You know, through traumatic experiences words "get stolen". We lose words. As I healed my traumatic experiences, more and more words came back to me. I was able to describe things again, to have words again... just the way I could before. The same goes for "feeling". They numb or disappear as an effect of being overwhelmed (by scary stuff or by beauty)... and to be able to feel again we have to adjust the dosis. Just the way it is right for every individual. With scary stuff as much as with beauty. Because beauty and love - the way it exists out there - can be overwhelming. And in my experience most people will rather close off to it than look at it or feel it.
As much as we hate to think otherwise, some things truly cannot be put into words. It's an experiential existence. Here's a simple example for illustration: imagine somebody's never eaten an apple in their life. You can try all you like to 'describe' to them how the apple tastes (in your opinion!) but until they actually slip a slice of it into their mouth and wrap their tongue around it, they simply would not know. Don't get me wrong, I love poetry - it's just that there simply is no substitute for first hand experience.
Jason, I thoroughly enjoy the "Humankind" series; extremely informative. Please take this constructive criticism positively. You need to get control of your arms and hands during your on-screen presentation. I can appreciate your enthusiasm for your presentation content, however, I, for one, find your vigorous hand and body gestures to be somewhat distracting (well, actually, very distracting). It's fortuitous that I have a DVR set box as I find myself flying back to re-hear what has just been said because I was so overwhelmed with the aggressive hand flailing. The hand gesturing doesn't (for me) positively augment the program message. Well-placed and well-timed body language can make for a crisp and refined presentation. As they say, timing is everything...but not ALL THE TIME. If you have difficulties keeping your hand gestures to a professional minimum, tie some kitchen twine to your hands and fasten them to your belt loops. Otherwise, love the program. Don't fret, things will improve. Just focus and practice.
While I appreciate his need to question and wonder, I do find his appeal to "transcendence" and "beauty" awfully pretentious. Also, words do not and cannot describe things to their fullest, as human subjectivity is a lens we cannot "transcend".

Yeah also how he says he uses falling in love as a means to push away bad thoughts, like you can just decide to fall in love.
