a "band" (in romanian it's called "banda" and it translates as "band" like in "a band of bandits" not like in "music band") would have one guy in a bear suit, one with a goat (i've never seen real bear/goat parts used in these, they're costumes) and up to 20 other guys, but at least 5 more, depending on the region they will wear different types of costumes, not all of them look ancient. Some kinds are clearly thousands of years old. There is a main narrator that shouts the story, while the guys in costumes act it out. The host will pay them about $1 each. That's probably why the tradition is still alive today : it gives young men a sure way to make some money before new year's. This is also more of a new year's tradition than a Christmas one. On Christmas we have normal carols about jesus and all that. Santa isn't in any of the "traditional christmas" stuff, but he's onmipresent like he is everywhere. We actually celebrate the more ancient santa, St. Nicholas on Dec 6th. He leaves small gifts in kids' boots. So Romanian kids get a "sample present" so to say, on the 6th, then they get their big presents on Christmas eve, then they can join a new year's band and get even more money/presents
So there is caroling on Christmas Eve, than more pagan traditions before New Year's Eve, and on January 1st children go with the sorcova to wish people health and luck. So the bear and goat is not for Christmas, but part of winter traditions

So i don't know that you've been told about the Peles Castle, in Sinaia, but that is thee place to visit, wich is the Royal Castle of the King Mihai. And beside, it is the Pelisor Castle. There is a lot of history, and influence from the european culture, that was brought to Romania by the dinasty of the first king of Romania, Carol 1st, in 1866

You can visit a similar but larger museum near the city of Sibiu. It's called the ASTRA museum. There you will see the architecture, the different ways of construction, what the peasant households looked like, the innovative way of capturing wind and water energy and its use for the purpose of a peasant industry. You should have a full day to visit.

It's a must!!

This museum is important because you may see how their grandparents or great grandparents have perhaps hundreds of sheep, cows, pigs, poultry and preparing everything at home by themselves, having milk, eggs and vegetables or meat. And they considered a progress to stay in line for hours and days of their spare time and life for a chicken or some rational food. As a beggar for some bananas or oranges. Who has a beggar 's soul can be only a beggar.
It's mostly a new year's eve tradition, dating long before Romania even existed. There's also the horses, the masks etc. They usually go from house to house in the countryside dancing and pranking people. The ones in the cities are more like beggars, nothing to do with the original tradition.
You didn't visit the great cathedral in Bucharest, is the third in the world after Sagrada Familia and the cathedral San Pietro, Vatican! There are 4 more cathedrals in Canada, USA, Brazil and Rusia, but they can't compete with ours...
Was that the Elisabeta Palace? I think that is now the residence of Princess Margareta of Romania, the eldest daughter of the now deceased King Michael. He designated Princess Margareta as Custodian of the Crown of Romania and she is now the head of the Royal House of Romania. Which sort of means she gets visits and invitations from royals in other countries round the world.
Yet România is seen as shit... Really helpful, they are doing sooo much giving the fact that they are being paid out of people's money... Having this "royal" family hasn't helped one bit but I guess it sounds good to have principesa and princes...

Yes I love this place, my parents used to take me there when I was a kid, its the best of it's kind in all of Europe. Also, don't forget about Maramures in northern Romania where the villagers live exactly like they did hundreds of years ago and they do everything themselves. They are engineers, farmers, architects, blacksmiths, etc...so resourceful, and it is the only place in Europe that is completely unchanged since mideviel times. The happy cross example you showed is a tombstone from the happy cemetery in Maramures.
most romanian traditions are way older than the medieval times. The happy cemetery is living history that's at least as old as the dacians (~1000BC to 100 AD) since they are recorded to have had the exact same outlook on death.

Just a little note - the name "Mihai" has nothing to do with the royal family, it's a religious name. In Romania, names taken after archangels and apostoles are incredibly popular, with Joan, Andrew, Michael, George being the most prevalent, for both girls and boys. As a matter of fact, the past royal family, who ruled the country for about only 2 generations are controversial and not generally liked. Mostly because they were foreign (they were from the Hohenzollern dynasty) and also because they had all the flaws of classic royalty - disconnected from the people, greedy, arrogant and self entitled. Opinions are generally split on their merits, but few would name their kids after them. As an example, you won't find anybody named "Ferdinant" in Romania.
Go to Sibiu. It has the largest village museum in Europe. You have hours to see, but now in summer because the sun is the tourist's friend. It is incredibly well structured and preserved. Have fun.
Worth it... For a guy who left, but continued to be paid out of people's money and only came back from time to time, even if comunism was gone...woohoo
I would strongly recommend you visit Brasov, Sighisoara, Sibiu then head North to Maramures County for an authentic country side experience. These places are so much better than Bucharest, it would be a shame not to visit if you plan on staying a bit longer in Romania 😊
