    1:01. Slow down the video to .5x speed. Listen to how she says bu hao yi si. Practice this. This kind of 连读 (connected speech) is what helps people engage with you in Chinese much more naturally. One does have to be precise in their mimicry tho.
    Keep in mind this was the FORMAL answer and when spoken naturally there is still this much connecting/slurring going on. Very insightful.

      I guess one important distinction is that you should use more particles at the end of your sentences in casual sentences, like 啊 (a) 呀 (ya) 喔 (o) 嘛 (ma) 耶 (ye), 等等. These help to give a more intimate, informal feeling to them. Also, you can use more onomatopoeia, like 哈? (huh?) 哼!(hmm!) 欸?(eh?) 喔。(oh.) 嗯。(mm; a grunt of agreement, like Japanese うん), rather than full words. And instead of formal greetings, you can use informal ones like 嗨 (hi!) 嘿 (hey!) 拜拜 (bye-bye!), etc.

    Lol that part is so true. I always find it intrusive and uncomfortable when Chinese friends or even strangers try introducing me to their daughter or something. I met a client one time in NYC, I work with English and Chinese speakers, and after the first meeting she tries to hook me up with her daughter.

    And people try saying English is hard. In English, "where is the bathroom?" Is formal and casual. More formal may be to add an "excuse me..." Rude would be throwing the f bomb inside I guess lol, English is very simple.

    什么鬼?I've never heard this before. I love Chinese. Sometimes it's super logical and sometimes it's totally random. I recently learnt the word 胡说. I knew 胡 and I knew 说 but I didn't know 胡说. Do men with beards talk nonsense? 🤣

    • @sib5th
      @sib5th 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Anyhony Unsworth: 胡 in ancient China referred to nomadic tribes from Central Asia, foreigners who spoke a “rubbish” dialect, and so considered “nonsensical”. That was how 胡说 meant incomprehensible language or nonsense, and 胡说八道 = utter nonsense! There’s nothing random in this bit of history, but that’s another story!
