Ed Curtis I was 13 and my family was moving to Hawaii from Kansas. We made a stoop in California to spend some time with family there. I met a 16 year old John Fountain who was actually my mother's cousin. I had just discovered so-called "Black music" in "white Bread", "Hutchinson, Kansas. I had discovered "Little" Richard" on the juke box in my grandfather's bar and The Penguins. I had seen Elvis through all of his performances of 1956 I liked him because he was different. John Fountain could not believe I had never heard J.R. and he played me "I Walk The Line", "Cry, Cry, Cry" and "Get Rhythm". I have been a fan ever since. I really liked "Get Rhythm" because at 13 I could already do the deep baritone with J.R. on the line, "I said you're a mighty little boy to be "a-workin' that way." I only saw him once, in the Fall of 1967 and what a show. I have the video of "HURT" and watch it 3-4 times every year. R.I.P. J.R. , Your fans will always remember...........................

I grew up in Hendersonville, Tn home of the man in black. I am just proud of my first job working at Spur gas station, when I got to pump gas, clean windows and check the oil etc. for Johnny Cash. He was always so humble. He was friendly and kind to me and never acted like a big star. He was always driving the "One Piece at a Time" car that is in the museum now. And, I ran into him a few times at the movie theatre. I only saw him perform live once at the fairgrounds. But, I can tell you for sure he was much more charismatic in person. He almost always wore a black shirt or jacket. But, might have jeans on. I did see him with a light blue shirt and jacket a couple of times during the winter. My best friend's sister was friends with his daughter Rosy Nix and would spend the night at his house and tell me about all the trains and water allegedly flowing down a rock wall. That is all I know. I wish I had known him better.
Jonny is with June in Heaven that I am sure of. He joined her not long after her death both now are side by side in Heaven singing songs to entertain God and his Angels. Rest in Heaven both of you.

The pain he lived clung on to him just like a cloak, heavy with grief, just as the drugs he met down that road, thank God for June when he walked the line and ring of fire.. That's why the Father sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die on the cross for us, to pay the price for our sins. We are saved by our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and not by works. I was at Johhny Cash's performance in Auckland, New Zealand in 1970 and Baby John was only a few months old. Amazing man Johnny is. Loved the concert as well. Statler Brothers were there with him.
I got a Johnny Cash cassette when I was about 11 from my parents, God only knows why they thought I'd like it. (It was around 1998). But I did and listened that tape to shreds. By the time Hurt came out I was a teenager and I lost faith in all the music industry and media all-together, seeing that it's all fake. One day my brother told me that Johnny Cash died, and asked if I saw the video for Hurt. I watched it and I just sat there and cried for ten minutes. It was no coincidence that I liked that tape so much all those years ago. The reason everyone loves Johnny is because he was REAL. Something we miss desperately these days.

I watched this video all the way through. It was tastefully done. I laughed and I cried 😭. My emotions were up and down. I have always loved ❤ Johnny Cash. I am 83 years old so I was alive during his heyday. I believe he and Elvis Presley were my all time favorite enter- trainers. His life was the most interesting of all the stars in my estimation. I agree that he was one of the last Great 👍 Americans. I cried during the video where he did the song "Hurt" but I understood why he wrote it. I am looking forward to seeing he and June in Heaven. John Cash and my Father share the same birthday - February 26th. John was four years older than my Dad. Dad loved Johnny Cash. One of the first songs I remember listening to on my Dad's car radio was Jackson. :) This is excellent documentary. Thank you for sharing.

I worked nightshift as an RN in prison. The day he died, when I got off at 5;30 am, the radio was playing a tribute to him. I drove out inthe Country and kept going3, unable to go home. I cried so hard I had to pull over twice. I'll never forget how3 EVERYTHING was so Acute and life felt different after the awakening I felt. He's still one-of- my favorites. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel also and followed Johnny from the beginning in the 50's and still to this day and this Documentary was a fitting History of this great American and his music will live on forever.

I grew up with Country and Rock & Roll, Cash and Orbison were campions of music. Cash only had to walk on stage or in a room and he owned it. Orbison could write songs that were super hits but no one could sing them because they didn't have the range of Orbison, he didn't think he could sing but he was forced to start and showcase his songs. I met John once in the airport in Nashville BNA. I always got in early to get a good seat before they were assigned ahead. John walked in and saw this quite guy sitting by himself at the gate and he came over and said, "Hello I'm ... and I said, "Johnny Cash". He just smiled and said that's funny it's my name too. I must have turned 20 shades of RED, trying to explain he was my favorite singer. Ever! He was as humble as if he was just regular people which I guess he was.
You're right about Roy. He took me under his wing as a performer and he ( the early 80's) was still in denial about his incredible voice. He'd shake his head and say "I know I'm no singer"- right after moving everyone in a little club in Murfreesboro Tn to tears. He helped the singer songwriters at MTSU, after finally giving up on Vanderbilt ever starting a music industry degree. He introduced me to every living songwriter and performer who I dreamt of learning from, and I performed with most of them.
"Abe Lincoln with a guitar, ya kno!" Merle Haggard nailed it. Shame they didn't mention how Johnny's brother died when they were both young. He was nearly cut in two in a chainsaw accident. For me that answers alot of the deep melancholy in Johnny.
johney was the american dream , and the nightmare. .........but he was honest ....always honest even with his demons. .........his 40 days in the desert came and went.....and came again, then it left. honesty can not take too many lies. johney transcends any kind of style music music. cash is the american dream....in every song. you can not lie to truth. he believed in possibilities.......and thank GOD for it.
I agree. JC does not just easily fit into any one music genre. He created his own genre, a genre of complete brilliance and originality, to which only JC could ever, or will ever, belong. Love you so much June & Johnny!
Every documentary of Johnny cash I cry at the end because he was just a troubled yet soulful, humble human and he’s my favorite and only favorite musician out of everyone. It’s just amazing and sad to hear him and just listen to what he has to say.
A Wonderful documentary of one of the greatest in depth and soul we ever had the privledge of being fully entertained by. I'm not quite sure how a young kid growing up in our small beach town had a collection of 45 records of the one and only Johnny Cash I only know I listened to those records over and over again at such a young age in a New York City beach town that was the furthest road possible from this great mans roots. I guess it must have been the good Lord himself that saw to it those records made it to me. RIP♡ Mr. Cash truly you were one of the great ones!

I played this video so my late mom & dad could see it. My dad showed me Johnny and my mom showed me Waylon Jennings. I'm 70 now in Canada. My son when he was 20 played I heart myself today. It blow me a way.
This is a fantastic documentary of Johnny Cash's life as a great American artist and it was quite special to have his friends and families share their heartfelt thoughts about who he was and what he meant to people around the world .

I saw the movie about him with , well you know who I am referring to. The man was a legend in his own time, not many other people can make that claim. 9:33 Merle Haggard got it wrong. Johnny wasn't "chewing gum". He was mocking the guard up top who was chewing gum & seemed to act like JC wasn't a big deal. The prisoners totally picked up on it & instantly fell in-love with Cash.
I firmly believe that there are only two groups of people: those who are Johnny Cash fans and those who have not yet heard one of his songs. At the risk of sounding all Annie Wilkes, I must say that I have been a fan since his very first release, Cry, Cry, Cry, which came out in 1955. While I love his songs, it is not primarily his singing that makes me such a huge fan. I am a fan because of Johnny Cash, the man. He was that rare breed known as a "good man" and that goodness came through even in his wild days when he was popping pills and getting arrested. Every time I watch "Hurt" I cry because it's like I am hearing him saying goodbye all over again. He did not write it, but it's HIS song.

Saw Him at Seland Arena, Fresno, 1974. He and June blew the roof off. One of the first times he performed Ragged Old Flag. At that, the crying and screaming was one of the greatest reactions I ever saw.
I remember at the age of 13 watching his show on tv. It was on in the afternoon when I came home from school. First time it was on he sang about the man in black, unforgettable. PS This is a great story, loved it, thank your for this.

He didn’t write Hurt. It actually belongs to a modern group. I think it was by Trent Reznor of nine inch nails. I do love Johnny’s version though.

John Cash and my Father share the same birthday - February 26th. John was four years older than my Dad. Dad loved Johnny Cash. One of the first songs I remember listening to on my Dad's car radio was Jackson. :) This is excellent documentary. Thank you for sharing.

I worked nightshift as an RN in prison. The day he died, when I got off at 5;30 am, the radio was playing a tribute to him. I drove out inthe Country and kept going3, unable to go home. I cried so hard I had to pull over twice. I'll never forget how3 EVERYTHING was so Acute and life felt different after the awakening I felt. He's still one-of- my favorites. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel also and followed Johnny from the beginning in the 50's and still to this day and this Documentary was a fitting History of this great American and his music will live on forever.

I grew up with Country and Rock & Roll, Cash and Orbison were campions of music. Cash only had to walk on stage or in a room and he owned it. Orbison could write songs that were super hits but no one could sing them because they didn't have the range of Orbison, he didn't think he could sing but he was forced to start and showcase his songs.
I met John once in the airport in Nashville BNA. I always got in early to get a good seat before they were assigned ahead. John walked in and saw this quite guy sitting by himself at the gate and he came over and said, "Hello I'm ... and I said, "Johnny Cash". He just smiled and said that's funny it's my name too. I must have turned 20 shades of RED, trying to explain he was my favorite singer. Ever! He was as humble as if he was just regular people which I guess he was.

You're right about Roy. He took me under his wing as a performer and he ( the early 80's) was still in denial about his incredible voice. He'd shake his head and say "I know I'm no singer"- right after moving everyone in a little club in Murfreesboro Tn to tears.
He helped the singer songwriters at MTSU, after finally giving up on Vanderbilt ever starting a music industry degree.
He introduced me to every living songwriter and performer who I dreamt of learning from, and I performed with most of them.

Shame they didn't mention how Johnny's brother died when they were both young. He was nearly cut in two in a chainsaw accident. For me that answers alot of the deep melancholy in Johnny.
johney was the american dream , and the nightmare. .........but he was honest ....always honest even with his demons. .........his 40 days in the desert came and went.....and came again, then it left. honesty can not take too many lies. johney transcends any kind of style music music. cash is the american dream....in every song. you can not lie to truth. he believed in possibilities.......and thank GOD for it.
I agree. JC does not just easily fit into any one music genre. He created his own genre, a genre of complete brilliance and originality, to which only JC could ever, or will ever, belong. Love you so much June & Johnny!
Every documentary of Johnny cash I cry at the end because he was just a troubled yet soulful, humble human and he’s my favorite and only favorite musician out of everyone. It’s just amazing and sad to hear him and just listen to what he has to say.

A Wonderful documentary of one of the greatest in depth and soul we ever had the privledge of being fully entertained by.
I'm not quite sure how a young kid growing up in our small beach town had a collection of 45 records of the one and only Johnny Cash I only know I listened to those records over and over again at such a young age in a New York City beach town that was the furthest road possible from this great mans roots.
I guess it must have been the good Lord himself that saw to it those records made it to me.

I grew up listing to this great man my father was one of give brothers grew up in south Arkansas each one of them had numerous albums plaques and memoribilla of johnny cash throughout his career my dad and all his brothers are gone now but if I want to remember and cherish my father's life along with his brothers jack ray monroe bill anfy dad Richard I listen to this man

9:33 Merle Haggard got it wrong. Johnny wasn't "chewing gum". He was mocking the guard up top who was chewing gum & seemed to act like JC wasn't a big deal. The prisoners totally picked up on it & instantly fell in-love with Cash.
I firmly believe that there are only two groups of people: those who are Johnny Cash fans and those who have not yet heard one of his songs. At the risk of sounding all Annie Wilkes, I must say that I have been a fan since his very first release, Cry, Cry, Cry, which came out in 1955. While I love his songs, it is not primarily his singing that makes me such a huge fan. I am a fan because of Johnny Cash, the man. He was that rare breed known as a "good man" and that goodness came through even in his wild days when he was popping pills and getting arrested. Every time I watch "Hurt" I cry because it's like I am hearing him saying goodbye all over again. He did not write it, but it's HIS song.

I love Tammy and George ,In my book they were the best , I saw their kind of pain, when my son's wife took his dog the good stuff and left him , he called and ask if he could come home for a few days , he came he cried ,and cried ,he howled at the moon ,he was heartbroken , oh she wanted to come back ,but he was to hurt.
I hope she at least gave him his dog back. Hope he is doing well now.

Saw Him at Seland Arena, Fresno, 1974. He and June blew the roof off. One of the first times he performed Ragged Old Flag. At that, the crying and screaming was one of the greatest reactions I ever saw.
