I have FINALLY gotten my husband on board with a permanent move to Portugal!!! I remembered some service I saw in a video you had about a service that provided housing for the D7 Visa process. Seemed to me that they gave you the 1 year lease but you had the option to bail out without penalties when you found more long term housing. Seems rather dumb to require housing for a year (which tells me you need to be in PT) and then return to apply for your visa back at the consulate in the USA. That's a lot of flying around! Any ideas on this dilemma?

You don't mention the student visa. It's not recommended? I liked the sound of it better bc it only requires proof of means (bank account statement) & not a monthly income. I have a good level of savings, but no current job. I'm an entrepreneur, but would rather avoid being labeled as that in Portugal. @@ExpatsEverywhere if you really want to give all the information to your clients, ler them know that in many historical sites they will not see locals anymore, just "expats"; foreign retirees and digital nomads (most of them just here because tax benefits), as well imigrants from Índia and Pakistan being exploited in tourism. Because of this trendyness, locals and imigrants cannot rent or buy a house. The emigration among portuguese youngsters is all time high because them just cant afford a house. This process that started in Lisbon and Porto, is expanding to the countryside also. Please read some local media!

Hi, not really. It's a weird one for us too. We're not sure if it was intentional or an oversight within the ever changing permitting process but yes, that's the way the law reads. No more than 6 months consecutive during a calendar year and up to 8 months total (cumulative) during the validity of the permit. There was a change to the wording when they went from the 1 year validity to the 2 year validity and the wording didn't change when they started giving 3 years. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhereHi, come to think about it, the wording for spouses of EU citizens who all get a five-year provisional residency permit from the get go, have the 6-8 month wording for each year consistent with the former one-year wording for D Visa holders. Also, for Portuguese Citizenship the requirement is 30 months of residency which is basically 6 months per year during 5 years. Basically upon renewal of the residency permit we all fall into the 5 year category.

There's no hype with the banking system or norms. Most but not all banks have some maintenance fees. It's annoying and we completely understand your frustration. ActivoBank with is related to Millennium bank still has a fee free account but it's not considered one of the best banks. Best cell service might depend on where you are. Vodafone tends to be stronger in the north so if you're up here then you should go with it. MEO and NOS is better further south from what we know. - Josh & Kalie

@@MrTdacosta Hi, it's really hard to tell to be honest. On all accounts. Spain is always a place that's held interest from people (at least Americans) when looking at Portugal. The Simplified Tax Regime is also something people might be able to benefit from as opposed to the NHR and there would be changes in March with the new government when it comes to interest in immigration. Will the processing time be quicker? In theory it should be, but who knows about in practice. We've actually not heard 30 months for citizenship. We've heard people getting int completed in around a year but that was several years ago. It's not something we've kept our finger on the pulse of. Sorry. - Josh
So as a disabled vet with 65k passive income, I would need a D7, but what about my wife? Does she ride on my D7? Or would she require a different one so she could work in Portugal? Im currently going through the D8 with a lawyer BUT I think we are about to stop and stay in Saudi. Why ? Basically on the D8 you need to make 4x the Portuguese average which is soooo morally wrong. Why …because then the government will tax you on that earning. For example we have to declare over 108,000 euros per year to live in Portugal even though our cost of living is less than that. So I now have to pay between 32% (with the NHR) or 38% without. So a good 30k euro to their government even though my business is outside of Portugal but because I breath in Portugal they say it’s their tax. It’s a joke. To make it worse while you go through the D8 visa you anther scam where they make you fake rent a property even though you don’t live there and also you have put 30k in a Portugal bank. They still punish you. Honesty to move to Portugal go in on a D7 passive income retirement visa. Don’t go in on the D8. The NHR is crap so don’t chase that. And remember Portugal is not a first world country when it comes to government so be prepared for long waits and incompetence. Sorry guys but these channels never really tell you how expensive it is to move.
Hey Jon, you've said a lot here and it's a lot to unpack but your situation is rather nuanced. A couple points of clarification for people reading this comment. 4x the Portuguese minimum wage is €3,280 and if you have any dependents for example a spouse and 1 kid. They would be €410, and €246 added to the €3,280 for a total of €3,936 (2024). On a yearly basis, that means €47,232 not €108,000. If you're making €108,000, awesome for you. Saudi or Dubai is certainly better due to its no tax/low tax environment. Regarding the D8 and owning a business and having to pay taxes on that, I hope you've spoken to an accountant and not solely relied on a lawyer for advice when it comes to structuring that because there are likely ways to drastically reduce your tax burden. The government asks for proof of accommodation and some people have decided to fake their rent, while others rented on a year contract sight unseen or rented a month or two early and basically lost those months of rent because they weren't in the country yet. It's an unfortunate situation that this immigration policy puts people in. Putting €30k into the bank isn't obligatory but remember, it's your money and when you're here, it's yours to use to pay for living expenses. It's just just sitting there, parked for the duration of your stay in Portugal. NHR works for some people while the simplified tax regime works for others. A good accountant can advise on which is better for the individual. The cost of the move is very different depending on the situation. We moved on less than €5,000 (flights, services, prepayment for rental). We've know others to do the same. We've also know others to spend over €10,000 on their move. They got lawyers, they hired moving companies, shipped container across the ocean, rented far in advance, paid services to find their rental...just a few videos back, we described situations and scenarios for people and of people that probably shouldn't move to Portugal so at least 1 channel tells you. Thank you. We didn't know you were based in the Netherlands. I see you posting a lot on the channel but it's interesting to know that you're Portuguese living abroad and still watching this content. Our guess our answer is layered. We first visited Porto in 2010 and fell in love. So it was first about Porto for why we wanted to move to Portugal. Then things like ease of getting a visa and cost of living entered the equation. As far as language goes, we've not really been intimated by foreign languages and have lived in enough places with worse language barriers that it didn't enter the equation. Ireland has always been a place that we've loved to visit. Cost of living and weather are probably two things that would put us off the most but never say never. It's a nice place. I hope that answers your question. #1 reason we love Portugal so much at this point is the people. We find people in Portugal to be awesome and it permeates a bunch of other facets of our life. - Josh & Kalie
Thanks! Yes, I have dual citizenship, born and lived most of my life in Brazil. Only visited Portugal quickly but I admit your taxes for the self employed scare me as they're calculated on the turnover, not the profit, so you can't deduct business expenses (and they're much higher for lower income earners than the ones in richer countries like NL). I feel the weather can be quite too hot there for me, to be honest. The Netherlands is perfect, we get a week of winter here, another there, but light winter rarely below -8 and only one week of hellish summer above 27 C. Driving in Portugal is much better without all those bicycles around LOL. It's nice you do well around language issues. I am happy in NL because they gladly do everything I need in English as I didn't learn the language yet. I really like your content and I am questioning my location choice as it might be appealing to move somewhere else. I hear about some Asian countries that might have better medical services (like the ones found in the private sector in Brazil and USA) but as you mention, they might present higher language barriers. @@grizfan93 I can be wrong but it seems that if you work with service you apply a fixed factor of 70% as your presumed profit. Need to double check it, of course. Tax brackets are much lower because of the reduced minimum wage, therefore someone making Dutch level minimum wage is considered Middle Class by Portuguese taxes, or so it seems, even though you can't rent a 2 bedroom apartment for 300 euros anymore. Please correct me if I am wrong, but high cost is what deterred me from moving. Here in The Netherlands I get half of my rent back from the government because I am poor by their standards and I pay almost no income taxes for the same reason. I don't eat out here because I can't afford €30 meals and even McDonald's is like 12 or 15, but groceries are affordable, specially if you know how to shop for deals. The Dutch seem much happier in general than the Portuguese but I feel Portugal has more affordable fun and perhaps better health care if you watch the advice from @ExpatsEverywhere video in the topic, super informative. Forget mortgages or credit here in The Netherlands if you don't have a permanent job contact and Dutch taxes are lower but you have to write down every km you drive with your car, when and where you go. And you can't declare your car as personal if you drive less than 500 Km personally per year. This is just an example to let you know how annoying they can be micromanaging you here. It's fine otherwise ☺
@@TheSimArchitect Yeah, I think you are not correct about how taxes are handled for self-employed, or at best only partially correct, and you are missing a lot of important information the various options available. Portugal will never be seen as a tax haven, but the reality is no where near as grim as you implied in your earlier post. You are less wrong when it comes to affordability of housing in Portugal, which is a significant problem in Portugal, and also many other countries at the moment. The Netherlands may be doing a better job helping their citizens with affordable housing. But in an earlier comment, you mentioned Ireland, where the housing affordability problem is significantly worse. Sure, probably better job opportunities there than in Portugal for younger people, but Ireland is not a good place to be with a low-paying job.

hi. just to remind that beginning from Jan. 2024 minimum wage is 1060 euros in Portugual now! so, for D7 visa, you have to consider that information.

Im currently going through the D8 with a lawyer BUT I think we are about to stop and stay in Saudi. Why ? Basically on the D8 you need to make 4x the Portuguese average which is soooo morally wrong. Why …because then the government will tax you on that earning. For example we have to declare over 108,000 euros per year to live in Portugal even though our cost of living is less than that. So I now have to pay between 32% (with the NHR) or 38% without. So a good 30k euro to their government even though my business is outside of Portugal but because I breath in Portugal they say it’s their tax. It’s a joke. To make it worse while you go through the D8 visa you anther scam where they make you fake rent a property even though you don’t live there and also you have put 30k in a Portugal bank. They still punish you. Honesty to move to Portugal go in on a D7 passive income retirement visa. Don’t go in on the D8. The NHR is crap so don’t chase that. And remember Portugal is not a first world country when it comes to government so be prepared for long waits and incompetence. Sorry guys but these channels never really tell you how expensive it is to move.
Hey Jon, you've said a lot here and it's a lot to unpack but your situation is rather nuanced. A couple points of clarification for people reading this comment. 4x the Portuguese minimum wage is €3,280 and if you have any dependents for example a spouse and 1 kid. They would be €410, and €246 added to the €3,280 for a total of €3,936 (2024). On a yearly basis, that means €47,232 not €108,000. If you're making €108,000, awesome for you. Saudi or Dubai is certainly better due to its no tax/low tax environment. Regarding the D8 and owning a business and having to pay taxes on that, I hope you've spoken to an accountant and not solely relied on a lawyer for advice when it comes to structuring that because there are likely ways to drastically reduce your tax burden. The government asks for proof of accommodation and some people have decided to fake their rent, while others rented on a year contract sight unseen or rented a month or two early and basically lost those months of rent because they weren't in the country yet. It's an unfortunate situation that this immigration policy puts people in. Putting €30k into the bank isn't obligatory but remember, it's your money and when you're here, it's yours to use to pay for living expenses. It's just just sitting there, parked for the duration of your stay in Portugal. NHR works for some people while the simplified tax regime works for others. A good accountant can advise on which is better for the individual.
The cost of the move is very different depending on the situation. We moved on less than €5,000 (flights, services, prepayment for rental). We've know others to do the same. We've also know others to spend over €10,000 on their move. They got lawyers, they hired moving companies, shipped container across the ocean, rented far in advance, paid services to find their rental...just a few videos back, we described situations and scenarios for people and of people that probably shouldn't move to Portugal so at least 1 channel tells you.

If you want to benefit from the society, culture and infrastructure of Portugal, guess what? You gotta pay for it 😂. Portugal is a poor country, small population, older population, no oil etc, how do you expect them to pay for societies needs? Taxing people that earn outside of Portugal but want to benefit from living in Portugal sounds reasonable to me. You seem angry but no one asked you move to Portugal.

Nice video as usual! If you don't mind me asking, why did you choose Portugal and not Ireland, as the latter is an English speaking country with lower taxes. Was it because of the weather, maybe the medical care, something else? I am in The Netherlands for 6+ years but considering moving (I am a Portuguese citizen but never lived there, only visited). Thank you. We didn't know you were based in the Netherlands. I see you posting a lot on the channel but it's interesting to know that you're Portuguese living abroad and still watching this content. Our guess our answer is layered. We first visited Porto in 2010 and fell in love. So it was first about Porto for why we wanted to move to Portugal. Then things like ease of getting a visa and cost of living entered the equation. As far as language goes, we've not really been intimated by foreign languages and have lived in enough places with worse language barriers that it didn't enter the equation. Ireland has always been a place that we've loved to visit. Cost of living and weather are probably two things that would put us off the most but never say never. It's a nice place. I hope that answers your question. #1 reason we love Portugal so much at this point is the people. We find people in Portugal to be awesome and it permeates a bunch of other facets of our life. - Josh & Kalie
Thanks! Yes, I have dual citizenship, born and lived most of my life in Brazil. Only visited Portugal quickly but I admit your taxes for the self employed scare me as they're calculated on the turnover, not the profit, so you can't deduct business expenses (and they're much higher for lower income earners than the ones in richer countries like NL). I feel the weather can be quite too hot there for me, to be honest. The Netherlands is perfect, we get a week of winter here, another there, but light winter rarely below -8 and only one week of hellish summer above 27 C. Driving in Portugal is much better without all those bicycles around LOL. It's nice you do well around language issues. I am happy in NL because they gladly do everything I need in English as I didn't learn the language yet. I really like your content and I am questioning my location choice as it might be appealing to move somewhere else. I hear about some Asian countries that might have better medical services (like the ones found in the private sector in Brazil and USA) but as you mention, they might present higher language barriers. At least here we use the same alphabet and it's a bit easier to guess what's written after you're around long enough. 😁

@@grizfan93 I can be wrong but it seems that if you work with service you apply a fixed factor of 70% as your presumed profit. Need to double check it, of course. Tax brackets are much lower because of the reduced minimum wage, therefore someone making Dutch level minimum wage is considered Middle Class by Portuguese taxes, or so it seems, even though you can't rent a 2 bedroom apartment for 300 euros anymore. Please correct me if I am wrong, but high cost is what deterred me from moving. Here in The Netherlands I get half of my rent back from the government because I am poor by their standards and I pay almost no income taxes for the same reason. I don't eat out here because I can't afford €30 meals and even McDonald's is like 12 or 15, but groceries are affordable, specially if you know how to shop for deals. The Dutch seem much happier in general than the Portuguese but I feel Portugal has more affordable fun and perhaps better health care if you watch the advice from @ExpatsEverywhere video in the topic, super informative. Forget mortgages or credit here in The Netherlands if you don't have a permanent job contact and Dutch taxes are lower but you have to write down every km you drive with your car, when and where you go. And you can't declare your car as personal if you drive less than 500 Km personally per year. This is just an example to let you know how annoying they can be micromanaging you here. It's fine otherwise ☺
@@TheSimArchitect Yeah, I think you are not correct about how taxes are handled for self-employed, or at best only partially correct, and you are missing a lot of important information the various options available. Portugal will never be seen as a tax haven, but the reality is no where near as grim as you implied in your earlier post.
You are less wrong when it comes to affordability of housing in Portugal, which is a significant problem in Portugal, and also many other countries at the moment. The Netherlands may be doing a better job helping their citizens with affordable housing. But in an earlier comment, you mentioned Ireland, where the housing affordability problem is significantly worse. Sure, probably better job opportunities there than in Portugal for younger people, but Ireland is not a good place to be with a low-paying job.
