No complaints doing a 2/3 drop on my Ram 4wd. I’ve done the lifted route before, and I hardly ever even use 4wd, so it’s pretty pointless for me. Plenty of other mall crawlers around that can get the attention they want.
Did the same to my NBS Z71, but I didn't have to use the keys, I just backed mine off a ways. Next is a flip with a notch and the 2 inch spindles. Do it!!
I have 04 Silverado 4x4 with 3/4 drop with DJM kit ( control arm/shackle). I bought new, modified it within 2 weeks and my neighbor never know it was 4x4. First deep snow day of their surprised look was price less. I never go off-road by the way, but looks and handles much better that couldn’t be happier.
Lift blocks depended on your engine, transmission and tow package. If you got a 2005 with the 4.8, econo rear end, and tow package plus regular cab short bed it won’t come with blocks but if you kept the 5.3 that came with the tow package it would even with the econo rear gears!
Just did this same job on mine a coue weeks ago. And the truck came from Idaho... I did it with the bed still on because I knew it would be an endless can of worms trying to remove it. A very violent and nasty job, but man it was worth it!

What I did with my suburban was crank the torsion bars up front. Drop the rear about 2 inches and threw 33s on it. Sits perfectly level and looks perfect
I have a 2001 chevy stepside with 22 inch snowflakes, with a 6-4 drop and it is also 4x4. I hear it all the time that I ruined the truck. But to each there own. Love the truck man
I did a set of lift shackles on my 04 Colorado a number of years ago and I had the same issue. What a pita! I wasn’t expecting it to be that big of a pain and the truck was only 5 years old at the time. And yes, the older I get the less i find I actually need a lifted truck. Just can’t justify it since I don’t go off road and don’t have access to trails.

You know what else was lowered? GMC Syclone. PLEASE do an AWD conversion and turbo the 4.8 as a Syclone homage, very fitting for a short bed black truck.
My factory 01' S-10 4×4 sits lower than a factory 2rwd S-10. Bought it new in Alaska and it handled the winter roads very well, other than the dad-blamed digits out there ! Most dirt roads .... No problem ! Deep snow........ Time for a toddy with a hotty !
I know this is old but I have used my ball joint press to remove the bolts when you can get to them. I had a 98 S10 blazer in Wisconsin that I lifted and it worked well.
10 years ago I did a 2/3 drop on my 2003 Z71 Tahoe with a pretty warmed up LQ4 and 305/50R20s. Never regretted it. As a matter of fact, every time I am in a stock height Tahoe, I am reminded how much of an improvement in handling I gained. Sure, we lift a lot of them too. But for the majority that never need their height, the only argument left is personal taste.
I lowered my old OBS Yukon Denali with drop keys and shackles. Looked killer on newer 17” Denali rims! Also lowered my 4wd Avalanche by turning the keys down and drop coil springs with shock extenders. Looked great on 20” NBS rims! I love lowered 4wds!
If you're ever doing another one of these with rusted bolts, throw an impact on the bolt to spin it loose and then pound it out, slid right out when I did mine.👍

Lower awd/4wd trucks are sporty, but I'm almost concerned for your new climate. It snows a lot in the mountains. 4wd doesn't help much if you're plowing snow with your front end. I know it's a project and you can just drive your AT4 in the winter while this truck stays parked. Most guys only have 1 or 2 vehicles, so they can't truly focus on on-road performance like this. Lifted trucks have their place in extremely rural areas with less road maintenance where the roads are the last in line to get snow plowed, if they get plowed at all. I like stockish height trucks. Trucks lose their utilitarian value if you have to pick heavy stuff up too much higher to load the bed. I like full wheelwells in stock height trucks. I'll be putting some 285/75R16s on my 90 k2500 Silverado and lowering the torsion bars just enough to clear the tires with no rubbing. I've heard 35s are achievable with stock wheels and generous trimming. Anyway, I don't necessarily like lowering my own 4x4 trucks, but I can definitely see how it will be a monster on the pavement. I'm interested in seeing how this truck pans out. Keep up the good work!
I have the Sierra twin of yours. Mines a 03 z71 turbo 5.3 slammed and lowered 4/6 I drag race it. Leave line in 4wd and switch off once I have traction. And I still have A/C. I love our trucks. Although the 03-06 cat eye stepsides look awful.
Looks great to me. When you guys did the low red OBS truck, I was motivated to do one for myself. Haven't found the right truck yet, but I keep looking, and it will happen. I agree even my 03 2wd Silverado 2500hd rclb sits like a lifted 1500 4x4 pickup and now after a 3” lower kit all around it sits like a 1500 2wd stock and the rear still sits 5” above the tire the front is 3” above the tire.
Like I've mentioned o DDSS TH-cam . It's your truck, you can do whatever you want to it. Unlike the 408 Ford truck. Lowered trucks are cool, lifted trucks are cool. 408 trucks are cool.
So jealous. Here in the Ohio rust belt, you'd be a couple hours cutting bed bolts and using the torch on the trailer hitch. All while taking a rust bath underneath the thing.
I would have left the front up cause I've noticed on Chevy trucks the steering gets easier if the rears lower and also for the weight transfer, but not my truck. I'm sure you're probably in an HOA community but I would have beat those shackle bolts on the inside with an air hammer dropping the spare and those bolts might have come out without removing the bed. But good work LT.
I say lift/level the 2500 & 3500s, lower/level the 1500s in the GMT800 platform, just my opinion. I like every body style lowered or lifted in the GMT400 platform tho, they all look great!
Axle flip kit rear. And torsion key/ spindle hub assembly up front and there was some sort of cradle that'd raise the front axle in the cradle some too. Maybe GMT400 only
so a trick I came up with cause I'm originally from upstate NY so rust country. we had ones that were stuck way worse and you couldn't pull a bed because it might not be able to go back on if you did. I would heat both sides of the bolt red hot with the torches which expands the bolt and the sleeve inside the bushing has a split so it allows some expansion. that would start to break the rust free then I would use my impact in both directions as it cooled back and forth and sometimes they would come loose with just that but the really stuck ones required the impact on the head and an air hammer on the other side simultaneously. so that trick works best if you are removing the spring cause you can get the shackle to frame bolt and the front spring to frame bolt then extract the shackle to spring bolt on the floor with a wet wash cloth to cool the rubber bushing if you needed to reuse it. I used to watch guys fight with those for an entire day and I would have it out in a couple hours.
T H A N K Y O U I've been on the bad end of this argument, and there is plenty of functionality retained when lowering a 4x4! Ya don't have to lift it to clear obstacles you will never encounter.
Full race truck it, cut the bed for sstep notch and give her the boost, 4wd trucks like this are awesome lowered and boosted. Don’t worry about uniqueness just do what it wants.

I think lowering a 4x4 pickup is fine. Not necessarily "slammed" but if you are working out of one and DD it, I think lowering is a fantastic quality of life thing. The "cool" lifted trucks that guys use for work are absolutely awful to drag tools out of every single day. They suck to jump into and out of doing normal daily stuff. Lifted trucks are form over function for me. Stock to slightly lowered is great for people who want a nice daily driver/working pickup (baring heavy towing of course). Just found your channel and I love it.
I pray that one day, that you do a segment/video/tech talk on upgrading OBS-GMT400 Brake upgrade/swap and or using converting GMT800,900 brake components. As an OBS owner (1995 c1500 single stepside Show Trucks USA/Mark 3 variation) the brakes just plan suck, some companies like Pro Performance sells a kit that beats up peoples wallets, but there has to alternatives out, and the fact that you know your way around these platforms and your skill set makes all of OBS folks wonder what you would have to say.. Not to many other companies focused on the GMT400 which is sad, alot them are still on the road to this very day, some modded or still plain ole fashion original! Love the content, this truck reminds me of the 1 you lowered on the show and made the custom mount for. BTW Congrats on breaking 55k subs, next stop 100k! There is a company called atomic fab to convert the front end to a coil over so you can ditch the torsion bars and that cross member so you can also drop the trans and the t case as one instead of separately
I'm a fan of lowering a 4x4 truck. I've found interest in pursuing ideas of proper AWD trucks. Easier to start a low AWD project with a factory 4WD truck and swap transfer cases out. Much like you guys did on Project Redtide from Power Nation. I suggest swapping the stock case for a NV149 and doing the front axle swap for proper AWD. Clone Redtide basically.
Don't mind the lowered look at all, but I think it looked better before. If you're going to do it do it all the way, like some of the other examples you shared.
Full disclosure, I’m a low lifted 4x4 ( just for tire clearance) guy who lives in Louisiana and hunts in really muddy areas constantly. I’m great with a lowered street 4x4 truck BUT it should be AWD and have enough engine to need all four tires pulling! Look out drag strip and auto cross…
I have those snowflakes in 20" machined face, on my 03 Envoy. Can't wait to slam the truck soon. I can use the suspension goodies for Trailblazer SS on it as well as their turbo kit on my 5.3.
Oh man. My truck being from Minnesota i just worked back to what actually came off. So i ended up with new leak springs because of all the seized parts
Good time to upgrade the guel pump. That spring job brings back nightmares of working on fed ex Grumman chassis in Northern mn. After 2k sets of leaf packs. Yes I kept count. I got it down to 3/4 an hour and the wheels never left the God forsaken thing. Good job
so you can get a budget 2" drop on a gmt800 4x4 with some select used parts and block removal, good to know if I ever need to "ruin" one on the cheep :D
I appreciate you making this video, I recently bought a 01 z71 in immaculate condition, thought about selling it and making a profit because I hate the high stance on it, but now watching this video I think I’m gonna keep it , lower it down and get the right wheels put on it, maybe throw a turbo on it on down the road.
LT, don't feel so bad...I used to get asked when I was gonna lift my half ton when I had her, a '98 F150 XLT Supercab with a 4.6 under the hood But wouldn't ya know it, trying to convince some people that this particular F150 lacked things like the transfer case, front diff and the torsion bars the 4X4s had at the time. Sure some folks lift a 2WD drive but I didn't think it was a good idea for pavement princess! lol
If someone needs some worn out coil springs for a suburban I just took mine off it's back up 2 inches so they lost like 2 inches it was constantly hitting the bump stops one is gone and the other is tore up

I’m so glad my truck is an all original Texas truck. Second owner from 2012 and working on it is a breeze. Never have to deal with rust issues

So many of these trucks are drive on the freeway for 90% of their miles anyway. Dropping it but still having the 4WD makes sense to me.
Your pickup and use determine direction
4X4 up or down = primary purpose
Dropped for highway hailing stability
Lifted for off road

you need to flip the torsion keys upside down and install a flip kit to actually lower a good amount 4/6 5/7
Macgaughys can fit 16s.they move the Lower ball joint up on the stock control arm and give you that clearance. You need the ball joint spacer though

I'm a fan of lowering a 4x4 truck. I've found interest in pursuing ideas of proper AWD trucks. Easier to start a low AWD project with a factory 4WD truck and swap transfer cases out. Much like you guys did on Project Redtide from Power Nation. I suggest swapping the stock case for a NV149 and doing the front axle swap for proper AWD. Clone Redtide basically.

Don't mind the lowered look at all, but I think it looked better before. If you're going to do it do it all the way, like some of the other examples you shared.
U need to put on the newer 13 in rotors in the front and yellow stuff brake pads
I love the yellow pads for stopping power, but they make a mess of the wheels with the dust
@@LawrenceTolman true but my wheels are ceramic coated so it’s easy to pressure wash the dust off
You could've used the same u bolts ,if you put the block you took on top. It sets pretty firm since it has a hole to guide it. That's how i did mine

Full disclosure, I’m a low lifted 4x4 ( just for tire clearance) guy who lives in Louisiana and hunts in really muddy areas constantly. I’m great with a lowered street 4x4 truck BUT it should be AWD and have enough engine to need all four tires pulling! Look out drag strip and auto cross…

I have those snowflakes in 20" machined face, on my 03 Envoy. Can't wait to slam the truck soon. I can use the suspension goodies for Trailblazer SS on it as well as their turbo kit on my 5.3.
Oh man. My truck being from Minnesota i just worked back to what actually came off. So i ended up with new leak springs because of all the seized parts

That spring job brings back nightmares of working on fed ex Grumman chassis in Northern mn. After 2k sets of leaf packs. Yes I kept count. I got it down to 3/4 an hour and the wheels never left the God forsaken thing.

so you can get a budget 2" drop on a gmt800 4x4 with some select used parts and block removal, good to know if I ever need to "ruin" one on the cheep :D

I appreciate you making this video, I recently bought a 01 z71 in immaculate condition, thought about selling it and making a profit because I hate the high stance on it, but now watching this video I think I’m gonna keep it , lower it down and get the right wheels put on it, maybe throw a turbo on it on down the road.

Those leaf spring bolts come out east with a ball joint press believe it or not. Rust belt mechanic. Have to change a bunch just to rusting away.

LT, don't feel so bad...I used to get asked when I was gonna lift my half ton when I had her, a '98 F150 XLT Supercab with a 4.6 under the hood But wouldn't ya know it, trying to convince some people that this particular F150 lacked things like the transfer case, front diff and the torsion bars the 4X4s had at the time. Sure some folks lift a 2WD drive but I didn't think it was a good idea for pavement princess! lol
If someone needs some worn out coil springs for a suburban I just took mine off it's back up 2 inches so they lost like 2 inches it was constantly hitting the bump stops one is gone and the other is tore up
