Dr. Linkov, I feel bad that you need to address your condition all the time. You look great with or without hair, and even if you were in a position to get surgery, it’s always the patient’s personal choice. So it shouldn’t matter what your profession is. I think it just speaks to people’s skepticism around the efficacy of hair transplants. They look at the fact that you haven’t done it and automatically assume it’s because you know something that we don’t.

This doctor is wayyy off with his transplant cost estimate..25k for 2500 grafts is the biggest ripoff in the world. Hasson will do about 2500 gr for 10k. And you could get 3500 grafts for 12-15k. Sooo Elon spent good money but it's attainable for the average guy as well. Also fin and minox is only worth it for certain cases, it's too harmful to be worth using long-term. Any one who continues to use it is doing so at a big risk. Better to go mostly vegetarian and take good natural supplements as well as practicing circulation to the head and proper hormone control. This doctor is ok but he's nothing special.

I empathise. All said, mine left for furrier pastures (the sewer) when I was in my early 20s, and I have always been self conscious. Mix of family genetics and at the time poor lifestyle choices (working late on computer developing AMX Pagemaker, excessive brushing*, little outdoor exercise). *I had very nice 70s like hair if that makes sense, but it was flyaway and difficult to control and style due to a mix of mum's straight hair and dad's curly. So I was constantly brushing and combing it, to no avail and I would nervously fidget with it, twirling it around my fingers. Now I shave it short and all is good, except the sunburn when I forget my baseball cap!
Very nicely explained Dr Linkov! I've just got my first hair transplant at 45 in the hope one would be enough (only 2235 graft units as I was not that bad) and I'm full of natural questions... I'm sure I can better understand my process watching you... Many thanks
As a surely balding hairdresser, I honestly want to work to erase the stigma of men wearing wigs/toupes. You could get this done in Turkey for 1/10 of the price it costs here with outstanding results. My friend got FUT done for thousand bucks there pre covid. He literally had no hair in the front and the top. He was 40 years old looking 50. 8-9 months after the transplant, he had a head full of hair and he still has. He looks 35 and girls are all over him. So amazing to see how hair could dramatically change someone's looks in a positive way. Unfortunately good things don't stay a secret. After covid and the currency exchange devaluation there, the word got out and everyone rushed to Turkey skyrocketing the prices along with it. After adding the flight+hotel expenses it's not cheap anymore but the results are still great.

It is so unfortunate we place such negative value on male baldness. As Dr. Gary suggests, the costs are formidable for the vast majority of men. Many women (if not most), think bald men are beautiful! Dr Gary is an example of this. What a beautiful person and man. I am a 62 year old happily married woman, but he would still turn my head :). My own husband became even more handsome when he gave in to his early hair loss and shaved his head. He too is a beautiful person which is what matters at the end of the day isn't it!! In the nursing profession we would probably call Dr. Gary (behind his back of course), Dr. McDreamy or something of that nature (LOL). Thank you for an informative presentation!!
It's not negative it's just you're not nearly as attractive as you would be with hair. Hair not only protects your head from the elements but it harmonizes and frames your face to your head. It's vital in attracting a mate. Most men would not be with a woman with the horseshoe shape pattern. Most young women do not like bald men as it makes you look way older. Hair loss sucks but our species has it and we need to do whatever we can to maximize our looks to secure a mate to procreate with
you are just trying to be nice, reality is most women don't find bald men attractive it's a simple fact that i've witnessed many, many times. It's unfortunate but it is what it is.
I've found after minoxidil, that increased my heart rate and made me dizzy, then finasteride which completely killed the sex drive; I went with cutting the remaining hair very short and spend the money on gym memberships. Going for the Jason Statham look has worked really well. Women are not as concerned about your hair if you have an athletic body , abs and a sense of humor.
It's encouraging to see many people just starting to make public their hair loss journeys, especially when they have some type of reach to the community because their reach motivates others to face their journey as well and look for a community. It's beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.

I came to learn about Elon Musks transplant but stayed because I'm impressed by how comfortable and confident you are despite your medical condition. It's inspiring for us who are losing hair to know it doesn't matter so much.
Despite his condition? One has nothing to do with the other. His ability to perform as a plastic surgeon and how he can confidently explain is due to his experience and expertise in his field.
I did a FUT. It cost around $12,000 for around 2,500 grafts, that was 10-15 years ago. Now I am looking at doing it again. The cost is now $16,000 for about the same amount of hair to be transplanted. I am very pleased with the first procedure and I can't wait to have it done again. Loved your video.
After getting a hair transplant... is it always necessary to still take finasteride or minoxidil? Or is the hair transplant enough to avoid taking these products. Main reason why I ask is because I am concerned about the side effects of those medicines
You should ALWAYS take finasteride after hair transplant, if you do get bad side effects (very rare) you can quit the medication and the side effects will end as well.
You can try cutting the dosage in half and see if that helps. If I recall they give 5mg of Fin technically you don't need more than like .5 mg in your system for it to be effective.
You are beautiful in and out Doc. This channel makes me feel better about being my natural self and want to delay any surgical interventions until I a much older. Skin care and health from the inside out will be my route

Doc, I am proud that you gave props to the greatness of the FUT procedure. Bad marketing and lack of knowledge has given it a bad wrap much too often. Yes, it's more invasive but some have the take-away that it's almost barbaric. So GREAT job on your casual way of pointing out the highlights. Musk's work is real nice. When you have such wonderful work from the front view who really cares as much in the back. The tiny, almost totally unnoticeable scar, can be camouflaged with an eyebrow pencil. And a LOT of the yahoos who are just in love with the FUE, because they want that shaven fade look need to realize, that the first priority is to go from bald or thinning to "GAIN" some hair. And if you now have it, then grow it. Thanks for your fine role in the field!
I had both FUT and FUE. Both performed by experts it will give you the same optical outcome in the placement area. However, as a patient that has gone through both procedures FUE is hands down the winner when it comes to comfort for the patient. FUE feels more like a treatment, whereas FUT really feels like a surgery.
@@rickr2029 Dear Rick. No IV sedation was not offered during my FUT procedure. In fact, I hardly know any HT surgeon FUE or FUT that does. But the key factor of pain was really after the procedure itself. A deep and wide scar, either stappled or sutured are just going to be more painful than tiny FUE extraction sites. This is basic knowledge. Furthermore, closed wounds are at more risk of infection, every surgeon knows this. We have been performing 18 years of FUE and we don't use any anti biotics at all. We had 1 case of infection in that period. Point is, FUE is a patient friendlier procedure compared to FUT.
@@Prohairclinic .....okay soooooooo your a Dr./Clinic that has "also" received the procedure. Wonderful. So, I am gonna double down on the IV sedation. Wonderful comfortable experience both during and the recovery phase. I am not going to get into a texting war over FUE and FUT as they can both have their place. And that should "always" be mentioned. Kudos to the facilities that offer both and it sounds like your's does not. A different clinic setup is required to perform FUT. Let's be honest here, FUE is a refined approach to the old punch grafts only much smaller punch. When the old large plugs were removed, there was always the donor area needing sewn up. Nothing new. Basic knowledge here. One of the main takeaways from the FUT is that the tissue is taken out of the "safe zone". The area that we can believe is relatively permanent. We usually see that from picture to picture website to website. The same cannot be said of FUE. I've seen several pictures where the surgeon went outside of the safe zone. Why? Because, the little dots scars might be detected if we take too close together? Soo they remove higher up than they should. And that is potentially a problem with FUE. Because you run out of landscape. My belief is go FUT at first and save the FUE for the future and last procedures. Anyway....... FUE is all too often being critical and painting a "Bad" picture of FUT. But "as you even know", there are disadvantages to FUE, and they're legitimate. A doctor and a clinic that perform both gives the patient options without the need to sling the mud.

Who ever did the hair transplant for Elon, did a great job.
Couldn't agree more!
@@nocturnalme3549 I will agree on the costs part. Between 10k-15k will buy one a LOT of work. And we are talking from great surgeons in the U.S. and of course Canada.

30s? Lucky

As a surely balding hairdresser, I honestly want to work to erase the stigma of men wearing wigs/toupes. Women have that stigma too but it's magnified towards men because society stereotypes us as "we shouldn't care" well I do care and I want to feel good with myself and a good head of hair is how I feel good about myself.
How much would you say a natural looking toupee costs? Generally.
@@chudleyflusher748 I have nearly no basis to compare with. I used to work at a high end salon that made toupes and wigs and I believe they sold toupes for something like 2500kr to 3800kr (swedish currency)

Im fucked as a balding 18 year old.
I went through chemo in 2019, and lost all of the hair on my body. Obviously, it's different, since mine grew back. Silver and curly! But honestly, I went through it during the hot summer heat then winter, but I learned to embrace it, I rocked it. You totally rock the bald, I understand it can be a bit harder for women..I am one. But the experience was definitely humbling.
Still is. 5k for a 2k grafts transplant is a bargain
but would you let a turk do such sophisticated surgical tasks ? that's not worth any money, even if the risk is only 5% that you die or 30% that you look like a jerk

Hair loss sucks but our species has it and we need to do whatever we can to maximize our looks to secure a mate to procreate with
i think the negative value we place on penis size is more concerning.

Minoxidil (topical) has almost 0 side effects, finasteride is a different story but still safe
You can try cutting the dosage in half and see if that helps. If I recall they give 5mg of Fin technically you don't need more than like .5 mg in your system for it to be effective.

some have the take-away that it's almost barbaric.
Thank you for the feedback!!
@@Prohairclinic .........then you didn't receive IV sedation from your surgeon that you are tagging an "expert" Because if you had Zero (0) pain.
Great analysis and explanation! I learned so much about hair transplantation. My takeaway is to carefully select a competent surgeon, which is always tricky for outsiders to the medical community. I am also an Elon admirer. His intellect, drive and creativity seem super-human.

Hey doc, can you comment at all on topical vs oral finasteride? I know you prefer the latter, but is topical still an effective option and less likely to have systemic side effects?

Like you're not at all knocking down a person or criticizing them or even claiming to KNOW for sure, just educating us on what may have been done, what they are called, and how they work and cost.
