I understand that your target audience is foreigners who would prefer to be in the heart of a city for multiple reasons. But i was born in Portugal, raised in the US for almost 60 years, and go back there on a regular basis, sometimes 2 to 3 times a year. The issue i have is the same as most guidebooks, certain areas are overhyped and others are completely ignored or mentioned only as a footnote. Portugal has something for everyone regardless of tastes! One big issue i see often is high cost of living, comparatively, of living in the city center. Nobody seems to mention that just by living in the outskirts, and driving 20 minutes, you can buy a home with land instead of an apartment for substantially less! Slower lifestyle, less convenient, but much cheaper. Smaller communities are a great way to go as far as cost while the amenities are still available with a short commute! Where i live, i can be in Porto in 45 minutes, and Aveiro in 15. I know its not feasible to cover everything, but putting it out there for anyone interested!

@belle42 I have property in a small town most people haven't heard of. Unless you're from the area, it's unknown. That being said, I have access to everything, as I can be in multiple urban areas within a reasonable time frame of so required. But living outside the urban framework allows me to have a more relaxed lifestyle while still being able to access anything I need. TH-cam videos and travel guides always accentuate the larger cities, understandably so for people on the move, but doesn't account for those of us sick of the rat race looking for a more quiet lifestyle amongst life's headaches. Not everyone has the choices I've been granted through a lifetime of hard work and cautious investments, but you still have options! You can have a multimillion apartment in the center or a $200,000 sprawling property just outside of city limits, it depends on your needs and wish lists!

We've been looking at Tavira. Mediterranean climate, close to Spain, close to the rest of the Algarve, a bit less expensive... However, housing seems very limited in Tavira and not as inexpensive as you might think as well. Porto looks attractive, but perhaps overcast and/or rainy too much? I understand Coimbra is pricey (?), and Setubal may not be next to our metropolitan area of choice (Lisbon)?
I want to express my appreciation for your exceptional content about Portugal. Your work is commendable, and I wish you continued success. The was the best video I’ve seen about the different cities in Portugal. Hi... Maybe yourself are not familiar that it also snows in Portugal, and a lot of people likes it a lot. So i dare you to go to "Serra da Estrela" this winter (if you are allowed to get to the top because of the snow). There are gorgeous places nearby with different cultures and foods on the surrounds of the mountain. The most popular city nearby is Covilhã, but you can also explore Guarda, Fundão (visit in spring to see the flourish of cherry trees) or Castelo Branco. People that prefers the country-side will also find these places a good place to live or visit. Enjoy this trip :)

@@ExpatsEverywhere Since the 1970's there was a colony of artists in Lagos. The artists have spread out to less expensive pockets. Today Lagos is a large city but the coast has not lost its beauty. Restaurants are excellent, where to enjoy the best seafood with the best ocean view. Housing is more expensive than smaller towns to the interior... Along route 125 you'll find the artists studios, ceramists, etc...
I second that sentiment. I think the Algarve is underrated. There's isn't another part of Portugal with so many historic, picturesque, and vibrant towns all within 1 1/2hr drive. That's why I chose Portimao. If you combine Alvor and Ferragudo across the bridge where else can you have great beaches, restaurants, coastline hiking trails, good weather year round, lovely countryside to go motorcycling. If love an active lifestyle and the outdoors, it's hard to beat the Algarves.
This is a helpful video! Thanks! Seixal is on my list to visit, as well as a longer stay in Faro (I only spent 1 day there, last June), which Loulé is very close. I was going to visit in February, and my friends in Portugal told me the carnival in Loulé was a good idea. But, Nick commented on one of his videos, he wasn’t such a fan of that carnival. He said something about cold, 1/2 dressed girls. Anyway, I’ve decided to wait, and have a longer trip in May-June.
Geez, that's really nice! Thank you very much. I do wish I could speak the language better. I'm also really trying to improve the "lh" sound, which I didn't have to worry about in this video. HAHA - Josh & Kalie
Agreed that almost all of your city names have become quite good. Just two very minor adjustments: open, short e in Beja (not Beija) and separate syllables in Ra-inha. Otherwise, perfect!
Great video Josh. I’m between Ericeira and Caldas… I love the West Coast. Coming from a land-locked (with rivers of course)l place 8-9 hours drive to the ocean… I’m planning to spend the rest of my life, with8n walking distance of the coast! Cheers ~

Great video, very well put together and very comprehensive. Really liked the details about what the city is known for and what activities one can do in their free time.
Thank you very much! We've got individual videos that are more comprehensive for these cities and towns. The ones we don't have we're making in the next few months. - Josh & Kalie
I really appreciate this video. Great job! We are always scouting for a new location in Portugal for when our lifestyle changes and Lisbon no longer works for us. Including Serenity's ratings was very beneficial since we have been customers for over a year now and couldn't imagine not having their services. We have crossed many of these locations off, but you reminded me that we have not visited Ericeira. Ericeira might remind of us our old home in Huntington Beach which is Surf City USA. Time for a road trip up there. Thanks!
Good video, nice summaries of the various towns. My one recommendation - show the location for at least a few seconds. We don’t know the areas that well yet, it would be nice to have a bit to really see where these places are located. Otherwise, good info, thanks!
Thank you very much. It's probably best to jump on Google map or Google Earth and start to plot the locations of the cities and towns that you liked, that way you can take your time to familiarize yourself with the geography. I'm not saying this to be snarky, it just makes more sense to take as much time as you need to really see where these places are and judge the distance from one another after the video wraps. Thanks for the compliments! - Josh
Metro only around Lisbon and Porto. However, cities in Portugal are not so big. You can use public transportation in Braga, Coimbra ou Aveiro (medium sized cities). I love Braga...
Thanks, Tom. I really just depends on how walking oriented you want to be and how much freedom to get from city to city that you want. Does that make sense? Most if not all of these cities/towns have walkabout amenities for daily living and uber/bolt/taxi can fill in the gap. - Josh & Kalie
Josh - Excellent work as usual. I think we should exclude Ericeira and include other lesser known town😉. However, if you’re back in Ericeira, we would love to host you and family☺️. Kim &Gregg. We met in Malta:).
Nice vid, would have like to see you mention what you think of each city as far as car dependency, walkability, and public transportation as well as medium rant prices. A bit of background or better explanation on how and why you ranked the cities the way you did
How are you pronouncing the names of our cities so perfectly? 😂 it’s so gratifying hearing a foreigner say it exactly like us. Congratulations man , you nailed every name of every city
Not mentioned in this video? For a comprehensive list, contact Serenity. We honestly reached out to them with our list of 12 and asked them to help rate them using our system (green, yellow and red). We didn't ask them about any places outside of the 12 and we were surprised by some of the colors assigned. They're the pros though. - Josh & Kalie
Correction: the island of Madeira IS NOT named after fennel, contrary to the capital Funchal. Fennel is "funcho" or "erva doce" (sweet herb). Madeira means wood, the island of wood, due to the thick forest found by Portuguese navigators when they discovered the island.
I Would definitely live in figueira da foz... but it has no private hospitals and only public one hospital across the bridge. Its not even city center. But its an amazing place...
Great video, I was so happy to see you mentioned 'Ericeira', I will be there my last 4 days and in Lagos my first 3 days this Nov! Will you be doing a video of the interior/central part of the country?
Thank you! We have a city guide of Ericeira that we're editing right now. It should be out soon. We don't have any plans to release videos of the interior or central part of the country any time soon. We've recently done a video on Chaves if you haven't seen that. - Josh & Kalie
Great video , may I ask you to have a look on the city of Tomar , knights of Templares and the oldest synagogue in iberic peninsula as one of many interesting points .
Congratulations for the video. Very well done. Just one observation, though: there is no "capital" in Madeira, or, better saying, the capital of Madeira is not Funchal; it's Lisbon. The capital of any point, place, town, city, region of Portugal is Lisbon. And, if you're wondering: that's right, Lisbon is also the capital of the Azores Islands, which sadly weren't mentioned in the video...
I watched this and enjoyed the visuals ,but it doesn't talk much about how Ex-Pats are really liking living in these places. I would really like to know about the banking system as I have watched other videos that say it's not great. I know I know only 20 minutes you can not do it all. But what makes this so attractive is the availability of VISAs to live there without insanely difficult requirements. But... so many videos reference bureaucracy problems. Thank you for making an excellent really enjoyable video.
Thank you for watching. We're not sure what aspect of the banking system people are saying "it's not great" but we don't have any major issues. There hasn't been a formal poll on these places among foreigners that live there and since people are different, we've tried to outline what's great about each place for individuals can make a decision if they might like it. - Josh & Kalie
I don't know about Portugal's health system but I haven't come across a good doctor. I fell, I couldn't stand the pain in my hand and went to the doctor. An X-ray was taken. They said there was nothing crushed. You returned to your country and it was broken in 2 places. 1 year later, a pain I've never seen in my life. 2 days later I went to the doctor and they asked for an X-ray. I asked for an ultrasound and an MRI, they said no, the result could be gas, kidney stones. 🤔I returned to my country urgently. Both of my kidneys were blocked by stones and they had emergency surgery to remove them.
Visited portugal fall 2023, We found that we loved the smaller towns in the north. why? while so so touristy they werent overloaded or well known to tourists or the typical seaside resort towns. as such accomodations were less expensive. Tomar ,Coimbra, Guimaraes were real gems. Porto was too busy, its bridges and downtown river area was nice but , very very touristy. It reflected in prices. Aviero , i felt a bit sorry for, while trying hard to give itself some pizzaz it just lacked any real draw at all. The beach was too far away for east access. If i had wheel to get the ocean nearby that
Hi Josh I enjoyed your new video with the healthcare component added. As you know, many expats are relocating to Pt for retirement. Healthcare is a huge priority in searching for the best new home. Do you know of a place where we can look for the best information for cities in Pt. I want more “green” dot places when selecting the best place for me. Thanks for sharing ❤😊

Just be aware that house prices and rental prices are ridiculously expensive and not at all realistic. Many Portuguese are having to leave because they can't afford to live here
I am informed by relative living in Portugal that despite public opinion Americans that chose to live in portugal were not that many to begin with. Now they tell me Americans are leaving portugal for many reasons. Please check them out yourself before you decide on Portugal
You didn't mention Coimbra and its should've been at the top of your list with the oldest university and enchanting villages nearby with top beaches nearby with a 20 mins drive.
The obvious answer to that question is; For personal tastes, other people's opinions are unnecessary, you have to go, see, know and choose for yourself.
Aww, thank you! Both places are nice but have their flaws. I'm leaning towards saying Portimão over Setúbal because outside of the city center, it's not particularly nice and the city center does shutdown kind of early, however, if that's your cup of tea, then it's better than Portimão in that regard. - Josh & Kalie
Coimbra was good to live in maybe ten years ago. Now, public transport is a joke, services are a joke, too crowded, unsafe, overwhelming traffic, dead fish floating in the stinky river...Nobody wants to live there.
having lived in Caldas da Rainha I can clearly say that this is what you find online - the reality is very different and I would not recommend anyone moving into this particular area of the country for many different reasons.

I lived in Ericeira for 6 months and definitely it is like you said. Very cool vibe and beautiful.
Thanks for sharing. - Josh & Kalie
Nice list. Here's mine, fwiw. :) 12. Guimaraes. 11. Loule. 10. Leiria. 9. Tavira. 8. Caldas da Rainha. 7. Porto. 6. Braga. 5. Cascais. 4. Lisbon. 3. Viana do Costelo. 2. Coimbra. 1. Setubal. Honorable mention: Viseu.
Nice list. Setubal district has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Thanks for sharing your list, Tom! - Josh & Kalie
You missed Sintra 😊
For the life of me, I don’t know why Viseu doesn’t make the cut in these ranking videos.
I am located in Setubal and would be delighted to extend my hospitality whenever you guys decide to visit, offering my assistance to explore the natural beauty of Setubal.
Thank you very much! We appreciate the generosity. - Josh & Kalie
The was the best video I’ve seen about the different cities in Portugal. I’m starting the process now to move to Portugal in October of next year and I’m officially moving to Vila De Gaia and really looking forward to relocating. My concern was finding healthcare and this video was definitely helpful! You all are really great! Thanks again!
With all of this natural beauty and cultural diversity, how can anyone not choose Portugal as their holiday destination or permanent home?? 😃
Well, there could be a few reasons like the totally dysfunctional bureaucratic system that you have to deal with.
@@pbohearn Well, the bureaucracy is surprisingly still less dysfunctional than some of the other places in the world I've lived including Italy, Spain and Canada...
Just like California. Unfortunately California got rekt after decades of incompetent politicians and policies

Such a great video. Useful, relevant and just what I was looking for. Also, loved the added medical services color coding. Thank you!
We enjoyed are visit to Portugal. Lisbon is beautiful & Porto, even in the rain, was quite lovely. We'd love to return to see more of the country. If we were to live there, I'd simply want access to a proper 25m lap pool......and maybe some sea views.
Thanks!
Thank you very much for the channel support! We appreciate it, Maria. - Josh & Kalie
You should cover cities in Beira Alta & Beira Baixa for those looking for a quieter & more rural lifestyle. Those areas are gorgeous!!
Very good video. If I was making plans to go back to Portugal I would consider many on your list, Thank you,
Thank you! Thanks for the feedback. - Josh & Kalie
Thank you for this video, very informative
Great video! In case anybody wants the list ordered by quality of healthcare, here it is:
Braga 1 -
Porto 1 -
Seixal 2 25Lisbon
Ericeira 2 45Lisbon
Caldas da Rainha 2 80Lisbon
Loulé 2 260Lisbon
Funchal 2 960Lisbon
Viana do Castelo 3 70Porto
Figueira Da Foz 3 140Porto
Beja 3 180Lisbon
Aveiro 3 250Lisbon
Vila Real De Santo Antonio 3 320Lisbon
The last column is the driving distance from the nearest big city, e.g., Ericeira is yellow but quit close to Lisbon, which may give it a handup. @izzytoons
You're a mensch, John! Thank you! 😃
Thanks! Is this information on a spreadsheet that can be shared? Even a screen shot would be helpful.
Looks like you are getting your tongue around Portuguese. Great info, thanks.
Thank you. We're going to keep practicing of course. It needs to get better. - Josh & Kalie
Very nice list! My family is from the Valpacos/Chaves area in the north. Definitely worth checking those cities out too! Very close to Spain
Thank you. We plan on filming in Chaves this year. - Josh & Kalie
I can't believe Lagos didn’t make it on your list. It's the best! 🙂
Is Lagos doable carless?
Lagos is excellent, I love Lagos, but it is more expensive than all other municipalities mentioned.
Cool. Tell us why you love it! - Josh & Kalie
This video was amazing. Thank you from USA. 🇺🇸 I want to retiree in Portugal in a small place Coimbra,Aveiro❤😊, and other ones.
Thanks for this video Josh. I will be in Porto in the next few weeks and I am excited.
You're welcome. Thanks for the comment. We hope you enjoy Porto! - Josh & Kalie
Josh your pronunciation is getting on-point!
@@luisgomes4929 Really good point. I can definitely hear my mistakes. Thanks! - Josh

Incredible accent with some of these city names, Josh. Awesome!
Great video, Josh and Kalie! I love that you threw in shots of your big trip the other year, so we got to see old faces. (Hi Carl!)
Thank you very much! :-) - Josh & Kalie
- Josh
Thank you for this video!
Putting the health comparison in was a genius move! How many of these cities can I live in without a car? Just asking for a friend 😁.
Tommy
Metro only around Lisbon and Porto. However, cities in Portugal are not so big. You can use public transportation in Braga, Coimbra ou Aveiro (medium sized cities). I love Braga...
Thanks, Tom. I really just depends on how walking oriented you want to be and how much freedom to get from city to city that you want. Does that make sense? Most if not all of these cities/towns have walkabout amenities for daily living and uber/bolt/taxi can fill in the gap. - Josh & Kalie
Public transport in Coimbra is very poor...and getting worse (3rd world level), managed very badly.
Thank you so much, a quick question, is Coimbra on the list at all in 2024?
Josh - Excellent work as usual. I think we should exclude Ericeira and include other lesser known town😉. However, if you’re back in Ericeira, we would love to host you and family☺️. Kim &Gregg. We met in Malta:).

Great information in this video. Thank you!
Thank you, Priyanka! - Josh & Kalie
Thank you very much! I make a ton of mistakes in Portuguese but I'm trying my best. - Josh
What are the “green” towns for the health care?
Not mentioned in this video? For a comprehensive list, contact Serenity. We honestly reached out to them with our list of 12 and asked them to help rate them using our system (green, yellow and red). We didn't ask them about any places outside of the 12 and we were surprised by some of the colors assigned. They're the pros though. - Josh & Kalie
You should check Montijo, its increasing a lot and very near to Lisbon, with great amenities.
You further confirm why I chose Gaia (thus greater Porto) as my "retirement" home. Muito obrigada. Go Dragoes!!!!
Wonderful! Glad to hear it! Força Porto.
We're talking about Funchal. It's named after the word "funcho" or fennel in English. - Josh
@@ExpatsEverywhere yes, absolutely. The banner indicated that the island Madeira was named after fennel, thus my comment.

I Would definitely live in figueira da foz... but it has no private hospitals and only public one hospital across the bridge. Its not even city center. But its an amazing place...
Even though English is spoken in Portugal, I understand you must pass a language test in order to get residency when purchasing a home or apartment?
A2 Portuguese fluency is needed for citizenship not for residency. Citizenship is available only after living 5 years in Portugal. - Josh & Kalie

Great video, I was so happy to see you mentioned 'Ericeira', I will be there my last 4 days and in Lagos my first 3 days this Nov! Will you be doing a video of the interior/central part of the country?

Great video , may I ask you to have a look on the city of Tomar , knights of Templares and the oldest synagogue in iberic peninsula as one of many interesting points .

Very good information. Ericeira is my favorite.
Thank you! #12 for the win for you! - Josh & Kalie
Congratulations for the video. Very well done. Just one observation, though: there is no "capital" in Madeira, or, better saying, the capital of Madeira is not Funchal; it's Lisbon. The capital of any point, place, town, city, region of Portugal is Lisbon. And, if you're wondering: that's right, Lisbon is also the capital of the Azores Islands, which sadly weren't mentioned in the video...
wooohooo Figueira da Foz made the list! my home sweet home :)

Porto and Gaia are the same city basically. Thats how we view ourselves. Also it was the same city 100 years ago
But... so many videos reference
bureaucracy problems.
Both of my kidneys were blocked by stones and they had emergency surgery to remove them.
how do i find the braga expat meetups?
Visited portugal fall 2023, We found that we loved the smaller towns in the north.
why? while so so touristy they werent overloaded or well known to tourists or the typical seaside resort towns.
as such accomodations were less expensive.
Tomar ,Coimbra, Guimaraes were real gems.
Porto was too busy, its bridges and downtown river area was nice but , very very touristy. It reflected in prices.
Aviero , i felt a bit sorry for, while trying hard to give itself some pizzaz it just lacked any real draw at all. The beach was too far away for east access.
If i had wheel to get the ocean nearby that
p.s. we did 7 cities/ towns in 15 days.
This video helped me… a lot

Hey Expats, love your channel and videos! What is the area/city with the weather closest to Southern California? Thank you in advance ❤️
It seems like Lisbon region and further south along the coast. This could be why many Californians tend to prefer moving there as opposed to the central, north and interior. Thanks for the love. - Josh & Kalie
Is there a green color health care??? I didn’t see one ☝️
Just be aware that house prices and rental prices are ridiculously expensive and not at all realistic. Many Portuguese are having to leave because they can't afford to live here

LOVED this video Josh and Kalie!!
In your opinion, for a US couple that is fluent in Portuguese, retired, mid 50s, empty nesters: PORTIMÃO or SETUBAL?
Alabama
The obvious answer to that question is; For personal tastes, other people's opinions are unnecessary, you have to go, see, know and choose for yourself.

@@antoniodejesusviveiros528 yeah I know but I value their opinion and would take it into account
Coimbra didn't make it!!!???
Not for us in 2024. It just missed out. - Josh & Kalie
Nobody wants to live in Coimbra.
Really? Because Caldas da Rainha has one of the most recognized foreign communities now and those that live there seem to love it, although, we personally wouldn't live there. It seems to work for a certain type of person. It sounds like that's not you. - Josh & Kalie
I was very disappointed to see that Figueira da Foz got a red for healthcare as that is one of the places I am considering. I do wish you'd gone into more detail about what went into marking a location as green yellow red.

@@ExpatsEverywhere For me its more of just a feeling.
