Romania's castles are like something out of a fairytale!
Even though I am from Romania, this is still quite useful for me. I am 12 years old and I have been living in England for 7 years but I will finally be visiting my home country next year for Easter. We will stop in Bucharest first to meet some old friends and my grandmother and after that, we are going to Tulcea to meet my grandfather and my uncle. I am very excited.
Same, I currently live and moved to the U.S. at the age of 12. I'm going to make sure to visit Romania next year🇷🇴
Toate cele bune!
Bravo sa fiti sănătosi oriunde va-ti afla, sa purtati ROMANIA cu mandrie in suflet!

Same here I’ve been living in US for 20 years since I was a child…. But I always loved it when I go back …
Thank you! România needs more good videos !❤
Greetings from an Argentinian
Thank you too!
Thank you for this awesome video
I am Romanian living in CA
after 31 years went back in July took my husband and my two daughters for the very 1st time
We tour the “people House” ( Casa Poporului) in Bucharest we got to see Peles Castle, the Corvin Castle, Timisoara and few other places
We all enjoyed it
Wow look so amazing place watching from Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭
Greetings from Romania/Bucharest 🇷🇴 thank you for this honest and useful video for tourists👍🏼
Bucharest is gorgeous, reminds me of paris FAR too much. (in a good way) Its COMPLETELY different from the rest of the country which is very cool in my opinion, its good to have a distinct capital. The public transit in bucharest and 99% of the cities is GREAT. The transit between the cities is MOSTLY great. There are always trains, thats not an issue, but some are quite slow, specifically in the moutains which makes sense. Busses are there and sometimes faster in the mountains but usally seem to be the same speed, so I prefer the trains. Natural life in romania is amazing as well, parks everywhere urban, and the rural countryside, the mountains, all beautiful. I went in thinking romania is a balkan slavic eastern culture, but nope, couldn't be more wrong. Yes theres some as you can tell in the food, especially ottoman culture, you also see that with hooka everywhere. But mostly the culture seems to be western, and from what i learned from locals, its always been like that, even during the iron curtain the country was the only one to not stop any western imports, expats, etc, and was infact a HUGE vacation spot for westerners, and still is in terms of western Europeans. They even have entire villages turned into resorts made for "western style entertainment". It was crazy to learn all about the culture, reminds me a lot of home in Italy, specifically sardinia. They have the cafe culture, the cheese, wine, and beach culture, the party and drug culture, its simply home!
The yellow taxis are absolutely fine, the fees are displayed on the door and also inside on the meter next to the driver. Just make sure they’re one of the mainstream taxi companies that run on regular fares, because there are tons of ‘independent’ yellow taxis that display much higher fees. But ultimately you just have to check what you’re stepping in to.
hello young man at 5:03! For your information, ROMANIA is a EU country since 2007.
Planning a trip here this is the first actually informative video of Bucharest, thank you 😎
Glad it was helpful!
5:00-5:05 - Romania is in the EU since 2007.
Merci pour ce tour de la Roumanie. Ça donne vraiment envie d'y aller ! 😊
Hello the Romanian is nice country beautiful forest ❤️❤️im from Pilipine🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Greetings from Timisoara ❤
Love Romanian people. They are very charming especially the guys. Thanks for sharing the video. Love from Australia ❤ 😘
sounds like someone has had some interesting encounters with some of my fellow countrymen.
glad we left a good impression!
Ty miss! We're happy to hear this! Love from romania❤
Thank you 🥰
❤ I miss my country🇷🇴 need to visit it again sometime
Thanks for this video!! I’ll be travelling with my boyfriend in September. He’s Romanian but hasn’t been back to his native country in 25 years !!
I like this style of travel video, very much. You begin in your home, introducing the travel destination, then you point out what is interesting, finally summing up your favorite things about the country you are visiting. This is how I like to prepare to visit a place. First, what is the place like, do I need to learn the language first, and why am I going there? I don't want to be just a tourist, I want to understand the culture of the people in the place I will be visiting. A little background makes the taking in of the experience far richer. I wish more travel videos followed this example. Very good.
Hey mate, nice review so far, thank you for that as a Romanian from Bucharest myself, just some details here - romanian traditional food, in general the ones that you find in restaurants are related to major events like Christmas or Easter etc... now, the pre-christmas or any other Orthodox event usualy is predated by Fasting(1w,1m or even 2m - depending on the size of the event) so we don't have Vegetarian Menus but we do have "Meniul de Post" which is fasting menu where no animal product is used, also, we are a based 4 season country, so most of our cusine follows the season for meat, vegetables, spreads and so on - during spring for e.g. green vegetables(baby bean sprouts, spinach, mountain spinach...etc) and a lot of barbeque like Mici, which is the traditional food for 1st of May are usually ate during this time - summer you get all the salads of mixed vegetables or smoked and dried meat, by default the Branza cheese and i could carry on and on for each season, but the point is - ask a Romanian what he eats, not the restaurants that mainly sell heavy foods used for major events, even our soups are season based! 😁
Cheers and have fun there!
P.S. national drink is Tuica - Tzuica, Palinka(which is a slavic word for burning drink) is only for Transilvania which stands for like 30% of the rest of the country citizens
Great points!
Absolutely correct💯
Romania people so beautiful i visit romania
I was waiting for this video for a long time. Thank you bro!
Slight common mistake. Romanian IS a latin language with a few slavic influences. Its not a mix of both. It only has about 13% percent slavic influences which is far less than people expect. Romanian has slavic influences the same way French has germanic or spanish has arabic influences.
The building that you showed as being brutalist, '70s style soviet apartment building is actually The Adriatica Building, a historical art deco apartment building. It was built in 1937 ... it need restoration ..
He did the same with the Tehnoimport Building, at min 7:33 ... The building TEHNOIMPORT was built in 1935 by Harry Stern, Rudolf Frenkel and Marcel Locar (in the time of King Carol II, the king of Romania at that moment, before the WWII, BEFORE COMMUNIST ERA IN ROMANIA) ... PALATUL TELEFOANELOR (TELEPHONE PALACE) on the Victory Avenue (Calea Victoriei) is another example of ART DECO !!!!I I repeat: ART DECO ..... UNIVERSITY POLITEHNICA OF BUCHAREST is in BRUTALIST STYLE and was build in the 1960's by communists
It was a well done and very informative video. He doesn't need to know every detail of the construction of a building especially since there are so many styles in Bucarest. And it's true that particular building looks brutalist. I would have made the same mistake.
@@maximluiza it is about FAKE INFORMATION. If he doesn't know, he must not induce people in error ... he was convinced that he knows ;) ...
Actually we need to make the difference between fake information spread with the intention to misinform and an honest mistake that anyone can make. I was suprised of the quality of the presentation despite the small errors and I don't expect a foreigner to perfectly pronounce "leu" or that the local name of Vlad was Vlad Tepes.
@@maximluiza The gesture of making this video is beautiful, I have to admit (there have been many American videos about Romania, probably that the Master of the Country, the High Gate of the West (Inalta Poarta de la Apus) has imposed to make some positive videos about the people of this land, land of which is needed in the NATO-Russia confrontation). ;)
So informative, thanks!
Thanks for all of the tips! Travelling there soon!
This video was really good
Thanks so much; excellent video.
Thank you!
Very useful, thankyou
Oradea also its a great looking town, great architecture there prob. best one u can see in Romania and extremely clean city.
Sibiu + Sighisoara and Cluj also should be in top list ^^
Absolutely right!
Hi Sorin! I see that most of the respondents praise their favorite places.
Imagine that you go to Spain and you are delighted with Bacalona and a Spaniard comes and says - yes, you haven't been to Pamplona either.
The fact that people liked it in Romania is enough
I agree its my favourite city in romania I love it
Absolutely!! Sibiu, Sighisoara, Suceava, Cluj , all are a must in the list as these are cities with many hundreds of years of history! A few other things important to mention are the thermal warm springs throughout Romania, its underground huge halls made in salt, the tour of Monesteries in the Moldovia region of Romania
You can't pay with euros in Ro.
7:32 that's a building from the 1930s
"Leu"(coin) actually means "Lion".
Greetings from Piatra Neamț!
thx!
On March 31, 2024, Romania (and Bulgaria) became Schengen members.
My only complaint about this video is that our currency, Leu, is not pronounced "Lou" (also, the plural form of Leu is Lei, not Leus, I've heard a lot of foreigners say it wrong). Other than this, amazing video, very informative!
Min 7:45 ... The building at 12 Doamnei Street was designed and built in 1886 by the Hungarian-German architect Adolf Lang to become the Palace of the "Nationala" Insurance Company. In 1917, the building was consolidated and expanded. Three new floors are added to it and, from an architectural point of view, it borrows from the art deco style, specific to the time. The original ornaments from 1886 are preserved, however.
Well....the connection betwen Dracula and Vlad Tepes (the Impaler) is that Drăculea was his nickname. Drăculea, in romanian language means the son of Dracul(his fathers nickname).
You're describing Bucharest, though at minute 5:30 I noticed something else.
Great job.
Next !
Your forgot Maramures and Bucovina and also the Danube River with all the cities that are in the south-west and to the south of the country.
There is no bucovina in Romania. That region is called North Moldova. Remember Stefan cel Mare, domnitorul Moldovei. bucovina should never be part of a Romanian's vocabulary as it is the name given by our oppressors. Full stop.
❤
A small correction. Romania is in the EU. It is not in Schengen. A small difference.
Visit Brașov the most beautiful city of Romania !!! ♥️💛💙
🌿🤩🤩🤩🌿
7:32 the round building is not built in the communist era. it's built in 1935 during the Kingdom of Romania. architectural style: modernism
4:02 lol we do not use the "loo" hahaha, it's "leu" (singular) or "lei" (plural - pronounced like "lay") and it means "lion"
I watched up to 7:11 . I respect your opinions, many of them are accurate, but you still make some confusions. Keep visiting Ro ! In the end I'm sure you'll autocorrect! Have fun!
7:35 is not brutalist but modernist art deco.
Min 10:02 ... Another mistake .... The Ottoman Empire did not rule Wallachia !!!! . Wallachia and Moldova were never part of the Ottoman Empire. Wallachia and Moldova were never Ottoman provinces.
This is the most helpful romania guide i watched so far. Thank you for mentioning that literally everything people need to know before visiting, this helped me a lot. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's not Lew it is pronounced Lay - Lei or just say Ron for Ron another term for the money here. I'm an American resident of Timișoara. It's better here in Timișoara. Some good information but your românești could use a little work lol.
I love it here! Forță bine.
Pronunți foarte bine orasele.Ești de origine românā?
Such a good video that deserves to be replaced with a more accurate one...
It's not a reproach, I liked it :)
i wanna add that these citys wich you said to be linked to austria hungary have nothing to do with austria hungary. around 12 century germans went to this area and founded 7 citys. Hermannstadt, Kronstadt, Bistritz, Schäßburg, Mühlbach, Broos and Klausenburg. and these are the citys you mentioned, they have this kind of architecture, because the germans lived there and built these citys. they were called the Transylvania saxons. (saxon was a word for a german person in this region). the germans were expelled after ww2 and nowadays all previous transylvania saxons moved back to germany or are extinct or live on as romanians. i have a workmate who comes from romania but his name is german.
One thing, the city Iasi is actually spelled Iași. So, 'ș' is the sh sound, not 'si'.
Ok, a few things that are incorrect:
1/How can you say that Romania is not in the EU?? (Minute 5:03)
Romania is in the European Union.
2/The money is called LEI (pronounced like the verb LAY), leu is the singular, and only use for ONE LEU but anything more than one is called LEI (lay); also, the official name of the Romanian currency is in fact RON (plural: Roni)
Instead of taking taxi, go with the Uber.
3/ Tuica, and not Palinca is the romanian national liquor.
You called ceausescu s castttle at the centre an ottoman feature . More homework brother 👦 but thanks for the video
About how you should pronounce "leu", it's le-u, with "le" like in leprechaun, then U like in Uganda.
Only westerners call him Vlad Dracula when in fact his name is Vlad Tepes which is derived from Spike as he used to impale his enemies. His father was call Vlad Dracul which translates to Devil. Keep to our history
King Sigismund creates the "Order of the Dragon".
It was an alliance of Christian rulers against the Ottoman invasion of central Europe.
The father of Cepes (in Vlach language means "to impale") participated in it. Later, the son also participated in this coalition, which became famous in the Western world through the writer Stoker.
Favorite activity of Vlad the Impaler Dracul (from the word Dragon) is cutting ears, tongues and of course driving a stake).
It is a curious moment that in 1462 nailed the turbans of the Sultan's Ottoman envoys because they refused to take off their turbans to greet him.
The Vlad Tepes castle is the mainstream one , the real one is half in ruin and you have to climb a steep mountain to get to it , its also free and doesnt include a tour guide :) .V.Tepes aka Dracul (The Devil) used to drink his enemies blood after killing them thats where the vampire myth started with the locals , and it did way before the book and the movie. His castle is also built by the nobles (the elites of that time) he enslaved and made em carry each brick to the top of the mountain to build him that castle.
Where did you get that from, that he was driving their blood? Legends... He was a noble, lead a country and it's army, and ordered the death of thousands, most of lower class than him.. I doubt he drunk their blood(cause of desease and he would have known about it he was not a savage). And Dracula does not come from "dracul" is the use of two words that had to do with the people he came from and something else related with territorial organization and intelligently used the word that that popular translates to devil...
As the Romanian word for devil is diavol, drac itself is a popular superstition
Its actually also eastern/southern and central european
mai lipsea nord si vest si era de toate
Lasă legalele frate.
3:30 romania is in schengen since march 2024 i believe?
What does the word oof mean
wait... 1100 euros per month? that's a lot. the average airbnb price of a decent apartment in a good area in Bucharest is about 750 euros. (which is about double the average rent). and if you don't need to be smack in the middle, it can go as low as 4-500 euros.
I thought the same thing, he must be living in a luxury apartment
Hungarian stuffed bell peppers recipe
Tell us more about Castle Dracula. Overrated why?
You don’t need a visa as an US citizen unless you are staying more than 90 days. Please watch how you explain things.
1100€ not necessarily expensive... Bro?
I found it expensive but at the same time tou don't what surface he's renting and it's located in center Bucarest so maybe that's the reason.
Min 7:41, the "imperial" building was not build in the mid-1800 ... This "imperial" building is the former Stock Exchange Palace, built between 1906-1912, according to the plans of the architect Ștefan Burcuș. The style is Beaux-Arts, specific to the Belle Époque period. WTF ??!! ... READ!, READ!, READ! before to post something !!!!
Lei sounds like lay,not loo
Romania is in the EU
English is widely spoken in Romania?
yes, especially by young people
How hard is it to pronounce correctly leu and lei?
First taxi in small citys like slobozia you will find them nice second never go with cars in bucurest and third people from bucarest and constanta acts like high end people =_= i was at constanta last summer and we were some small house turned in the hotel and when we were leaving they tryed to make us pay for the air ilegal and they called us gypsi slobozia people
5:01 romania is in EU
I already explained what I meant earlier
@@TalesFromTheRoadyou meant Schengen (the borderless area) ;) Romania is in the EU, but not in Schengen (where I hope we will be in the future)
Who can help me with tourist visa
As a Romanian who has been living in Bucharest for the last 30 years, let me address some issues with your video.
Your recommendation about not taking the yellow taxis is not really valid. You should certainly take the yellow taxis because they are easy to find, they cost less than Uber, the driver wont cancel on you and they know shortcuts. Plus, they always cost the same, because the fee does not fluctuate during peak hour. However, you need to be aware of the company, if its a legit one (just look up some top taxi services in Bucharest, there are at least 10 good providers) and note the price/ km that they practice (it is written on the door).
The building at 7.31, the cylindrical one, is not "socialist" architecture, just modernist, since it was finished in the `30.
Palinka is never made out of grapes. We only make tzuica out of grapes. This has half of the alcohol content of palinka and it is a drink which is specific to Romania. Palinka is found in other European countries (Hungary, from which we borrowed it, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia), therefore, it is not the national alcoholic drink of Romania. It`s made from plums or apples or pears in 99% of the cases (some do make it out of quince and whatnot, but they are the rebels).
You do have to be careful with the yellow cabs. Some are okay, but other are quite shady. Even those "reputable" companies. When we came back from the mountains the price they wanted to charge us was simply outrageous, despite the price/km they advertised on their car. They can also fix the meter to jump faster than it should. We also took Uber one time and it wasn't that much more than a cab.
Tuica is usually made from prunes.
@@user-Jab1000, as someone who has been using the yellow cabs at least twice a day since 2008, I stand by my comment.
I have also repeatedly tried all the other services, Uber, Bolt, even Yango for the short while they were here. Uber started very well but nowadays their services absolutely suck. Yellow taxis are much more reliable and much cheaper. On rush hours Uber can be three times more expensive than a taxi, so, no, thanks.
I know what tuica is USUALLY made of and they are called plums, prunes = dried plums.
The guy said palinka is made out of grapes and I explained that only tzuica can be made out of grapes, but never palinka.
Did I make myself clear?
Some taxi drivers try to take advantage of foreigners. Your experience as a local does not apply for tourists.
Hence the advice to watch out for the legit companies and be mindful of the tariff on the door.
Gosh, some parts need to be redone or expressed better..they can be misleading…and some parts outright inaccurate.
România is in the EU, how did you miss that? Did you go through any border control?
Hey, Romanians!
Are you still okay?
Poate sa mi spuna cineva ce capcana este aici in promovarea acestui video facut de straini care acorda cite 5 euro pt fiecare screenshot trimis in Africa de Sud?
A mai facut cineva asa ceva?
About safety - we are in 2023 as the title says, not in 2000 so correct that
You you have decided to make a video about this country, you also gad to inform (instead of disinform) yourself on how to pronounce specific Romanian words (such as Moldova instead of Moldavia, the name of the money, etc.)
I’m from Ukraine and past few years I’ve been living in UK. I thought Glasgow was unsafe, but no. Romania is! Be careful, especially ladies
Palinka is Hungarian; Tuica is Romanian?
Pl Simona Halep to speak.
th-cam.com/video/M1BWBUYq6KA/w-d-xo.html, Romania is in EU, even you mention that at the start! You need to decide about that...
Com on bro 😂 you were there for two months and you still call Leu LU ? It’s le like LeBron and u like the U in the utopia LeU.. great pronunciation on sarmale tho 👍
5:07 Romania IS IN the Eu. It is not in the Eurozone.
My friend, you are confusing the ART DECO architectural style (very popular in the 1920's, 1930's ) with the BRUTALIST architectural style ... before you post anything, check, read, document yourself!!!! ... I know, it's hard to read ...
Min 7:45 ... that is not a MODERN building, was built in 1886 and now is Hilton Garden Inn ... It is a horribly renovated historic building (the roof is "modern" an it is a catastrophy from an architectural point of view )
Only westerners call him Vlad Dracula when in fact his name is Vlad Tepes. His father was call Vlad Dracul which translates to Devil. Keep to our history
It's ok to call him Vlad Dracula. It's another name used for him. Why do we feel the need to correct everything? This was a well done video. Can't we just leave it at that?
@@maximluiza , Dracula is a made up name given to him by a novelist who never even visited the places of the Romanian ruler; this makes his made up name younger than his trues given name - and besides, the history should remember him by his real name not by the one he was give to him centuries later
@@alexandrupascu5970 yes but if he's addressing tourists it makes sense to use the term Dracula. He didn't go into the detail of the history vs fiction. People, you need to stop being so sensitive and overreact to eveything. You're dealing with a traveller interested in Romania. He's seen over 60 countries. Are you going to tell me yould be capable of saying 💯 percent accurate information about all of them? Be reasonable and recognize the general intention of the video without criticizing everything. With an attitude like that, no foreigner will deign to show interest in our language or culture because they'll fear people like you jumping down their throats.
@@maximluiza if you want others to learn your history from other than the official sources you have yet to grasp the meaning of the word history; I have nothing against him being interested in our country and visit it but maybe you might want to enlighten you a bit: there are countries, where you can be banned for saying wrongful things about their history as they see it; for example, if you go to Greece with a guide, that guide has to follow the exact words allowed by their culture ministry (hope I got the authority right) - that guide is always followed by a Greek counterpart who knows the other guide language - you cannot deviate from the already script; and I may not be a traveler but I' ve read few books ; why are you so bothered that I have corrected him?
@@alexandrupascu5970 people who correct others think they are doing them a favor. But it's not always like that. On this thread there are several critical reactions very negative in tone. This is not the kind of attitude anyone should have towards someone curious to learn the culture, the language and to popularize it. We should be encouraging and stop fretting over small mistakes. I didn't know the Greeks were so obsessed with the official version of history as to give guides exact scripts to follow. A little extreme, if you ask me.
Romania is in the EU
its in the eu. period.
Not a bad video, but we are in the EU.
Nu e nimic rau in asta.
Is good that you tried to sumarize the history of Romania, but mostly you are wrong on it. So better don't if you didn't want to spend some time to proper research the history.

I am indecisive if I should travel to Romania. Some Romanians say to visit the beautiful country and delicious food. Some say the economy is collapsing and not so nice sentiment. Seeing is believing, may be I should go to get disappointed. The nature in the villages look wonderful, as anywhere in the world.
The economy is not collapsing. The simplest of google searches would clear that up...
Yeah. The Romanians who say "the economy is collapsing" don't know what they're talking about. Some Romanians are extremely negative and pessimistic, but honestly, just ignore these people. See for yourself. I doubt you will be disappointed.
Some romanians have a tendency to overexaggerate the shit they're in on a personal level and extrapolate it to the country. We're ok. We're not Switzerland, but we're far from the third world.
The economy is ok, maybe a bit hard for some locals, but as a tourist is a superb country to visit. Don't worry!
Definitely go. Bucharest, spend a day or two and visit the old town…but hire a car if you can and explore the Fagaras Mountains and many other villages, some mostly deserted but so interesting. Use the trains if you don’t drive. I spent a few weeks using trains and travelled on my own. Explore Cobor Farm for lots of traditional skills etc. Brasov is beautiful. It’s mostly a safe country, it’s beautiful and so interesting. Nature is also second to none. Going back this year and I can’t wait ❤
