As someone else who's a surgical MD that's also been through some things, including Bell's palsy (which unfortunately left a mark), it's a real nice change of pace to see an American TH-camr doctor who's not only open about his journey and misfortunes, but also down to earth, evidence based and just plain sympathetic - especially in a very shallow field of work. Great seeing your stuff!

Also, I wanted to say that a doctor that has lost his hair, understands what patients are going through in recovering it themselves. So there is a shared mission -- a doctor who has a full head of hair might not have the same zeal and vigor to help others because they are less likely to empathize.

I don't agree. This would mean, that any doctor or person who did not have the same illnesses and problems isn't very interested in healing them or helping the people. There is a reason, why somone chooses a field in medicine, and most of the time it is a very deep interest in the field and in helping the people who suffer. You don't just walk into a store and choose a profession, this ist a lifetime dedication. Also, the human mind is much more complex than just "oh I know how you feel, I am now better at this". This would mean I need to look out for doctors without hair to get a better treatment. Your statement doesn't make sense. Sorry.

Thank you for sharing your personal story with us. I’m so happy to see you are getting better and that your wife is too. I started to lose my hair when I was 17, it was due to MPB though but mentally it wasn't easy at all. We have super aggressive hair loss in our family (my two brothers were Norwood 7 by 28-30), not to mention aggressive retrograde alopecia as well, all my cousins in both families are Norwood 6-7 by 30. I am 32 and I have managed to keep 90% of my hair. Unfortunately I experienced bad side effects from finasteride and had to quit. However, using minoxidil + microneedling saved my hair. I strongly believe that DHT is related to blood circulation, which in turn due to low supply leads to hair loss. I used a derma roller + minoxidil and kept losing hair. Once I switched to a high-quality pen, within two months my shedding stopped and my hair started to get thicker by month 4 with a lot of new growth. I have followed this protocol for 5 years and haven't lost ground. It's possible-just be consistent but again, I am not sure if it could help with Alopecia areata or any other condition that is related to immune system . However for MPB, with an high quality Pen and NEVER skip sessions and the magic will come. If it worked for me, it should work for EVERYONE.

I just thought you were this cool, good looking surgeon who was at the top of his game but who had extra special qualities of humility, humbleness and humour shining through every video. It’s probably only now, looking back, that you can see the gift that all of your challenges were - who better could understand a client’s lived experience of losing their hair, whether it be via genetics, autoimmune conditions or chemo, than someone who has gone through it themselves. More power to you. I wish you continued success and above all, good health for you, your wife and adorable daughter.

I can imagine how painful that must be. Growing up there was a few guys that women straight up worshipped.. Everyone thought they were cute, and would spam every social media picture with praise. There was nothing special about these guys, they were just good looking that's it, everything was projected onto them.
I just try and imagine how at 18 how drastically they would fall from grace if they had sudden hair loss. It's brutal to think of. I'm so glad I've not had any significant hair loss and I got in good shape, so I look good for my age, often mistaken for mid twenties when I'm 30.

And allow me to comment something else: people's body react differently to stress- for instance, when I was REALLY stressed for several months I got diagnosed with lymphoma, out of the blue. I got cured (remission), but I'm pretty sure all that amount of stress has everything to do with my diagnosis

I'm an 18 year old female... Haven't even stepped in college and have lost 60-70% of my hair (my mom has severe hairfall so maybe it's genetics) . I used to have really thick hair so the fact that my hair is less than almost everyone in my friends' group and extended family has really hit me hard. And this video has given me hope that if God is willing maybe my hair will grow back again as I'm barely an adult... Maybe everything will be fine eventually....I just need faith and patience.

I have the same problem, but I’m 22, and I’m a girl. But, my hair started to grow again after I reduced stress. It’s still a lot of stress because I live in Ukraine and there is a war. But still I did my best to reduce stress and started sleep better, improved my relationship with my husband and started care less about things I can not solve. So yeah, now I have my eyebrows back and head hair started growing. So maybe I’ll be able to take off my wig. Also I going to move from my country as it is becoming really hard to live here. Moving somewhere always stressful but still less stressful than living in a place where you can die or loose everything and stay without electricity for whole winter.
    So, I hope for better

I didn't want to do this from the very beginning until I had heard the whole story, in case you said something that would make my congratulations inappropriate. And I'm glad I did it. Congratulations to you and your beautiful wife on her victory over “C”. I'm very happy for you and your family. Your family and friends must be delighted with the results. Hopefully there will be many more to come soon! I couldn't wait for the end so I started writing all this while you finish your explanation.

I'd like to comment that from my observation, autoimmune hairloss is due to decade(s)-long chronic stress (mental+physical) and also not sleeping. Fellow areata patient here. It wasn't until after fighting it for 8 years, I finally let go of a lot of things in my life and prioritize sleep more that mine stabilized. (Never getting back 100% to where i was before but at least i no longer look like a cancer patient and have people staring at my head) I have to add that if your body is tired and you lack sleep, exercise will make the condition worse. Also the need to consistently consume a lot of whole foods to keep any growth (supplements don't work as well).

I have been following you for sometime now. I’m so sorry that you and your wife have been going through all that. Your videos are geared toward teaching and helping others, meanwhile you were suffering from your own pain and health concerns. You and your wife have been through a lot. Wishing you and your family continued blessings, strength, and good health.

Good grief Gary! You and your dear wife have had a huge amount of stress, over the last few years. I wish you both all the best and long, happy lives together. It’s very true that sometimes we need the adversity to kick our priorities into gear - to realise what’s important in life. Sending you both big hugs from Germany.

Oh my gosh - I didn't recognize you! You look great with your new hair! I have mad respect for you because I had on-and off alopecia on my scalp - I never know when or where it would fall out. It really hits the self esteem. So happy for you and your wife!

Dr., I’m sorry to hear your wife got diagnosed with CML. I’m a chemo nurse & chemo is very tough on patients. So happy to hear shes in remission. You two have been through a lot, god bless both of you.
