to eat. It was like a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, so much food, and I couldn't believe it. The coolest guy, man, entertainer, I have met a lot of singers, entertainers ,actors, celebrities, and some I forgot, but all never forget this Man, he had a heart of gold! Me, I was raised by a USMC, and ive learned a lot from my father, and I learned something from this great man! Thank You R.I.P.

I watched a video of an interview with his wife Jesse and a comment she said about him I will always remember. She said, " no matter who's song he sings, he Waylonizes it." He sure did have an incredible voice.

That’s perfect. He’s probably the coolest looking and sounding human of all time. The DUDE just expels “cool” from everywhere. He and Merle were my dad’s favorite singers. And I was so into being a cowboy growing up. These guys were the soundtrack to my childhood. I remember a few of these interviews. So thankful to live in an age where I can go back and watch this stuff at will.

I miss Johnny and Waylen.. watching 👀 that show makes me feel better 😌 I have been sober for 4 years now 😅 and now I have my little hummingbird who wouldn't be here if I didn't stop using.. my wife stuck with me and my son has to be the best kid I could have ever hoped for so.. God is good all the time 🙏 and prayers are answered in time.. the man in Black's music still shows me new things to this day.. and highwaymen is the greatest song of allllll Time

At 22:00 , it’s easy to tell that Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings are truly happy to see each other and consider it a pleasure and privilege to sing with each other. Respect is overflowing. Two legends in their own right. Can only imagine the late nights drinking and singing.

Kristina Omalley, Waylon is buried in the Mesa, Arizona cemetery. He and his wife of 33 years, Jessi Colter, had moved from Nashville, Tennessee to the Mesa, Arizona area several years before Waylon’s death in 2002. Jessi still resides there.

When I was 14 (a very long time ago) I babysat for a woman who worked in a bar called the Palomino in North Hollywood. Johnny Cash had a gig there and I begged her to sneak me in to see him. I have been to 200+ concerts in my life but seeing Johnny Cash in that small place was truly the highlight of my life!

I saw Johnny’s last show in sf at the Fillmore in 1994. One of the best shows I ever saw. June came out and played about 4 songs.
That's awesome, I never saw Johnny but have seen many country artists, including Hank Jr., Brad Paisley, Terri Clark among others
...but my highlight was seeing
Merle Haggard, he was so honed and perfectly polished as a musician that listening to him live was like listening to one of his CD's.
No mistakes, no fumbles and in perfect pitch. So smooth.
We here in Canada had a bar and tavern called the palomino to as well ad opry north
My grandmother was a head bar maid / bar manager by todays terms in a huge night club back in the road house days in the 70's they had national acts about once a month. Great bands every Friday and Saturday night but the big guys once a month. I met Gary Pucket there. the Jaggerz right after their big hit The Rapper, the Rascals and a few other notables. I went in the after noon with her to get it ready and they were bringing their gear in and sound checking. I got to meet them all in owners office on a very personal level. I wanted to play a guitar and be a rock star. lol they did give me some good advice and i had a lot of fun playing music in the bars and roadhouses until I was close to 40 and i also worked in show business as a stage technician. eventually i was making a living mixing sound and things like that so I gave up playing music on the weekends because I really had no choice as i had to choose between one or the other. as music happens on the weekends for the most part. those were great days. I got gig mixing sound every Saturday night on a live radio broadcast in a 2300 seat theatre. I was knocking down some cash as there were lots of other shows there also on the other days. Been doing it all my life. show business is great business but right now this damn cornona virus covid 19 has killed live shows as well as a lot of people. i never thought i would see the day the music died. But I damn sure am living it right now.
I believe that fantastic group THE HIGHWAY MEN was one of the BEST 'boy bands' to have graced a stage. Each personality was an integral part of the collection. As a showcase for each singer it couldn't have been better. I miss them all. ❤ 😢

God that is still rare and was even rarer at that time for someone to open up and speak so honestly and directly about their drug use. Johnny Cash was the real deal.

What a couple of legitimate musical legends. Real people from the country singing music about their lives in their own unique and creative ways. No fake ass southern accents and drinking beer on a tailgate song. Smart and badass DUDES, and June’s performance was absolutely lovely. Dave was great on this show. Always so funny and welcoming to all kinds of guests. I’d think Paul and his kickass band probably had a hand in getting such musical guest on the show. Thanks for this video. It brings back a ton of great memories of a couple of grown ass men that this country could use about now. Rest easy to all of those who have moved on.
I hope Johnny and Waylon realized by telling their story they saved people lives, and got sober. And sad for the ones that didn't win!

Truly. Met him once my Dad was a huge fan and took us to a concert in Omaha. Waylon kept glancing at Dad and a stage hand came out at the end and asked us to come backstage..we got to meet him because he said he thought Dad was George Jones (this happened to Dad a lot) and then as they got to talking, my Dad's reply to the mistaken identity was always "no but I do have a thing for Tammy Wynette" Waylon kept asking Dad if he sang because Dad had a deep, gravelly voice that made you take notice when he spoke. Dad never sang, but they did have a few drinks together and we had pics taken. I was about 7 and got to sit on Waylon's knee. A special memory. Dad is gone now but when I listen to Waylon I hear my Dad's voice again.😊

I got a six and eight year old running around past their bedtimes while this is playing. Like when I was their age at grandmas house.
Halfway through you see the vitality both Waylon and Johnny got from sobriety. As they aged they looked serene and truly enjoying life.
The fact that they're candid about their drug use says everything about their character.
Cash said on his Johnny Cash Show that "Waylon's a good friend and if he likes you, hell let you know it.....If he don't like you, he'll let you know that too"

I saw an amazing performance by Waylon Jennings in 1973 in San Francisco, he opened for the Grateful Dead😳. That’s the brilliance of promoter Bill Graham, to expose people to all kinds of music
About 1980 saw Charlie Daniels open for heart at cow palace. Also attended mahogany rush, gamma, and Marshall Tucker band there. Weird but worked.

When Dave spoke of the enormity of seeing these gentlemen walking toward him. Just Johnny Cash in the black outfit would make you shake in your boots. Johnny and Waylon were some bad ass dudes.

Got on to his one foot and never complained ,was down on his luck with nothing .a saint came along and got him out of bed and back singing ,his money situation improved ,what a man !!😀😀😀he survived.His lovely wife coaxed him to regain confidance. Taken to soon ,jhonny too. What a loss.poor kris Kristofferson loved and adored Johnny Cash😀I think he went to pieces at his death ,he missed these two highwaymen ,johnny and Waylon .Kris slowly backed away from his music,The word retire he did not use, not that I rec,all just a salute at end of his last show😭😭😭😭😭😭 we fans miss him please give us a life book on all of your travels ,escapades, ups downs, heartaches .mabey a few more new songs. I never got to see Johnny Cash. When Waylon came out I got chills.
God did Waylon have a voice. Just plain speaking and I’m mesmerized. Both men are such unique and talented people that it’s impossible to ever beat. Today’s country just don’t cut it in my opinion.
When you spend so much time with these guys through their music and now there gone it can be a little emotional seeing them sitting there.

When I was 10 years old, my Dad and I eating a hamburger in a greasy spoon cafe across from Sun Studio, Johnny Cash and a fellow who looked like Waylon walked in and sat down for some coffee and cigs. Seeing him on Dave's show is really great.

Johnny was friends with Elvis too. One or two times I heard of when Elvis played vegas he would sing a couple of johnnys songs and say this is for my friend Johnny cash.

I saw Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan at a concert they had together. First Willie played, then Bob played. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
I saw bob Dylan open for Paul Simon, and between sets, they sang acoustic Johnny Cash songs. It was unreal!
Man, Waylon's songwriting and performing is just legendary.

Minor correction: Waylon gave his seat to the Big Bopper because the big man was sick. Tommy Alsop lost his seat on the plane to Richie Valens on the result of a coin toss.

The difference in Waylon between the first appearance and the second is huge. Knowing what it feels like to be deep in the shit, desperate, denying it and out of control, and then to be sober, that feeling when you get your clarity and energy back is worth every pain you go through to get there.
Also noticeable in Richard Pryor when he got sober in the 1980s.
I'm not anti-drug, but I can say with authority that they can sneak up on you and become your life without notice.

For anybody that grew up before computers and smartphones or even cable there was definitely some boredom and loneliness, but also time for self reflection and soul building. We’re missing that today in fact it’s being weaned right out of American society. Money is king. It’s sad. These guys definitely were not about the money. They were about embracing their fellow man and woman through song. Amen to that.
