As a Harley tech, I've had to replace a couple bottom ends due to stuff being left/dropped into crankcases. And whatever dealership this bike went to should fire their techs for incompetence.

you would have to fire them all. The best way to fix a Harley is to only use after market part and never let Harley mechanics touch it. Take it to a mom and pop place that cares about thier reputation.

The owner will walk away ahead of the game. Harley will add another blemish to their quality control tactics. Which looks to be missing in action.

As an owner of an M8 I was fascinated with the developing horror show. I don’t see how that much debris could have stayed behind after machining; it would have fallen out spontaneously during subsequent handling. I would really like to hear H-D’s response. If there was one employee who did that to one engine, he might have done it to more. A general recall of engines built around the same time might actually be in order and the owner should be given a brand new motor and vip tour of the factory (before lawyers get involved).

Has nothing to do with first year of manufacture this is pure negligence of the machinist, QC, every worker who put a piece inside that engine, and any dealership who he took his complaints to that ignored him. I used to be an automotive technician and I’ve never seen anything like this on a car. I’m currently a machinist. If they do anything like we do for quality control it’s actually rather simple. A part gets run through castings first. After the cases are milled and ready to be built they go to QC but not before they are washed off. Then they go to another plant to be assembled. Then they get put through another QC
I actually called this issue in the first part because the only time I’ve ever seen this problem before was within the plant I work at. If the other QC catches something that’s the fault of our plant they send it back as a unit so we can see exactly what we fucked up and how to fix it. I’ve seen this one time doing what I do and the whole machining plant got an ass chewing from hell over it

It's a (mostly) good design; but whoever decided on the right side spark plugs should be slapped. They're a real PITA to get in and out, especially the front cylinder, right side plug and wire. Nothing should be that g'damn difficult; and the amount of dirt and debris that collects around the plug is insane. You absolutely have to blow it out with air before you take that plug out or you're going to get all kinds of shit in your cylinder

Watched this go on forever with a great number of mass produced items throughout time. Many one time owners of the AMF V-Twins often complained of manufacturing defects and poor build quality or ill fitment issues. Surprisingly, if the mechanical are pulled apart, and the bike reassembled in proper order and fashion, even the bastard children of AMF were amazingly trouble-free afterwards. Many run even better than the newer models now produced, even if they haven't all the bells and buzzers. Betting the client will be thrilled with your unraveling of his woes, and really happy he bought that extended warranty on his bike. Great job diagnosing this 30K headache.

when you spend lots of money on a "premium" motorcycle and it has a faiure of this type starting at relatively low miles, would you really want to throw lots more money at the motor? The factory should replace the motor and the owner can decide if they want to modify a good low miles motor not a motor with higher, hard miles. With the debris and heat this motor has seen, what original parts would you reuse? Oil pump, every bearing and seal, valves, pistons and rods all have seen "out of tolerance" heat. Metal chips have been circulating thru the motor causing accelerated wear along with 30,000 miles of regular wear. I would add load to a used and abused motor without more replacement parts than an entire motor would cost. Just my opinion but higher loads on worn cases and abused parts does not sound like a good plan

But with that, since the problem has been noted to the dealership since time of purchase I don’t think that customer should have to pay for the fix if it was found beyond the warranty. I once bought a new 2007 ultra classic, when they rolled it off showroom floor they heard rattling from rear wheel. When they took tire off rim there was chips in the tires. Big chips. Left in from factory. Amazing

Great video series. Yes I agree, this is definitely a factory machining "Missed the clean up line" issue. Completely agree with your diagnosis and logical conclusion. You would 100% expect to get material filings though out the entire oil and lubrication system form the pump through every single gallery and through the filter as well as some component wear. With Aluminium, you would expect to see that where in only areas that have direct rotational or linear motion and in direct contact with a harder material. There are only a few locations this occurs. Oil Pump, Bearing to housings, liffters, rockers.
Also Great tip on the oiler screws as well. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the video, it invokes a lot questions when I talk to the dealer. I run an 05 Road King Classic and 2012 FLHTK. I have about 40 k miles on each. Never an issue. But I must say that little 88 cu/in is my favorite. No comparison, the TK is a lot smoother, but that 88 puts a big smile on my face, the way it pulls the hills on cool morning is just awesome. Again, thanks for the education.

I think this shows 3 things.
    1. the M8 is pretty durable(silver lining) and can operate fairly well under poor condtions.
    2. Quality control during the initial phase of the M8 was awful, and this is just more evidence of it.
    3. Dealerships need to stop being so jackassed about helping customers, and HD needs to put a rule in place or something to improve customer support.
Having this engine last this long with horrid metal waste in it, is impressive and also completely idiotic. This should have never happened. Impressive that it lasted 30K miles with little issue doing so but it should never have happened in the first place.

I have been saying since 2018 that the days of hot air cooled motors are gone, full liquid cooling is the only way to go if Harley Davidson is to move forward. HD has been holding on to 1950's/1960's technology for far too long such as the big primary chain soaking in oil, pushrods, rocker arms, pushrod lifters, and shaking. There is no reason why a Harley Davidson should not run like a car or a Goldwing, this is 2021 right?
Now the release of the new Revolution Max engine in the new Sportster & Pan America appears to has designed all the problematic issues out of the engine's design that they had in prior formats. Full counter balancing, full liquid cooling and not just the heads, no pushrods, no big primary chain soaking in oil, injection and cooling oil system, no shifter clunk, and a refined ride. Now with this tech and thought out revolution max format HD can not go back to or continue to build current engines in the future.

So in essence, no extended warrantee no coverage due to assembly shortcuts? Harley will fight to not pay re and re costs tooth and nail. Great American company at its best! Also now bike owners of the 8 motor will need to open and inspect there motors for piece of mind before there warrantees are up. Very comforting. Enjoyed the vids very open and informative, sadly a honesty that is not wide spread.

Yes, I also worked in the machine shop at the engine plant of a major automotive manufacturer - and by chance also machining cylinder blocks. Cleaning ALL swarf ("shavings") from all bolt holes, and especially the crankcase, was critical QC procedure. I can scarcely believe what we saw in this vid! 😳

Says a lot for the M8 design that it can run 30k miles with this problem. Doesn't say much for HD quality control or aftersales. I had a 2017 Ultra which had the same symptoms, clattering engine after 180 miles. Luckily the dealer replaced if for a 2018 that has run fine. Great video series, learned a lot.

When the M8 motors were just coming out I was sent to get a load in Pennsylvania. It was an off site warehouse in an industrial area. They had the shipping area cordoned off and signs saying no phones or cameras. They had a team of people removing new bikes from crates and wheeling them over to a curtained off area and another team on the other side recrating them. All the shipper would say is they stopped all shipping, had any returned to this warehouse and mechanics were inside the curtain area fixing them. I did see a large cart go across with what looked like a number of crankshafts on it and another with clutch baskets. What ever was going on, didnt look too good.

I have a 17 road king with he M8. I was warned the early M8s had problems. I had issues with the transmission dumping oil into the primary which was fixed. The primary oil looked like a glitter bomb when off inside the case. The shift linkage bushings went bad making all kinds of noises. That is when the transmission problem was discovered so the warranty on the shift linkage covered the labor to install the transmission vent. I was experiencing a lot of primary chain slap and what felt like the primary chain tensioner slipping a cog or two. Harley was recommending 20-50 oil in all 3 holes at the time. Now they recommend gear oil in the primary and transmission.
I have a problem with the engine when it is first started. When I accelerate from a dead stop within the first few minutes of cold starting the engine starting it seems to hesitate. I'm not sure if there is a delay in the rear cylinder shut down thing or if something else is going on. There is about a 1 second drop in power which is awkward when turning left out of my driveway every morning. It feels like a misfire but it has never thrown a code. It is fine when it has run ten minutes or more. The techs claim they can't duplicate the issue. If I sit and rev the engine like a mad man before I start to pull out it doesn't do it but at 5:30 in the morning my neighbors don't appreciate my doing that.

S&S has improved after market compensators with rubber dampeners to eliminate the metal to metal contact which makes a lot of noise. Also should get shorter piston oiler screws. Great video coverage.
