i LOVE that you used academic research to illustrate the usage frequency of the different words, and commented on whether or not they aligned with your own experiences. that's excellent, would love to see more examples like these as they're both interesting and informative!

Lia……we are so sorry you’re dealing with this. Watching this made me cry so hard, because I grew up with that kind of closeness with family, that kind of need for seeing each other with some regularity because hearing that they’re okay isn’t enough, and just telling them that you’re okay isn’t enough for you either. And there are so many people who will see this expression from you and genuinely feel just a little bit less alone, and hurt a little bit less, because now they know that if someone was brave enough to put this online, there are so so many people who are going through it and can derive just a little bit more strength from that.

English has many words meaning "but" which are all used in different situations and formalities, just like the list of words in this video, for example: however, whereas, while, even if, although, on the other hand. English students love using "but" because it's quick and simple, like 但是, and it's usually the first word we come across while studying. I think the trick would be to connect each Chinese word to an equivalent English word/phrase based on the context, keeping in mind that we can always use "but/但是" anyway. This would make learning these words easier. ☺️

At 6:41 we have "却一个朋友也没有" which seems perfectly natural to me.
But it doesn't follow the rule that 却 should appear before a verb (such as 没有 ) or adverb (such as 也), and not before a noun (such as 一个朋友).
However, 一个朋友也没有 ("doesn't have a single friend") seems like such a fixed construction to me, that there is nowhere to put the 却.
Perhaps using 甚至 would be more correct (but less natural):
他很好, 但甚至一个朋友却没有 ("He's very nice, yet doesn't even have one friend")

Ran'er seems to be more logical as the intended interpretation of "but" is to link similar, but opposite components of the same subject.
The good and bad movies someone was in was an excellent example.
    Sometimes "but" may seem different.
When it is actually the same context.
"I like icecream, but I also like apple pie"
    Current subject = food
Though (food) is not directly mentioned.
    Previous subject = a movie star .
The "movie star" IS directly mentioned.
I need to study the contexts a bit more.
It seems a lot like there, their, and they're in English.
Exact same sound. Different meaning when written, though.
Learning to speak is easier than learning to read......😭
    Thank you for the video
    You are an excellent teacher.

To be absolutely accurate, only dan(shi) can link two noun or adjective phrases, while the other two ones can only link two "verbal phrases" or "clauses" (Chinese is more vague or, say, different, in syntaxic terminology, but still it's not perfect to say that only sentences can be linked using keshi or buguo, although it's a practical and understandable way to express the idea).

Not only you're right to disagree about the fact that 但是 is used less frequently than 不过 in daily conversation. I personally also find very hard to believe that 可是 is used more often than 但是. Scientific data sometimes are...well, not always to believed completely.
    在中国普通话与北方方言中,“但是”一词既可用于书面语,也可用于口语。根据我的个人经历,在口语中其词频应高于“可是”。不知视频中所显示的数据是否已过时,还是搜集者受其他地区方言的影响。反正,视频制作者根据自己的体验否定数据是非常正确的。

I feel like 却 translates well as yet for me. Using the examples of when the reality doesn't fit the expectations really points this out.
He's a great person, yet he doesn't have any friends. This sounds natural.
You are a nice person, yet I already have a boyfriend. Here, yet sounds awkward and though I would understand, but or however would definitely be more natural sounding.

@@ninoslanguagejourney6002 but, you included but. So that makes it sound more natural. Lol And I think this way makes it sound a bit different than just saying, but i have a boyfriend. Like the person may be being a bit rude, or may be may be disappointed by the fact they already have a boyfriend and this guy is so great. Like you're a nice person, but yet I have a boyfriend, dammit. Lol.

Just want to add, the phrase "然而/ran er “ might be similar in meaning to all the other phrases in this video, it sounds a bit formal for daily conversations, I'd say it's more appropriate in a written context/discourse.

Is the word "ran er" similar to the English word "despite"?
Despite the fact that learning vocabulary is important, it's also important to be able to to communicate.
I know you're busy at work, despite that you can't forget to spend time with your family.
It indicates the first clause is very true but additionally the second clause is also true. Not sure if that works for all cases of "ran er" but seems to fit the examples in the video.

So If I get this right: The dànshì group is more a "but", meanwhile "què" is used as "however"?

    • @tzatzikiv812
      @tzatzikiv812 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, basically ☺️ That's what I understood, anyway. I think nuance/context is important in languages so I really like how this video explains some of these subtle differences. I'd say the first group is more akin to "but" and the second group is more like "however, whereas, while, even though/even if" which deal with totally opposite situations.
I've also noticed something else while watching Chinese TV dramas; the use of "不过" tends to be softer. I checked this subtly with a couple of Chinese friends and they seem to agree. 🤔☺️

Accordingto Shu-Ching Liao Pan et al, in their book HSK1, page 11 and the following, there are sistematic changes of tone that comply with certain fixed rules. In the case of "bu" (Sorry I can't find the correct letter "u" in my laptop keyboard), it is normally pronounced with the fourth tone, but if the following syllable is also pronounced with that tone, then the "bu" changes to the second tone.
